Steamer Trunk Lock

I bought a footlocker, but just can't figure out how the included lock works. I'll be using my own padlock, but it would be nice to have the built in one working, too.  The cylinder appears to be plastic, and the black tab above it unlatches the lock when pushed down. I can turn the key freely over and over, but it just never locks. Is anybody familiar with this type of lock that could offer some assistance? Thanks!

Making A Lock? 2.0

My first question was for a wooden box. This one asks: Can someone please help me by giving me tips on making a lock for a door? I want to lock up my tool shed, as it has a door, covered in tarp. The tarp keeps the rain out, if you are wondering, because the door is wood and chicken wire. Help, please? There's so many clever people at Instructables I know I'll get good answers. I have a pen cap and a bobby pin, if that helps. Thank Ya'll TN777

Time lock box? Answered

Hey I've seen the movie city of ember and there you have a box that locks itself from the inside, only to open again once the preset time has expired. I'd love to make one for a friend of mine (and for me as well), who's always distracted during the examination, so he could lock his distractions away for the time needed. I browsed hours to find timers and count down circuits. the best things that I could find, never were longer than e few hours or a day. but for this project it should at least last a month. I got a weird Idea of hooking up egg timers in series, so if the first one ends, the next one starts, until your last one finished that opens the box (the more I think about it, the more it's sounding impossible to do) the next best thing that would simplify the build was an arduino, but since these are essentially tiny computers I think it would be a wast to just let them count down. (and doesn't a arduino consume a lot of power too?) and I would like to only use an arduino as last resort... you can make robots out of these little board, it would be too tempting to pull it out of my project and try to make something cool with it. would any of these idea's work descent? does anyone know what could be the best way to pull this off? thanks

Arduino and a RFID lock? Answered

I am trying to get the arduino to know when a certain RFID tag has been read.(so it can be used in a lock application) I tried taking the code array variable and seeing if it was equal to the the what showed up in the serial monitor window with the program on the arduino playground page.  But it came up with the error "exponent has no digits" .  So what would I have to use so that the arduino can interpret the "code" array and see if it is equal to a certain tag? I know that there are already door lock programs out there, but I like to know how programs work so I can learn from them and apply that to future projects. Thanks in Advance! AI

Repeatedly logging me out

Every time I close my browser, I'm logged out of Instructables. Closing all Ibles tabs doesn't do it, but closing the whole browser does, very consistently. Does this on FF5, both XP and Win7, and I haven't changed any settings recently. The ad-filled, restricted, locked-down, freebie version of the site gets annoying when it pops up as my homepage, I think that's going to change...

$2 Dollar Bike lock.

I have recently been searching for a cheap bike lock or a way to make one. Yesterday I went to a garage sale with my friend, what we found there where combination locks for $1 dollar each. I quickly bought one, and then the lady asked what I needed it for. I told her now I just needed to buy some chain and I wouldnt have to sped a lot of money on a bike lock. She out of nowhere handed me the chain and let me have it for $1. Well anyway thats how I acquired it but does anybody know if theese locks can be picked or if the chain can be broken. The chain is in moderatly good condition and is as thick as the stuff used for swings. I dont have a pictrue because my camera needs batteries

PDFs Lock up Computer

For days I have tried to bring up a PDF on any number of Instructables to no avail.  The page seems to be attempting the download, but then nothing.  However, in that process everything ... absolutely everything ... the mouse, keyboard commands, etc. ... nothing works ... FROZEN! Several days ago I went to Instructables for the first time in a couple weeks at least.  As soon as I tried to connect, my virus protection came up and said there had been an attempted attack on my computer which had been averted. I see much prior discussion about "bugs" and expect there may be some connection. I have only been a member about three months, but I certainly hope this bug situation gets resolved.  Had I read about the Instructables' website problem beforehand, I likely would not have shelled out the $ to join. Thanks for your immediate attention.

The indestructable bike lock! ...Idea

The indestructable bike lock: the forum topic that was posted undeniably just to annoy the future patenters! So I had this weird idea for a product come out of nowhere. Y'know how aluminum is supposed to make cutting wheels on an angle grinder gum up, stick, and shatter - when trying to cut it, that is? I was wondering, what if a company engineered a special type of aluminum alloy or a similar material that would do just that: gum up abrasive cutting wheels and make them stick/bind and shatter. Then like with layers of plywood, it would be sandwiched together with hardened steel, in the shape of a U-lock bike lock, making it: Impossible to cut through with a hacksaw, reciprocating saw, TCT bladed portaband , because it's hardened and would wreck the teeth. Impossible to cut through with an angle grinder or rotary tool with an abrasive wheel because the aluminum would gum it up. Impossible to cut through it with bolt cutters - obviously... Impossible to freeze it with freezing gas? I don't know. I heard that's what thieves do. Maybe that aluminum alloy would be a super-insulator and wouldn't allow the hardened steel layer to freeze and become more brittle?I think it might just be invincible until the portable cordless battery powered waterjet is invented!Thoughts?

Need a USB-Controlled lock box

Google led me here, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the ingenuity of the people here! Hopefully someone here can help me. I'm trying to find a USB-controlled box. The box can be quite small, as it needs to contain just a single key. As for the USB part, I can go two ways: first, I would need the state of the box lid (i.e. open or closed) to be sent via USB to the computer. Or, the second alternative would be that the box lid would only open if a certain signal was received via the USB cable. I can do the software programming to either send or interpret the signal, it's the mechanical part I can't figure out. I would happily pay someone to build this for me. Any suggestions? Thanks! Lee

Any PIC Experts out there?

Can somebody help? I have a few PIC16F628, ISD2532 sound chips and 4-digit seven segment LED displays with MM5450 chips from some old laser-gaming boards that I’d like to do something with but have got completely baffled by the data sheets and the complications of PIC programming. Basically, what I’d like to do is create a ‘dummy bomb’ as a present for my local gaming field along the lines of:- • Have a hex keypad enter an ‘unlock code’. Display and save that code • Use the hex keypad to input the time to start counting down from (Minutes & Seconds). Display and lock in that time • Have a button start to ‘arm’ the bomb and start decrementing the time and display it • When the timer reaches 00.00 then ‘fire’ the sound effect in the MM5450 and have an output go low for triggering something else • The device can be ‘defused’ by entering the correct code (equal to that previously stored) or by cutting the ‘correct’ wire – other wires triggering the device. It would seem to me that the ‘wire cutting’ scenario could be accomplished by using tied inputs – one changing state defuses, the others trigger the device. In an ideal world, the device would have 2 operating modes – timer and non-timer, the non-timer mode allowing for the device to be triggered by trip-wire, breaking an IR beam, a ‘hit’ from a gaming gun, etc. In a perfect world, it could also send a 56Khz IR data stream to ‘kill’ all the gaming guns within range but I don’t know the coding for that data stream and it may be in the realms of fantasy anyway… I don’t have a PIC programmer yet but they don’t seem difficult to build or hard to find – only having a laptop means USB though and that does limit things… I can do all the wiring and packaging but is there somebody who could help me out with the programming and/or general advice? Thanks Duncan

3D printed combination lock anyone?

I am in the finnishing stages for a fully 3D printed dial combination lock, similar to what would be used on a safe.Unlike what you might find in other places there is no metal parts. No crappy amount of possible combinations either, 72 per dial dial...I took me a few weeks and quite some filament to get from a draft in Sketchup to something that actually works as planned. As it was more a training excersize in Sketchup for me I had the the following goals:1. Everything is 3D printed with as little afterwork as possible.2. All required springs are 3D printed as well as all other moving or stationary parts.3. Where otherwise fasteners or screws would be required only short leftovers of filament are used to keep the parts in place.Only exception for security reason is the mounts for the front dial and holder. These should be glued or screwed in place if the actual intention is to use it as a working lock.4. The lock shall not be pickable by means of felling, hearing or just trying out random combinations. The above points I got sorted to my satisfaction. However I would like some feedback from trustworth beta testers on the general design and functionality. It is one thing to design something that just works but a bit harder to design it the best possible way.Another big drawback currently is that it seems to be impossible to export proper STL files in Sketchup once they reach a certain complexity.Automatic services or programs to fix these issues result in drastically increased file sizes. Some of the problematic part go from just under 200kb to over 10mb after "fixed".This is not acceptable for me and I have to work on fixing this issue. Most slicers correct these tiny errors automatically and produce a correct print but I prefer proper STL files of small size and complexity over inflated ones that I then need to double check for a long anyways.A few details need changing as my tests showed that you can't drive up print details to a certain level without risking to be unable to mount the parts without further sanding.I hope to have a full set of clean STL files ready for testing by the end of this month. If you are interested to try it out and maybe contribute to an improved version your time will be valued by being mentioned as a beta tester for the upcoming Instructable.Be warned though! This is not for the faint of heart and certainly not for someone who does not know how to calibrate all aspects of the 3D printer involved. The lock also uses quite a bit of filament, currently around 37m all up but I am working on reducing this by replacing solid parts with framework instead where possible. The assembly can be time consuming and frustrating if you realise only once finnished that you have certain parts in the wrong position or orientation. But as said, my goals were not really on making it as easy as possible LOLWhy desing a lock that is neither secure enough nor free of metal parts if there is other options ;)If you happen to work with an Inventor and PLA on the left side then I can provide ready to go .gx files if prefered. They would then be already confirmed to be working and usable on one of my printers.Let me know what you think ...

Android 4.4.2

Alrighty folks, its been a while since i've been in the instructables community.... I apologize for my absence. Anyways, on to my question. My mother and I both have Samsung Galaxy s3s with android 4.4.2, and I am able to set a new lock pin, change lock type, or even disable mine. She, however, cannot do so on her phone. I've looked myself, and it seems all other options for the lock screen are "grayed out" and unable to be selected. All we want to do is disable the lock screen on her phone. Anybody know why this is happening or what I can do to help her out?

How to: Time lock safe (unlocks after several months)

Hi all, I have a client asking for a quote on creating a "time lock safe". It is a 6" x 13" x 15" portable safe (the ref pic they sent looks like a Pelican case). They would like to hand these out to their clients as a "brand-building experience " (or something like that lol). The box unlocks after a month or so and the client gets to keep whatever gift is inside. I have been looking into it and the longest delay I can find on commercial time locks is about 10 days. I imagine this is because the battery could die after that time? Anyway, just wanted to reach out to the community and see if anyone has attempted anything like this or has any suggestions about how to approach the build. I'm currently looking into builds like this: https://www.viralsciencecreativity.com/post/arduino-rfid-solenoid-lock But with the capability to stay activated for several months. Ok, thanks a bunch! My computer locks up with an audio loop, help! Answered

I recently upgraded my hardware (I put in two 8600 GT's in SLI, and an E6850, both used), and shortly after, my games began to lock up. Whatever was on the screen would stay there, and the last second of audio would loop. The only way to get out of it was a hard reset. Then I noticed when I unplugged my other two hard drives, games wouldn't freeze up anymore. So I replaced my 400 watt PSU with a 550 watt, with 50 amps on the 12 volt rails. Everything seemed to clear up, until today, when I was browsing Newegg and listening to Audioslave (not very resource intensive), and it locked up with the same symptoms for no apparent reason. I'm getting worried now, as I shelled out 75 bucks for a decent PSU and the same stuff is happening. My CPU idles in the upper 30's to lower 40's, and peaks at 60 C in games. I know it's a bit toasty, but it shouldn't be hot enough to cause this sort of problem, right? So if anyone has any ideas about what's going on, any help is appreciated.

I hate to just scrap this when I know someone more creative than I can think of a way to convert the hydraulics into something cool/useful. Help with getting a car on a trailer (More difficult then it sounds)? Answered

I recently purchased another car to restore, a 1962 Ford Fairlane, for $200.  Its in great shape, however, the brakes have locked up and none of the wheels turn, other then that I would drive it the 300km to my home.  However, I can't drive out there continually to work on it until it is road worthy, and because snow is coming I planned on hauling it home on a trailer.  The problem lies in getting the car on the trailer.  We tried winching it up the ramps onto the Low-boy trailer, however, because the wheels don't turn, it pulled the trailer and my friends 1 ton truck around.  So my question is; How can I get the car onto the trailer, which are both on a level surface (The trailer is about a foot off the ground) using a winch?  It does have to be readily and cheaply available fix, but anything will do (Jacks, winches, anything!  If you can think of a way to get it on there with dog sh1t then I will use dog sh1t!) I need a good, solid, well though out/engineered plan preferably by the end of the week!  And I thank everyone ahead of time for anything you may post, because it may not be the solution, but it may pave the road to a solution! ***I have included a very detailed sketch of the situation, done by a professional artist, and the scene is very accurate to the circumstances.  Level ground, accurate representation of the type of trailer I am using and the car I intend to put on the trailer.***

How would one go about building a puzzle lock like the ones you have to open with the various dragon claws in Skyrim?

I want to make a working puzzle lock with a little dragon claw key like for some of those doors in Skyrim to be placed on a box...ideally the door would either go down like in the game or simple open out like one of those little tin safe banks I had as a kid :-)  Any idea how I'd go about making one of these?  The simpler the better (even nicer if I can make the parts cheap or get them at a good cost, lol)  If you haven't yet tried Skyrim and thus have no idea what I'm talking about, if you go to youtube and type "golden claw puzzle" in their search it shows the "door lock" in action. Thanks in advance!
