Raspberry Pi

Hello everyone I wanted some suggestions from the users of raspberry pi on where to start after getting the raspberry pi. I've searched the web and found a lot of things, but they weren't exactly beginners friendly. I am upgrading from an Arduino to a Raspberry pi and the difference between them is enormous. Arduino seemed a lot more welcoming and easier compared to Raspberry pi. So do you guys have some tips or places to start from for me? Any help is appreciated. Thank You

The Sounds of Pi

This is a rather interesting website... It converts the first 10,000 digits of pi into sounds. Here is the website! It will come up with some keys. You then select a note for 1's, then one for 2's, then one for 3's, and so forth. It's hard for me to explain, just give it a shot. There are instructions on the website.

Pi Calculator?

Hello all. I was at school this one day, and I asked some stupid question about Pi to my math teacher. He eventually told the class about how, when he was in school, the school got a computer, and hired a programmer to program it to calculate Pi. And it just kept on spitting out numbers. And it never stopped. NEVER! So, he would come in and look every day to see if it had figured out Pi. And all through his schooling, it didnt. I was just wondering, first of all, how would you make a program that keeps on spitting out numbers (pi) and NEVER stops? I mean, I have yet to see anything that can actually keep on calculating and NEVER EVER stop. Secondly, is there a program (.exe) that will do that? Just a simple command window that spits out numbers.. 3.14159 is what i know.. and i dont know if thats ever right! :P Anyway, I basically want something like what I described. I will put it on this old laptop I have and let it run. Probably under my desk or something. So.. yeah. Now, REPLY!! :) THANKS! :) :D :P :D :) :D :P :)

Pi Problems

I am trying to write a program that calculates pi. I am doing it in Visual C++. I am using the Gregory-Leibniz series. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to do the division necessary. It isn't returning decimals. For example, 4/3 returns 1, and 1/2 is returning 0. Is it even possible to get it to return decimals? I've tried using int, float and short as the answer variable and none worked.

Raspberry Pi Category

Is it possible to make a raspberry pi category in the technology section? Due to the increase in projects and popularity with micro-computers, it would be great to create its own little category.  Any Supporters?

Free Raspberry Pi?

I can't afford one currently and i thought it wouldn't hurt anything if i asked the community of makers if they had a extra raspberry pi to give away or if they had a raspberry pi model A that has been replaced by the model B.

How to Remember Pi!

This nifty poem I created is called a "piem", a pi poem. I only made a poem for the first 10 digits, but you can make more. For example, the first word has 3 letters, representing the # 3. The second has 1 letter, representing the # 1. et cetera. Here is one I made up:    For a week a broke belittled he person aided all. Notice the coinciding #s: 3     1    4    1    5          9        2       6         5     3  -->  3.141592653 --> the first 10 digits of pi.

Raspberry Pi Composite?

I have built the Ben Heck portable Raspberry Pi.  I had it working, but then I bumped the case and after that, the video will not start up.  My wiring to the monitor is all still good, and I know that it is getting power.  The only thing is, that during the bump, the video data and ground cables may have shorted.  Could this have caused the problem?  Whether it did or not, can anybody please help me fix it?

Is this possible with the Raspberry Pi?

So I have recently purchased a Raspberry Pi and I finally go the time to mess around with it a little bit.  So far i have only installed the NOOBS software and have downloaded the recommended Raspian operating system, and have been using it as a desktop computer.  That is all I have done so far.  So I have an idea of something i want to create with the Pi.  I also have the camera module for the Pi and I'd like to put it to use.  I would like to have the Pi, with the camera module attached and operating, in one location, with a monitor of some sort, possibly a cell phone or just a display i would purchase, and have the camera wirelessly send the video feed to the monitor.  I'm assuming this is possible because i have seen instructables on here where people use the Pi to make security cameras. My idea is similar, just none of the ibles i found quite hit the idea on the head.  So, i guess i'm looking for someone to tell me if this is possible, and point me in the direction of how to go about doing this, or if there are any ibles on here that are exactly this that I have missed. Thanks

Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

Well I am a 16 year old High School student interested in engineering and things of that sort. I recently took an engineering class at my school and was thoroughly pleased with the concepts. My father is also an engineer, and would like me to dive deeper into these sorts of things. Being a long time Instructables  user I came here to seek guidance. Most of the Instructables of recent times have used Arduino and/or Raspberry Pi. I would like to learn more about these tools and what they are used for. Which one do you think is better, easier to use, and/or faster to learn.

Sciences PI Plate

Hi every ones, I'm a young engenner in plant biotechnology. On my free time i try to create an open source plate for the Raspberry pi which has lots of functionality very usefull for science project (Plant growing, Invitro cell, hydroponic control, compotemental study...) I'm really a beginer in electronics, but i read a lot electronic book, looking schematic and see video. This plate have : -8x relay 220V 5A control by a Darlington Array -8x Analog input -4x BNC connector connect to 4 Atlas Scientific Stamp (Ph, EC, DO...) -RTC clock (to be sure of time when data are store on database) -LCD screen 16x2 to facilite the reading without computer -This project will come with backend/frontend distribution Before i order all parts and PCB, i wondering if you be able to check my schematic to validate it and maybe improve it  :P Schematic Image files (2Mo) Fritzing file FZZ I have few question too  : 1/ Can i connect all my ICs and LCD to my external power supply, i read on internet this is better than connect on the 5V from the Raspberry PI? 2/ If i connect all 5V on my external supply how many amps i have to provide (the sum of all amps require by parts)? 3/ Do you know an I2C IC can replace the 74HC4052 to make all the plate in I2C and made it usable by more than a Raspberry PI ? (if it interesting) 4/ Which width is recommand for the wire on my pcb 24 mil (or smaller), and for the 220V Relay the biggest ?? Thanks you for your help, and your website ! Regards Erwan

Raspberry PI power?

Hey yall! I just recently bought a Raspberry Pi! Those of you who want to order know how hard this is, so Im pretty excited because i didnt think Id b able to order for awhile. Anywho, I wnat to make or buy a portable power supply for it, but I am not sure how to go about doing that. I know there are tons of portable CHARGERS out there for iphones and what not, but I am afriad these will attempt to "charge" my PI, therfore frying the board. Do they just supply power and the device recognizes power being recieved, so it displays charging? And I will be attachin a BUNCH of things via a usb hub to the Pi, so I doubt regular bunch of 4 rechargeable AAs will pwer my device for long with all thse extrra things drawing power. So my question is 3fold: can I buy one of those portable chargers to power my Pi or will it fry it? will 4 AAs be enough to power the Pi and all the extra usb things? and will it be more cost efficient to make a power supply? (I definetely want it be rechargeable, though). Any links to products, or guides to make one would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance!!! Also, I already have a wall supply, but I need a power supply that is portable.

Raspberry pi and MHL

Can you control a raspberry pi through MHL. My aftermarket radio supports MHL to control android phones and display the screen as well all from the USB and the cable. So, I was wondering if the raspberry pi could be controlled the same way. I've though of installing a USB touch screen overlay on top of the radio to control the raspberry pi that way and provide video with rca converters or just the rca 3.5 jack on the raspberry pi. Any clues or advice?

Raspberry pi. Oops. Answered

I just got my brand new raspberry pi model b in the mail yesterday. Today I was booting it and plugging it in and I slipped and broke the little silver thing (right next to the power plug) clean off. I haven't checked to see what it is yet but now my pi won't boot. What should I do? Could I solder it back on? ( I can solder pretty well) or should I do something else? Please help.  Thanks, Bud

Raspberry pi program

I am complete beginner. I am trying to write a program for the Pi b+ that will let me count pulses (~2 or 3 a day) and display the result in an accumulating counter. Could anybody point me in the right direction please? Also does anybody know how to transfer a program written on paper using 2-7-3 to the latest Raspian? Thanks in anticipation, Alan

arduino or rasberry pi ? Answered

Forgive me,i am new to arduino and rasberry  pi. I am deeply interested in building CNC's,3D Printers,Quad Copter's..... So a little research showed that we need arduino which would act like the control unit for this very purpose . But i have also come across some people who use parallel ports to control the machine (the processing is done on a computer) ""PS:- I might be wrong"". So if the parallel ports can indeed be used for all these without a arduino in between  ,wouldn't it  be better to get a "rasberry pi"  and  "USB to parallel port converter "    The advantages i am seeing are: less cost more processing power probably easily programmable Cons: we can get a lot of modules like (wireless......) which is made especially for an arduino

pi coders wanted

Looking for a few coders to help make a better 3d system based on the pi and arduino. apps available will incclude: 3d printing tool usage CNC 3d scanning and more to come I have next to NO experience in coding but have designed and tested 2 machines that I need programmers for. these will be opensource at the end and also sellable. I am hoping to make a store similiar to playstore or app store so that advanced programmers can also make a small amount for exceptional products. the idea is huge but could be beneficial to several thousand people including users of this forum in helping them with techniques and skills they have not yet mastered. the project is HUGE and the mechanical side is largely done with the exception of a few parts that are added extra. other inclusions will be safety features and high perfomance. for those that are interested in this AND have coding experience I look forward to your replies on this topic

Controling leds with an Raspberry Pi 3B+ and a RAK2245 Pi HAT

Hi. I have an project and would need som help wit finding a way to control some leds.It will be 2 leds, one green and one red. and i am planing on using a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with an RAK2245 Pi HAT Board for some wireless communication. The leds will have 4 statespassiv- The green is pulsing Stand by- if switch a is flipped, both leds are activated. It is also awaiting and wireless signal. to chang state charging- When it revives the signal "start charging" and the switch is activated, the green led is activated fully. Problem- if the system revives the signal "problem" only the red led is activated, regardless of other signals. The signals "start charging" and "problem" are going to, in best case, be controlled by an user with an app.So my questions are...1: would my plan work. 2: How would i do the weiring3: Could make the program by just an simpel if-else4: What would i need to change if i whant two seperat led setupps. to be controlld by the same Raspberry Pi

temperature logging with raspberry pi

New here, and to Pi/Python looking to log data from a few different sensors from Atlas Scientific (RTD & PH).  I've gotten really stuck so fare in getting these going and was wondering if anyone here can help me out.  so far I've used this code:  import smbus import time import datetime #SMBus(0) - Raspberry Pi Model A #SMBus(1) - Raspberry Pi Model B bus = smbus.SMBus(1) #I2C address of sensor address = 0x66 def temperature():     rvalue0 = bus.read_word_data(address,0)     rvalue1 = (rvalue0 & 0xff00) >> 8     rvalue2 = rvalue0 & 0x00ff     rvalue = (((rvalue2 * 256) + rvalue1) >> 4 ) *.0625     #print rvalue1, rvalue2     return rvalue print("Temperature Data Logger\n") while True:         #Open Log File     f=open('tempdata.txt','a')     now = datetime.datetime.now()     timestamp = now.strftime("%Y/%m/%d %H:%M")     outvalue = temperature()     outstring = str(timestamp)+"  "+str(outvalue)+" C "+str(outvalue*1.8+32)+" F"+"\n"     print outstring     f.write(outstring)     f.close()     #log temperature every 10 seconds     time.sleep(10) I've got the two sensor boards connected to the raspberry pi 3 mounted via a Whitebox Tentacle T3.   The boards are in i2c mode and i can see them using sudo i2cdetect -y 1 (they show up address 63 and 66)  but when i run this program above I just get a red error light when it reads the temperature.   The log file reports a measurement of 2C and 35.2F which is not correct but the red light on the board tells me that the Pi is trying to connect with it.   Anyone able to help?

LVDS board with raspberry pi

Hi there, I recenlty purchased a M.NT68676.2A LVDS board and connected up to my raspberry pi. All of this is working fine however the setup at the moment looks like frankensteins attempt at a pc, so i was wondering what is the best way to go about building a box to contain my setup, bearing in mind i have no CAd or the like expereince and no access to a 3d printer (no small ask i know) I want the box to be able to support a 15" laptop screen and have the ports accessible on the outside. Look forward to some ideas. Thanks
