What sort of spring would I need for the magnet mounted to the vertical shaft that slides up and down? In short I want to know every little detail about building it before I begin so I don't go buying a lot of unecessary stuff and waste money.

PMA ALTERNATOR AND ROTOR

Hello to all, I recently purchased a Permanent magnet alternator that will produce 12 volts at 150 rpm. I have already made my own 31 anches blades (3 blades), got a hub out of an old air aconditioning unit, but the problem is that this hub has the blade mounting angles in the opposite way...in another words it will spin counter clock wise :( Will this afect the energy output??? Carbon Fibre Rotor Blade

I wish to construct a pair of 70cm long carbon fibre rotor blade for my rc helicopter. The inner part of the blade is hollow to reduce weight. Portable hydropower

Hi! I am in a senior in high school and am required to do a project as a part of my stem class. I am planning to make a portable hydropower power bank that someone could use when they're camping to charge their mobile devices. The problem is I don't know how to go about actually doing this. I was planning on making a small stator and rotor for my generator but after further research I found out that I could use a motor and a diode instead. Any help on which would be better would be greatly appreciated. I also am confused on what type of battery to use(it will be inside my device and will be the power bank for charging devices). I was planning on using a 5000 mAh, 5V lithium polymer battery, but am not sure where to buy one(If u just search 5000mah 5v battery, the responses come up with 3.7V.  I will also need at least 2 usb charging circuits. Honesty any guidance in what I should would be helpful. Thanks! If your looking for examples of this I would look up the blue-freedom portable hydropower.

How much lift is created by a half-sized rotor?

If there is a rotor of 26ft rotating at 600 rpm and lifting 635kg of weight at 1200ft/min 14000ft so if there is rotor of 13ft HalfSized 26/2 =13 and same rpm 600 & same power so will it lift half of the weight like 635/2=318kg at 1200ft/min 14000ft ? if not then how much half sized rotor will lift at same rpm and power if 26ft rotor is lifting 635kg at 600rpm at 1200ft/min upto 14000ft then how much 13ft rotor will lift at same rpm and power at 1200ft/min upto 14000ft ? Reduce speed of an RC motor?

I took apart a RC helicopter and stripped everything so its just the motor operated by remote. I plan on attaching a camera to the end if the motor and my goal is to make a pan/rotate base mount thing. However even on the slowest speed (lowest on the throttle) the motor spins way to fast. Is there anyway to control the speed or slow it down? Please Help

Maintaining a stable voltage on a wind turbine?

Every couple weeks a new instructable comes up on some green energy thing or another, but one I am really interested in is wind.  The problem I see is that with wind ranges from 5 - 25 mph, the voltage change is extremely problematic.  When I see people putting permanent magnets on alternators for use with wind, it seems ridiculous.  Even if you are using an inefficient battery-storage off-grid system, you still need to maintain 12-15 volts to charge your battery, and an alternator is made to do that by varying the magnetic power.  Now I understand the extremes of a alternator's voltage regulator are likely fairly narrow, but still quite useful in generating wind energy.  What I am looking at is 3-5kw of grid-tied power.  This is great and all, and possible in for me, but I don't see how I could maintain a stable enough input for it to work.  Most inverters are for solar power and aren't grid tied. The next most common are grid tied solar which take 12v DC and scale it to 115 ac across three phases.  Finding a grid-tie 5kw 3 phase in and out ac grid tie inverter is extremely hard, but not impossible.  The only thing that is impossible is finding one that can handle highly unstable voltages.  So the options I am left with are using a variable transformer to bring the wind power down to 12v and then rectifying it, then pumping it through an inverter which leaves me with 70 - 80 % of the original power.  My other option is to, like a car alternator vary the rotor voltage to maintain the desired end voltage.  The one problem I see with this is that there is a large amount of potential energy not tapped.  For example lets use 1 as the relative output as well as the input to generate a magnetic field.  If the speed is 1 then both in and out are 1.  If the speed is 2 then the in will be .5 now the out should stay at 1.  But if the in had remained at 1, then the out would be 2 so essentially you are losing half of your potential energy.  This isn't a problem in cars because they aren't tapping the maximum power possible. All the time, they don't need it.  This is a problem with wind turbines, so is there a way around this?  What wold you recommend to do for grid-tied wind power.

I have several large swamp cooler rotors, would these make decent VAWT rotors if put directly onto an old alternator?

Sorry, I should have said Centrifugal Fan rotors, they are commonly seen in use with car air conditioning systems, leaf blowers, and evaporitive coolers (Swamp coolers). I'll see if I can find a picture or a video of them in use after I get back this afternoon.

When I see generator construction they usually suggest 1 stator and 2 rotors.

Most show 1 set of coils with magnets on a disc on each side. How would 1 rotor ( with magnets ) and stators ( with coils on ) either side of it compare? Just to be clear the magnets rotate.

DC motor

I had a 220v angle grinder. It was burnt. I take the rotor of the grinder out. Its completely fine. Now i make a DC motor using this rotor and magnets(for field current). My question is, how much maximum DC volts this motor can take to get the maximum RPM. Because the motor was 220v AC, Will it run on 220v DC?

RPM/MPH formula

I'm designing an anemometer with Arduino and I need a formula to figure out the speed at which the rotor turns. I have a rotor with three magnets, spaced 71mm apart, triggering a Hall Effect sensor which the Arduino reads and counts. Now I can't seem to figure out a formula to calculate wind speed from this information. Anybody got an Idea (or the answer?)

how to use bike gears to control speed of vertical axis windmill for pumping water?

I would like to use bike gears to switch gears eighter clockwise, or counterclockwise on a vertical axis windmill for pumping water. The purpose is to slow down the speed of the spinging rotor or switch it intoa idler gear, to allow the rotor to keep spinging, and to disconnect the water pump, so it wont' be damaged in high winds; Also not to slam the rotor to a sudden stop, by ingageing a brake. I am building this not only for myself, but also my church for them to give away free to needly people around the world. Thank you for any and all help in this matter.

I need Magnets arrangement for a wind power using car alternator N42 (20x10x2.5mm) magnets are glued on modified rotor ?

Hi all, I am modifying a car alternator to a PMG .The winding system is 3 phases the diodes are still connected to have a DC voltage and the rotor circuit has thrown away. The rotor have been machined and a steel pipe is weld on it to adjust the diameter.On the surface of the steel pipe I glue the 14 N42 (20x10x2.5 mm) magnets N & S pole alternately to have 7 pair of N&S poles.The number of poles is 14/ph.I am not getting good result at 1150 rpm it gives 15 volts & at 1450 rpm --> 20 volts.But i need around 15 Volts at 300 rpm how could I get it? Please advise magnet arrangement note that gap between magnets and stator is about 2mm. Hasen

Witnessing Human Flight

First posted here. Last Friday, I drove up to Maryland to see UMD's Gamera II human-powered quadrotor. They are currently pursuing the Sikorsky Prize, established in 1980. Here's the team testing a new control system. http://youtu.be/3B2of4V35d0 (sorry, the embed function isn't working)   During this test, Gamera II flew for approximately 65 seconds, unofficially tying the endurance record that the team previously set. This flight time, plus the ability to remain within a specific boundary, satisfies two requirements of the Sikorsky Prize. Because the rotors are so close to the ground, the helicopter is benefiting from a cushioning effect of the air between the rotor blades and the ground. This effect will diminish exponentially when the team attempts sustained flight at the required 3 meters. The helicopter transfers the pilot's pedal power by unspooling cable from pulleys, mounted on the shafts of each of the four rotors. Flight time is limited by the pilot's stamina and the amount of cable stored in each pulley. The rotors are constructed of carbon fiber, balsa, and foam, and are covered in a plastic film.  All in all, it was a cool experience. I've never seen so much carbon fiber in my life! I look forward to seeing the team win the Prize.

How do you attach the stepper motor shaft to the rotor axle?

I have two small stepper motors from a dot matrix printer that was being thrown away.  I have a wind mill ready to go but cannot figure a way to attach my 3/8 rod to the stepper motor shaft.  Any suggestions?

Micro Mosquito Mods ??

Ok so i have a micro mosquito and I finally got the repair kit for it (I crashed and burned hard.... broke a rotor) I love the little thing.....very fun to kill 15 minutes with... I've done some looking and I've come up with a few ideas on how to increase power in the tail rotor and make it a little bigger....to hopefully make forward and reverse flight a little faster.... if I am succesful is there an interest in this? would it be wanted as an instructable? also... I realize its not a load bearing helicopter..... but any ideas on ultra light cameras I could try out?

How can I remove the copper wire from appliance armatures, rotors? Answered

What I have is a collection of armatures & rotors from various electric appliances I have dissected. Appliances, fans, blender, even teeny computer widgets. The windings would give me lots of different diameter wire to ...wrap the ends of wooden pieces...bamboo at the culms...etc. Blasted steel gets in the way. What's a way to get at the wire without destroying it? Cold chisel the steel, separate, then cut each individual layer?? Please include details or a way to contact you if I need more info. Thanks

Quadropropellor concept

Last night I had this dream about a bizarre helicopter that used a simple but unique form of a propeller.  Conceptually, I see no reason why it should not work... but I'm not sure if it would be any better or more efficient than a typical propeller.  The idea is that the geared propellers rotate at the tips of the main rotor as it spins.  The outside ring is fixed such that as the central propeller spins, each of the out side disc spin creating lift from both the central propeller as well as each of the four outside propellers.  Because the geared wheels will spin faster than the central rotor, theoretically it might produce more lift than a single propeller (maybe).  I would like to hear other people's thoughts on the concept.  If someone has a 3D printer, it should be relatively simple to make and test.

Tiltrotor RC/UAV

So I posted this as a question a day ago, but I thought I might get a better discussion going here. The simplified version is that a friend and I are looking at designing a tiltrotor UAV or RC vehicle. As we are college students we don't have the disposable income that some people do, so we'll probably stick to a small RC vehicle just for the hell of it. Anyway, some ideas we've had for the project: Hardware: Folding for storage (see this link for reference: http://sportscarforums.com/gallery/data/748/v22_folded.jpg ) Coaxial rotor blades (unsure if this will have any affect during STOL but should help with VTOL Ducted Fan (a standard ducted tail rotor to provide the torque to keep the craft from rotating with the blades) Separate Batteries (dedicated batteries per each rotor, failing that, one large one for all systems) Amphibious Software: Auto-Hover (depending on the approach, I may be able to write a script to maintain a certain motor power level) Auto-Pilot (just basic stuff, like flying patterns and such, perhaps make it able to land itself when in VTOL) Additional: (totally unnecessary but cool nonetheless) Micro-Camera Laser-Directional Microphone Laser Range Finder So anyone have any suggestions? We were hoping to make this a reasonable size, as in the length of the fuselage being anywhere around 3 ft

It runs great cold but when it warms up it stalls  is hard restart it has a new carb  it has a new ign, . plugs wires cap and rotor. System dosent overheat

.wont idle correctly, under throttle it skips, loses power like it's starving for fuel.  I've replaced, idler air control motor, ignition coil, cap and rotor, fuel tank, high volume fuel pump, plugs and wires and fuel pressure regulator.  Could it be the distributor itself or does anyone have a solution?

Solar Windmills

Of the various renewable energy sources out there, solar and wind are among the most popular. Already windmills are springing up in various parts of the country. This got me thinking, what if you used some of that space on the windmill to harvest some energy. For example, what if you attached solar cells to the windmill rotors of tower to harvest extra power. What do you guys think?

Gas engine tachometer phone app?

Does anyone know of a tachometer app for a phone or PC that can estimate gas engine rpm by sound? One would enter options like 2-stroke or 4-stroke and number of cylinders, then hit the analyze sound button. I found one for RC helicopter rotors but couldn't find anything else.

havoc=picco z=venom micro rescue?

Im pretty sure that the "havoc heli" and the "picoo z" are the same. the back of the box both say "silverlit", and the helis both look exactly alike. pleez give me your feedback on what ya think. thanx. edit: i found this thing at towerhobbies.com called the venom micro recue, and it has the same exact rotors and IR controller.

What tools would I require to change the timing belt and water pump in a 98 honda accord 4 cylinder 110k miles on it? What would I need and how long would it take? I have this toolset http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00939094000P?prdNo=24? and a 1 / 2 ratchet as well, a 4 ton - jack and jackstands. I only make about 150 a week (I'm a student) so the 750 the dealer wants is a tad too ridiculous. I have moderate experience doing car-work myself. (Brake pad/rotor changes, struct replacement, oil changes, distro cap/rotor changes. The reason I'm thinking about doing this is due to a leak which may be the water pump or heater hose. (I'm changing the heater hose this week) If you could description of required tools and recommended tools to make it easier that'd be great.

Need help making a permanent magnet alternator

Hi - I have need of a small electric motor, and came across something called an altermotor.  This is a converted car alternator that requires a permanent magnet rotor assembly, the removal of the diode pack and a controller.  This is also supposed to be good for up to 4HP off 12V.  I've worked out everything but how to make the permanent magnet rotor.  Does anyone know how to do this?  I'd like to do this with high quality neo magnets, preferably with more than 12 bar magnets.  A car's alternator is the perfect size for the application, which is to run an air conditioner compressor for an electric car conversion.  A single 12V deep cycle battery would be able to run this allowing me to have air without cutting vehicle range since it would be able to operate off its own power system this way.  I'm not set on using a converted alternator though, if anyone knows a suitable 12V motor about the same size as an alternator that can produce at least 1HP and spin at least 2000RPM.

RC helicopter Hirobo XRB with pics now!!!!

I have a Wireless remote control twin blade helicopter for sale. This is not the cheapo mini copter you see on Ebay. This is an hirobo XRB, cost me $400 new still have the reciept. Comes with xtra rotor blades, remote, Lipo batterie. I have cut some of the plastic away to make it lighter in weight. The X and Y axis are adjustable on the heli and the radio. It flew great 1 year ago, The blades are a foam composite, ( you can buy carbon fiber ones online.) The colars where the blades mount are broken, so if you want to use it as the heli you have to purchase new ones from Hirobo, couple bucks I assume. Twin roto design ( no tail rotor ) this allows you to take everthing off including tail boom and jus tfly the little silver box in the center if you wanted to. Or you can use it for whatever you want to, everyone in this community is quite creative, I however am not. Someone can build some cool stuff with this. $100 OBO

OSIM uSqueez foot massager sparking how to?

OSIM uSqueez permanently dead. Dismantled unit found mother board 2A fuse blown. Check everything OK on mother board and replace fuse. Power on unit led under stop button light up. Pressed vibrator button works perfect. Pressed massage button strong sparking sound and saw fire in one to two second followed by blown fuse. 1. Measure the motor terminal resistance -> 0 ~ 5 ohms. Or it should should have some high resistance approximately 10 ~ 50 ohms. 2. Measure BR-B3D thermal protector which was in series with the black wire -> 0 ~ 5 ohms. Any idea which one is faulty part? 1. Think the thermal fuse is OK. 2. If the motor short, shall I do rewinding for rotor? Can't found this motor locally and if buy direct from OSIM too expensive! Any idea measure rotor coil? Thanks
