GPS for pets

I am looking for a GPS system that will locate your pet cat or dog that has disappeared.  I know that there are microchips implanted in pets to identify them when they have been displaced and rescued.  There is also telemetry that is used with wildlife to track animals.  Any ideas?

GPS Locator??

My brother and I are currently working on an air launcher projectile.  It is highly likely that it could go .5 to 1.5 miles.  We have the ability to test at this distance, however locating this costly projectile is likely to be difficult.  We have looked into gps trackers, however the cheapest one that would actually work was 500 dollars and if we had that kind of money we wouldn't need a gps tracker on the thing in the first place.  I just wondered if there was a quick and dirty way to make a short range locator.  I have heard of little bluetooth tracking stickers, but I wasn't quite sure if that would work to find a 1 foot long projectile in a square mile field.  This locator needs to be extremely shock resistant, fit in a container 7" by 1.5" and must weigh a minimal amount. We also are looking hopefully below 100 @most 150 dollars.

GPS on a Netbook

So, I finally picked a netbook, ended up with an Eee PC 1016P (not pictured). Well, I bought it two weeks ago, but the magic of UPS math meant that 3-day shipping took a week, so it arrived at home the day after I went back to school. Point is... The thing seems like a great candidate to install a GPS module, given its size and battery life. In a topic from my young(er) and stupid(er) days, LasVegas suggested I get a Holux GR 213, which wasn't helpful three and a half years ago, but is now. I guess my real question is, what are my options? I'd like to come as close as I can to replicating the Garmin Nuvi 350 I've been using, but I'm also stingy. I've seen packages of software and antenna for $100 or more, but I'm thinking more like $30-$40 for the antenna and free software, if it exists.

I need to know how to connect a gnss receiver to one specific transmitter to pinpoint its exact location.  If the gnss receiver wont pinpoint the transmitter location I am wondering if theirs another chip that a gnss receiver could use to replace the transmitter.  (If you have any chip suggestion please make sure their small).  I prefer you email me @ jrocky38@gmail.com.

Dog gps tracker?

Hi, is anyone aware on an instructable teaching someone how to track a dog?  I don't want it to track in real time (if it could that'd be fine, but I want to go for cheap and light)  I want to plug it into my computer and have it tell me where he went.  If this is possible can you send me a link?  For bonus points, an Ible' on how to hook up a mic. to record things.  Thanks -Kieran

GPS position transmitter? Answered

I am an aspiring pilot and would like to build a Personal Locator Beacon. I want an arduino type setup that would take my GPS data and transmit it every few minutes for 5 or 10 miles (or more depending on the legality) to a receiver that displays my last known position, my distance away, and my direction (from the receiver). Is this possible? It would also be nice to transmit my position via Morse code too in case my receiver was broken or could not be found.

Mod a Magellan GPS

So I recently got my hands on a Magellan Roadmate 6000t car GPS unit. It's pretty nice, and has a touch screen as well as tactile buttons on the sides of the screen. I don't really have any use for it as a navigation unit, since I know my city VERY well, so I am looking into making it into some sort of pda/minicomputer type of thing. Maybe not even for the Internet, just music, photos, etc. However, there is a catch. Whenever I turn it on, it shows a blue screen. This may be because it is run on Windows Mobile, and it has been disrupted, or because of a hardware failure. But when I connect it to a computer, nothing shows up. So I'm looking for ideas on what to do and HOW. Also, I have a Creative Zen Vision W that I think I might want to put win mobile or something similar on, but the GPS is the first priority. So, any ideas?

Cheap GPS Unit

Where can I find an incredibly basic GPS? I am looking for bare minimum, something that just showed its location or that had an LED that got brighter as you got closer to an entered point. I am just trying to determine if simplistic GPS units are still available amidst the flurry of moving map, full-color, talking, computerized models with built-in A/C and a fridge. I would like to get into Geocaching, and just have a cheap GPS, but the cheapest ones I can find are still LCD screens with moving maps that cost $200. I'm hoping for well under $100, but I'm not holding out. I'm a geeky high schooler with no budget to speak of.

GPS route optimizer

My type-A personality never lets me stop trying to optimize everything in my life. Recently, I’ve started taking data on my commute to work: time of departure and time of arrival versus a number of different routes. This is endlessly amusing to houseguests, and a point of constant annoyance to Christy (who typically records the data while I drive; I record it myself when I bike to work). The result of all this data would be a 2-D color map that could give me an estimate of the shortest route depending on the time I was leaving. However, on further thought, I realized such a chart would only tell me about routes I already knew and would be very sensitive to my route ordering. For example, if there are three ways to get to work, how do I order them? By length? By number of turns? By my perceived annoyance of that particular route? I then got to thinking of taking time measurements between each possible node in a route. Those segments could then be built into routes I’ve never explored before. You can just imagine the look Christy gave me when I suggested this. Clearly, this is best done by a computer. So the question: has anyone seen anything like this, or a GPS unit hackable enough to permit this without carrying a laptop as well (I’d like to do this on bike, too)? Wouldn’t the final version of this be sweet?! You tell it where you’re going, and based on past experience, the time of day, and real-time traffic data it suggests the optimal route. (I’ve seen GPS + real-time traffic, but my guess is that traffic data isn’t nearly as useful as past experience data.) To everyone that can relax while commuting and not worry about 16 versus 17 minutes: I envy you.

GPS based Camera Tracker

I just wanted to check with the community out there to see if anyone knows of a good place to start building a tracking system that is GPS based.  essentially, a person or object will wear a gps device and there will be one placed on a camera gimbal.  I am hoping to create a way for an arduino to do the math so that the camera stays fixed on the target no matter where the target / camera moves. Any thoughts??

A couple of GPS location questions.

I need a lightweight way to locate an object that has dropped from altitude and could be 30+ miles from my position. I was hoping that there i a simple, relatively cheap GPS transmitter/receiver system I could attach to the object. All it needs to do is transmit its coordinates at a regular interval, 5 to 15 min and have a range up to around 50 miles. Can anybody point me in the right direction? I have an old cell phone with a GPS in it. Is there a way for me to utilize this possibly? Either taking out the GPS unit or making use of the phone as-is. Or if you have an alternative means for locating an object at distance feel free to post that as well.

CRIUS GPS module not sensitive anymore. Any ideas? Answered

It's been awhile since I have messed around with my quadcopter. However, the weather was really nice yesterday and I decided to go for a bit of a flight. Just about EVERYTHING on my quadcopter was messed up. To the point it was unflyable. Some reason my CRIUS GPS module simply stopped working as well as it used to. It still works, but instead of taking a few seconds to get a lock, with 7-9 satellites detected, it seems to take 5 to 10 minutes with only 4-5 satellites. All the while it is acquiring a lock, my battery is draining with the ESCs on standby and the gimbal motors drawing an amp or two. The ceramic square top seems to have been coated with a metal square, and that is scratched off in one corner and showing areas of damage. I thought this is just cosmetic damage, but is that actually damage to the antenna? I don't know much about GPS RF voodoo. How do these GPS antennas work?

how to integrate a dash monut GPS with car stock FM radio and speaker system?

I like to use my car speakers  with my dash mount GPS. Is there anyway GPS announcements can be made thru the speaker system while the radio is on playing  either by fading the music or by temporarily interrupting it.. The GPS has a headphone jack output and a USB port and it is bluetooth enabled. I am thinking that a sound activated FM transmitter with an integrated  sound activated switch might do the trick. GPS Repeater from a Hacked Wirelss Router?

Hi all. I'm building a GPS Repeater. I'm wondering if any one has ever tried to use the LNA on the Xmit side of a wireless router to amplify and re-radiate a GPS signal? I'm still in the research stage, but I'm thinking I can take the signal from a active GPS USB patch antenna, tie it into the LNA input on the RX side of a wireless router (hack all signals in the router- we are just interested in the power and signal input). Schematics to a router would be great. I have 10+ years in RF, so I know that the Xmit on a router is so not 1.5GHZ range like GPS. A few mods to some componets can ceratinly help turn the center freq of the Xmit. on the router.   What are your thoughts?

USB GPS module tracking with custom application? Answered

I am working on getting some data acquisition integrated with a mini Baja car we're working on, and I would like to be able to track position with GPS, and hopefully speed too, but thats secondary to trying to track position. I'm going to mount a tablet netbook in the dash of the vehicle; can I use a USB GPS module, something like this:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=58-179-009&SortField;=0&SummaryType;=0&Pagesize;=10&PurchaseMark;=&SelectedRating;=-1&VideoOnlyMark;=False&VendorMark;=&IsFeedbackTab;=true&Page;=2#scrollFullInfo My main concern is it looks like these are made to work as Sat Navs with Microsoft Streets and Trips.  Instead, is there a way to just obtain the position data directly with custom software and record it either as a spreadsheet or graph, or even just something like a comma separated text file? I don't know anything about programming, so I will be finding a programmer to help me out, but I was wondering if this is the best way to go about this or are there gps modules made for this type of application? Thanks!

Idea: GPS sorta based off Access Points

Ok, here is what ive been wanting to create for awhile now and i know ill never have the smartness to build it myself so i thought it throw it out to the crowd Basically ive had in mind is a GPS program that works on any WifI device (laptop or WiFi mobile phone) and it use's triangulation from the signal strengths of three Access Points to tell you where you are at the moment The reason for this is is that at my Uni, i always see people getting lost because its so massive! and some people just can't read maps ( funny, i know) So if there was a program that used Access Points (there thousands of those in my uni) to pin point where you are Some basic Questions i guess - Which programming laungage? (Java?) - Can signal strength be broken down into small categories rather than Excellent, Very Good, Good, Poor - from that, would each Access Point have its own meters per unit estimate? This is probably silly of me to post this here because now someone else can create it (or if they have, someone link me haha) and call it their own :S Cheers Oily

Designing a micro GPS tracking device

Hello all, could anyone give me some insight to how complex the process of designing a very small GPS tracker which could be used to track lets say a person, which can post its co-ords to map software which is custom programmed etc in realtime. Hypothetical scenario: 1) Tracking someone who is on the move outdoors, only has very small pockets to fit the thing in.  2) The device must send co-ords to mapping software on a computer every 10 seconds maybe. 3) Someone can view there position on the map software in instantly to understand their exact position. Also how expensive would the whole process cost to manufacturer roughly? Thanks in advance and sorry for the vagueness in my question
