Go Green!

Just kidding!  Thanks for having me in your group.  It´s been awhile since I have been back to AA but it will always be one of my homes.  Please take time to check out my instructable for Agave Wood Personal Theater.  Hopefully, later today it will be approved for the Wood Contest (still waiting). If any of you visited the UM botanical garden this past summer you may remember their agave americana was in bloom after 80 YEARS of growth and waiting.  Here´s a link http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2014/07/u-m_botanical_gardens_80-year-_1.html . My project was made using the same variety of agave and with the flower stalk and thorns.  In addition, I used nopal cactus (prickly pear) and a homemade wax to finish it.  Thats´s it.  It is 100% natural and vegan.  I know these words can make some squimish but for real when was the last time you could say that about technology? Abu Dhabi has started to build what it says is the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste car-free city.Masdar City will cost $22bn (£11.3bn), take eight years to build and be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses.The city will be mostly powered by solar energy and residents will move in travel pods running on magnetic tracks.Finally, the world imagined by Gerry Anderson is starting to be built - whole cities built as one thing, people travelling on monorail pods, centralised desalination plants, massive hydrogen plants... the chances that they will need International Rescue seem greater with every corner you turn.Still, it could be A Good Thing - if it works, this could be a big stimulus to other nations to start working on carbon neutrality with a vengeance. The following is a known fact _________________________________________________________________________ If all Americans used one third less ice in their drinks the United States would become a net exporter instead of an importer of energy. _________________________________________________________________________ c'mon America do you really need ice in that fountain drink you got from a machine that already cools your drink? As a bonus all who do this will earn at least twice(5 times at sonic) the amount of drink they would normally have.

Green bamboo

I am sewing some window blinds for a friend on a very tight budget. I'd like to know if I can use slim bamboo canes straight from the garden as a weight. It will be sewn into a cotton fabric channel at the bottom of the blind. Or should I be only using dried bamboo? ie I am hoping that it wont go mouldy??

Green Motor

Hey, i am not good at electronics, but heres the idea: i have "planned" an energy saving motor. Anyway there would be a motor, say, driving a bike. The on the wheel's gear we could put another motor, which is for producing electricity. I am not too sure, but i think it produces AC current. But we need DC to drive the first motor (the one moving the bike). So hook up an AC to DC converter to the second motor (the one producing electricity). Then hook some diodes to the wires connecting the first motor from its power source. I think the wires going out from the power source needs diodes, too, since it allows current to flow in one direction (technical term called forward biased? ). To prevent the first motor driving the bike from "burning", a voltage regulator and a current regulator should be needed, right? That's basically the plan. I would be glad to be corrected if i got anything wrong. Thanks.

e150 Full Size Going Green

So I am trying this process of converting my big old van (92 - full size windowless version) into a green machine... Unfortunatly i know little about cars... I am already installing the HHO system myself to make it Part Hydrogen, now I want to add some electricity into the mix as well. I already have a HUGE back space that I don't even use. if it was deisle I would just use the back space for a vegi -converter... but I am thinking of using that space for some batterys (although I know those can get expensive) I was also thinking since I will have the batterys there... I would also make a little turbine on the roof, so i am creating a perpetual energy ( I know how to do this one)... My question is: How hard would be to ADD electric power to my van without losing my current gas/hho mix power. Is it possible? Its not really about "gas prices" or anything, I just feel like everytime i fill up my tank I am: 1) Buying a terrorist a gun 2) killing 30 trees Because I am really bad about being coherent here is my questions to you: - What would be the best option to add to my van after my HHO to make my van MORE green? - If its electric, can i add that with my current (to-be) HHO/Gas? - What could i use all that empty space for? Well, over the past week I was thinking about the environment... and now I'm watching that "6 degrees can changed the world" on NATGEO and it's scary...So I was thinking, why not a new contest? The GO GREEN!! Contest. The challenge would be to make DIY stuff that has to do with using less energy and making the planet better. An example of an entry wcould be a solar oven . What do you think? Green Skin Paint?

Hey guys, So for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie me and my girlfriend are going as Starlord and Gamora. We are trying to figure out our costumes and it seems pretty clear that for her costume to be complete she needs to be green. So I was wondering if you guys new what paint we could use for that, obviously it should be able to be washed off. So if anyone can help many many thanks!

The Ultimate Man Laptop Case (While going green!)

Hey everyone, I recently just had the idea of making the ultimate man laptop case, and once i get some $$$, it will be put into affect. Its body will be made out of a harbor frieght tools case (metal), gonna cut out the front and reinforce with wood, then goes on (2) 6v solar cells. Behind on the inside there will be foam surrounding the DC Volt reader, and if i can manage, two cheap portable speakers that i have that run off a USB cable/aux. They can easily be converted though. Im going to cut out a slot for my SSD to be placed as well as some headphones if theres room. On the bottom part, im going to send those wires to the power controller for the /solar/ and the /battery/ which will be a 12v Gel RC Car battery (long ones that are fairly big). After that comes the DC-AC inverter which will be disected to save space and the plugs will be movable. SPDT switch comes next to switch from 12v to the 5v USB hub thats gonna be installed. Foam will encase everything, then im throwing some .25 aluminum sheeting on top for a nice finished look. This whole project should run me about $350 or so. I realize this case might be heavy, but I think once most of the parts have been sheded of there cases then I think it might be a little lighter. Going to overheat and/or short circuit something? I plan on making a channel for each seperate item in the foam, and throwing 2 USB fans on them. Any help would be greatley appricated with this project :)

I was actually contacted by the producer of the show G Word about my 100 Ways to Reduce Your Impact instructable. G-Word is a show that features "green" content from people like you and me. Peach-Pit Flooring - Go Green while staying healthy!

Ever wonder what happens to those peach pits you throw out? No, I bet you don't, so here is an interesting new design utilizing the pits from peaches to create some neat flooring.http://www.luxist.com/2008/03/22/eco-friendly-flooring-made-of-peach-pits/Think "eco-friendly home design" and a lot of different options come to mind, but I'm willing to bet fruit pits as flooring isn't one of them.Alla le Roux feels differently however, and after being inspired by personal experience has started a business ( Stone Fruit Floors ) that designs and sells handmade flooring created out of peach pits. The pits are sanded down (to get rid of sharp edges and make them more comfortable to walk on) and set into the floor by hand along with glue, sand, and a resin mixture. The end result looks like a strange mix between hardwood, tile, and linoleum.Interesting... Any tips for getting the right foot out to start going green? Answered

Hi. Our family just moved into an old house that we've been fixing up for quite some time now. Once we're actually finished with the house I would like to install as many green things as possible. Like solar panels and wind turbines.. well that's more far in the future but hopefully I would like to get there someday. As for right now, unplugging all electronic devices before we go to bed is pretty much all we do. Money is hard to come by these days and that's one of the reasons why we want to go green. But there's so many different ways and things to do that I sometimes find myself going in circles on actually how to start! Any ideas for a jump start?

Green and sexy car show

The Morgan LIFE car will get it's first UK airing at the Eden Project next weekend.The Morgan LIFE car, probably the sexiest green car in existence is a fuel cell-powered electricsports car built by Morgan Motor Company and startup efficient transport company RiverSimple. Research and development is by QinetiQ, Linde, Cranfield University and backed by BERR. This is its first UK outing.Four stacks of fuel cells convert the hydrogen fuel into electricity to run a super efficient motor generator attached to each wheel. Energy recovered in braking is stored in ultra capacitors rather than batteries, and end to end the performance is estimated to be equivalent to a 150mpg petrol engine. With a top speed of 85mph, 0-60 in less than 7 seconds and a 250 mile range, the mix of technology has been packaged by Morgan to add yet another unique twist to the project. Using only the best and lightest materials, aluminium, wood and leather, the Morgan DNA is clearly visible, adding a new dimension into an environmentally sensitive concept.And Lotus will be showcasing their most powerful Exige yet:The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel is the most powerful version of the Lotus Exige ever, and it runs on any mixture of gasoline, bioethanol and methanol. It is the latest research vehicle from Lotus Engineering, the consultancy division of Group Lotus plc.Emerging technologies will allow alcohol fuels such as methanol, already a proven internal combustion fuel, to be made synthetically from CO2 extracted from the atmosphere. A fuel derived renewably from atmospheric CO2 would be a key piece of the jigsaw allowing society to transfer to sustainable, renewable, carbon-neutral internal combustion.Lotus Engineering is researching the use of sustainable synthetic alcohols as future fuels for introduction within 15 - 20 years.The Exige 270E Tri-fuel is part of Lotus' research into the complex combustion and calibration processes for powering vehicles on mixtures of alcohol fuels and gasoline, which will be important for a successful transition from today's fuels. Green Tourmaline Crystal as a natural battery- Answered

-  I know that a Green Tourmaline Crystal, when heated, will produce a negative and positive charge  at respective ends of the crystal-so, if the heat source was a  super glass lens ( convex or concave, i am not sure which would work most intensely, with the sun going through  the lens and hitting the crystal-  ( for the ecologically minded)-or a laser- or microwave blast,  would we then have a natural battery?  It may have to be a  large crystal!

I am looking for instructions to modify an inexpensive flash MP3 player into a player that runs off an AC adapter.

It's going to run for 8 hours a night, every night. I have a small pair of speakers I will plug into the player. I would rather not have to charge something every day and then have it die after a couple of years. I would rather not charge AA or AAA batteries. I am going to use this player to play one mp3 (a little relaxation script) then repeat another mp3 (the sounds of rain) until its shutoff. This is a white noise / Sleep type of thingy. I have found iCreative Hard Drive Players with their charging system and iPods that will play when plugged into a charger; however, these devices are a bit more expensive and in a few years, many of us are going to have a number of these inexpensive players dead in a drawer and I though it would be nice to look at ways to encourage reuse of these.

Michael Davis and his 60 Watt DIY Solar panel were mentioned in SFGate's Homeowners go greener with do-it-yourself jobs.Like a lot of Bay Area homeowners, Alissa Hauser and husband Steve Brown have already done the small things to save on utility bills and pursue a green life: lower the thermostat, install energy-efficient lightbulbs, use old T-shirts for rags instead of paper towels.But earlier this month, the East Bay couple took a longer stride into the do-it-yourself green home improvement era by spending a Saturday afternoon routing gray water pipes from their laundry machine to their garden. Now, each time they run a load of dirty clothes, the excess H{-2}O runs through a filtering system that waters their apple, plum and lemon trees. "In many ways, environmentalism has become an expensive, consumer-driven effort," Hauser, a director at a nonprofit, said. "But this kind of project proves environmentalism can be a money-saving lifestyle, too."...Michael Davis, a Florida inventor who owns property in the Arizona desert, became a minor DIY Internet sensation on the environmental Web site treehugger.com last month when he posted a step-by-step guide on building a homemade solar panel system for $105.Davis said he needed the free electricity to power tools and equipment on his property near Arizona's Painted Desert, where he relies mostly on a generator. I have finished building and testing my diy solar thermal collector. i decided to paint the outside framework black, will this make a difference? also i was wondering how to work out the efficiency and power it can produce? the temperature difference was 17 deg going in and 29 going out at a flow rate of .36 litres a minute and the solar radiation was 800 watts per m^2. the temp difference might seem low and there a 2 reasons for this. 1)im in ireland and 2)i never bled the radiator so i have a feeling the water only flew across the bottom rather than circulate. selective room heating?

I just turned on the heat before going into my room to go to bed. My roommate and I are in about one fourth of the whole house (and will be for about six hours), yet every room is being heated. This seems like a huge efficiency problem. Are there commercial systems out there that can heat selective rooms? If not, are there ways of making such a system? Can I just tape cardboard over the vents?

Ok, basicly i want to make a little green light. Basicly it will go from a (Solar Cell-and or-Motor) to a (Battery that will collect the electricity from the Solar Cell/Motor) then to a lot of (LED's for a light) ()-each part. what would i need to make this work?

Refrigerator Insulation?

Background: I was looking at Costco and they have their big semi-rugged totes on sale this time of year for like $6! The thing I'm pondering is sticking one in inside another and filling the space between with insulation.  But what to put in between? You're probably thinking what I'm thinking, Pinky:  Spray it full of Great Stuff foam. But then I'm looking at my fridge going... that thing is literally freezing inside and not even cool to the touch on the outside!  What kind of insulation do they use?  I'm guessing something trickier than Great Stuff, what with Energy Star ratings and all.  In short:  What is it and where can I get some!??

Exercycle Generator

63% of Americans are struggling with obesity (http://www.americansportsdata.com/obesitystats.asp). There is also a large green movement going on. So what if we combine these two ideas? I have been looking at instructables on how to build your own wind turbine, and instructables on how to use your bike as a generator for charging ipods and cellphones... why not combine the two ideas and create a stationary bike that puts electricity back into the power grid, much the way a home turbine does? Granted... it wouldn't be much power, but the more you exercise, the more money you save--and the better shape you get in. And those pennies each month add up to dollars each year... and again... the health benefits. It's almost like getting paid to exercise, which can be a big motivating factor. Thoughts?

Carbon emissions still increasing despite recession

With the whole economic kerfuffle going on you would've thought that there would be less carbon going up into the air. New studies show that emissions continue to ride, however. The data is collected and analyzed by scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute and Stockholm University. Researchers found that during the first two weeks of March, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rose to 393.71 parts per million (ppm), up from 393.17 ppm during the same period last year. John Stroem, a scientist with the Norwegian Polar Institute, told Reuters that looking back at data gathered since the 1980s, the increase in carbon concentration levels seems to be accelerating. Model a heliostat with a drill press, laser pointer and mirrors?

Mechanical Heliostats were important scientific instruments over a hundred years ago and one mirror heliostats were often used to focus sunlight on an experiment. Better mirrors became cheap and 2 mirror heliostats replaced them. Then electric light killed off both types.But now, solar energy is becoming important again. Big fairly low efficiency mirrors can be made with mylar stretched across a frame. Perhaps now is the time to get 1 mirror heliostat research going again! (With low efficiency mirrors, 70% efficiency becomes 49% if you use 2 mirrors to reflect the light) So you get less efficiency for twice the expense if you use 2 mirror heliostats!But first we need to model the process. It just takes too long to test your ideas outside! Here is the start of my model of mirrors on an equatorial mount (also called a polar mount) and the sun moving on the celestial sphere. I think that it will end up being very useful. I just gotta find the right mirrors and the right laser pointer. A heliostat with the mirrors moving at one rotation every 2 days, can do this perfect reflection but it is limited to certain angles because the mirror must be upright on the mount.In my model, I have left out the earth's surface for them moment. Semi Compostable Wallet

Hey guys I just wanted to share what I'm working on right now. I was going to see the community's feedback on it. Right now I'm making a semi compostable wallet. I'm making it from the new sun chips bags. Now I say semi cause I'm also using some clothe, tape and thread. So I was thinking and wondering, should I make a semi compostable or should I just go fully. meaning nothing but sun chip bags (Although probably still using some thread to hold it together) So please feedback. Positive if you can. I'm making it for fun and other reasons. One of my favorite reasons is if people ask why. I could tell them when I'm done with it, I can leave it outside and soon it will compost. I'm hoping to make it a green wallet, not the color but in the since of being earth friendly. Traffic light plates and other waste glass reuse

What does a municipality do with old traffic lights? Why, they can make them into dinner plates! Recycled Glassworks makes plates from old traffic light covers from retired lights, often the ones replaced with the newfangled LED kind. Oddly, the green lights end up as blue plates... dunno if this is an artifact of the plate-making process or if the light behind is very yellow, necessitating a blue "green" light.But while that's probably their most dramatic product, there's another. Most glass recycling is limited to bottles and jars. The only thing to do with broken windows, or broken glass tabletops, or other glass of this kind, has been to throw it away. Recycled Glassworks accepts this kind of glass in addition to the traffic light kind. They cut it to size and kiln-bake it in a mold (a process called slumping) to produce extremely attractive bowls and plates.Way to go, Recycled Glassworks!

Kyoto Trough, is it greener than the Kyoto Box?

The idea behind the Kyoto Trough is to use a parabolic trough (rotated inwards round its focal line) so that all the light it collects over a certain time (1 2 3 or 4 hours) focuses BELOW the focal line. Then you use other troughs (probably facing at right angles to the first one) to concentrate this light further onto the cooking pot. I have done a rudimentary test in software and the concept does work there. I think it will also work as a panel cooker. It is very important to line up the primary trough with the path of the sun across the sky. It should also work as a panel cooker. Just a much longer panel cooker with the v shaped little wings like in the diagram Or perhaps a panel cooker with just one "tail" going up in the air and insulation on the back half of your cooking pot?
