Headphone Question

How are headphones/earbuds powered? Is power sent through the audio port? If so, how many volts go through? This question how always wondered me. Because earbuds are basically mini speakers and speakers require power, so shouldn't headphones need at least a little power?

headphones for a guitar?

About five minutes ago one of my friends brother told me my friend was annoying him by playing his electric guitar at 7:30PM as loud as he can so it got me to thinking, to make headphones that work on a guitar it couldn't be as simple a swapping the jack right? if i made the cassete player amp instructable and just plugged normal headphones into that, the headphones would work so only the guitar player could hear it right? my music teacher told me that plugging headphones into an amp was a bad idea for some reason so im just using that to try and make headphones for an amp another way

Guitar Headphones

Im in need of help. My friend has a bass guitar but no amp. And instead of buying one he asked me to figure out a way to let him just plug in his headphones. After glancing around at all the instructables for portable guitar amps I hadnt seen one for just plugging in headphones. SO, I'm asking here in hopes of someone else knowing where an instructable is for this, because I can't find one.

Audio - headphones

My daughter runs a Pre-school and uses a small cd stereo setup. The output is a pair of mono jacks (R/L) for speakers. I am looking to build a distribution box for up to 6 headphones. Thinking of one input (from the speaker jacks using a 2 to 1 plug) The headphones are mono 1/4 so those jacks are readily available. I do not know what the output is of the stereo system is but I doubt it is much over 5 watts (if that). Will I need some sort of amplifier? any thoughts on switches/switching jacks if not all are being used. Thanks for listening. guitar 52

Headphone advice

My old Sony headphones broke after 2 years of use (they were cheep and on sale), so I've been using the head phones that came with my Ipod for about a week and they work fine when im walking or sitting but I cant run or move around with out them falling which is a real pain in the A$$. I'd like to get ear bud, clip ear bud, or canal bud style headphones I have found 2 pairs that i like: Philips Virtual Surround Sound & Philips Ear Bud Headphones & the JVC Marshmallo earbud that True_geek recomended Please let me know if what i might get is total crap.

SkullCandy Headphones

Hey guys , just wondering my skull candy headphones broke in half today , and I'm wondering is it possible to "solder" plastic together to basically fix it? because my cousin tried to fix it by putting this Sumo Glue...on it , it won't get put together again by my friend. Is there any other way of doing this? or maybe basically removing the glue somehow and adding some other type of glue to make it stick together? Thanks guys... =DD

Headphone showdown

I'm currently in a dilemma over the next pair of headphones I'm buying. Does anyone have anything bad to say about certain ones? (Or better yet good things). The three I've narrowed down to are: - Solo HD's  from beats     - These are a tad more expensive, but I personally like them and have heard great things.     - Detachable cord     - Great sound     - Most expensive (119USD) - Skullcandy Lowriders    - I've gotten mixed reviews here, some say that they are crap yet I personally know someone who had a pair of these for 3 years and they were still in one piece.   - A little uncomfortable, but durable.   - Decent sound   - Also the cheapest (40USD) - Ifrogz Vertex    - I have a pair of these which are broken, the cord is a tad cheap but the quality is fairly good otherwise.    - Decent sound    - Mid priced (50USD) Thank You - Nerdman

Headphone idea

I have a pair of headphones as seen by the freaky looking girl below (I got it off the site, that sure as hell ain't me). These are exactly the same model as what's in the link, but theres a couple things I wanna do to better suite me. First off, I think these are intended for kids? They don't sit on my head normally because the head strap is a little short (any ideas?) but they sit with the headband hanging off the back of my head just as good. They may seem fairly "crappy" and the speakers they included with them are shitty, just normal headphone speakers, maybe a little larger than average but nothing special. I wanted to up-grade the speakers with something maybe a little bigger (the ones in here sound pretty okay tho). I tried to see if these small surround sound speakers I had would fit, and the magnet is about 1cm too deep so that's out of the question unless I want to remove a whole lotta plastic with my dremel. So I had a second idea, what about using pager/cell phone motors (would ps2 controller motors work? I have lots of those) and either having them receive the signal directly which I'm sure wouldn't do much unless it was a small pager motor with a small voltage requirement. But, what about a simple circuit, kind of like this mod which uses the sound output of a PSP to drive a circuit that uses "seperate" voltage (ie battery pack) to drive the motor to the sound. My general idea is to have a pair of headphones that feel like you have a giant subwoofer strapped to your head. I know it can be done, I know the circuit isn't that complicated, but probably has enough parts, can someone help me get a jump start on this? I'm sure modifications to a pair of headphones is fairly straightforward. Also any suggestions on a new type of speaker that I could install would be appreciated.

Rewire headphones

I have a sonyericsson handsfree connector that I would like to use on a phone that takes a 3.5 plug. The hands free is nice because there is a 3.5 female jack where the mic is so that I can use the earphones of my choice yet still be able to use the mic. I snipped off the sony ericsson connector and found 5 'threads': 2 'threads' seem like actual cotton threads (one red and one blue), 2 seem like very thin sheathed copper wire, and one seems like unsheathed copper wires. I have a 3.5 male plug that I would like to connect them to but do not know how. I've held the 2 sheathed wires stripped and unsheathed copper wires to the plug while its been plugged in but hear nothing. Is it possible to connect up these wires to the jack so that it will work? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wireless headphone with Microphone

Can anybody tell me how to make a wireless headphone and microphone. Both microphone and headphones should be wireless. I found that one can buy a wireless headphone or a wireless microphone, but not a combination of both. Why I need it. I make long phone calls, during which I need to walk around. If I use a cordless phone, I have to keep holding the receiver with one hand all the time. If I use a speakerphone, everybody around listens to the conversation. Therefore I need one wireless headphone with mic.

Headphones Speakers hack

I've been thinking about this for quite a while now. Since I can remember, I always had problems when it comes to these, after a while, I always end up with the same problem, my speakers not working properly, its always the same, one speaker works fine, the other not so much, same happens with headphones, one side just stops working, and I have to jiggle with the jack to make it work. Of course after I end up buying a new set of speakers/headphones and that's it. I figured this happens because I plug in and out the heapdhones too many times, I use the speakers during the day, but at night I can't be loud so I swith to heapdhones, well, at least, this is my guess about the problem. This is what I was thinking about. I would need a way to have both heapdhones and speakers plugged in at the same time, and be able to switch between them at my please (by software or hardware). However I never even heard of an on off switch or anything like that. Does anyone have any kind of idea of how I could do this?

Headphone Contest - Winner announced

Hey guys, I'm putting a spare three month pro subscription up for grabs, because I collected three in as many days.  So to win the three month subscription you'll need to come up with an awesome project based around headphones, it has to have been published after this topic and mustn't be a rehash of the same project you did a month before...  Feel free to take the theme loosely though it's just got to involve headphones.  As soon as you've published your instructable comment with a link to it.  Contest ends on the 30th of june, when I'll be lying in the sun with my girlfriend making her help me choose the winner.  RANDOM PRIZE - If I can afford to give another membership away there will also be a random prize given out at the end of the contest.  Patches for all participants in the contest, out of my personal stack, so hopefully I don't run out.  ***UPDATE*** It was a tough thing to decide, I loved the quirkiness of have knit headphones, think the idea of having freedom with headphone choice and bluetooth was cool, the versatility of having a volume control for everything but overall my love of blinking lights won and I chose the Led music synched headphones, mainly because the idea was cool and because I like the thought of making this with a big pair of headphones to make glowing domes on my head. Congratulations plugable  I hope to run more contests like this, only having four entries was a bit disappointing but I suppose it's tricky getting started... With any luck I'll eventually have really awesome contests...

If you think (like me) that it'll work, could you please let me know. Thanks, wbr
