New Group : Scooter Trash - For all of you Bikers, Bikies, Motorcyclists, 1%ers, Citizens and Independants

I've started a new group dedicated to motorcycles and the lifestyle that goes with them. Scooters, Mopeds, Trikes, Sportbikes, Choppers, Bobbers, Cruisers, Tourers: They all count. Feel free to join if you have something to add, or if you're interested in bikes. To me, motorcycles represent freedom. Freedom to go. Freedom to be. Freedom from convention. Freedom to live. Freedom to ride. When you're on a bike with the breeze in your face, bugs in your teeth, and wind in your hair, nothing else matters. Bills, ills, drought, loss, death, strain, stress: all gone while that engine is pounding, and those wheels are rolling. My parents treated them as if they were evil, and I agreed, FOR A WHILE. When I was 17, while they were out of town on vacation, I bought my first bike. It was a beat up 20 year old Harley. It almost never ran, (so Mom and Dad calmed down) but it started a permanent love-affair with cycles. I've owned nearly 50 bikes over the last 20 years, and still own 11 of them. Note: I just went over the list, and I've owned 41 complete bikes, and 17 parts/project bikes, not to mention a barn full of miscellaneous spare parts. So tell me, What do you ride? What do you want to ride? Why do you ride? How long have you been riding? Good/Bad experiences?

Need information on an old mower.

All I know about it is that it has a 6B engine, is made by "moto mower", and has a aluminium deck. I would like to know where I can get parts for it and possibly some history about it. Some info on how to remove a seized on gas cap would also be helpful.

IR or RF light switch.?

I need to replace an old (1940s) rotary switch.  It turns on 21, 20 watt/110v light bulbs on a display sign.  Each one in sequence.  Once on, each light stays on until switch is rotated backwards or all are turned off.  Currently, the switch is on a 10' cable with all wires forming the cable.  It is bulky and contacts are bad.  So, I'm hoping one of you wizards can give me instructions on how to replace it with a wireless remote and relays or whatever.  I bow to the experts. If you prefer, you can contact me at   Moto-Ed@att.net Thanks, Ray

How does this engine work? Answered

I have a mini moto engine which i'm going to use to power a go kart type thing. I need help identifying the different intakes as it looks like there are three holes. I think the middle one is to attatch a throttle cable, but what of the other 2? One already has a pipe attatched to it (right hand side) and the other (left) looks like it has a fuel tap. I'd guess fuel and oil, but I always thought that had to be premixed, so shouldn't there only be one hole? Any help in identifying the different bits would be appreciated. Chip.

Wondering how to power an LED on the end of a motor

I'm trying to make a prop, which has an LED (or two) on the spinning tip. I'm not sure how best to power it. I could make my own contact brushes, but that would be either too big or too unreliable. I've been looking around for motors that have some kind of slip-ring built in to deliver power to the top, but I haven't found any.

Bug report: Title images for open contests incorrect on mobile device

Minor bug report. On a mobile device (Android Moto X) using the Instructables app (version 2.0.2), when looking at the open contests, some contests (incorrectly) have the same title image. See attached screenshots. Specifically, the DIY University Contest and Hunter-Gatherer Contest both have the same incorrect contest title image (the Remix Contest's image), and the Hand Tools Only Contest has the incorrect contest title image (the Teach It! Contest's image). So, it's super minor, but thought you'd like to know.

Help with 33cc Gas Scooter? Answered

I have a 33cc gas scooter (sounds nerdy, I know), on the side I can make out what looks like Moto Rebel but not sure. It was used twice, sat in garage for one year without gas in the tank, then sold to me for $20 (Amazing price for something that's $350 new). Like new! It is 2-stroke but am unsure of the model number. It starts runs on choke between a small margin but won't run on ON, which is above choke on the switch. I think it may need the idle screws adjusted but am unsure. Has new and correct gas oil mix in tank and has primer button. Help would be appreciated.

Instructables App "network error"

I tried to use the Instructables app to write an instructable. I loved it, writing an instructable as you go and clicking the camera button was great, made it really easy. BUT when I got done and went to publish it I clicked publish and it said it was uploading photos.  I laid my phone down, Moto G running kitkat 4.4.2 on the counter, when I came back it said network error unable to upload.  So I clicked done and tried to upload again, this time it immediately said network error couldn't upload.  So I completely closed the app tried again, same.  Restarted Phone, same. All the while having a strong WIFI signal.   So as last resort, I cleared app cache, well, this deleted my instructable........ Those should really be stored in a separate file that is not erased by a cache clear. So what was wrong? I had a great internet signal, there was NO network problems. Webpages and instructables in the app loaded fast.

I am in need of assistance regarding electric motors.

I am planning on making a electric powered vertically sliding pet door.  I have all the mechanical and pulleys etc worked out but am ignorant regarding small electric motors. I am very competent regarding wiring and circuits/relays etc, only issue is the power for the unit.  I know they sell units like this but i want to build my own.  I need the motor to move slowly one way and stop when i cut power using a switch and when next powered to reverse until the switch cuts power so on and so on.  Any ideas as to where I can purchase a motor such as this?  Radioshack has zilch, so i assume I am going to need to go online.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I have been planning this in my mind for quite a while, generally right around the time the dog door breaks in the dead of winter.  Thanks for any help! Joe

Custom Droid Radio Mount

So I am the happy new owner of both a Moto Droid and a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. However these two products seem to show no love for the other, at the moment in order to both charge my phone and play music through the car speakers I am required to go through a very awkward series of steps and entangling wires that seem to be bent on strangling me. As an avid lover of customizing my own items I wondered "is there a way to make this simpler?" and realized: screw simplicity, I can make it WAY more awesome! And so my endeavor began. The Droid media dock can be interfaced into a faceplate in which you drop the Droid on it then slide it to the left, plugging in the phone into both the audio and the power. To the left of this is a smaller panel with the LED readout of what station the tuner is set to for when the radio is set to AM/FM, along with a volume dial, seek buttons, and buttons that switch the input between Aux, Cd, AM, and FM. The issue is I am a programmer at heart and have very little experience in electronics, I wrote out the binary circuitry with little to no problem, my problem is that I don't trust my novice skill when it comes to the calculations for volts and amps being received at parts of a circuit. I think this is a ridiculous project and is way more complicated than it should be, and that is why it is awesome and needs posted on Instructables! Once building really begins I will take lots of pictures and make a formal write up to put up! Thanks everyone for reading this rant/plead for help!

First Motorcycle, budget

Hi. I've recently been hooked on motorcycles. I'd love to get one and start riding and working on one. There are a few problems. First off, I'm only 13 years old, but I'm 5'11" and 160 lbs. I know that it's illegal for me to ride a motorcycle, and I'm not even sure if I can take a mfs course at this age. I wouldn't be riding on any big roads, and would barely even ride it, besides riding it to my best friends house (he'd help me work on it, his dad is into bikes, and he only lives a few miles away), and around a few back roads in my neighborhood. My dad has been riding motorcycles for before I was born, and has multiple types and sizes of bikes (he has a touring Harvey, I believe it's a VRSC, a ninja 600, and a dirt bike which I don't know the model of). He could teach me and show me how to properly ride a motorcycle. Also, I don't know what kind of bike to get. I've heard dual purpose bikes are good for starters, but I really have no idea where to start. I'd appreciate input. Preferably it'd be a bike that I could work on and modify/upgrade as I go along. Thirdly, is price. I don't really know my exact budget, but it'd be around $600-$700. I know it's barely anything, but I'd have to pay for the bike myself, and that's all I have. If it's even possible to purchase a bike at this price point, it doesn't even have to run, I'd love your input. Ideally I'd like to keep everything to the absolute bare minimum, as cheap as possible. My dad already has safety gear, and I could borrow it if I rode my bike.  Again, thanks for your input, and any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Controlling a DC motor (12v) using a SN754410 Motor Driver Ic and 2 snap-action switches?

I am using a Arduino Uno with a SN754410 ic to control my 12v motor (exactly like diagram from http://itp.nyu.edu/physcomp/Labs/DCMotorControl) Managed to use a SPDT switch to change direction (sheer miracle for me) I plan to put 1 snap-action switch in front of my bot and 1 at the back, so it will travel forward until it hits an obstacle, then reverse all the way until it hits another obstacle. Once the motor is activated, it will go maybe go for 5 minutes, then pause for 10mins, then on for 5 mins again, and so forth. First attempt with the arduino so any help with detailed instructions about how to go about wiring these two extra switches and the programming code would be greatly appreciated! Also, I need it to be mobile so I'm thinking of connecting a 12v2.2AH/20HR sealed rechargeable battery to the motor itself, and another 9v for the board cos I read it regulates it to 5v. Will this be ok? Will it be able to last my bot for a few hours? My current code: int switchPin = 2;    // switch input int motor1Pin = 3;    // H-bridge leg 1 (pin 2, 1A) int motor2Pin = 4;    // H-bridge leg 2 (pin 7, 2A) int enablePin = 9;    // H-bridge enable pin     void setup() {     // set the switch as an input:     pinMode(switchPin, INPUT);     // set all the other pins you're using as outputs:     pinMode(motor1Pin, OUTPUT);     pinMode(motor2Pin, OUTPUT);     pinMode(enablePin, OUTPUT);     // set enablePin high so that motor can turn on:     digitalWrite(enablePin, HIGH);   }     void loop() {     // if the switch is high, motor will turn on one direction:     if (digitalRead(switchPin) == HIGH) {       digitalWrite(motor1Pin, LOW);   // set leg 1 of the H-bridge low       digitalWrite(motor2Pin, HIGH);  // set leg 2 of the H-bridge high     }     // if the switch is low, motor will turn in the other direction:     else {       digitalWrite(motor1Pin, HIGH);  // set leg 1 of the H-bridge high       digitalWrite(motor2Pin, LOW);   // set leg 2 of the H-bridge low     }   }

Motorized Panoramic head with microcontroller

Hi All, I want to build a motorized panoramic head. It must be made in PIC or ATMEL because I have only these options. Arduino board are not available to me  How it works.  Its basically controlling two stepper motors using inputs from photographer. Photographer inputs values in parameters and than microcontroller uses these parameters to rotate camera frame and take pictures. Parameters are as under: There are two stepper motors. One motor rotates frame of camera on x-axis and one rotates it on y-axis.  1. For x-axis motor parameters    a. Total numbers of steps to rotate.    b. One motor movement = 1 stepper motor step or more. For example we can move stepper 2      steps in on movement    c. After each movement (point#2) It takes image or press camera button by using relay or optocoupler    d Time Delay : When camera takes picture it takes time to save on memory card. We can define time in seconds as per picture size.    e : When it completes total number of steps defined in step#1. It moves back to its zero position. 2. For Y-axis moto parameters     a: When first motor completes its full number of steps than y-axis motor is activated.     b: y-axis: Total number of steps      c: one movement = how much motor steps. just like x-axis motor parameter     d:   Time Delay : same as x -axis motor. time delay after tilting frame.      e: y-axis motor just performs only one movement. Than again it activates x-axis motor.     f: Panoramas are made in multi rows. so this process of x-axis and y-axis motor activation should keep on going. It is terminated when y-axis motor completes its total number of steps. So the whole process is like this Turn on microcontoller  Add parameters for x-axis and y-axis motors click on start button microcontroller starts rotating frame on x-axis Frame start moving in steps. Than frame completes its first x-axis turn now microcontroller activates y-axis motor. Y-axis motor tilts frame upper arm in one direction.   code checks it is Y-axis motor final movement or more to come. If more than it activates x-axis motor. X-axis motor starts repeating whole process which it previously did. Than after full movement on x-axis and it activates y-axis motor. This process is terminated when total movement defined for y-axis motor is achieved. CAN ANYBODY MAKE ITS CIRCUIT AND PROGRAM CODING ? I M TOTALLY BLANK IN MAKING CIRCUITS AND WRITING CODES.

Help sought for DIY 12V for 120V Blender Boat Motor

Howdy, I’m hoping someone could give me a hand with jerry rigging a DIY trolling motor battery for a small boat (not a toy, but made out of many many water bottles, pvc, etc.) that will not get too much use. I need it to be very inexpensive and reasonably light. 10 D cells in a PVC pipe would be great. 20 would not be too bad. I am pretty much electrically illiterate. Here is what I have so far. I have an immersion blender … one of those things that Emeril Lagasse calls “boat motors”. I can attach a drive shaft and propeller to it. Because it is designed for being in liquids with more resistance than water (though with a smaller prop/blade), I think it will have sufficient torque to get some push. I will not know if it is enough until I give it a try, but I do know that weed wackers can be so converted and I don’t think they have much torque. The part I am stuck on is hooking it up to batteries. It is a 120V plug in device. I have a small 75 Watt inverter. I can plug the blender into the inverter and that into a car lighter and it runs well. I have hope! I understand that I should have 120 Watt inverter, but 75 is what I have. I have an accessory car lighter outlet to plug the inverter into. It has a red line with a fuse box mid way and a black line, identified as a ground line with a loop at the end. The directions say to screw that loop into the frame of a car and connect the red to the hot battery line. But as I am not using a car that is not of much help. I tried stringing 10 AA batteries together end to end, temporarily held snug with duct tape, and connect it to the inverter with the accessory lighter plug outlet, but I did not have any luck. The motor did not spin and the inverter power light did not come on. I used electrical tape to connect the red to the positive end of the string and tried taping the black to the negative and also to a knife to ground. I tried AA as I know those will get used one way or another. I did not want to invest in D’s until knew it would work. As I understand it, D’s will last longer. (I am not interested in re-charging). Since then, I came across a few bits of info on another site. One thread mentioned using a spring from, say a flash light, at the negative end and a bolt at the other. Another said that PVC was great for grounding. Some useful bits of info are that in addition to the 120V, the motor runs at 1.0 Amps. I do not know if the 60 hertz is relevant. Does any one have any ideas about how to do something this? Do I just need to replace the fuse and try again with D’s? How do I connect the lines? Wrap the red around a bolt through a capped pvc tube and tape the ground to the side of the tube, with a spring in the other capped end touching the negative end? Do I need two 10 series in parallel? I can stack batteries end to end, but how do I connect parallels, especially without soldering? I do not want to use a 12 volt car or marine battery. This motor is not going to get enough use to justify the cost of such a battery and charger and I do not what to deal with the weight. If I can get 10-15 minutes of power from a stack of D-cells (hopefully more time), I would call that a success as this is a learning experience as much as anything. An hour would be much better. Thanks in advance for any help.

5 Things I Like About the Blackberry Torch—And a Few I Don't

Is the Blackberry Torch much better than an apple iphone ? No, but right here are the explanations why it is good sufficient for me personally . Research moving amazed us a week back if this delivered a Blackberry Torch review device . Evidently , the organization sent many of them . It appears as though individuals at Edge are greater than a small anxious concerning the marketplace wedding reception for this telephone and it is general probabilities for achievement . I do not fault them. This polarizing item has evaluations which are mostly free of charge yet others which are currently phoning the Blackberry Torch 9800 underwhelming or even worse . Its earlier sales—150K within the very first weekend—are nowhere fast close to Iphone product sales amounts , however they are nevertheless reputable . Last 7 days , I acquired into a disagreement concerning the BlackBerry Torch having a Gizmodo publisher . This person is most likely two decades more youthful than me and may only see the Flashlight with the prism of the Iphone . The technologies now has wrinkles he explained and also the display quality , in the current 800-by-480 globe , is awkward . I would recently been transporting the Flashlight close to for several days , and that i merely could not accept him. I will not dispute the truth that the apple iphone 4 is a superb item . And also the lot of Google android mobile phones , with and with out key boards , are great items . I love the Android By , for example , although I believe it is too large to transport close to on the day time -to- day time foundation . I love the initial Android and Android 2, although I believe Moto continues to have some function to complete on that computer keyboard . The keyboard—really any cell phone keyboard—is, to some extent , in the core of my difference using the Gizmodo publisher . He, like a number of other earlier 20-somethings, is completely comfy with no bodily computer keyboard . I am not . There are lots of individuals during my era much like me and in all likelihood numerous current Edge clients who nevertheless choose Messaging mobile phones . But departing apart the yawning generational variations , I love the Flashlight and that i appreciate utilizing it . Furthermore I not skip my BlackBerry Bold 9000, I'm not going it back again . Here is why: 1) The Internet browser : Indeed , chiefly a credit score towards the Rim Operating system 6, but with no touchscreen and accelerometer, which allows me change from landscape and portrait setting , the knowledge would not be fifty percent of the same quality . It is certainly quicker , deals with practically any type of Site , and it is supported with a display that, whilst not as high definition like a Android or apple iphone , is definitely razor-sharp sufficient for my eye . 2) The House Display : Edge has been doing a pleasant work using the accessible property about the Flashlight display , and that i adore the way the display techniques remaining to correct and down and up . I'm able to reside in the All display , however , just like other configurable cellular systems , I'm able to personalize it too . You will find a number of symbols about the All display , so having the ability to transfer some to Faves is really a encouraged alter . I am also happy the written text information image has become towards the top of their email list . On my small Daring , I frequently skipped texts since the image was crammed nicely beneath digital collapse . Additionally , I love that a few of the essential applications , like Tweets , are actually a fall behind area of the program . 3) The Touchscreen : I did previously personal a Hand Treo and try to valued the mixture of contact and bodily inputting . Given , the old Hand display was limited . The Flashlight , however , isn't . I love will be able to use actions to maneuver with the numerous displays . Adding the touch and move is encouraged , although , I can not picture somebody starting an impression display without them . 4) The Look : The Flashlight is weightier than my Daring , however it seems excellent during my hands . The line is good , although not groundbreaking . There's something really Rim - ant concerning the Torch—and I am good with this . 5) The Laptop Keyboard and Touch pad : Indeed , the laptop keyboard has a smaller footprint along with a little bit much more confined than my Daring , but Edge has because of the secrets somewhat formed sides , so they are simpler to really feel . I'm able to nevertheless perform some inputting with out checking secrets . Basically kind with an apple iphone , I must view my cerebral vascular accidents ( do not detest me simply because I am aged ). Those who have a mature Contour or very first - era Daring will value the track pad . Nevertheless , the main reason it is fascinating about the Flashlight happens because it life correct beneath a complete touchscreen . In the beginning I asked yourself the reason why you would want the track pad using the motion - powered display . Nevertheless , I quickly grew to become skilled at utilizing it for just one really significantly feature—something that's not very easy to complete with an apple iphone : shifting a cursor close to via characters , phrases , and obstructs of textual content . On an apple iphone , I location my hand exactly where I wish to choose and maintain it before the cursor techniques to that particular place . Basically maintain for any 2nd lengthier , my choice resources seem . There isn't any good way to browse via textual content . The Torch's track pad allows me transfer my cursor anyplace I want—in connects and text—and then begin choosing , duplicating , sticking , and so on . It is a delicate distinction but one that is essential for a particular type of person .
