On and Off Switch?

I have a kiln that I need maintained at a certain temperature for an extended period of time (9 hours). Problem is the kiln I got doesn't maintain its temp, it just constantly supplies heat until it would kill itself. Making me sit there for 9 hours turning it on and off exactly once a min. Obviously this is a problem... there is a physical on and off switch where maybe I can rig up some timer to hit it for me? Otherwise maybe there is a way to modify the wall outlet to supply power 1 min on, 1 min off? Any suggestions would help, thanks :D http://www.clay-king.com/images/quickfriec.jpg

Off To College

Greetings fellow iblers! Well, the summer has come to a rapid close, and in 4 days (!!!) I am going to be off to the University of Rhode Island, studying the arts of Mechanical Engineering, Philosophy, and the Spanish language. First off, I want to thank this awesome community (new members and old) for an awesome 4 year experience. Despite some drawbacks, this is a community that has greatly matured as mechanical designers, and more importantly, as members of a team, throughout the years, and I am proud to have been a part of it. Now, although I won't have access to K'nex, I will have access to a computer, to a pencil and paper, and to the resources that will strengthen and broaden my understanding of mechanical functions. This is not goodbye quite yet. I will still be very active among the community with comments and plan to continue my "Guide to the next generation of K'nex Guns" as long as I can find the time. I will also be thinking up new mechanisms and concepts (that's going to be my job in college anyways) and will post designs as much as I can. And who knows, I might just surprise you guys with something over Christmas break. *hint hint* I am going to try and get instructions up for my improved Kinno-2 within the next couple days. It now holds 8 shots, has a locking mag release, and will feature a much better bullet mag, so keep an eye out for it. Again, thanks to everybody who has made this such a great experience, and while my methods may change a bit, I will keep working to engineer a stronger community, no matter where I may find myself!

Fading an LED off, not on, just off?

I am trying to have a red LED fade off after it is switched on. I know I would need a capacitor, the question is, what value would be needed and would the cap be placed across + and - with the LED (and current limiting resistor) going from + to - as per usual if you see what I mean? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, kind regards

Latley I've noticed that when I recieve a few comments at one time, the couner is wrong, specificly it skips ahead a few numbers. For example; I checked my account yesterday the number said 441, today it said 444, however when I checked the comments, I found that only two were actually new. Has anybody else experienced this?

Temporary Log Off?

Hello, It seems that every time I try to view this (and ONLY this) instructable, my account is temporarily logged off, leaving me unable to comment, rate, or even favorite the post. (and it's a great share too, just what I was looking for!) I've notified the author of this as well, who also seems to be having trouble with their image tags. Could anybody please look into this? Pictures cut off

I started writing a new Instructable and noticed that when I use the preview function the pictures are cut off and therefore weirdly off centre. For some of the pictures it doesn't really matter, but some like I said look weird (as shown in the pictures). I don't see why there is a need to cut the pictures. Is this just an error and will it look better once the instructables is published?

I'm off for the night!

Kitewife has just handed me a shiny new copy of Unseen Academicals, by The Man Himself.Back in a few hours...UPDATEI'm back, and here is my favourite passage, which I can also post with spoiling anything:[He] took a sip of his beer. 'I have told this to few people, gentlemen, and I suspect never will again, but one day when I was a young boy on holiday ... I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, I am sure you will agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter divd into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen: mother and children dining on mother and children. And that's when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior'.

Hoverbike takes off

Australian Christopher Malloy has built what seems to be a working hoverbike. Built in his Sydney garage, with a custom carbon-fibre frame and a BMW engine, the machine is being touted as "Star Wars Speeder bike Mk1". Currently restricted to tethered flights of a few inches altitude, Malloy claims the bike feels stable, and is just waiting permission to undertake untethered tests. 'I am still ground testing at the moment only because I'm not 100 per cent sure what will happen so the straps are there to cover the unknown. I haven't had the pleasure of flying round the countryside yet. 'It is quite stable and doesn't want to tip over but if something unplanned happened during testing I wouldn't want to break the prototype. 'The Hoverbike was built with safety in mind so at least three components have to fail before you might have a serious airborne failure. 'There are also two explosive parachutes attached to the airframe and of course the rider could choose to wear their own parachute too. He predicts: 10,000ft altitude. 100mph 92 mile, 45 minute flight on one tank £45,000 pricetag The hoverbike should also have "ultralight" status - at only 270kg, under US regulations, no pilot's license would be required. Since it has no driven wheels, it shouldn't require a road license either...! Malloy is a former helicopter pilot, and says those skills are helpful when flying the hoverbike, but also says that the unique craft ultimately needs no more skill to fly than a motorbike, with speed and direction being controlled by a mixture of throttle and body-posture. As soon as I win the Lottery, I know who is going to get a knock at the door... Via Daily Mail

Fade LEDs on and off when the power is switched on and off

Hi, I'm still a complete novice when it comes to electronics so I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help. I'm rigging up some LED lighting for my aquarium which is set to switch on and off with timers on the mains supply to the house. The timers switch on/off the power transformers which supply the LED lights. I would love to find a way so that when the power comes on the lights fade on and when it goes out they fade out, would be nice if it was a long fade too, maybe 15-30 minutes, ideally 30 mins to an hour. I am guessing there would have to be some pretty big capacitors involved to that would fill up, increasing the brightness as they goe, when the power comes on and slowly discharge as the power switches off. Another thing to note is that I am using 2 different LED systems. The blue LEDs are using standard LEDs that are sold in blocks (3 LEDs per block, I'm using 3 blocks, so 9 LEDs total) and are designed to run on 12v. I am currently running them on 6v as they are pretty bright, but if the circuity could have them fade over an hour I would like to put them up to the full 12v. The white LEDs are 4 of 3w luexon star type LEDs that are running in serial. The system goes mains > 12v transformer > 3w LED Driver > LEDs. Here is a link to the driver I'm using http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item;=250752711282&ssPageName;=STRK:MEWNX:IT I assume that the fade device would have to go between the driver and the LEDs? Thanks for any help you can give me. Darren

Switch buying confusion. What is the difference between On - Off - On and (On) - Off - On? Answered

I am having some trouble buying switches from mouser. I need a toggle SPDT switch that has an On - On (on a different line) type workings (like seen here under SPDT). The problem is Mouser has so many different options in their "switch function" filter. Which one(s) should I use? What do the Parentheses mean? Does it mean Momentary or Something else? What about the "None" seen in a few options? What's up with "MOM"? Here is a link to the page I'm talking about.

Network ON/OFF Switch with Timer

Hello there, I am a network administrator and trying to create a simple device to test the alarms on our systems. Since I am not an electrician of any sort, I have an idea of what I need, but no idea of parts or names to order. Basically, I need to have a basic on/off switch with button that I can wire to a CAT5 cable. Simple enough, stops traffic at the push of a button but thats the obvious part. I also need to have some control over how long my connection times out, and after some research, I think a timer relay does that, but I can't be sure. It just needs to turn the activity back on after it goes off say between 1 second and 10 seconds off, the connection turns back on. If I can accomplish that, than I would also like to add a dimmer type device such as that of a light switch dimmer, but smaller and working with less voltage. So... Can this be done with all 3 electric devices? The closest thing I found in searching was some generic Lag Switch, but it did give me a starting idea of how to design it. I drew a simple draft of what I had in mind. Any help by some electric gooroo's would be most appreciated. Thanks! Jonathan

Lipo battery cut off

I'm using a couple of Lipo batteries to power a speaker on a trailer, I bought 2 low voltage alarms that plug into the balance cables but upon testing I found it to be unlikely that I'll hear them over the speaker. So would it be possible to modify the alarms so that they activate some kind of cut off device attached to the power cable instead? Each battery is 4s 10000mah.

Instructables Pizza Off 2008

I turned 25 this past week and celebrated my Birthday by organizing something that I've wanted to do for a long long time - a Pizza Off! A Pizza Off is an event where the participants order as many pizza pies as possible from as many different pizzerias as possible, bring them all to a central location at the same time, (Instructables HQ of course) and then eat them all and test which ones they like best! It's not something that you can do on your own, do to limitations of space, time and belly, so I was grateful when the entire Squid Labs community decided that this sounded like an awesome idea to them as well. The rules were simple (taken from the original email announcement):You must bring a pie with you. Think of it as a ticket for entry - if you plan on partaking, you've got to have a pie. We (as in the royal I) will allow sharing of one pie per two people. Ideally each person would bring their own pie, but I'm no tyrant.Your pizza must be from your favorite SF pizza joint. The pie you bring says something about who you are, so drive the extra mile to the place that's a little further, but twice as good. Each and every person in this building is beautiful, and your pizza should be too.You and your pie must arrive promptly at Instructables HQ at 1:00.You can bring whatever type of pizza you like, from whatever pizza joint you think is best. Ideally we'd all get plain cheese pies so we could truly compare, but if you've got to have something fancy on your pie, rock out. This event is all about two things: pizza and excess, so if you're thinking, oh I don't really need to bring a pie, it will be too much food...I'll just eat some pizza and stand around the table - you're wrong. This event only works if we hit critical pizza mass, so I'm counting on each and every one of you to help. When Tuesday rolled around, we ended up having 15 different pies from 13 different pizzerias! There were gourmet pizza pies from local worker owned bakery Arizmendi, traditional Italian cheese pies from North Beach, deep dish pies from San Francisco and East Bay favorite Zachary's, thin crust brick oven pies from Pizzeria Delfina and even Indian food pizza - which actually turned out to be an awesome flavor explosion!I almost made it "round the pizza world", but then some late entries showed up and the crusts caught up with me. There was a huge happy turnout, plenty of ravenous mouths, delicious pizza of all kinds and we all lived to tell the story of the first ever Pizza Off - all in all I'd call it a huge success! For anyone who doesn't already know, I love NY style pizza, and in my opinion, the best NY slices in San Francisco are from Arinell's on Valencia, so that's where I got my pie from. Everyone had their own favorites though, so I won't presume to report on any definitive results from the testing. I will say though that there's a pizza type for everyone, and I am never ceased to be amazed by the magic and wonder of Pizza. We're planning on having future Food Offs testing out other ubiquitous tasty foods. Some of the first things that I'd like to test are:Pad ThaiEgg RollsPhoBurgersIce CreamCoffeeRibsBurritosTacosAnyone else ever do anything like this? Find 15 friends who are as crazed about food as you are and make it happen!

Off-line Instructables Editor

Often, projects do not happen at our computer desk, or even somewhere with internet. Maybe you want to work on your Instructable on an airplane ride. Maybe you only have access to the internet at the library. Either way, it would be nice to have an official Instructables user interface that is available for download. You could completely flesh out your Instructable on your own time, without access to the internet, and then just upload the whole thing all at once. The steps, keywords, images, and instructions would all auto-fill into an online version and you'd be set! Woo! I understand this would take some work, but I'm just throwing it out there. Something preliminary could even just be a rudimentary template that you work within and then the site can read the template and grab everything it needs off your computer. Your thoughts?

I was able to confirm this with another member (so it's not just me). *Updated with screenshot of PM (viewing in Instructables) 2nd screenshot shows what PM's look like in my email (you'll see its really hard to read), and it wasn't like this before. After every word is (HTML non-breaking space).
