A Mistake?

Is this contest a mistake? Only 10 days till it closes and only 10 entries... that is pretty lame.... Instructables has never had a contest like this one, where you have to have in a way a specific product and hack it... What is your opinion on this contest??? Thanks!

Newsletter Mistake?

I don't know if something's wrong with the newsletter or if my computer has just gone crazy. In an Instructables Newsletter that I got today (September 12, 2010) The instructable in the top right corner of it seems to be messed up. It shows a picture of a ring and says "Optimus Prime Costume." When clicked, it takes me here: https://www.instructables.com/files/orig/F9N/NR2Z/GDVZOEX6/F9NNR2ZGDVZOEX6.jpg. Is this just a goof or am I missing some kind of joke here?

I think I accidentally flagged someone that I didn't want to......

It was in the forum: https://www.instructables.com/community/What-Do-You-Like-To-Draw-1/ This post: craftyv says: Dec 25, 2010. 2:02 PM I have been drawing (doodling) for years and have kept most of my pics. They tend to be small, 2" square or circle and were all black and white originally but lately they became coloured and often up to 10 on an A4 page. Geometric shapes, convoluted lines and even simple patterns are prominant. I have decided to show them to our Instructables community somehow. Perhaps as an Instructable, something like. [How to fill hours of your time and enjoy every minute] I actually draw in meetings, watching tv, on the phone etc. What do you draw? When I REALLY wanted to flad the group of links in the post above.....My apologies for the mistake.

Bug Report

When i login to the instructable app (version:2.0.4) from my android phone of jelly bean version 4.2.1, It shows I haven't published any article, But i have already published 2 articles. And another problem is, in the side bar of the app, it shows both login and logout option. I have attached the screen shot, see it below. It is showing 0 favourites, 0 following only in app. But when I login in browser it shows correctly. I have around 30 favourites and I am following some authors. But in the app it is not showing correctly.

Or just laugh at the annoyed faces of grammar pendants as you watch Steven fry shame them. Now recently I made an instructable, it was named and "Breathe new life into an old computer" and being the grammar illiterate person I am, combined with the fact the article was written out of pure boredom, I misspelled the article title in two different places. Instead of "Breathe new life into an old computer" I wrote "Breath of new life into a old computer". The reason is, after writing the article, I felt the original title of "A breath of new life into a old computer" didn't really sound good. So I axed the A and called it a day (Rhyme not intended). It was late and without another thought I hit publish and eagerly awaited its appearance on the new ibles page. Nothing happened for 20 minutes, so I went to bed without a second thought. Maybe the database server just crashed or something :P The next day, after a long day of school, I eagerly sit down at my computer and watch youtube... After enjoying at least a few hours of Pwediepie screaming at disfigured goats and Linus (attempting) to colour a $500 motherboard I decide to check my Instructables page. A few clicks to my current Instructables page and WOAH. I see the featured banner draped proudly across the front of my project. My eyes dart down, desperately looking for a view counter and then they find it, "10 thousand views!" I cry. My mouse cursor automatically clicks, my world in slow motion, I scroll down... 3 comments greet me. I just sit there, mouth wide open. A crazy thought slams right into my face, my mouse cursor waddles over to the corner of the screen and suddenly the homepage sits there, my project stands in its little box, like an expensive toy, on display for all to see. My mind is racing, In disbelief. I look around, a hidden camera maybe, I shout upstairs to my brother "good prank". But all I hear is a surprised moan, "what?!" he shouts. It took me a few hours for anything, whether it be ME being featured, or the chicken I had for dinner, to sink in. But eventually it did and I took a some rotting fleshes advice, Keep Calm and Carrion. The last thing on my mind at this point was spell checking, no one in the comments had pointed anything out, and well... I couldn't see anything wrong. It's like that thing when you're looking for something in that horrific mess you call a fridge, after spending what seems like hours looking at every little detail you still can't find the butter. Then your girl friend, Wife or Mum comes along and after giving you a lecture on tidiness they find that one thing you're looking for instantly... Anyway, I decide in the spirit of things I will go and enjoy some facebook, I take a trip to the Instructables facebook page and see my article, AWESOME! I open up the comments section and... Correcting my grammar Correcting more of my grammar I'm not an English professor Correcting my grammar Correcting my grammar Someone who doesn't understand that: 1. I am not American, 2. Americans are smart and awesome people Correcting my grammar Someone who uses such bad grammar that I can't even figure out what they are saying Now at the sight of this I quickly ran back to my article and changed the picture and title, on facebook... It doesn't update. I have learned my lesson, proofread and double check your article, before you post! What can you take away from this? What I have learnt: Theres no 'Be Nice' policy on the internet Proofread your work! Admins are humans and might not pick up on a spelling mistake Write every ible like its the best one you have ever made, because you never know, your ible might be featured down the road and you will just wish that you double checked that title and fixed that little spelling mistake. Also dont ever use facebook because :( it dosnt update live :P lol The Facebook Post My Instructables

Lamarkian inheritance -- not just a straw-man "mistake"?

A new article in Nature reports on research indicating that developmental changes caused by environment can be passed on to offspring. The Universe is always more complex, and more subtle, then the textbooks and dogmatists would have you believe.Lamarkian inheritance is a theory of genetics where animals could pass on traits which they acquired during life. In the typical textbook oversimplification, the examples used are often the giraffe stretching to reach leaves would have children with longer necks; the blacksmith who developed a highly muscled right arm would have childred with bigger right arms; and so on. After the discovery and rediscovery of Mendelian genetics, Lamarkism was more or less ignored (except by Lysenko), leaving only this simplistic and stupid story of a "mistaken idea" in textbooks. There have been a number of discoveries in recent years of heritable traits (in humans as well as in other animals), for which no specific gene, or even combination of genes, could be isolated. The term "epigenetics" refers to the fact that many of our physical traits are driven, not by genes directly, but rather by the complex biochemistry of how, when, and how much genes are expressed. There have been some examples of epigenetic inheritance, but in all those cases, the pattern of gene expression is itself driven by the presence or absence of nearby "triggering" DNA in the genome. This new article is an example where an epigenetic feature driven by enviornmental influence appears to cause changes that can be passed on to offspring. What the mechanism is (i.e., how the pattern of expression gets "stored" in the germ cells) is not clear, but it is very intereresting to see the effect in real life.

Simple, yet annoying mistake made by game developers

I have found a simple yet annoying mistake that game developers seem to love to make. Before I go on, lets get this straight: Parkour is a method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency. Originally developed in France, the main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing and jumping Free running or freerunning is a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the city and rural landscape to perform movements through its structures. It incorporates efficient movements from parkour, and adds aesthetic vaults and other acrobatics, such as tricking and street stunts, creating an athletic and aesthetically pleasing way of moving Okay, so the main difference is that free running is pretty much parkour, except it involves flipping, tricking, and is just all around more free; hence FREE running. But here's the thing I made this forum topic about. In the Assassin's Creed series, you climb up buildings, jump from one to another, and that's pretty much it. Scaling, jumping, rolling, and that's all there is to it. Yet they call it free running. You don't flip or trick or anything, therefore isn't it parkour and not free running? Another game where this mistake is made is in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland--but there's one difference. In THAW, you do front flips, back flips, wall flips, you climb buildings, scale buildings, etc. So it should be called free running, right? Well tell that to the guys over at Neversoft, because they call it parkour. Why? What is it about these developers that make them blindly call something one thing, when it's actually another? Do they even think of looking at sources? Have YOU seen this mistake in OTHER video games? Tell me your opinions on this!

Annoyance: Formatting/URL mistakes suppress preview completely

A new feature deployed recently checks the URLs we put inside comments (i.e., the first token inside square brackets) and reports if we haven't given a valid URL.The annoying bug is that the whole preview is suppressed, and there is no indication of where in the text the error might be. Briefly, the preview actually showed the whole text, but with the error part called out in big red box. That was better, and would be nice to get back.Failing that, maybe just putting the malformed URL into the preview as a literal string, highlighted or underlined or something might be helpful.

Help please. Published by mistake - need to move it all.

Help! I published a question - a request for help - as an Instructable and just put it in the Tech section. Now all the comments say I was wrong, that I should have published in the FORUMS. Oh, I didn't know. I just started with "Submit" and ended with "Publish" and now all the little old ladies in tennis shoes are circling for the kill. I had no idea I was breaking a taboo; I just wanted to ask for help. PLEASE tell me if I can remove my whole Instructable from where it is and put it into FORUMS. Is it possible to drag & drop the whole thing, pictures included? Or do I have to do each little thing all over again? (My Instructable is entitled: "Question on using a Peltier/TEC device for air temperature control - Help please")

There is a Major Timeline Error in the Halo Wars Promo Poster

In the poster for the new game Halo Wars, try to find the mistake. I'll give you a hint: look at their guns. As many people know from reading the Halo series of books and the video games, that before the battle rifle is introduced, all but one Spartan are wiped out on Reach, or trapped inside of Onyx. You, as Master Chief, are introduced to the BR55HB SR Battle Rifle in Halo 2. The Spartans were all wiped out before Halo 1, well before the Battle Rifle is even conceived by its makers. What gives? Why would they make such a serious (to me) mistake on a widely distributed promotional product?

Tips to minimize error on embedded projects

Hey all, Over the past long while (5 months of freetime or so) I've been hard at work on an embedded electronics project for fun. However, I keep running into stupid mistakes where I frankly should've known better. Sometimes it feels like there is a gremlin or some other sentient force whose only goal in life is to make sure my project fails. Anyhow, because of this, I ask: What suggestions do you guys have for things to do to help minimize stupid mistakes while undertaking projects (particularly embedded projects involving PCBs, though general project guidelines are also welcome). Thanks, Purduecer

Have sweet looking laser, desire to fire. How to figure out what voltage to apply without destroying it by mistake?

Anybody know what sort of laser is found inside a commercial laser copier/printer? I have a fairly chunky LD (housed in heavy brass shell w/ 3 leads coming out of the base) that I'm pretty sure came from a Konica-Minolta commercial laser copier. I know they can be pretty delicate so I really want to avoid experimenting with random voltages, and so I'm looking for any approach that isn't "shoot first and ask questions later. Can the forward voltage be determined safely? Any thoughts on this are appreciated; I've only just begun to understand LEDs at all... The numbers printed on the circuit board were not helping me except to figure who may have made the machine it's from, but in case they tell you more, here they are: PU639T102 -01 SEC-55194V -0 THANKS!

I really need help, please!

I don't know what mistake I did, but my anterior identity (Lindsley), with four instructables, was now dbrt60, with none! How can I retrieve my old identity? Thank you very much. Lindsley

See I have been wanting to mod a NES to the MAX but I don't want to risk messing up my good one if I make a mistake.
