Gelli plate substitute

Hi. there is a new craze sweeping the craft and art community with a mono printing plate called a gelli plate. It's made out of some sort of mineral oil or gel of some sort. (i think). It's a flexible, clear mat with a soft feel and a give to it, a bit like jello. There are plenty of homemade versions using gelatin. which works fine for a while but it soon breaks up or bacteria sets in as gelatin is a food substance. Are there any clever boffin types out there that can make a similiar product that doesn't use gelatin and that has a good shelf life. I first thought of Oogoo but it's not pliable enough. This Gelli plate reminds me of the soft silcone gel that is used for scar healing, but is so expensive for small sheets. here is the link to see what I am after.

Sciences PI Plate

Hi every ones, I'm a young engenner in plant biotechnology. On my free time i try to create an open source plate for the Raspberry pi which has lots of functionality very usefull for science project (Plant growing, Invitro cell, hydroponic control, compotemental study...) I'm really a beginer in electronics, but i read a lot electronic book, looking schematic and see video. This plate have : -8x relay 220V 5A control by a Darlington Array -8x Analog input -4x BNC connector connect to 4 Atlas Scientific Stamp (Ph, EC, DO...) -RTC clock (to be sure of time when data are store on database) -LCD screen 16x2 to facilite the reading without computer -This project will come with backend/frontend distribution Before i order all parts and PCB, i wondering if you be able to check my schematic to validate it and maybe improve it  :P Schematic Image files (2Mo) Fritzing file FZZ I have few question too  : 1/ Can i connect all my ICs and LCD to my external power supply, i read on internet this is better than connect on the 5V from the Raspberry PI? 2/ If i connect all 5V on my external supply how many amps i have to provide (the sum of all amps require by parts)? 3/ Do you know an I2C IC can replace the 74HC4052 to make all the plate in I2C and made it usable by more than a Raspberry PI ? (if it interesting) 4/ Which width is recommand for the wire on my pcb 24 mil (or smaller), and for the 220V Relay the biggest ?? Thanks you for your help, and your website ! Regards Erwan

Extrusion plate in CAD

I have an idea that requires either machining abilities/tool access or CAD experience. A while ago, I found out something that was apparently common knowledge. Meat grinders with their blades removed can be used to extrude spaghetti. So I decided to look for additional pasta extruder plates for different noodles. There are no pasta extruder plates for standard meat grinders. You can, however, buy a glorified grinder and accessory plates or a dedicated pasta machine for top dollar. The marketted pasta makers at their very cores are the same as the meat grinders with the right plates installed. Obviously pasta dies/plates for meat grinders are intentionally not produced. The closest I could come was a garage sale extruder that looks like a plastic grinder with three dies. Big surprise, it doesnt work. But I modified a plate so it sort of works for a grinder. This worked as proof of concept. Would anyone be interested in helping to design CAD files to print pasta dies on Shapeways based on proper pasta dies? I don't know much about CAD, but it looks easier than the designs created by some folks on here. Basically disks with a dimple for alignment and specially shaped holes. admittedly, the hole depths would be the complicated part. Let me know what you think.

Powering Peltier Plates

Hey guys,So, I just got a Peltier plate, a device that gets very hot on one side while very cold on the other. It requires 90 watts of power. I was just curious what would happen if you powered it by USB or 9v battery. I found this tutorial which uses USB, however, I doubt it gets to its maximum coolness potential. Also, if I used a 9v, would that drain the battery in a matter of minutes, or even damage the plate?Thank you.

Small VERY Hot Plate

I am looking for someone who can design for me to make or make for me a specialized hot plate. I need it to be small like 3" by 2" and to get very hot as much as 700 degrees is desired. I want the power source to be 400watts. I know this seems hard but my reasoning is that the smaller size means higher temps with less wattage. I would use this as a hot plate that evaporates liquid from an airstream as it passes by - a dryer if you like. I would use 2 to cause the air to have to pass both in a zig-zag path. I would like to have a solid surface so eventually I see the plate encased in ceramic but for this it need only be metal. Can you help? Contact me here on the site to discuss more details Coog

Things to do with LCD backlight guide plate and polarisation films?

I received about 15 damaged laptop screens and took them apart to get the CCFLs and inverters which I'll combine into a modest spotlight for video recording. From each laptop I also gained some films and the light guide panel. I believe one of the films from each is just a simple diffuser whilst the other two appear to also be blurry polarisers. Finally, each screen has an acrylic light guide which refracts the light 90° and does so evenly by having some kind of bumps or dots spaced out according to the "diffusion equation" so there are more further away from the source of light (which comes from the side).  Any ideas for what I might use these films and plates? I do have a lamp project for which I can use the diffusion film but the polarising films would probably absorb too much of the light.

Simple CNC question... Answered

This is probably really obvious, but I wanted to know if there is a better way.  I was thinking about how I would go about making a simple "mounting plate".  Then I realized that wouldn't I first have to cut it to size and then mill out the holes.  But then the since I had to cut out the plate it kind of takes the point out of the cnc, because I wouldn't be very accurate for the outside dimensions.  So is there a way to machine the outside, even though it would be in the cnc's vice? Thanks in Advance! AI

Homemade SAPI Plates anyone? Answered

So i just bought a bunch of new tac gear, but mainly a new plate carrier and a bunch of pouches. and while i was out there runin around out there feelin legit, i noticed that with all my gear, the vest kinda flops around without any plates. so im too lazy and cheap to buy a $30 useless hunk of square plastic that no one is ever going to notice, and i wondered, why not homebrew it? so if ANYONE has an instructable or knows how to make fake SAPI "ballistic plates" PLEASE reply...PLEASE          UPDATE- some people seemed to get the impression that im using this for real steel purposes. i can see why they would think that, since i was a bit vague on that part of the question. HELL NO. i will be using this for AIRSOFT. those are 6mm plastic bbs flying at speeds of 350 feet per second maximum. so just about anything works. and im wearing eye protection. so no one is shooting their eyes out either.

quick release tripod plates

So for a few years now i've been using a small speaker setup strapped onto the tail of a longboard skateboard to provide music at skate meets and fun bike rides etc, and it's worked well enough, however at 13kg on the highest point of the board it has a tendancy to flop into corners and mess with the handling. Recently the amplifier broke so i want to use this opportunity to redesign the whole setup... for a start im hoping to reduce the weight by about 5kg i found this video ( on youtube of a skateboard sidecar for a child which i intend to modify for the speakers but i don't want it permanently attached to my board, would 1 or 2 quick release tripod plates have the strength to keep the mechanism attached to the board until i wished to remove it? i know you can get plates to support some particularly heavy cameras so would there be one that would be up to my task?

Electoplating wood. CHEMISTRY QUESTIONS!

Hello guys, Thanks alot for reading. I don't know much about chemistry outside of my one high school class. We electroplated a penny. I have a 1.5ish square-foot piece of wood, and i am wanting to CHROME IT.... chrome paint kits cost hundreds of dollars, and i've before seen chrome-plated wood.. and i want to replicate the results. [img][/img]I'm looking for a cost effective alternative to expensive chrome kits (+300 dollars for a pint)In theory.... my method would involve somehow plating the guitar with some sort of metallic based paint, then submerging it in a chrome bath. IS THIS POSSIBLE??Is there a metal chemical that can somehow be applied evenly to the entire surface of the wood? (i.e. paint?)What, and how much of the specific chemicals do i need, and where can i find them?I really want this to be mirrored. Thanks so much for your responses to my problem:P

I'm trying to make a Breast Plate

Hey, I'm going to build a piece of FANTASY chest armor. I'm not going for realism or authenticity. Just making "a pile of spikes" that looks cool in my opinion. I'm thinking of making something to the equivalent of a low neck line tank top out of leather / tight weave canvas, and then covering it in steel plates. I'm thinking of dividing the front suit into groups and bands of plate. So I'm going to have a set of bands from the right and left chest, then another section that joins them down the center. A section for the abdomen, a section for each side, and then similar sections for the back. I'm then going to bolt the shoulders onto their respective chest plates. So I've done a crappy sketch on GIMP, Kinda explaining what I'm going to do for the center line of the chest. I think If I do this right It'll allow a lot of flexibility, might even be able to see my chest expand and contract while breathing which I think would be a cool effect. Is there any reason why this wont work? But are there any key factors that I need to take into account when doing this? Parts that need to be more flexible than others?

is it safe to turn a kettle into a hot plate for boiling solutions?

Hello, i recently realised that my kettle, which consists of just a a kettle shaped container with a hotplate down the bottom, quickly reaches tempuratures in excess of 100 degrees celcius, and so i have considerd getting a second hand one or a scrap one at the local dump shop, to use in my chlorate cell, to periodically boil the solution once per hour to destroy the hypochlorite and re-absorb the chlorine gas which would normally be lost. i intend to remove the little hot plate! i also want to use it, along with some kind of speed controller, or lamp ambience controller or whatever they are called (lamp dimmer), to make a variable tampurature hot plate, using a heat dependant autoresetting circuit breaker to ensure the temp doesnt go above what i want it at. what i need to know, is  it safe, not for me, but for the kettle, to operate for short periods of time without turning off? or would the resistance coil burn out? by that i mean 5 -7 minutes, considering its normal run time is at about 1-2 minutes. or can it safely run on indefinately, with the only damages occuring being melting of wires and the base?

How would you imprint a graphic or text onto a blank aluminium or stainless steel blank switch plate cover?

I'm making a pedal board/road case with a buddy of mine. It's in its early stages, but it will consist of a pedal board and lift-away lid, covered in tolex with metal corners and such. I'd like to put some sort of small name plate or logo on the front end of it. I've found a blank switch plate cover, normally used to cover up spots where light switches or power outlets used to be, and by some means apply a logo or text to it. It's about the size that I'd like the logo/text to be anyways. I guess I could go and print a sticker and call it done, but I'm looking for a way to make this more permanent. It will be on the outside of what is essentially a small road case, so it will be up against the elements. So I guess if there was a good way to print off a design and put a layer of something over it so it will stay in place, possibly be shiny ( :D ), and be protected from the elements, I'd be all set! For the sake of aesthetics I've decided whatever plate I get, it will be some kind of metal. I've found brushed aluminium, stainless steel, and chrome.

Thermal conductivity of two welded plates?

I am in the process of building a wood stove (details on FE Blog) mainly from scrap metal, but I have got it into my head that a stainless steel hotplate would be nice. I wanted one 10mm thick, round with a diameter of 390mm. As it turns out 6mm seems to be a bit of a threshold for stainless, and anything over has to be laser cut or similar and is loads more expensive. Like £80 is the cheapest I can find it.  Anyway, one solution would be to buy two 5mm thick plates and weld round the circumference - that seems like it would work out quite a lot cheaper. The question is how would the thermal conductivity be affected by the tiny gaps which would inevitably remain in the centre (the two plates will never be completely flat)? Is there some kind of thermal paste that could mitigate this, which is very heat resistant? If so how would it deal with being superheated by the welding, and would it contaminate the weld? And lastly - this got me to thinking about copper bottomed pans - how do they bond the copper to the stainless steel (google is failing me- or I am failing google with poor search terms)?? So 3 sort of related questions: 1.Welded plate- big conductivity problem or naught to worry bout? 2.Super high temp. thermal past  - would it help? 3.How are pans copper bottomed anyway?? Thanks, Bongo

Best way to laminate plate glass? Answered

Was wondering what people thought might be the best way to laminate plate glass strips together to make a block-o-glass.  I will be sanding the edges with a angle grinder fitted with a flap disc, so a flexible glue would not be great.  Yes I know probably a belt sander would give me a flatter edge, but I am wanting a mottled sort of look.  Anyway, silicon is out, as it is not good for sanding  Epoxy might be the way, but I find it gets gummy under high heat friction sanding.  Gorilla glue maybe or is there some magic yet cost effective glue out there.  It will be a block about 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet with a thickness of about 3 inches.  It will held in a frame with continuous supports around the bottom and sides with the top 1 inch exposed, so it will not have to hold its own weight.  Double sided tape could conceivably  be used, but I am trying to make it somewhat water resistant.  It doesn't have to be clear, but it does have to allow some light transmission.  Enough caveats on it?

Beginner Jewellery maker. Question about gold/silver plating

Hi there, I'm starting jewellery making as a complete beginner and want to use Metal Clays to do this as it seems one of the easier and cheaper ways to make jewellery at home. I looked into lost wax casting, but there are no studios or workshops near where I live to do this. I really love gold jewellery, and was wondering that if I used bronze, copper, or silver clay, am I able to plate it too? I've seen those electroplating kits online, but I was wondering if it would work after I've finished making my jewellery piece with the clay.  I've also seen videos about 'silver accenting' copper clay... Is this just basically like coloured base metal (costume jewellery), or is it real sterling silver (i.e high end costume jewellery). Any insight anyone can provide is very much appreciated! :) Erika
