Quiz Buzzer Lockout System help needed

Hi all. my church has task us youth to design a quiz buzzer lockout system type of thing to be used for a bible quiz. so the host will ask a question and 8 people will try to be fist to press their button... the fastest button will lockout out all 7 other buttons so they wont buzz... after he answered then the host will press a reset switch and continue with the next question... i did a ton of research and always end up with arduino arduino arduino... and the instructions is all for 4 or so people and its not very clear to understand or easy to do. i know a bit of programming so that wont be a challenge. i love electronics so that wont be a problem. i just need a clear set of instructions to follow and some guidelines and parts to buy... (im 14 years old... )  the quiz is end of march. it for 8 people cause 8 youths of 8 different churches will compete.  if anyone could give me a plan or guide or point me in the right direction that would be super !!! i know im gonna need some wire... allot of wire... and an arduino... thanks in advance to all you wise folk :) oh btw i live in cape town...

I need to recharge Li-Ion cells w/ undervoltage lockout?

I have 2 Apple A1175 macbook batteries that will not charge, regardless of what I have done to the computer or the battery. I believe that this is due to the batteries having sat for much too long, and eventually the cells got depleted (causing what i believe is undervoltage lockout on the charge controller circuit). I believe I can get these batteries functional again by charging the cells again. Thing is, I don't want to take apart the batteries to charge each cell individually. Is there a way to somehow trick the charge controller into letting current through the batteries? I read somewhere that a 5-15v pulse will do it, but I am not sure if that is true... Any pinouts for the battery would be helpful as I have not been able to find a pinout for them at all. Again they are apple A1175 batteries (from the old bulky aluminum 15 inch macbook pros) Thanks! Edit: I also understand (mostly) the hazards of li-ion technology. I understand they are extremely hazardous under an uncontrolled charge condition. I also understand that by doing this, they might blow up in my face entirely, causing burns and possibly a fire.

saftey questions ASAP

This is for school, but it's nothing graded, it's just a saftey test that I have to do, I have to get 100% on it to get to continue the course, I could fill out most of the questions in my study sheet, but I need a few answered. 1. What are 3 possible injuries from be shocked? 2. How much less is your body's resistance when wet than dry? 3. What are the 3 most common current paths that can stop your heart? 4. How does using grounded tools and electrical equipment make us safer? 5. What's a lockout/tagout procedure?

Why can't Instructables do away with the "removed by author or blah blah blah" thing. It just clutters things up, and doesn't really serve a purpose. If instructables wants the person that made the comment to know it was removed, email them. Any time we have to remove something that can't be edited, it leaves behind this garbage. Before, there was a set rhyme and reason to deleting posts and not having that happen (bottoms up!), but recently I created a post which was the first reply to the first comment in my $1 security hardware instructable, and noticed a glaring error in it and IMMEDIATELY deleted it (because there was no EDIT function) and it left one of these steaming piles of Yak poo in the comment thread. How do I make a slap button light up box/podium for a quiz game?

I want to make an answering system for a quiz game that I am hosting. I want it to be a slap button that will light up the box under neath of the button so that I can see who hit their button first. The system doesn't have to be a lockout system I just want it to be as simple as possible, budget friendly, and easy to make because I am not very electrically inclined. Please help me out and let me know what other information I need to provide. I just want to make two that are not very difficult to build. Button, lights, and power supply connect is all I need.  ALSO, the button is just push connection or momentary connection button. ONly push to turn on the light and NOT push to turn the light back off. Thanks smart people!

East Coast HPV Challenge - Quick Update

So yesterday started the east coast human powered vehicle challenge by ASME. Yesterday was the design portion of the event (and safety inspection/testing). So far we've seen lots of two and three wheelers -- everything from 100% upper body powered (for paraplegics) to a LWB tadpole leaning trike (wheels and all -- no banana lean there). Someone even showed up with a 75+ tooth front chain ring (it's a monster)! We had teams from all over, including two fro Venezuela. Some vehicles are fully faired, more partially. Many of man (and woman) hours invested in everything ;) First picture -- UCF (us!) - in the background is last year's model (complete with scars from several crashes). Note this year's design has rear view mirrors, ventilation and a vacu-formed windscreen :D Our ventilation is even adjustable (climate control perhaps? :P). Second and Third Picture: Leaning Trike -- also has conventional steering (no lockout mechanism though). Really cool to watch - they scored second in the "design innovation" category of the design competition. (Shameless Plug: we scored third in that category). A big deal with this leaning trike from Arkansas, the started DESIGNING in January! Believe me when I tell you - that is HUGE progress to make in such short time. On top of that -- almost all of their team members are getting married soon (their finance's must be VERY tolerant) and there's only something like 4 or 5 team members! I was really happy to see someone bring a leaning trike -- I give them a tip of my hat ;) Fourth Picture: This is what a high speed streamliner resembles -- note the landing gear (very awesome idea). They had some "knarly" crashed today involving hay bales, skidding and mulch (at the sprint event - more on that later). But, true to their safety claims -- no injuries. Fifth Picture: Probably one of my favorites at the event - Tadpole trike tandem (for people that hate each other :p). I want to test ride it (and they're cool enough to let people do that too!). I also say their frame is one of the best design wise (appears very stiff). Last Picture: Everyone listening to the official before the sprint event. Max speed (by that red streamliner I believe) at the sprint event today was 41mph (male rider) ;)

Momentary switch to Bluetooth

I'd like to make a number of smallish (say 0.75x1x2 inches) battery-powered Bluetooth boxes each of which connects to a momentary switch, and sends an RFCOMM or HID signal via Bluetooth on depression and another on release, and which will to communicate with an Android device. Because I want to make several of these, I want something super cheap and super simple to make.  (The purpose is to make a simple wireless touch detection system for foil and epee fencing. Without on-target detection, it's not going to be great, but it will be an improvement over refereeing fully dry bouts, since at least one will have proper impact and lockout timing.) Here are options I've been thinking about: 1. One thing that would *almost* do the job is to buy one of those $3-5 ebay Bluetooth phone camera remotes, and just wire my switch to it. The only problem is that according to the ads I've seen, these Bluetooth phone camera remotes go to sleep in 2-10 minutes when paired (exact timing seems to depend on the model), and I would really rather avoid this (the 10 minutes is almost acceptable). If anybody knows of a way of keeping them paired and awake for a longer period of time (say, 15 minutes or permanently), I would love to hear. This would be the cheapest and simplest solution, and it comes with a case and battery (some units are even USB chargeable).  2. On the other extreme of the price range, I happen to have some extra Brainlink modules with an atxmega and an RN-42 module inside, and it wouldn't take long to customize the firmware to do the job. But the modules sell for $39 (though sometimes on sale for $20), and that seems overkill for something so simple. And they are a touch larger than I like (about 3 inches diameter, and an awkward shape). 3. Another option might be to use a cheap serial Bluetooth module without additional hardware, and wire the switch directly to CTS. Unfortunately, I don't think the cheap HC-06 modules support CTS, though I think the HC-07 does support it (but I don't know if I can access it as it's probably not one of the pins on the header). Moreover, there are two unanswered questions on Stackexchange on how to access CTS/RTS status from Android, so this might require using a laptop as the base station (which isn't ideal). 4. A very cheap microcontroller with a UART (or just bit-banging) plus a cheap Bluetooth module. This increases the complexity of the project, but might be the way to go. More specific recommendations are welcome, as I have no experience with the hardware side of dealing with a microcontroller (on the software side, I've spent a fair amount of time tweaking the firmware of the Brainlink unit).
