editor crashes while parsing invalid html

I think I found a bug that will cause the editor to crash. I had a typo in my HTML tag that I was entering into the source mode editor. The tag looked like blah When I tried to exit the "source code" mode, my browser (Chrome) told me the page had crashed. I tried again, and it crashed again. When I tried again with the tag corrected, it didn't crash.

more flexibility with authoring Instructables

Hello, Is there a way to put images in the middle of text in a instructable step? I seem to only be able to put the images at the top. That's not very useful. There's no way to drag and drop an image where you want it. There also doesn't seem to be any html tag option - it seems Instructable go rid of that button, although I see Instructables from people that tell are using that button. What's going on? Thanks, Eric

Editor shows plain HTML

Hi, while working at this one https://www.instructables.com/id/Waveshare-EPaper-and-a-RaspberryPi I experienced some clitches in the editor. 1. Code sections (formated with the paragraph "Code") are loaded in the editor including the HTML formating tags etc. When saving this they apear in the text as well, so the formating within the code section is destroyed every time. Browser = Chrome 60.3312... all my Safaris On an up to date iPad the complete page is shown as HTML within the editor, I did not try to save it there Feature Requests 2. More Header styles 3. insert a table ? User experience suffers a bit :-( Cheers Mario

The instructable editor keeps adding tags into programs in code view

Hey has anyone noticed that the instructables editor keeps adding tags to the programs in the code view, when the program is not HTML and when it comes to typing HTML in code view, all the HTML is rendered instead of outputting raw HTML. Is this a bug or there is another way around it that I'm not aware of. Thank You

How to include a URL without a hyperlink?

I'm writing an instructable where I include some Linux wget commands that include a URL as part of the command. (i.e. wget http://aaa.com/a/b/foo.python). The instructables editor automatically converts the URLs to links with anchor tags. Is there a way I have the editor not convert the URL to a link?

Horizontal scroll bar issue

When arriving at a page such as https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-technology/ There's a horizontal scrollbar. To remove it, find this rule div#omni in your CSS files. Either: - Remove: border: 1px solid rgba(119,130,135,.4) - Add: box-sizing: border-box; Either one should fix your problem.

Comment post-processing does not respect line breaks in PRE-blocks

I have just noticed that the post-processing done when a comment is posted does not respect line breaks included inside ... blocks. See, for example, my reply to https://www.instructables.com/answers/How-do-I-include-code-in-my-instructable-and-not-h/. The preformatted text is shown as a single line, but entered it as three lines: The text seen here is in fixed format, sort of like source code. Notice the line breaks, which are respected when I type stuff like the above in the WYSIWYG box (so the tags get converted to </> entities). Here is exactly the same five lines of text entry pasted into the Source interface: The text seen here is in fixed format, sort of like source code. As I'm looking at it now (in the editor), there are three separate lines, all in typewriter font. However, when I publish this, that is likely to change...

Why is the use of bulleted list's glitchy?

I like to use bulleted list's when creating documents, but am having inconsistent results using the HTML tags within the Instructables editor. Initially when editing an intro page if I enter the tags the formatting doesn't appear in the preview, however if I view the full page and then return to the editor the bulleted list is displayed. This doesn't seem to work though for subsequent steps. I have viewed other contributors ibles where bulleted and numbered list formatting was sucsessfully implemented, what am I doing wrong? (yes I'm using closing tags)

Captcha not showing to enter but required. HTML id attribute

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP2 Browser: Google Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m URL: https://www.instructables.com/id/Repair-mouse-with-double-click-problem/?ALLSTEPS Reproduce: Try to comment Possible Error: HTML div id attribute contains abnormal '#' character which could be a typo preventing JavaScript from performing action. I was trying to post a comment on a instructable, but it said I needed to enter the two words in the image. But all it shows is the comment field and then: "This helps us prevent spam". The html id of the div i believe suppose to contain the captcha is "#recaptchaContainernull" I believe that this should probably be "recaptchaContainernull". This html div tag having the wrong id would prevent the captcha from loading dynamically with JavaScript.

Can a Bluetooth tag be used to remotely control a Powerpoint presentation?

I have one of these little doohickeys, which I thought was kind of interesting and potentially useful at some point: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/NEW-1pcs-Smart-Tag-Wireless-Bluetooth-Tracker-Child-Bag-Wallet-Key-Finder-GPS-Locator-4-Colors/32409985140.html I'm wondering if there's a way I can get it to control a Powerpoint (or similar) presentation on Windows or OSX? I'm not sure how I'd go about trying to make that happen, so an Instructable post on it would be great.

Will "preformatted" text be fixed for existing 'ibles?

Just noticed today that the instances of preformatting I've included in past instructables don't display correctly. The three-bracket "tag" that works like the "pre" tag in HTML... Currently, it changes to a fixed width "courier"-like font, but no returns in the formatting are recognized, so the text just disappears off the right column (and doesn't wrap, either.) Same for old formatting in the 'ible comments, too. No returns in the PDF, either...

PM with empty subject is not clickable

When someone sends a PM with empty subject, the you:inbox page lists the message, but the item is not clickable. Actually, looking at the HTML code reveals that there is a link, but it is invisible because the tag is empty: (In the above example, the message can be accessed by prepending the base url to the href attribute: https://www.instructables.com/you/inbox?view=X7N77DIGKTJO4PO) Suggested fix: when the subject is empty, emit something like: (No subject)

Oops! We couldn't understand your request. Please contact us to tell us as much detail as possible about what you were trying to do when this happened.

I just spent the last 2 days authoring a new Instructable and struggling, as always, with the abominable editor on this site. This time I did as much as possible in a text editor, including using HTML tags for images uploaded to my account, and for bold fonts, and anchor links with text. I selected the mandatory cover image, which was all cut off BTW, entered keywords, and hit Publish both times and the second time I got the obnoxious: "Oops! We couldn't understand your request. Please contact us to tell us as much detail as possible about what you were trying to do when this happened." To say this is frustrating would be like saying that a sharp stick in the eye was a little annoying. So what's going on this time? Is it the HTML tags which the preview shows as working flawlessly? Are any of these tags banned? If so, why doesn't the message just say so instead of kicking me in the n…, u-h-h, face without offering any help? I couldn't find anyone to contact either, hence this post. Firefox 33.0.2, OS X 10.8.5, javascript enabled And no it doesn't work any better in Safari.

Repaired plain-text editor -- preview doesn't respect line breaks

Thanks again to Rachel for deploying a fully operational plain-text editor! I've just noticed a minor, but slightly annoying, bug. When I use the preview link, all the text is run together just as it used to be, but when I actually post the comment, everything is fine. This misled me the first time, and I went back and stuck in HTML paragraph tags to "correct" the problem.

how can I embed images in an instructable ?

I have read a thread detailing image embedding using https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Embed-Photos-in-an-Instructable/ However, I can't make this work : I upload the images. I embed them using the img html tag. The image is correctly shown in the edition window. When I press "preview", the images are no longer shown. Site layout and taging problems

Today i've noticed that the bottom of the page has been thrown back to the late 90's in the way its showing displaying. The whole site layout has suddenly changed it little ways. What once use to be buttons are now hyper links. Are you in the middle of a site update here? The discussion tab in your profile view has also changed. Almost like its trying to show the recent comments in 2 different ways. Every once in a while when i try to change tabs in the profile page it gives me a pop up saying the site is having trouble. I have to say this HTML throwback look isn't working for me.

Two new bugs: big gap for new comments box, and no Rich Editor

Welcome back, Matt! Here are two more newly introduced bugs to add to your list: The "Add Comment" action introduces an absurd (roughly two windows' worth) amount of white space between the forum-topic text and the commend box. The "Rich Editor" button doesn't do anything, leaving all of us in the land of the stupidly broken "plain text" editor. The paid users can put HTML tags (like ) in by hand, but everyone else is stuck up the proverbial flaming Cuyahoga, with neither paddle nor fire extinguisher. Have a nice day!

Combing Arduino Sketches

Hello, I have a question. I need to combine my code for my Arduino Webserver with the code for my Parallax card reader. When I combine them only the RFID card part works? Twin blade ceiling fan

Hello, I fell in love with the twin-blade ceiling fan pictured at the link below (for some reason the uploader doesn't work in either form for me) , but at over $800 I hate the price tag. I would like to try and DIY something like this for my new house, but I do not have the electrical knowledge to do it alone. I figure that if I can find two second-hand desk fans and wire them into a nice light fixture I could get the look I want without the price, but I need to know how to do so safely. I wouldn't want an electrical fire to burn down my new home! http://www.wayfair.com/Minka-Aire-Twin-Gyro-6-Blade-Turbofan-F502-BCW-MKA1488.html If anyone knows how to get these things all wired right it would be a great help! Summary of observed/reported bugs or poor features with new editor

(10/16 Updated with overnight fixes) (10/15 Updated with new dropped-spaces/wrapping bug) (10/9 Updated with overnight fixes, and two new bug bullets) (10/8 Updated subsequent to Rachel's very nice response, with discovery of another bug.) I originally posted the following as a comment in Eric's announcement about the new editor, but it seems more likely to assist staff as a separate bug report. I've tweaked the text a bit from my original comment. It would be helpful to know (by response) whether these issues are being (or cannot be) addressed, either by Instructables staff or by the CKE developers. It seems there are some fairly substantive bugs or obstructive "features" in the newly rolled-out editor. The ones I've collected so far (from reading posts as well as personal experience) are (now grouped separately as "true bugs" vs. "feature changes" or "design issues"): Browser Incompatibility There are serious shortcomings with the new editor on non-Firefox browsers Cannot paste comments at all, mishandling of links, etc. Bugs Additional user-entered spaces left as " " entities, rather than collapsed Pop-up box for hyperlinks is empty (no where to enter/paste a URL) FIXED Inexplicable "invalid formatting" errors FIXED Text pasting interference (hijacking of Ctrl/Cmd-V) FIXED Interference of spell-checker with built-in and configurable facilities FIXED Extra whitespace inserted between HTML markup and adjacent characters FIXED Line wrapping has problems: spaced between words get dropped FIXED Spell-checker mistakes and application to hidden format codes FIXED Feature/Design Issues Extremely slow loading and processing FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! Inconsistent recognition of typed-in URLs (maybe three separate bugs?) FIXED Text box loses keyboard focus and requires multiple mouse-clicks to recover Editor box, icons, and posting button cut off by sidebar Limited keyboard-based markup (only bold, italic, and underlining), no entities Blank-line separation is not identified/translated into proper HTML paragraph tags Redundant end-of-line tag ("") at end of user's text. I realize that you all have already gone through the conversion of the existing database of comments and everything else, so backing this out is essentially impossible. However, it might be worthwhile rolling out fixes for these problems as soon as they're available, rather than waiting for a regular update cycle.

Even after years of being online, and my and other people's utter frustration with this editor, it is still the worst forum editor on the web. Let me describe for you my current experience. First of all, I make it a point to compose my message in a text editor because I know from bad experience, that it is a certainty that the editor will lose all text that I enter at some point. OK, so I compose my message which contains some html anchor tags with links and text. I paste it into the text box. I hit the Preview button and nothing happens… Great. I see that NoScript (Firefox 30.0) is showing that there is some javascript that is not enabled. I temporarily enable JS. Poof! My text is gone!!! What did I tell you? I have to keep enabling JS several times to finally get rid of the red barred circle on the NoScript icon. I now re-paste my text that I thankfully still have safely saved in my text editor. Preview still doesn't work so I decide to switch to the Rich Editor. BTW I tried switching to Safari to see if it worked there and it didn't so it is not a browser issue. Now Preview works but all my html code is being shown as code and not nicely formatted text with embedded links. Wonderful. I have no intentions of wasting more time with the Rich Editor, trying to add links in the painfully slow process of point, click, copy, paste. No thanks… So I refresh the page. Poof! Text gone. I re-paste and simply click 'make comment' so I can PREVIEW my post. I need to make a few changes so I have to DELETE the post--there is no way to EDIT it like there is in any other forum I have ever used--and I have to repeat this ridiculous ritual several times to finally get it to the point where I can finally post the comment for real. Keep in mind, I could not use any formatting like bold or italics on any of the text like I wanted to do because there is no longer any markdown language. Formatting is only available in the Rich Editor which I refuse to use for reasons already mentioned. Oh, and one more thing… I tried to upload an image and the server was 'down for maintenance' so I gave up at that point. I was told that as a PRO member, the editor was an improved version of the normal one. I don't see any improvements. This and many other similar experiences I have had ONLY on this site, is IMO unacceptable. We all have a life and have much better things to do than waste hours of our own time struggling with an inferior editor in order to freely share our ideas with other people. This in itself is a creativity stifler. I have complained about this before and I probably will again until (IF) this problem is addressed properly. Obviously we the users are the life blood of this site and we deserve much better treatment. Once again, I make no apology for ranting and complaining--Kiteman. This crucial issue needs to be addressed. Get a new webmaster if that's what it takes. The current one is not doing his/her job. PS Wow, I had to preview this post before I could publish it and I see that all the breaks between paragraphs have been removed. Unbelievable. Even in an all-text post there are problems, which just serve to emphasize my point. PS 2 Wait a minute… When I went to edit the post and previewed it, the breaks suddenly miraculously appeared. So not only is the editor flakey, it is unpredictable as well.

Small improvements to think about

Hi there, Having just published my longest 'ible so far I generated enough thoughts to write some feedback which may or may not be reasonable. Embedding content: I see that .stl files appear nicely with ability to preview and interact with them in 3D, that's great. It's also fully possible to embed Youtube videos and they work just fine. What I'm missing however is ability to embed a circuit from 123D circuits - one of the reasons I used the tool for my last 'ible was because I thought it would sure be possible to embed something made with an Autodesk service. Nope. Adding the iframe makes the view appear while I'm writing the step, yet disappears in preview/publish. Another service I tried to embed was gfycat - they pretty much solve the issue of huge gifs and therefore long load times by some html5 sorcery (I'm not familiar with that). This could save space/traffic of your servers and decrease page load times. It would also be awesome if uploading an .ino, .txt or any other raw text file would automatically generate a scroll box with the code there maybe even already having the formatting and all. Similarly like .stl generates 3D preview. This would save instructables from another possible wall of text, especially on mobile, because now, when I manually add a scroll box with code in it it still appears like regular text on mobile. As an extra - it would make the work of authors easier as well. Instructable layout: First of all - I understand and support the idea of having a standardized format of instructables, if this undermines that - forget and forgive me. What I propose is a way to add pictures mid-step to avoid walls of text, since somehow making a new step doesn't always feel appropriate or maybe it's just a personal issue I need to get over? Just say if it is so. At least having a way to remove the "Step #:" when making a new step allowing to have pictures mid-step would help. Before you mention it - I know that it is possible to add pictures mid-step using html, but that compromises visibility on mobile, so I try to avoid that. Statistics: After hitting over 50k views in just a few days with my bottle upcycling 'ible I wanted to at least try and replicate that with my other ones. However, when I click the statistics button I have these empty lines next to the visitor count, often the lines with the biggest numbers. While I can guess where most of the views came from it's still massive guesswork and I'm probably wrong in the end anyway. i.e. in that particular case I got over 30k views on my imgur album, my blog post got featured under DIY tag in tumblr and then got some upvotes on reddit as well. I know that your SEO is pretty good from the amount of 'ibles I get as first google results, but fixing statistics has a potential to drive even more traffic for you. I probably forgot something else along the way, but that's it for now. I hope someone bothers to read this and says what she or he thinks. Cheers, Raitis Disclaimer: This is meant as feedback and some ideas for improvement as seen from my point of view, not complaints, not even real critique. Read, think and move forward.
