What should we call these parts. I always have trouble coming up with legitimate names. In your comments, please look at the numbering in the screen notes. EX.) 1loose gear, 2 small tireless wheel, 3 funnel, 4 cap gear, etc.

In the last 6 months, I had a 40" hd tv, a modem, a 27" monitor and a laptop all quit on me for various reasons. I'm wondering if I take them apart if there are any parts that are worth salvaging. I have only a basic understanding of electronics but love to tinker and want to take up arduino projects. What would you salvage if it were you? MK

My sister brought me home this part tonight from tech crew at school, she says she thinks it came from a fire alarm but were not sure. There are 2 lightbulb sockets and engraved on the metal it says "75W -125 v". Out of the back there are 6 wires, 1 red 1 black 2 white that are going into the large thing in the middle, and 1 black and 1 white coming out of the empty socket. the 2 sockets are also wired together. What is this part? is it simply a power supply with 2 light bulbs? The label says "Lithonia emergency systems on it" "input : 277 at 60hz (wht and black) output:120v 21.6VA (wht and red).

I have also tried the company that I had purchase from (2 Years ago) they do not carry replacement parts. The lamp is a Alvin lamp desk clamp, the lamp is in excellent and working condition. The only problem is the swevil part that connects the lamp head to the the swing arm. ( see pics) Any alternative idea or sudsititude would be helpful. Thanks

Hi, Unfortunately our washing machine stopped working the other day… It’s a seven years old Upo TL1200D for those who cares. It’s quite small and old, so my wife and I have decided to buy a new one. My question is, are there any valuable/notable parts I should disassemble for future DIY projects, before we throw it out? I know I could always open it up my self and have a look (plan b). Since our apartment is a bit space constrained, the idea of having lots of parts laying around is not so popular… :) I have overlooked good quality parts in the past when I have throwned stuff away, and I thought maybe someone in here have any ideas of what to toss and what to keep?

I have been to many sites, just trying to find one that carries, well, everything! I'll go to one, and it'll have a whole bunch of led's, but no resistors, or a whole bunch of switches but no led's. I end up spending a fortune on shipping by ordering parts for a project from 5 different sites. I would like to find a site that has all these things in one place. leds switches resistors capacitors transistors most other basic electronic stuff. Share your site!

I got a new knex set today. I got the double-sawblade ride. Now I get a whole **** load of blue rods, yellow rods, gray rods, and especially red rods (I only had 6 red rods before I got this set.)And I get much more yellow, white, blue, green, and gray connectors too. I think I may be able to build the sear rifle I have been hyping up in the chatroom for some time now. but This isnt really an end to my part limitations. I did not get a whole lot of short green rods, and the connectors only took one bag. Now my 550 tub is overflowing with the knex parts I have.Double sawblade is a good part booster.

Alright I know this question has been asked a hundred times before, but I've searched and none of them have been close to what I specifically want. I have two old computers with some fans and L.E.D's, and I was just wanting to find something to use these things for. Everything I find is either about restoring the computer or just using the shell of one. I want something like robots lights or something like that. Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

There is an extension cord (3 wire) which has a flat wall connector - great for tight spaces. I've bought some over the years (about $12 each at Amazon) - but want a supply of the plugs so I can make my own custom/length cords. I looked at a few electric parts places but no luck. Any ideas/sources for a less expensive flat plug adapter? One option is to replacc the wall outlet with a recessed outlet - but that does not work for me. thanks

I'm sure me and Skunkbait aren't the only ones who have kept car or motorcycle parts in odd places.I hear my dad kept a motocycle in his living room for years, because the place didn't have a secure garage. For a little while, if you wanted to sit while watching TV, you had to sit on the bike or the floor, because there was no other furniture. Plus, it's just priceless to be able to ride out your front door.I know some folks who keep spare electical bits like turn signals and partial wiring harnesses laying around the house. Hanging on doorknobs. Apparently, bachelors, those aren't just for hanging underwear anymore. There have been a few times that the chainsaw and lawnmower had to live in the house so a visiting motorcycle could live in our shed.Generally, whenever I get a new part or tool home, it has to spend some time just sitting around while I try to figure out what the best way is to use it. Or just figure out why it looked like a good idea to buy another timing light.I've been known to hang particularly sexy motorcycle parts on the wall. I spent a lot of time trying to get a 10-120 speedometer from a Volvo to work as a clock one time. That didn't work, but it did make a good paperweight.Where have you kept parts, and why?

Question by jibatsu | last reply
I'm curious about where instructables members purchase their electroincs parts. I've played around with electronics since high school, but I've always been in an environment where parts are "free" (aka paid for by others). Now that I'm branching out on my own, I'd like to know the best place to buy parts. I did a quick comparison of Jameco and Mouser on my blog. http://www.thelumberlab.com/2011/catalog-fight-jameco-vs-mouser I'd greatly appreciate it if you all could share your thoughts on this. Thanks so much.

When I was like 10, I would take apart all of my electronics that were broken, or not broken. Then I would play around with the parts with great curiosity. I once rigged alarm to my bedroom door, by fixing a string from in front of the door. When Someone broke it, the string would loosen a weight that would connect a wire to a motor, which would set off an old fashion alarm clock. It was tough to make, and as you know i would have to re string everytime someone came in my room. Recently while in a forum, someone mentioned Robomaniac`s tutorial of the beatle-bot. And this tutorial resparked an old intrest lying deep within.. Well my question is: Whenever I am taking an electronic object apart. What should I keep?? And what should I ditch??

Hey all, I'm looking for milky/fogged/hazy (I'm not sure what the right term) twist open plastic balls, like the one on the first picture. My plan is to put some LEDs in them to make glowing balls, but all I can find is clear plastic, as in the second picture. Any suggestion where can I get something like this? The size should be about 2" (diameter). -Greg

Hey there instructables fans. I've been reviewing your site for a while now, loving all the cool projects. I saw one project that was using some disused IDE connectors from a PC and it got me thinking.... part of my day job is running a WEEE recycling company in the South West of the UK. We process an awful lot of computers and although we re-use as much as we can of the computer stuff we recycle there is still a lot that goes to be shredded for material recovery. I'm always looking for new ways in which bits and pieces could get themselves a second life. Would this community be interested in any old computers bits and pieces? I'm not asking for money just enough to cover postage, perhaps some brave soul in the UK would like to take on a 'bulk order' and then distribute around? It's just a thought and my apologies if I've stepped on any toes or forum rules, I have no interest in making money from this just simply to get make a few small bits and pieces useful once again :) Please message back if interested!
