Selection of presence sensor

Hi guys. For one of my university projects I need to detect the presence of a person in the shower. In order to do that what I have in mind is use a proximity sensor. If the target is in a distance range (let's say 20 to 50 cm) It will assume that the person is in the shower when the distance measure is no longer in this range then it will mean that the person left the shower. I need to detect all the time of the person in the shower (meaning when he/she gets in and then out). I have read a lot of info and forums to properly choose the type of sensor. However I still don't have a clear answer. About the Ultrasonic proximity sensors I know that they are cheap and more accurate by it can be affected by Temperature, humidity and some ambient noise, all of them which happen in a shower. The other option an Infrared one gets affected by lightning conditions and the surface of the target. The last option I checked is a PIR sensor I know it senses Temperature of the target, but I don't know if it will be affected by the running hot water and also is more expensive. In general, I don't know how the running hot water will affect the detection of the person in shower. Also,so again I don't know how this will work. Sorry for the huge amount of  questions, I am a little bit confuse with all the factors to have in mind. I am hoping someone out there can help a lost newbie like me and give me a suggestion. Thanks a lot :)

Mobile Virtual Presence Device? Answered

Right, so in "The Big Bang Theory" there is an episode where Sheldon makes an rc stand with a monitor on, and it has live footage of his face on it.  There are ways to do this, but they all seem to point to using an rc car with a 10 metre range and 30 minutes battery.  The flaw with this, is that if you want to be at work using one, or at someone's house with it, then you're gonna need a lot more than 10 metres!  How can you make it so that you can control it anywhere, either using wifi or just connecting somehow?  (I'm sorry, I'm really bad at electronics, so excuse my poor understanding.)  As an example, you don't need wifi to text someone, so do you need it to control an rc vehicle?  Ideally, I'd like to make one at about £300-£400, and as like the one from the big bang theory as possible, so not just a tiny stand that people have to keep charging and you have to crane your neck to see.  I'd be happy to use a £60 tablet with skype for the video, but what I'm mainly concerned about is how to control the rc stand/vehicle from a distance away. Thanks a lot! -Finzaz

In other words, is the Picaxe microcontroller (any size) capable of recognizing a change from low to high (pressing a switch for instance) and acting on that change itself, not just the presence of a high?  Or is there at least a way of emulating this type of response in the code? Thanks!

How can I make a biodegradable adhesive in a paintball-like form-factor that's durable but would break if thrown.

Scenario: you're riding your bike. A car cuts you off. You have a little hopper full of these balls and have the presence of mind to get one out and throw it at the car. It sticks to the car. When the driver gets home, he sees it. Inside of the clear adhesive is a laminated piece of paper or something durable with a link written on it. The driver goes to the website and reads instructions about how to be a better bike-friendly driver. They wash the adhesive off with no damage done to the car. They become more conscientious drivers.

I'm on a time crunch for a project, and I want to have distance sensing.  Unfortunatealy, i dont have enough time to get stuff shipped, nor the budget to use radioshack.  I was wondering if I can use a single pieze transducer without premade circuitry, and control it from an arduino.  I have some transistors, some common ICs (386, 555, etc), and basic passive components, plus two arduino UNOs (one with a broken FTDI adapter) can it be done? I don't need an  exact, continuous, or scaling measurment, just one that gives me an idea of the distance/presence of an object.

Hi,All I am experiencing a headache now.I connected arduino UNO and a serial relay board, then i uploaded my sketch to it,the problem is once i plug it into laptop.the project works, but once i use a external power,say,12V 1A,or 5v 1A.or lipo batteries(5v1A and 12V1A)to power jack of UNO,it won't behaved the way as i expected.I haven't tried 9V 1A. i think the sketch is in the chip,So it should work without the presence of serial signal,i used 'softwareserial.h'library to enable virtual serial of UNO.and made PIN10 and PIN11 as serial PINS.i don't know where the problem lies.

Can somebody help me write a simple arduino program involving a motion sensor?

I have been working on a motion activated version of the mini portal turret from think geek. I am new to arduino, and have no idea where to start when it comes to programming! I have designed the circuit so that the led for the eye and the microcontroller that controls the voice are separate. My goal is to have a PIR detect the presence of a person, the turret to speak a single phrase, and the led to fade in and out. It will then wait 5 seconds, and if motion is detected, repeat the previous cycle. If no motion is detected, the led will fade out and stay off.  If somebody could just get me started in the right direction, I would be very grateful!

Compressing home made biogas

Hi I'm working on a project where we are using an anaerobic digester along with a series of gas scrubbers that yields biogas containing roughly 80% methane (ch4) and 20% oxygen. I know that this proportion of methane is well above the upper explosive limit of methane (about 15% methane by volume) but the presence of that much oxygen makes me nervous.  Am I going to have trouble compressing this gas mixture without blowing a new hole in my head? I am planning on compressing the purified biogas to about 20psi at between 60-80 degrees farenheight and in a respectably blast proof gas container.  please help! (Trying to help our planet!)

Kiteman Recommends: Punk IPA

I just came across a beer (bought in Tesco) from a brewery that is new to me, but I'm definitely going to keep an eye on.The beer is Punk IPA: Post Modern Classic Pale Ale, from the BrewDog brewery in Fraserburgh, Scotland. A fresh, clean beer, with an ABV of 6%, it's an easy drinker.According to their website, they have a range of beers, mainly ales and stouts, but with one pilsner as well. They are all modern, pure-ingredient takes on classic brews.I'm not a beer expert, but I am a beer snob. Based on this IPA, and the brewers' Maker attitude, I plan on making BrewDog a regular presence in my beer stocks.Even better news for our resident brewers (Lemonie and moaner70 to name two), they have a vacancy - if you have it in you, and can commute to Scotland, They are looking for a new brewer.

What is the best kit for testing my home's water for lead?

Over the weekend, I learned that most lead in drinking water comes from plumbing within the house. from Curaflo's history of piping materials:In 1986, Congress banned the use of lead solder containing greater than 0.2% lead, and restricted the lead content of faucets, pipes and other plumbing materials to 8.0%.This so-called "lead-free" brass can still legally contain up to 8% lead, and plumbing systems installed prior to 1986 can contain high levels of lead from both plumbing components and lead solder. The presence of lead in water from the tap is indicative of serious pipe corrosion that must be corrected for health reasons. So, I plan to test my home's water for lead content. Have you seen a comparison of the various home testing kits? Which one is the best?

Make a magnetic field detector ?

I dearly want to make a device to measure electromagnetic fields in the house ,since the presence of such has been more than obvious and at times annoying . My CRT monitors behave strange in my room . The geometry of one bends as i turn the monitor in one direction and at the same direction ,my spare one changes color to blueish like pale . Interestingly, they do it in the same direction no mater where i put them in the room . My turntable's (i am in to Hi-Fi gear ) cartridge reacts when i put it in some places in the room and i hear noise come out of the speakers until i reposition the turntable . Anyone have any ideas how i can locate the source ? Some simple device ,or schematic that will give me the ability to measure ,or at least detect to some degree the fields responsible ? Will be thankful for any answer .

What sensor is best to use to measure smoke density via Arduino?

I have built a cold-smoker for smoking things like bacon, cheese and seafood. Smoke is produced by burning oak chips in an old fire extinguisher and (using the air supply from a compressor) blown into an old fridge in which the food hangs or is placed on racks. Excess smoke exhausts through a second pipe at the top of the fridge. I log temperatures inside the fridge using an arduino. For the best results the smoke density needs to be low but steady over a period of several hours. I currently control this by hand using a valve on the feed from the compressor. I'm working on controlling this valve automatically using a stepper motor to adjust the increase and decrease the airflow to maintain the correct smoke density. How can I sense the density of the smoke reliably? I need to sense levels of density rather than just its presence. The smoke carries tars so the sensor must be easily cleanable. Any suggestions very welcome!

MRE Heaters

When I was younger, we played with the heating packets from MRE's (Meals, Ready to Eat - Military field meals). My favorite thing to do was to put a pouch inside a plastic container (with a screw-on lid), add water, tighten the top, and wait for the large boom. Here's my question: The heaters release moderate amounts of hydrogen gas once water is added. Of course, with an enclosed container, it will quickly reach pressures adequate to blow a bottle apart (wear eye-wear). But once I joined the military we would add a flame source, so we could see just how large the blast was. I wasn't so sure that flame would actually add anything to the gas explosion. They were sure of it. Is anyone aware if: The presence of flammable gas (exploding from a plastic bottle) with an external ignition source would increase the blast? Or maybe just add another factor to it? I'm sure somebody knows. Every once in a while, though I've been out of the military for about 4 years now, I still find it surfacing from my friends. Just curious.

idea for a simple and thin contact based sensor

Hello instructacles, I'm trying to build a simple contact-based set of sensors embedded in card board, paper or thin plastic sheets. I want to make a simple game for my kids that could detect/react to the presence/absence of some random items positionned on such a board? (empty glass bottle of coke, cereal box, shampoo bootle, you name it) Ideally i would use something like those books for kids where they have metallic threads "printed" on think plastic sheets and when you press them, it triggers a music. But i dont know how to print metal basically. don't really know how to get started. I was thinking of sewing conductive thread but i'm not really sure it would work. I have seen many attempts with aluminium foil (ex: https://www.instructables.com/id/Interactive-Art-With-Scratch-and-Makey-Makey/) but those are based on the fact that a human finger touches them (basically it uses the conductivity of skin), whereas in my game i was to use the weight of random objects from the house (in the 50g to 500g range typically) Any idea how i should get started ? thanks fourchu

12v device to switch on a 9v device (signal to switch on only)

I have a device that is switched on by a sensor, powered by 12v, 1.3amp battery. I have another device that is switched on by a mechanical push button switch, this is powered by a 9v battery. I want to piggy back on the wires that switch on the 12v device and take the signal (to turn on only) to the device that is already powered by a 9v battery and normally turned on by a push button switch. ( I want to replace this mechanical push button switch with an "electronic switch" turned on and off the the presence and absence of the 12v signal) I want the 9v device to switch on only when the 12v device switches on and switch off when the 12v device switches off. Also I want the 9v device to only run on the original 9v battery (not accepting power from the 12v device and not returning any power from the 9v device to the 12v device. Is there a switch device/relay that can do this? A device that I can just connect between the wires going from the 12v device to the 9v device? I am a novice to electronics please be kind. I an open to using part from another device, and basic mods. Thank you

The stub for the Make article on the subject doesn't include the full text, but it does include a number of great links:The Energy Self-Sufficiency Newsletter - This article is partly based on a series of articles by Maria "Mark" Alovert that first appeared here.Gly-Tek - To test for the presence of glycerin, you can use the Gly-Teck test kit, which detects leaked anti-freeze in motor oil. Recycling Sciences - High-volume operations can buy a $31,000 glycerin-purification distiller here, which will convert dirty biodiesel glycerin into nice, clear, commercially valuable glycerin.
