Update! What is the EASIEST distro to learn Linux with? Also, where can I find some Linux tutorials? I'm looking for tutorials written in layman's terms, not a bunch of command line junk ;]......Yeah, I know... we have too many computers...So basically, I rounded up all our old PCs to see what's worth keeping. So far, I've completely restored 2 of them back to day one. One of them was already running XP, the other was running 98, so I installed XP on it. The one that came with XP I decided to "Vista-ize" using CharredPC's WinXP Overhaul Guide. Check out my pics, and then make sure you check out his I'ble, I definately reccomend it.Anyway, down to business. Okay, so 1 machine is running XP in the guise of Vista. I like it so far. But what about the other four? Well, let's not get too carried away. I know that at least one other works, so let's get started with that...I want to make the other working PC to run some sort of Linux. Probably Ubuntu, based on research thus far. But, what better way to get feedback then from the Instructables community? So what do you guys think? Which version of Linux do you like best? Which ones can I make look like Vista, XP, or Mac OS X?As for the other three PCs... one of them I want to gut and salvage parts to make a NES PC for my brother (okay, I might use it too...) I'll probably get a version of Linux for that, too; maybe DSL.

PC Jukebox OS?

Hi guys, I recently salvaged a decent PC runing on a Pentium 4. I got a LCD monitor with it too, and was in hope of making a DEDICATED jukebox. I was wondering if ther is some OS for  a pc thats sole purpose is to store music and replay it, with some customizations available of course. If not, I see that there are plenty of jukebox software out there to install on linux or XP, but I was wondering if there was any program that executes itslef when windows start. Please and than you for any help!

Custom uber simple OS?

After playing in the world of arduino for a while I have become curious if it is possible to use a common cpu, motherboard ect. To do the same thing as with a small microprocessor. Could one for example load the arduino bootloader to a cpu or just write to it with serial in order to use it for purposes similar to arduino and picaxe.  I know its a weird and wasteful idea but im just curious if it is even possible with modern electronics. I dont think it would be hard to find a junked old desktop and even if it was 1 mhz (much more likely to be 1 ghz) it would be extremely fast. Could you imagine an arduino with that clock speed! You could measure the length of pulses much smaller and you would be able to potentially handle 32 bit and maybe even 64 bit operations. Just a curious thought I had, could it be done and what would you do with such a system

PC refuses to install any OS

I have a PC that I need to get operational again after an accident with some overclocking software (either ClockGen or setFSB). The actual hardware seems to be working, and will install several different versions of XP as far as the first reboot, on which it will BSOD and restart the install in a loop. I have also tried installing Ubuntu from a USB drive, which I know works, and the computer does not accept it as bootable. The system has been unplugged with the BIOS battery out for a couple of months, so the BIOS is not causing it. It is running with minimal hardware, as follows: Intel Celeron D @ about 2.5GHz Replacement 20Gb IDE HDD, or original 150Gb (both do the same thing) on IDE1 CD/DVD drive on master of IDE2 I know it's pretty much obsolete, that's why I need it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Unable to post comments (Safari/OS X), Unable to reply (Firefox/OS X)

I tried to post a comment to this page: Using Safari 6.0.2 on OS X 10.8.2 but no Captcha appears at all and clicking "Post" just reloads the page. I then switched to Firefox (18.0.2, same OS) and was able to post. Later I tried to reply to a post but this time the Captcha for the reply box doesn't appear (although it does still appear for the new comment box). Clicking "Post" on the reply box prompts me to complete the Captcha that never appears. I do have ad-block active on Safari, but not on Firefox. Bummer- I'd like to contribute to the thread!

Cut n Paste with Android?

Annoyed with droid. Cut n paste feature...   when pasting, a long press will cause a " paste" icon to pop up... SOMETIMES... but icon will disappear if you press longer than 0.72 second, or thereabout.  Is there a more reliable paste option with android?  It often takes 5 or 6 tries to get that 0.7  plus or minus 0.02 second sweet spot.

I need help identifying a half built server I found in an old storage unit?

We were recently cleaning through a storage unit. I came across what appears to be an old half-built (desktop) server. It is not completely built so I am looking to finish building it. It is custom built, so there are no stickers or modal numbers that I can see. It has 4x 1gb ram chips. Two hard drives (with room for three more), fans, processor, and dvd drive. I knew how to insert the ram chips but I don't know how to connect all the power cables inside. I'm hoping to find instructions some place. I could use some help. I have done some computer programming, so I know what the parts look like and function to some degree but not enough to put this together. I don't want to risk damaging it since it may be worth a lot more than a 10+year old pc. I don't think there is an operating system loaded, and I'm not sure how to go about that either. Any suggestions?  Although I can't find any stickers, there may be some other label located somewhere, but it wouldn't be too obvious. Any suggestions on where it might be located?

Moving Programs from one OS to another?

Hi! I dual boot XP and Ubuntu 10.10 on a laptop. XP runs really really slowly. I want to move some programs from the XP partition to the Ubuntu partition and run them with wine. However, when I try to do this, it runs, but I get an error telling me that I need to reinstall because there has been a problem. No more details than that. Has anyone done this before and can give me some advice? Also, yes I have marked them as executables and they are large programs... like Photoshop and Dreamweaver, so not just a simple exe to transfer. Thanks!

How to connect a landline to Mac on OS X?

---The Problem---- I've searched high and low for something that will allow me to connect my normal landline (see links at bottom of post) to my MacBook Pro (2.16GHz core 2 duo, on OS X Snow Leopard).  The landline is my work landline, so I can't change it. I really just want to connect it to my Mac through its "To TEL" port, which according to the manual is for connecting phones in parallel. The minimum I want to be able to do is get audio from the landline to my computer's speakers and audio to it from my computer's speakers. My goal is to be able to work handsfree on my computer while I type. I'm not keen on a headset for the landline because I hate cables and get tangled up while I type. If I get my voice routed through to the phone through the Mac's microphone and sound to come out through my speakers from the caller's voice I'd be jumping for joy. I'd be rocketing for joy if through some way I managed to use an AppleScript I found (see links at bottom of post) to dial out of AddressBook to the landline. That would be tres cool, but that'd be me getting greedy. ----What I've been able to find out (I'm pretty clueless)------ PCs can do this with an RJ11 to USB adapter. There are rumors that the DLink DPH-50U works with OS X with a driver no one can seem to find. Apple stopped making their USB external modems, which didn't cater for voice anyway. I'm willing to buy stuff to make something if I need, although if it comes to writing drivers I'd need a lot of direction. ----The question----- Does anyone have any clever ideas on how to solve the problem? ----Links------ My landline manual: AppleScript to dial from AddressBook:;=10 Most thankful in advance for any ideas!

What os is right for me and my laptop? Answered

I'm going back to collage and at this point i feel stuck with my laptop. I currently have window 7 running on it since all the driver issues are not a problem, but the boot is incredibly slow, it was that way for xp too. I used linux on the laptop before but I had issues with my video card driver not working and not being able to nativly run office 2007 or somthing that can open docx and pptx files without problems. I'm also able to play mine craft on windows 7 but not on linux becouse of the video driver problem. In short, do I stick with linux because it's faster and lighter with less abilities or sick with slower windows that from time to time will freeze. Just to mention I have an thinkpad t42. (please no comments saying get a new laptop i can't afford it).

Windows 95 Answered

Hello, I have been trying to install c++ on windows 95 with 2 versions of Bloodshed Dev.cpp software, When I installed it things were fine, but when I try to run the app I get an error that says "A required .DLL file, SHFOLDER.DLL was not found." Another version of Devcpp also meant for windows 95 gave me an error about a missing .DLL. I believe these are vital to the OS files and since they are missing it is a bad sign. What should I do to make it work without messing up my computer? Thanks for your help.

Reprogramming MaKey MaKey on different OS'es

EDIT: Thanks to Jay Silver and the Joylabz team for coming up with This can be used in beta/v1.2 MaKey MaKeys, but older MaKey MaKeys still need to be reprogrammed using Arduino IDE. On that note, any help here is appreciated but this may not be as high a priority since Joylabz is switching how they do things. Hey, all. With the upcoming MaKey MaKey Build Night in January, I wanted to post an open invite for more reprogramming tutorials. Mac is officially supported by Joylabz, and there is already a general Windows and Mac reprogramming tutorial out in the wild. There is also a tutorial each for one version of Ubuntu, Windows 8, and iPad. Looking for a better Windows 8 tutorial, Windows 8.1, RaspberryPi, Android devices, and anything else. Here's a P2PU course with more info: Thanks for any help out there!

Media computer

Hello all.  I have been having a really fun time going through the forums lately.  I started in the tech section or whatever it is called.  I have no idea what page I am on but I know I am looking at posts that are about 3 years old.  Not looking at every single post of course but about 5-7 posts per page.  But that is all besides the point, let me get to my question. The other day just because I happened to have an s-video cable around I hooked one of our laptops to the TV.  I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the image on the TV.  So I have decided to make an audio cable for it and start to use the computer on the TV for some stuff.  Money is tight around here (that is why I am making the audio cable and not buying one) and we do not have cable TV.  All we have is a converter box and ever since a really bad storm about 1 1/2 months ago we barely get any channels.  I am still trying to get management of my building to look at the antenna on the roof.  But after I saw what kind of quality the laptop had on the TV we are starting to look at getting netflix.  Figure it is only $7.99 per month and you get your first month free so I think it is worth checking out.  Since it looks like we will be using a computer with the TV quite often I have decided to make a media computer out of one of the towers sitting around here.  I am not worried about the power of the computer since the tower I have in mind is not all that old.  But I am trying to decide what OS to put on it.  I know there is a "Windows media" edition but I do not know much about it other then I think it is getting quite old.  I am leaning towards putting either XP or Windows 7 on it since I have those disks.  But I thought I would ask on here for peoples input on the matter.  I plan on networking the computer to my windows 7 desktop in order to access my 1tb hard drive for stuff I download.  My wife will be using this computer too so that is part of the reason I am leaning towards windows xp or 7 so she will not feel lost in some OS she does not know.  So now you have all the details.  Should I just go with XP or 7, or is there something else I should look at?

Nacho Installs Ubuntu. Looking for Kid-Friendly Apps.

. I had two HDDs fail at the same time on an old computer that the neighborhood kids use to surf the web. I went ahead and retired the old P3/550MHz machine and replaced it with a P4/1.8GHz unit I had laying around. Instead of using Win XP Pro, I decided this would be a good time to start switching my computers to Linux. Downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and once I figured out that a 2.5GB HDD was too small (Ubuntu would install OK, but run out of disk space when updating) and upgraded to a 20, the install went without a hitch. . Looking for suggestions on "edutainment" apps to install for kids from ~5yo to ~16yo. Computer is a 1.8GHz P4 with 256MB RAM, so the apps can't be resource hogs. TIA.

Talk me into Linux

I've been considering the switch to linux. I have currently loaded SimplyMEPIS onto an old laptop to give it a try, I was impressed. I think I like the Ubuntu Distro a little better but I'm teetering on the edge of a complete switch. I need a push over the edge. My issues at the moment is that the old crapy laptop is just kinda, what I call, my beater book. its the laptop I don't worry about to much and use for word proccesing on the run and simple Internet tasks. SimplyMEPIS works excellent for these purposes. My concern is compatibility with my everyday computer needs....... and my not so ordinary endevors. I would consider myself an Expert when it comes to Windows XP......... a step above Expert if there is such a thing...... I know it inside and out and I can manipulate it like a dirty 5 dollar crack whore. I realize there will be a learning curve but will it be compatible with everything I use in windows? ........ I do a lot of media editing and music recording....... is this a possibility in linux? (I realize Mac pro tools is my overall best option) somebody please convince me to switch beyond a shadow of a doubt. or talk me down from the ledge.
