Inverters?

Can someone please try to explain how I can re wire a microwave transformer (or any other Transformer) to be used in a custom inverter. The input is 12 volts and the output needs to be 120 volts. Pictures would be great, thanks in advance.

Inverter question? Answered

I have recently made a pond in my garden and to avoid spending lots of money in electricity, I decided that I would power it with a solar panel. My pump is 220v 34w, so I thought that a 40 or 50w solar panel should work. However, i can't find any 40-50w inverter, only about 150w. So, my question is, will a 150w inverter draw 150w from the solar panel if powering only the 34w pump? In other words, will a 40-50w solar panel be able to power a 34w pump via a 150w inverter or would I need a 150W solar panel for that?

The Inverted Map

This map reimagines the Earth with the idea that the oceans are the land masses and the continents are the oceans. It's interesting to see a world map where everything is connected and it would be possible to walk the entire circumference. It reminds us that what is "normal" comes from our own personal experiences.Whether the map is a Mercator map, a Peters map, or a map of something besides the Earth, that map can have a huge effect on how you perceive it. Just like statistics, maps can be deceiving so make sure you're questioning the sources and get the best information you can. link

inverter on a camera flash

Ive been studying the intertubes for a bit now and I cant seem to find an explanation on how a disposable camera flash works in detail. I mean I understand that it runs with two transformers, one at 300v output to charge the cap and the other to help discharge the payload through the xenon bulb run at 2000v output. but a transformer doesn't work with out a pulse or rapid continuous change in voltage. so how is it inverting to ac or am I missing something stupid

Square wave inverter?

I am building an inverter that will use a square wave pulse to drive MOSFET's at 50-60Hz. I have read and heard a lot of stuff that running square wave into a transformer is not a good idea, what I want to know how bad is it? Also will adding capacitors as seen in my image be able to smooth the square wave a bit to help the problem? If so what capacitance should I use? (About 200A input) (The 12V square wave is coming from paralleled MOSFET's)

Given the following schematic which takes a voltage of 12v and considers it off and a voltage of 2 volts and considers it on can someone tell me what changes would need to take place regarding capacitors and resistors (if any) to account for 20v instead of 12v? Meaning that when 20v is considered off and 2v is considered on.

Inverter to Flaslight bulb?

I am building a basic night light ordeal, and I used a photoresistor to detect the change in light. Of course, the photoresistor will, by default, only have a high output when there is light, so I used an inverter (Not Gate). My inverter is made up of a transistor , a 1.5k resistor, a 10k resistor, and leads off to a LED. The photoresistor would go off to the Base of the transistor, so it can invert the output. Originally, I had this hooked up to a 4.5 volt input (the photoresistor has 4.5 volts going to it, and the transistor had 4.5 volts going into it), but I wanted to brighten it up, so I upped the voltage to 7.5 volts so I could add a 6.3V Incandescent Flashlight Bulb (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102809). When I hook this up to a regular 6 volt battery pack, I easily turn the light on. When I connect it to the inverter, however, I don't get anything going on. I've upped the input voltages to 9 Volts, but still, no dice. Everything works fine until I change the LEDs to the bulb. So far, I've changed the resistor values in both directions (I've decreased them down to 10 Ohms, and increased them to a max of 1M Ohms). The only way I can possibly get this to work is by removing the Resistor going to the Collector, but then it is constantly on. The output of the photoresistor no longer matters. The output of the inverter is constantly high. Any ideas? All help is appreciated.

DC supply for inverter

Hello. I need to figure out the component values for a "simple" high current power supply... and whether the component costs would even be feasible. I plan on buying a 3Kw output 12 DC inverter for use in Spain. I have several US devices that I don't want to run off a step-down transformer as running them at 50Hz instead of 60Hz will cause heating and eventual failure (I experimented with my Technics power amp, it got very hot and started to smell, then the output went way down... it's now on the "one of these days I'll open this up and take a look" pile). So, what I need to design is a 220 to 12 volt/300 amp unregulated supply. Ideas, anyone?

UPS battery backup as car inverter?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but if I were to take an old UPS unit, remove the battery, wire a 12V lighter socket plug to the battery cables in the UPS, and plug it in to the car, would it convert the 12V DC to 120V AC while the car is running? And if it worked would it draw too much power or damage anything? I wouldn't use this to run anything with a motor, just a laptop charger and maybe a light. Thanks! :)

Noob Q about inverter for an ornithopter

I was looking in the back of my Jameco catalog the other day and they listed a product called "Muscle wire". It's apparently a nickel-titanium alloy that shrinks as it heats up. It occurred to me that I could flap ornithopter wings with it (a really small ornithopter). I was trying to figure out how I could switch voltage from one pair of wires (the flap UP wires) to the other pair of wires (the flap DOWN wires) without a microchip. I came up with something I'm sure wouldn't work involving a couple transistors, a diode and a cap. Today on wikipedia I figured out that what I was doing was something close to an inverter. So here's the question: Anyone know of a simple switching circuit that runs on a/c power and does not have square-wave switching characteristics?I'll keep researching this myself, but sometimes 'tis quicker to ask the big-brained and kind hearted (you know who you are).

Current limiting high voltage - ccfl inverter help ? Answered

Okay as my first question i'll say hi first , and Darren from Ireland here , fair "know how" of electronics and how things roughly work. I have a 32inch TV who's inverter board is toast (okay its going on and off straight away) , I know its getting power from the psu board as there is little or no voltage drop when I flip the TV on and the lights fire up. I have asked 3 people at work (Electro techs at work) and they all say the same thing , replace the board , its too much work (I think there just lazy) and also they all say they would need the data sheet on all components or the circuit diagram. So well me with my stupid head wants to try and have a stab and getting a free TV. So I have ordered a CCFL inverter power source for a neon case light , which I intend to use just to see if any one bulb is gone as im not sure if that is what could be kickin the inverter off. And the other thing i have ordered is a "Universal inverter for 10-30v 4 bulb 17-24inch" from ebay. So the question is , if one bulb is gone and well i doubt i can order a bulb like this and replace as that would be end of tv if i open than panel . is there a way to simulate that bulb working in any way to stop the inverter going off because of one bulb. And the other question is , if I want to use this universal inverter , what is causing it too be a 17-24 inch only ? From what I understand is if I am wrong correct me please , that the larger bulb would burn the driver chips/fet's drawing too much current. So would there be a easy / safe way to just limit the out put so they will run but a little dim (as the tv is intended to be used in a dark room any way) Any ideas welcome , and for what ever comes up , Thanks !

Grid tie solar inverter power from a fixed voltage source?

Hello there! We have a 4Kw solar system installed at our home. We also happen to have 2 seperate circuits (ie 2 electricity meters). Annoyingly the solar panels are installed on the circuit that we don't use much electricity off so most of the generated electricity flows into the grid and (I know it's selfish) we don't benifit from it at all. There happens to be one lonely socket next to the solar inverter that is powered off the other electricity circuit and I'm fairly sure that the two circuits are on different phases. This is what I wanted to do and I was hoping someone might be able to validate this: I install a 240v AC to 24v DC converter (PAK650-24) and then an inverter to convert this back to 240v AC to supply that lonely socket where we need the power. Our solar inverter has a clever power detecter that switches a relay when production goes above 1Kw so I would connect this circuit to that relay. I also wanted to use a solar grid tie inverter from ebay because they seem most reasonably priced. They do however have a MPPT algorithm which is where I am not sure how it would react to a voltage source. Might anybody be able to tell me whether it would be fine to do this and most importantly about fixed voltage sources and solar grid tie inverters (which aren't really meant for fixed v sources). Many thanks, James
