Prevent rust on a PCB? Answered

How do I prevent rust?  Or should I just not worry about the rust?  I am using single sided board etched with ferric chloride, if that matters. Also I need the copper to conduct "on the top", like if I put a multimeter on a trace it would still conduct.  So I can't use something like a clear coat spray paint. AI

Phase Cancellation to Prevent Feedback

The Grateful Dead's wall of sound prevented feed back by having two mics for each vocalist with one of the mics 180° out of phase of the other. Then mixing both mics on the same channel. So the only information that wasn't canceled was the voice.  This gave me an idea. I took a handset and added a mic facing backward from the existing mic. Then wired the second mic out of phase. Apparently there's more to it electrically then just wiring the other mic backwards because the handset went dead. Is this possible with just parts salvaged from old phone equipment?

How to prevent transistor saturation?

I am trying to create my own audio amplifier. My problem was when i have large signal amplification the transistors becomes saturated, as a result the resulting signal is already clipped. This problem usually occurs when i use a transistor at CE configuration. Using CC configuration prevents this saturation problem but it also makes amplification very hard. When i use CC configuration one of the two transistors becomes "useless" because collector current becomes very low and based on further analysis it seems like only the last transistor is doing the job.

Personal electronics theft prevention

My daughter is going into high school and has had her scientific calculator stolen for three years in a row at school. These are pricey, running from $30-$40 each. Besides that, all the other things in her pencil bag, like compasses, triangles, pens, mechanical pencils. Frankly, I'm sick of my daughter not being prepared for class and spending money for the reprobates to just steal it.  Is there any way to tag her calculator economically to track it down?

Preventing Kicked-in Bike Wheels?

After purchasing the toughest bike lock I could find, I got the wheels kicked in by a frustrated would-be thief who could only get through the plastic coating with whatever tool he was using. (he incidentally got all of the other bikes locked up outside my dorm.) The closest lockers are a 30 min walk away, and they only allow for a small, easily cut padlock. I have an uncharacteristically small dorm room, so racking it in my room isn't really plausible. Any ideas? Maybe a couple of spokes reinforced with steel bar, or a cheap homemade bike shed?

preventing buildup of glutinous substance on duct walls?

During a manufacturing process, hot air flows through a duct carrying fine particles of a glutinous substance. With time, those particles stick to the walls of the duct and create a thick layer on them. This layer reduces the cross-section area of the duct, changing the velocity of the flow. To remove this layer, the flow has to be stopped. Any ideas of how to remove the layer without having to stop the flow? Or to prevent the buildup of the layer?

Prevent Clipping and Hum in class d amplifier

Hey I got this amp. Now at large volumes, there seems to be clipping. Even though the amp is 20w, my speaker is rated for 25w.  How can I prevent it from happening, rather than never playing at high vol. Can it be done by AGC or Dynamic Range Compression or Noise Gate. In my case, which is a ready made pcb, how can I include such circuitry. Is it even possible. Also, while selecting an IC, what needs to be looked at that will suggest clipping would not happen, or which parts needs to be referenced from the datasheet which ensures preventing clipping. At large volumes, if I disconnect the mp3 player from the amp but keep the jack plugged into the amp, a high hum is heard. When removed, hum is lowered but not eliminated. Similarly, when track changes. What steps needs to be taken to eliminate them. All the time before actually getting into practical electronics, I was only looking at Power output, THD+N, Class, etc of amplifier. It is only after going hands-on, for the first time, that I can experience the real things which most matter. Appreciate for helping me become a pro. Thanks.

How can you prevent Galvanic Corrosion? Answered

My parents bought a new green heater they've had repaired by 2 different guys in the past 2 months. The last one was a guy my brother knew; he said that it needed to be sanded, which I thought was a bit strange. It's beginning to act a bit funny again, kicking on, then going off. So I opened it up today, thinking that it was probably Galvanic corrosion from the way he talked. It seems as if a few companies are getting a bit careless in there designs. :-) So I opened it up and there was still corrosion laying on the bottom of the case from the first fix. He didn't even know what I was talking about. I read the Wikipedia article: Galvanic Corrosion. They mostly advise electroplating, which could get a bit labor intensive in this case. From what I understand, the idea is to separate the base metals, the anode and the cathode, from the electrolyte. In this case, it's the water vapor in the air. Wouldn't it just require some type of heat resistant coating to act as a barrier against water? Like some kind of spray on coating?

How to prevent voltage drop on solar phone charger?

Hello folks, I made a solar phone charger - cell (12V 400mA - at peak 5W)  and step down DC/DC converter R-785.0-1.0 (5V up to 1000mA). and I am using it as direct charger for my phone (no batteries). When the sun is bright, everything is fine and phone is being charged almost by 1A. When the dark comes, everything is fine - no charging but also no discharging of the phone to a solar cell. Problem is in the middle, sunlight but not so much. Voltage on cell drops to 6,5 V because converter wants more power and cell cant support that (output is still 5V but almost no Amps). Problem is, that charging circuit in phone is constantly switching on and off(as the load is pluged unpluged) and that can run down fully charged battery within 10 minutes. Is there any solution how to prevent that?- for example some kind of minimum current limiter? Or I saw using 555 timer as a charger controler, but not sure how to use it. Main goal is to prevent that oscilation. Many thanks in advance.

Simple solution to prevent load swinging in overhead crane

Cranes are used to move loads from one location to another in minimum time such that the load reaches its destination without swinging. As we all know, that swinging problem occurs due to flexibility of wires but if the wire is rigid and permanently fixed on one side then ???As per the sketch there will be a telescopic arm and one side of the arm will be attached with the trolley of the crane. This rigid telescopic arm will be connected with the load at the time of lifting the load. In this way there will be no problem of swinging as the rigid telescopic arm will be fixed with the trolley and wires will work to lift the load so there is no chance of swinging of load.My solution can achieve these following points at the time of construction.Improved Safety High-Precision Moves Increased ProductivityEasily Implemented on Existing tech Save time Save energy to reduce carbon Cost as the crane can work at the time of high speed air. My solution is simple, low cost and very effective to prevent load swinging problem.

Can VMWare prevent Supreme Commander from running?

I recently brought a copy of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance from Best Buy. I installed it on my tower pc running Vista SP1 without any problems and played for a while. I decided to install it on my laptop, which is running XP SP3. When I attempt to run the game it tells me to disable any emulation software or virtual disks. I've uninstalled every piece of emulation software I have, along with any virtual drives. It still brings up the same error message. The only thing left is VMWare, version 6.5.0 build 118.166, which I can't uninstall due to time constrains when I need to reinstall it later. The tower PC also has VMWare installed, version 6.0.4 93057 (I haven't gotten around to updating it yet). Could the newer VMWare be the problem? If it is, could someone give me an email for their tech support or tell me a way to unlock the game somehow?

Is there a way to prevent blowing a home fuse with another fuse? Answered

This is probably the dumbest question I've asked, and I know that me asking it and why I'm asking it is going to scare so many decent people. But I can ensure you that I'm taking appropriate safety measures when I do these kind of things. My questions is: I can either buy or easily build some sort of portable breaker box? I would like this box to be a sort of "test platform" of sorts, so I can make things that will plug into a 110 outlet (say a hotwire cutter) and if (for some reason) I do have a short somewhere, I will trip the test platform breaker, and not the fuse in my apartment.  Reason I ask is I work graves, and it hard for me to meet up with my landlord. meaning, if I blow a fuse (which my apartment still uses) I will have to go 10+ hours on average before I can get it replaced. Thanks in advance!

How can I prevent aluminum jewelry from oxidizing?

In my instructable about making an aluminum ring, I made two aluminum rings, one for my girlfriend and one for myself. Mine is still fine; however, hers keeps turning black (oxidizing). I understand this is because she is a girl and her skin pH is different than mine (more basic); but I am curious if there are any techniques on how to prevent this from happening. The ring needs to be polished using aluminum cleaner every other week, but if there was a way to keep its mirror finish, that would be fantastic. Thank you!

Hacking an audio greetings card - to prevent erasure of audio-clip

I bought an audio greetings card as I wanted the recording device to put in a craft project. I've recorded the 20 second audio clip and I want to prevent accidental erasure of said audio clip. I have 2 short questions... Which wire or wires do I cut in order to disable the record button?? Can I chop the (now redundant) mic out completely (as I'm trying to reduce the thickness of the sound module as much as poss) without affecting the sound clip, will it still play if the mic is no longer in the circuit? I've included a photo showing the record and mic buttons, and the wires going to and from them. Many thanks for any advice offered :o)

What is a good way to strengthen (prevent rips) craft foam?

I spend a lot of time making LARP/Prop weapons and I have a particular sword that has a very weak guard (That's this https://www.instructables.com/id/Ninjato-30-Alt-Z/). I end up fixing it after every rehearsal, because the foam rips (See the pictures and you'll know exactly how that happens). I'm looking for some sort of spray or paint-on substance/concoction that I can use to make this guard stronger. I use foam because it's a bendy substance, so something that will harden and then crack if it is bent is not an option. I want to make the foam tougher, but not stiff or brittle. Anyone have any ideas?

How to drop an egg from a window and prevent it from crashing

Hello everybody I think you might find this exercise fun and at the same time original ideas are needed! Thanks In advance!! I'm studying design and this exercise has become a classic at my school. Since 10 years ago students have tried to reach the objective but also to develop an original and creative solution. The exercise is to develop a kind of device in order to be able to drop an egg from a window in the first floor and land it safely on the ground at a distance that has to be less than 3 cm from it. Plain Parachutes and slides are forbidden as they are too obvious unless they have a distinctive aspect and also you can`t wrap the egg in something soft (like a pillow) and drop it. Important things to take notice are: -The person has to loose all contact with the egg (You can´t hold a fishing rod with an egg on the end of the line and slowly get it down). -It must be a raw chicken egg Thanks!!

What can I do to prevent lightning damage with this device?

I'm planning on building the device specified here:  http://www.eham.net/articles/9272 I want to place it about thirty-forty feet above the ground, between two large trees.  This would be above the power lines in my area, and also above most everything else besides the trees themselves.  This seems to pose a significant risk of having lightning strike it.  I don't want to have to put it up and take it down every time there is a storm (nor am I always here when there is one).  Is there any way to make this safe from a lightning strike?  P.S.  I know this works--one of my friends works for Honeywell and, when asked whether or not this was true, he explained that they have had conferences, lectures, etc. about the problem of static buildup on power lines.  My line length would be around 200-300 feet long, which is certainly not anywhere near the miles that many HV hydroelectric lines in my area run for, but it is still quite long.

California Government tries to prevent reuse; issues ACCRC a violation

Just the other day while I was cleaning out old computers I thought to myself how wonderful it was that the Alameda County Computer Recycling Center was nearby. The ACCRC is a not-for-profit organization that accepts old electronic parts to build working computers that they give away to people in need. Anything they can't use gets properly recycled, and they do this all without charging any fees. The Department of Toxic Substance Control of the California Environmental Protection Agency is causing trouble for the ACCRC, and this may ultimately lead to the ACCRC's demise. In short, the government is using the letter of the law to do totally bone-headed things, and has slapped the ACCRC with a violation. It's our government, and it should work for us to encourage smart ways, like the ACCRC, to lessen our impact on the environment. Even if you don't live in California, this is important because California typically leads the nation on these types of issues. There's a couple of things you can do, including contacting people at the government agency and donating directly to the ACCRC. Check ACCRC's founder James Burgett's blog for details on both. More coverage here at Boingboing.

Tips or products you recommend for clearing or preventing ice in winter?

My partner and I just bought a house and we're doing some repairs and upgrades. One of the major things I want to focus on is making our front entrance less icy. Most of the time we're covered in snow, but whenever it warms up briefly we end up with an icy disaster on the front porch the next morning. :P Currently, the roof melt runs right off onto our front steps and it's a mess! (see picture for the icicle death trap)I have been using a "pet-safe" ice melt (we have two dogs who are in and out all day) but it doesn't do enough for how much I go through. I still break up the ice in the morning when using the ice melt because the ice builds up really quickly. Are there gutters strong enough to handle heavy snowfall? Some sort of heating element I could install? For reference, I'm in northern CO in the mountains and we tend to get feet of snowfall every winter! I've never lived somewhere with this much snow, but I'm hoping some of you do and can offer some suggestions :D

How to Remove the "Security Suite" Virus and other Preventive Measures

Well, I just recovered from the "Security Suite" Virus. It's a trojan-style virus that infects your computer, claims that everything is infected, and leads you to a legitimate-looking website. It doesn't allow any programs to run except itself and won't allow you to access any websites except it's fraudulent own. I feel incredibly lucky that whoever designed this virus sucks, and it's comparatively easy to get rid of. Here's what I did. First, if your computer is infected, turn it off and on again. Then when you're booting it up , hit F8 repeataly, so you enter a boot menu. From there, select "Enter Safe Mode with Networking". It will look all Windows 95-ey, but that's what it's supposed to do. From there, open Internet Explorer (I know, but we all have to make sacrifices for the cause...) and go to the Tools menu. From there, go to the bottom and hit "Internet Options...". Then, go to the connections tab, "LAN Settings" and uncheck the proxy server box. Then, you'll want to install CCleaner to get rid of the virus. Installation is simple, and then select "Run Cleaner" in-program. You'll also want to install RKill, to get rid of the other spyware associated with the virus. After that, install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, to add another layer of protection.  Another method to do all of this with is burning CCleaner onto a CD with another computer and running it from there, but the internet worked fine for me. Another great product (These are all free) is ZoneAlarm firewall. It's a pretty good firewall, and asks you wether to allow or deny each item, which I wish I had installed, so I could've avoided this entirely. If you have ZoneAlarm, a heads up, the program that you shouldn't allow internet access (causes the virus) is completely random letters starting with an "r". And right now, I'm thinking, why isn't this an instructable? Lack of original pictures mostly. Thanks for reading, I hope I helped someone(s)!
