Awareness is Empty

It's a new month.  That apparently means it's time for champions of various causes to ask their online friends to repost something about awareness for whatever cause. This month happens to be April.  One of the many causes assigned to this month is autism awareness.  I'm married to an aspie.  We have three autistic children. Being "aware" of autism is about as helpful for autistics as posting your bra color in your facebook status is for curing breast cancer.  A well known autism charity likes to champion their feel good cause with pictures of children and alarmist catchphrases about how tragic and dream crushing autism is, and how we need to cure it now.  I really hope that this community doesn't need a lengthy explanation (although I can also cite sources, if you like) about why the notion of curing autism is as offensive and misguided as a campaign for "ridding the world of nerds" might be.  Let me know if you need more information on the heritable physiological structural brain differences that define autism, and the sensory and filtering challenges that determine an individual's struggle with the less advantageous sides to that type of brain. You know what's more appropriate than autism awareness?  Autism acceptance.  Everyone is born with different challenges and different talents.  Some people have very different reactions to sensory stimuli.  Try to be sensitive to that.  Allow people to be who they are without trying to force them into some arbitrarily shaped mold. If you want to learn more about what it's like for autistic people, look up first hand accounts (and ask people you might know who are on the spectrum) - there are many accounts out there, and they're quite diverse.  The more you read, the more you'll understand.  I don't understand why people would think they're getting accurate information about autism by searching the website of an organization that actively excludes autistics from any board or leadership position.  Then again, that organization touts operant conditioning as a therapy for autistic children, because apparently it's better to force a child to seem normal than to understand why he acts in unique ways and help meet his unique needs. Supporting the idea of neurodiversity doesn't mean that every difference is fantastic and easy to deal with.  It's not. Focusing solely on the negative aspects of anything can make you overlook the gifts that come with it.  I take medication for my ADD to help with the challenges that come with that, but I certainly don't try to eradicate it (which would be impossible anyway).  If my medication muted the positive aspects of ADD, I'd have to seriously reconsider whether it was worth it.  Karate or dance lessons to help with the proprioceptive challenges that can come with autism don't negate any positives, nor does compassionate speech therapy. I won't be "going blue" this month for awareness, which does little more than promote a large corporation with questionable intent.  I'm all for scientific research, but the agenda behind their funded research is highly suspect. Do you have an ache to do something for autism whatever month?  Tell a friend that instead of posting images of puzzle pieces, you're going to be more accepting of differences.  If, for some reason, you really want to spend money on a cause, you could try something practical like buying an autistic kid a lego set (not one of my kids, though... I am so sick of stepping on those darn things).  Obviously Legos aren't appropriate for all ages, nor for all spectrum kids... just ask the parents for guidance.  Toys or fidgets relevant to the kid's interests are great, especially if they help the kid further develop their unique analytical skills. If you really want to donate to some organization for some reason... there's an autistic self advocacy network. Oh, and for the record...  normal brains don't change the world.

Do you have an appreciation of the ocean and are all about open-source? I'm looking for people to share ideas with me.

Hi, I’m working on a project about making society more aware of the ocean. This project is my master graduation project. The envisioned project will involve the open-source community; this is why I am looking for people to talk to on this matter and to share ideas. If you are already convinced, please send me a message. I promise you, I will not spam you to death. I am looking for people that have an appreciation or connection with the ocean and are all about DIY and open-source and are willing to share ideas with me. Some more info on the project: As I see it we (society) are very connected to the ocean, most of the everyday objects are in someway shipped across the ocean. Eventually ending up as plastic bits in the ocean. Even before the Industrial Age we’ve been exploring the world with ships on the ocean.  We’ve been shipping diseases, slaves, religion and tobacco around the world in small wooden ships. The ocean also acts as the source of life, in other words, all of the creatures on land came from the ocean. The ocean provides us also with an import source of protein to feed the world; fish. The ocean houses tiny creatures called plankton that are critical for the planet. Most people don’t realize that a mouthful of seawater contains millions of bacterial cells, hundreds of thousands of phytoplankton and tens of thousands of zooplankton. Although we have this strong connection with the ocean we have yet to explore 90% of it. In our ordinary lives we’ve been so disconnected of the environment around us, the only thing the majority of people see are the beaches, the endless blue, until of course, some oilrig blows up and washes oil up on the shore. The project I am working on sees opportunity in creating a connection with the ocean somehow. This is not an easy challenge, I cannot do this alone, I am asking a community of people that think outside the box, are hands-on and are compassioned about what they do for help. Message me if you would like to be involved!

My xbox ftp username is stuck to "None". I can't give it a username and as a direct result, I can't FTP?

How, if at all possible, can I fix this?  I have a flash drive, but it only transfers at 640 KBs per second, as apposed to 3000+ KBs for a network cable.  It takes forever to transfer my games to my new hard drive and I am about to go crazy.

Have I Upset Instructables?

Hi everybody, I just want to know what I have to do to get featured. Now before someone points me to the thread that shows the format, I am aware of that post and it is helpful too. However I feel I meet the requirements to be featured, but I'm just not getting the breaks. I've studied who and what gets featured and can see no set goal post. I've seen some of my articles viewed and favourited more than others but then get overlooked. So the instructable community liking my work isn't a problem. I don't expect all of my instructables to be featured but I have noticed some people enjoy a high feature rate - I'm not sure what they do that I don't. Have I done something to upset the instructable team? Is there something I could do ensure a better chance of being featured? (As long as it's not sexual or involves money. lol) I only ask this as I want the maximum number of people to see my work as possible. Which is helped greatly by being featured. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated, Go Repairs

What laser do I need for laser etching?

The questions says it all; I am planning to build a custom 2-axis computer controller etching machine out of a modified ink-jet printer. The motorisation and computation part it not a problem yet, however I have no clue where to start from about looking for a laser. I am looking foward engraving/etching wood, metal, plastic and some other soft materials. I do not plan to CUT these however. I do not know what kind of laser I am exactly looking for, nor it's power or anything else I should be aware of, including where to order it from. Even, will a DVD burner diode do the job? If you have any past experience with laser etching, or laser technology, please contribute as I would be very grateful. Thank you.

I HATE group work.

HATE HATE HATE!It is really the one thing I dread about school. More than anything. It makes me want to pull my hair out. It is a requirement in Kentucky schools that you have a group assignment in each class and it makes my life a living hell.I always end up doing all the work and I really don't like other people getting the same grade as me for doing nothing! For example - I am in a group with five other people right now, 3 of which are athletes. They can never do anything. They constantly say they're busy. They decided that we should do our outside work tomorrow, right before I have to go into work. And as if that's not stressful enough, none of them actually mentioned doing the work we need to do before we go out and do assessments. The pre-assessment work is very involved - we have to do six physical activity assessments on elementary school kids, with 3 criteria that should be met for each assessment, as well as making up data collection sheets for each assessment. We also need to get our assessments OK'd by the teacher before we go. So now I'm sitting here stressing out wishing that I could just do this project myself and ease the pain. I emailed the teacher and let him know what was going on, and none of my group mates have emailed me back yet.I think I'm going to go make grumpy faces in the other room and get off the computer. :P

Algae biofuel oil refining?

I have long been a fan of the idea of renewable energy from algae colonies, but I have yet to find any information on actually refining the oil produced with the algae.  I am well aware of how to remove the oil, however at that point it is just an organic crude.  Is their a process to refine it to a more diesel or gasoline-like state, or is it efficient enough to run an engine on the crude.  I am currently growing a reasonable algae colony and would appreciate assistance in doing something with the algae after it is grown.

How would I make a simple Infrared Heater?

I am planning on build ing IR Heater. would a 6 millimeter IR emmiter with 960 millimeter wavelength work to produce heat? If your not aware with IR heaters then here is a short explanation: A normal heater such as a gas heater heats up the surrounding air, but a IR heater uses infrared waves to heat up surfaces of objects. So instead of heating surrounding air the IR waves heat up surfaces of objects. Also IR waves penetrate the epidermise (top layer of skin). Here is a diagram of what the circuit looks like. The question is would this circuit work? Also are 6millimeter IR emmiter with 960 millimeter wavelength work?

In-car arduino BT remote -> Iphone

I have tried understanding this article - https://davidfindlay.org/weblog/files/2009_09_07_ipod_remote.php - but a lot of the stuff goes over my head because I am a programming/arduino/electronics simpleton/beginner - does anyone know of some simple ways I might be able to send requests to my Iphone to be interpreted by Spotify?
