Can you insulate the primary coil of a Tesla coil?

Hello,    I am trying to build a tesla coil using a new design relating to a thesis paper I am working on. Due to spacial restraints my primary coil will be close to the secondary coil. I know I have seen others use insulated braided copper wire as their primary. I want to stay with 1/4" copper tubing if at all possible so I wanted to ask what affects it would have if I used heat shrink tubing on the copper tubing. I am aware the higher frequency voltage runs along the skin of the tubing since that is least resistive at that point. A for the power and caps I am using the following: three NSTs of which two are 15kv @ 30 miliamps and one 12kv @ 30 miliamps, 13 CD 2000VDC @ .15nf caps on each 15kv NST and 10 of the same caps on the 12kv NST. The spark gap is static for now.  I want to prevent arching as much as possible in the small space. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Some of the information relating to the thesis paper I cannot release due to a serious concern of being scooped before publication.  Thank you. :)

Pancake Coil

Hello, I was going to try building an old Tesla "Pancake" Coil, and then write an instructable for it. (please don't steal my idea!) Does anyone have any information or building techniques at all that they can give me to help? The Pancake coil is just a Tesla Coil that has a flat secondary, as well as a flat primary. Tesla used it in his early radio and wireless power transmission research. The primary circuit should be pretty much the same as a conventional Tesla Coil. But I am a bit confused as to how to build the secondary. A few questions I have: What wire gauge should I use (I'm pretty sure that Tesla didn't use magnet wire for this)? How do I determine the space in between the turns? (more to come) I realize that most people don't build these kinds of coils anymore, and therefore most people probably won't be able to answer my questions or give me any info; I'd just thought that I would try and see if any one could. It would help me a lot. Thank you.

How do I determine how to best couple the primary coil of a Tesla Coil to the secondary coil?

I need to know what the best dimensions for the primary coil would be for this secondary: 505 mm length 0.72 mm wire thickness (21 gauge magnet wire) and 60.325 mm diameter I would appreciate some sort of formula where i can just substitute the primary voltage and get a measurement but if that is not possible use 27 volts for the primary voltage. If you have suggestions as to other aspects of the coil i could improve, i would be happy to listen. It is a solid state coil and i will probably put a capacitor in series with the primary to make it doubly resonant.

Its a multi strand wire, not the solid type.

First Tesla Coil Answered

I purchased a small tesla coil kit online.  The kit is working but I need help improving it. Instead of having the typical primary and secondary windings with a toroid on top it has the driver circuit pulse a 50k transformer producing a 1 inch spark.  I'm wondering can the output of the transformer be connect to a typical primary windings and secondary windings with a toroid on top? I have a link below to the schematic. Also if this works would you recommend 1000 or 2000 turns on the secondary and how many on the primary?  30 or 36 gauge for the secondary? transformer help needed

Hi guys, i'm a newbie on here so i would like to take this opportunity to say hello :) i have a salvaged transformer that i'm working on at the mo. It is the primary that is blown, but the secondary is fine. I am in the uk, so it is designed to run on 240. Because i am looking to produce high amps, one solution would be to use the secondary as a primary, otherwise i am looking at doing a full rewind. i'm kinda new to transformers, but have enough knowledge for the job in hand. my question is how many turns does the primary need to have? i know that you cant give me an exact figure without the dimensions of the transformer in question (700w microwave transformer if that helps) but i seem to remember from school physics that there is an equation to work out the number of turns a primary must have at a given voltage, i have googled for days to no avail, i'm guessing it is out there somewhere, but i cant find it :( and the last question is that if the transformer was to have too few turns on the primary, what would happen when it was plugged in? my guess would be that it would short out the mains and the coil would rupture, possibly tripping the circuit breaker? many thanks to anyone who replies :) and merry xmas to all :)

Resonating my tesla coil? Answered

I have heard a little about resonating a tesla coil and wan't to make sure that it is going to before I spend money for my primary (copper is expensive).  My secondary has about 1400 turns of wire.  I am going to be using a bucket capacitor like The Geek Group on youtube built, and a 60 Hz high voltage transformer.  My primary will hopefully be 1/4 inch, and I wan't to know how many turns I need and if I can do a funnel looking shape like this one Tesla Coil.  One other thing is that my tesla coil is 30 inches tall, so does my primary need to get closer to the top to work.  I think I got all of the primaries and secondaries right, I know which is which, but sometimes I swap the words.  It would be a great help if you answered my question.

Can I use an ignition coil to run the primary coil of my tesla coil? Answered

Alright, I ask that everyone please read everything in this question before answering :).  I hopefully going to be very thorough.  I am building a tesla coil and am just about to give up and buy a NST.  I have many high voltage sources laying around, but, so far I haven't had much luck.  The first plan was to use a large ballast (florescent light) to drive a flyback, but it was to powerful, so I got a CFL driver, and it didn't work (not the driver so much as the whole project)  so now I am left with an ignition coil.  I know that I can use a light dimmer switch to power it, but it will still be 60hz I think and I here that is not safe for a tesla coil.  Although, I don't think anyone is going to let high frequency and voltage arc across their skin anyway.  So will something at this low of a frequency still work to power a tesla coil.  If not do you have any ideas I can use.  I have a flyback transformer and an ignition coil so any ideas that come to mind please share.

Tesla coil music?

So, I have noticed that music can be played with a tesla coil.  I originally thought it could be done just by using a plasma speaker as the input for the primary coil, but now that I have realized this won't work because of a spark gap and capacitors I am stumped.  Will using an inductor (i think that is right) which allows current to pass sixty times in one second yield a 60Hz pitch?

Does it matter how a coil is wound? Answered

Hi everyone, Take a look at the illustration attached.  Is there any real difference in values between the four winding types? *** Assuming same core, same wire gauge and same number of windings on all 4 primaries, and all 4 secondaries *** A) Both primary and secondary are wound TOGETHER. B) primary is wound first, then secondary wound ON TOP. C) Primary and secondary are wound at OPPOSITE SIDES of the core . D) Primary and secondary are wound next to each other on the SAME SIDE of the core. Note that figure in D it seems like the wires are thinner, but I assure you, that's an optical illusion, and the gauge is the same in all 4 figures :-p Again, the question is whether the 4 coils would act the same in a circuit, or is there a difference in values between them? 120V MOT transformer on 220V for spot welding machine? Answered

Hello i'm making a Spot welding Machine using a microwave transformer i'm removing the secondery coil to replace with 2 rounds of very thick wire for the output . the only problem is the transformer rated for 120V input Will it matter if i connect the primary to 220v ? i'm replacing the secondery anyway ?

Question about winding coils.? Answered

So i need to wind some coils, and i suddenly though about it, and now i need to know if im on the right track. When winding coils, will winding the second layer, back over the first layer, in the same direction (for example clock wise) cancel out the coil? also, i bought a galvaniced threaded rod, thinking it would work as a core. it would work right? What if i had a 8 turn primary. Should it be under the secondary coil. Or could i wind the secondary to the side of the primary? thanks :)

Why do primary coils differ in shape and location between different Tesla Coils? Answered

I've been researching Tesla Coils, and one thing in particular strikes me, no one seems to agree on a shape and placement for the primary coil. I've seen reverse cone, cylinder, perpendicular spiral, and just wrapped haphazard. You can see which coil is primary in the following images, as well as examples of different styles of wrapping for the coils.  I've also seen the primary coil placed at the base of the secondary, as well as in the center of the secondary. I've gathered the following information in my research (I'm pretty sure everything is correct): The primary coils, through induction, transfers the charge to the secondary coils. The primary coils are much thicker to allow for the large amounts of current running through them. For maximum induction, you want the same amount of surface area for primary and secondary coils (I've seen this written in different ways at different places).  (You don't not want Maximum Induction see: steveastrouk's comment below) Primary coils are placed in a way to allow for....... (this is where things start to fall off and the reason for my question). So, if your goal is to have the most charge transfered from one coil to another, why are there so many different styles? Does one style benefit over another? Is there a logical reason one would opt for one one style rather then another? Thank you. Question about a flyback's polarity Answered

Hello, I am confused with this flyback transformer I have. I have a pulsed DC input on the primary coil (pulses from 0 to 15V) and that creates high voltage in the secondary coil. When I connect that input in the opposite direction (wrong polarity) I don't get high voltage any more. The possible explanation for this is that the primary coil has a diode in series with it. Now, I'm confused by this because I tested if there actually Was a diode in there (by connecting a DC supply and a DC motor, in series with the coil) and the motor always works! (also tested with a halogen light) I put the coil in series with the motor to test if there is a diode inside. If there would be one inside, the motor should not work in one of the two cases, when I switch the pins of the primary coil. So, as the results of the test tell me: there is no diode in series with the primary coil. could it be possible that there is a diode in parallel with the primary coil? If that's not possible, how come the flyback is not working when I connect the polarity incorrectly? Could someone please help me out with this? Thanks, Electorials

Multimeter inductance meter? Answered

I am building a Tesla coil with a fairly poor primary coil. The primary coil is a conical 12.5mH (theoretically) but when I measured it with my multimeter the inductance kept jumping and was only doing so within the range of .05mH - 2mH why is this can it not measure conical coils?

So when I look at how capacitors are wired into a tesla coil they are outputting dc.  How does this help performance if the actual cause of electrical discharge is when a change or stop occurs in the primary magnetic feild.

Flyback powered Tesla Coil?

Hi. I am trying to build a Tesla Coil, and there are few thins I'd like to know. First, I built this PWM (made a few modifications, IRF530 MOSFET and 10nF ceramic caps instead) and connected it to a self wound primary of my fuh29A001V flyback, and it works perfectly, sparks and stuff. Can this power my Tesla Coil? Next, if it can work, how do I calculate capacitance needed for my tank capacitor? Miloš

My First Tesla Coil!

I just made my first tesla coil, it stands only about 6 inches tall and has a diameter of ~1". The tank capacitence is ~940 pF. The wire gauge is 30. The topload is 6 inches in diamerer and 1 inch tall. the power supply is a 7.5kv, 60mA NST with a terry filter. It's a static spark gap. The primary has 13 turns of 14 gauge wire, it's a 30 degree cone.It gives out nice arcs and cornea. I will post photos and video soon, as my workshop reeks of ozone right now.I can probably get better preformance with using thicker (or no) aligator clips (prototype stage right now) and if I change the primary. The wire got too hard to turn, so near the center there's like 2" of leeway on all sides of the secondary... sorry about sound quality in the videothe rod in the video is kinda grounded. The rod you see is a thin copper pipe taped to a 3 foot, 1/4 inch thick dowel rod that I'm holding onto.

Need some help with my topload

Hey coilers,                     I have recently completed a tesla coil, but im having some trouble with the topload. I built a toriod of automotive preheat flex duct. It helped to increase the spark length from around 1-1/2 inches to 4-5 inches. The problem is, it is discharging from the secondary coil to the primary, ive tried a couple different things an it does the same thing. If anyone can help or has some useful tips or advice, they would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

I am collecting data in the form of old pics, patents, newpaper and magazine articles as well as just doing things.Tesla coils are fun but is anyone experimenting with the original "multiplying transformer" that Tesla created?And before you say, sure I have a Tesla coil......I mean:Large diameter primary coil with one part of the secondary in very close proximity while the other half of the secondary is located at the center ;)

Tesla coil configuration. Audio amplifier power supply?

If I am to use an audio amplifier as a power supply for a Tesla coil could I do without a spark gap and primary capacitor? I will be operating the coil within the audible spectrum (1Hz - 20KHz) so an amplifier fits the bill. It's a 2 channel magnetic field power amplifier rated for 750W per channel. That's 750RMS not 750IFL. (If lightning strikes) The current would flow as follows: Power Amp> 4ohm Load> NST 5000v 60ma> RF Choke> Primary Coil> Secondary Coil 1. Do I need a capacitor bank between the RFC and the primary? 2. Can a few feet of 28AWG galvanized steel wire act as a reliable resistor for the 300W current? What about 750W? If not, what can I substitute? 3. Can the amp hold together? I need it in one piece. Please point out the flaws. Thank you

Iam trying to build a dc powered tesla coil, for that i've make use of ignition coil of  scooter or motorbike driven from a fan dimmer and mica capacitors, it works very well and gives powerful sparks the output is fed to the 4 salt water capacitors the primary is wounded in a 4 inch pvc pipe with 10 and half turns , and secondary is 28 swg on a 1.5 inch pvc pipe of lenghth approx 2 feet, but it gives too much week output sparks at the top load , give me some suitable solution , i have chosen this as my final year major project?

Hi I am building a TeslaCoil with MOT and would like some advise. Have four 2000v MOT and 4 2100 capacitors from the MO

Ok, well I took apart 4 Microwave Ovens and I took the MOT and Capacitors. I already built the secondary with a 4" PVC pipe about 4 feet tall and I bought the primary (copper tube). I am using a fan from MO for my spark gap so it will rotate and cool at the same time. Want some advise on this build before i post it as an instructable. I read somewhere that I need to add something to block MOT's from sucking in too much current. Any help would be great. Thanks

Is this the right way to make a 2 MOTstack and is this the right way to ballast it with a MOT? for a tesla coil?

Help with building a tesla coil? Answered

I want to build a tesla coil, but I want to verify with the instructables community that it won't blow up, burn down my house, turn into skynet, etc. Here's my plaaaauuuuuuhn: For the transformer, I'll be using an old negative ion generator thing that takes in 120VAC and outputs 7.5kv(pic). For the primary, I'll use old speaker wire in  a cone shape (possibly using acrylic). For the secondary, I'll use 32- gauge magnet wire (pic). And for the spark gap, I'll use two bolts in a box, possibly with a computer fan cooling it. And for the capacitors, I'll just use an array of Leyden jars. My questions: 1. What diameter should the coil form be? I have some random white tubing which has an OD of 1/2 inches, 1/2 PVC piping (which actually has an OD of 7/8 inches), and 3/4 inch PVC piping. And is there a better alternative to these? 2. Should I use chokes on the input/output of my transformer? For those, I think I'll just wrap a bunch of wire around a pen. 3. Should I varnish it? 4. How powerful will the EM be from this thing? Exploding computers aren't that good. If I have made any errrors, please tell me.

Tesla Coil Power Supply Question?

Does anyone think I can use a florescent tube ignition/driver circuit to power a tesla coil (small). What I mean is that can I basically take out a fluorescent tube from its socket and plug in my wirings for the primary coil (capacitors and spark gap included). Tesla coil anyone with new design ideas?

I am in the early stages of building a new Tesla coil. After over 10 years without one I think it is time to add one to my collection again ;) As always I want to stick to to the classic design, meaning except for the HV supply all will be home made, including the capacitor. No no fancy electronics, just high voltage, a cap and a spark gap... However, classic must not always mean there is no room for improvement. Of course you can measure or calculate the frequencies for your primary and secondary coil before even starting to power it up - but where is the fun in that?? My last Tesla coil was driven by a 2KW transformer delivering 25.000 Volts. This time I go smaller for indoor use and will aim for a simple neon sign transformer with around 3000 volts and 20-30mA output. Reason for this that I plan to make an Instructable out of it if I find the time and would prefer to use power supplies that can be obtained in most countries without totally blowing the budget. I did some research on the net to see if there are any significant developments but the only things I could find are in relation to the spark gap or to use a conical primary coil. For the conical coil I could not even find any comparison to standard flat coil in the same system or a decent explanation why it is claimed to be so much better. My aim is to go a different way for the primary completely. Instead of using copper pipe in a standard winding pattern I want to try a quadfilar coil instead. My early tests on a small scale confirmed that a bifilar coil is better than a standard coil. For some weird reson the magnetic field reaches further and is stronger while at the same time there is less loss. So far bilifar coils are only used on some charging pads and "wireless power supplies" for TV sets. In most induction cooktops, where the benefits would be extra obvious, they are not used due to the higher cost factor of producing them. Big question here is: Has anyone experimented with bifilar or quadfilar coils in high voltage applications and is willing share some insight?

Testing Tesla coil frequency with a multimeter frequency (Hz) meter?

My multimeter can measure up to 20MHz and I was wondering if I could test the resonant frequency of my Tesla coil by running it (untuned) then having the multimeter attached to an inductor a few feet away?  Would this work or would I need some kind of small circuit attached to the multimeter as well? If I could do this would it work with the primary as well?

electronic ballast flyback driver...can i wind the wires around the primary of the flyback?

I have a electronic ballast and a flyback . I am having problems finding the primary coil pins of FBT because i dont have a multimeter. so i was just thinking that can i wind two ballast Vout wire around the flyback primary (the metallic structure , or whatever you call it) there are total 6 wires on the E-ballast. two are for input and 4 for output. the output wires are in sets of grey and white wires.  I was thinking that i will take one grey wire and wind it around the fbt primary(metal thing) and then connect it back to white wire. is this correct? also can i wound a feedback coil from the other 2 wires? PLEASE ANSWER....................ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED. : )

I found a site from an instuctable (http://lifters.online.fr/lifters/labhvps/tht.htm) but it doesn't work. I have two transformers one is old from a TV and the other is new from an monitor, from that site I find out the primary and hv negative for the old one but i didn't find out the polarity of the primary coil pins. At the new one the methods from the site didnt work. please help me.

Can I modify a Microwave Oven Transformer into high voltage? I had a MOT. secondary coil: 2kV output I heard some people in internet were modify the MOT into high current Can I modify the MOT Primary Coil into a few turns. Just like this formula : Vs/Vp = Ns/Np The original is : Vs/Vp = Ns/Np      2000/220 = 2000/220 In my imagine : 30 turns heavy primay New one : Vs/Vp = Ns/Np       Vs/220 = 2000/30     Vs=14 666.6667 Can I do this?????????????????????

Should I use it? Answered

I got this flyback transformer without high voltage cable so I cut it until I found a tiny piece of metal. Is it safe to use the transformer ? and If it is how do I find the best coils to be the primary and the feedback from the 2n2055 driver.

In transformer formula , the primary turns and secondary turns affect the voltage and current directly. Why some transformer output voltage is affect by frequency and core type , just like Flyback Transformer(LOPT) and Tesla Coil specifically is Solid State Tesla Coil?
