R.I.P. Michael Jackson =(

Wow. The king has died. 50 years of excellent, ground breaking music has come to an end. Here, I am paying tribute to him as a mediocre fan. Discuss the life and times of MJ here, not sadly but in celebration of his life. Rest in peace, we will miss you!

I'm building a michael myers prop out of a bust on a pole type of maniquin and I want to make him sound or motion activated I'm planning on getting a radio shack recording module to record the Halloween song but my questions are how can I make it sound activated or motion activated? what else do I need to make this happen? I also want to extend the speaker cord to put the speaker in his chest how can I do that? and I need a new speaker because the one the recording module brings is pretty bad any good speakers you recommend for an animatronic?

Michael Jackson and his huge glove! (awesome video)

This is so delightfully bizarre. An Internet project gets the help of online volunteers to locate Michael's white glove in each frame of a performance of Billy Jean. With that data others can make some crazy tweaks to it. This one is by far the best of the bunch.Really, just click the link and watch the video. It's great. awesome white glove footagevia Make

Instructables Superfan!!!

Wow...Just... wow.Eric Nguyen, Interaction Engineer for Instructables...Eric earned his BS in Computer Science at Harvard and has been building UI toolkits for the web ever since. Eric loves community-building, loud music, and industrial design...He... just... wrote this article. Well, not just now. Before. I found it on Google when I typed in GorillazMiko. But wow, just click the link and read the article, it meant so much to me.Here's some:Instructables user GorillazMiko is.. I don't know what to say. He's awesome. He's on the site almost all the time, reporting bugs, putting encouraging comments on every new Instructable that gets posted (that can be up to a hundred, some days), and making cool ones, himself. He does all this, and he's 13 years old. He's trying to get his parents to bring him to the office, the next time they have a family vacation in San Francisco. His parents must be a little confused as to why their son wants to visit some company while they're on vacation.

Mobile Phones and Elevators

Ahem. Theoretically, an elevator is a perfect faraday cage -- no radio waves should be able to get into them. Mobile phones shouldn't work in them. But rogers says that their phones do work in them. So here's my question for you, instructables community: do rogers phones work in elevators? If so, why?The only theory that we could come up with was that each elevator has a little repeater in it, but that seems a bit costly.

Night Photos of Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch

Jonathan Haeber shot some inspiring night photos of Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Haeber gained access to Neverland somehow and shot many beautiful photos which are available on Flickr.Apparently Jackson's 2,500 acre children-only amusement park was up for auction tomorrow due to a debt of $24 million that Jackson was carrying on the land. Luckily (?) it was announced yesterday that Jackson was going to be able to save the ranch from auction. What's this got to do with Instructables? It's easy to see from the photos that just about everything in the Neverland Ranch is custom made and tailored specifically for the needs of Jackson and the children. Such craftsmanship, so unique, so well executed - could Michael Jackson be the ultimate Maker?via Laughing Squid

"Ride" by Michael Cooper - My Favorite Thing From the Maker Faire

This was, by far, my favorite thing at the 2008 Maker Faire. From Make's Description:Ride is a custom single rider helicopter with eight engines conceived & created by sculptor, Michael Cooper. It looks like more like a time machine invented by Dr. Seuss for George Jetson than anything you've seen in the air (or on land) recently.Michael Cooper is a sculptor who combines wood, metal, kinetics and mechanics with a twisted imagination resulting in beautiful, unique works of art that roll, spin, hop, contort and make people laugh while simultaneously scratching their heads. After 34 years as an art instructor at Foothill and DeAnza Colleges, he has now "retired" to his studio in Sebastopol where he spends his days devoted to sculpting, inventing and pushing the boundaries of form and function with a heavy does of humor.I know the pictures don't do it justice, and it's really hard to see everything, but take a long look and answer this question before you continue: Do you think it does/could fly? (Scroll down below the line and look at the pictures.)... did you look at the pictures first? There are so many reasons why it can't fly that I won't bother to discuss them here. However, the truly fascinating thing I liked so much was standing around Ride and listening to the conversations, and particularly watching its creator stage-manage the discussion. Lots of people wanted to discuss why they thought it could or couldn't fly - remember that this was the Maker Faire, so lots people here were builders or tinkerers (or at least thought of themselves as such). There were half-hour long heated debates about the tiniest of minutiae -- fuel line diameters and spiral exhaust ports, for example.Periodically, someone would gain the courage to think about the system as a whole and would approach the creator to ask, "So it flies, right?" He'd answer truthfully enough by saying, "Well, it's not done yet," and then launch into a detail, like the difficulty in synchronizing 8 engines; this would get the whole group rolling again. Later Saturday evening, when most of the kids had gone home and everyone else was outside listening to a band, a group of particularly crotchety old tinkerer-types were showing off their smarts and trying to outwit each other. After one onlooker had finished with his unnecessarily loud pronouncement of "based on my extensive experience building 1/6th-scale steam locomotive engines, I absolutely sure it can fly," another of the group tentatively approached the creator, and asked the inevitable question.Michael Cooper took his cue, dodged, and redirected into a discussion of how the transmission linking the 8 engines to the propellor was open, and the first time he ran it, he was probably going to get covered in grease. I burst out laughing. After they were all rolling again on how many cubic feet of compressed air the vehicle should optimally carry for its four pneumatic lifter feet, I quietly asked Michael how many people "got it" and how many people asked if it could fly. He confided that I was very much in the minority. Further, he got a big kick out of removing his name tag, and listening in to the can-it-fly conversations, too.I really hope I get a change one day to work with Michael Cooper to design and build a gorgeous Ride-like vehicle for me, so I get the chance to answer the question, "So, does it really fly?"

R.I.P Les Paul =(

Les Paul died today, August 13th. The legendary guitarist reached 94 years old before he passed away from respiratory faliure. The guitar, the best gibson guitar and the one that made the rock and roll sound all possible is his namesake, and yet he doesn't get nearly as much media coverage as Michael Jackson. Why? Michael Jackson didn't write most of his material, and Les Paul has revolutionised modern music as it is today. Quincy Jones made it all possible for the singer, and the one with talent who is much older and more talented barely gets a mention on the morning radio. Here, I pay homage to a fellow guitarist, and inspiration.R.I.P Les Paul! =(
