Micro sstc trouble Answered

I am trying to build the micro sstc by steve ward. My circuit  behaves like there is a short somewhere, but I checked  all the connections. The mosfet isn't connected yet and the 555 timer is getting hot, any ideeas?

SSTC Trouble Shooting?

I am in the prosses of building steve wards Class E SSTC( http://stevehv.4hv.org/classEsstc.htm )and copyed the secondary from here: ( http://www.richieburnett.co.uk/hfsstc.html ), i have it all set out i am am using all the componants he does only mine does not work(not that I expected it to work!). i do not have acsess to a osiliscope nly a multi meter with the Hz function so i can not look at the wave forms it the Gate/ anntenna. Any help would be much appresiated as i have not really worked with tesla coils/ resonance before.

Best MOSFET for a sstc? Answered

Which MOSFET is best for a sstc in the circuit given? If the input voltage is 140-220v. And is the diode(MUR1560) near the MOSFET(D4 & D5) necessary? Is there any way to exclude that?, By using any other MOSFET?Any MOSFETs with in build diode, so that i wouldn't have to put an external diode? or could a simple in4007 work in place of it? Any other diodes which are more easy to obtain?

SSTC MOSFET over heating?

The following images shows my SSTC work, it is based on steve wards mini SSTC. But the problem is that the MOSFETs seem to heat up in like 3-4 sec of running. Input voltage is 220v AC(rectified and filtered later using a SMPS line filter).

SSTC using microwave oven inverter?

I recently obtained a microwave oven inverter and I've been doing a lot of research trying to figure out how to power it. The microwave I found came with schematics and a decoder for the button membrane so I am able to operate the main control board and the MICOM board outside of the unit (with slight modifications) but I have yet to test the inverter in fear of blowing it up. Currently my question is can I build a 555 PWM to cheat the CPU or bypass it completely? if not then I suppose I could use the microwaves original circuitry to do so but I'd like to build a nice solid state tesla coil with it if possible.  Instructables is being retarded and wont let me add notes to my pictures  image one - Main control board to the left, MICOM control board in the middle, Iverter on the right image two - Slight modifications to power the board outside of the microwave image three - Used decoding chart to operate main circuit without button assembly image four and five - Showing the output of the MICOM board going to the CPU on the inverter and settings of Oscope (channel A)

Solid state Tesla coil circuit? Answered

In this SSTC circuit from Uzzors2K I am a bit confused were the 12V and ground actually connect to seeing that this is a AC circuit? Also seeing as the AC is immediately rectified (I think you can do it with a bridge rectifier) is it possible to power it off DC?

How to convert my telsa coil circuit to allow for audio modulation?

I am new to this but managed to piece together a working tesla coil. I used the steve ward sstc. The diagram can be found here: http://stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC5/miniSSTCfnlsch.JPG How can I modify this circuit to allow for audio modulation?

Resonant of Solid stat tesla coil ? Answered

Dear All.. I search on the net some sites to learn how the SSTC work. But my English is no good  I do not understand all as the author says. So please could you help me to know: -Primary and secondary SSTC sides  must be tuned to the same resonant frequency as SGTC ? -Or only the second coil is necessarily tuning? Thank you in advance for your time.

Why isn't my medium spark gap Tesla coil working? Answered

I am building a medium Tesla coil. I have checked all the parts of it and I cant find out why it isn't working.  The hv transformer is a 12kv neon sign transformer. There is a gfci but it isn't tripping. For a spark gap, I'm using a single spark gap made of copper. I have tried putting them at various lengths away, but they still don't fire. The capacitors have a total capacitance of 14.1nF and are rated at 15kv. They are ceramic capacitors and current is flowing through them. The primary coil is 0.25 in copper tubing held with 0.25 inches between the windings, of which there are 7.5. I have tried using 1-7.5 turns, and that didn't make a difference. My secondary coil consists of 2032 turns of 32 awg wire around a 4 in inner diameter pvc pipe. I can verify that the 12kv is going through all of the places it is supposed to go through. I have no idea why this isn't working, could anyone help me here?

How do I determine the primary turns needed for this PLL solid state Tesla coil? Answered

I have nearly completed my SSTC but I am unsure how many primary turns are needed, is it just an educated guess, or is it calculated? There are no specifics on this on the website http://uzzors2k.4hv.org/index.php?page=pllsstc1.

best schematic for a solid state tesla coil? Answered

Can anybody please help me with a sstc schematic? I'm thinking of building a sstc for an exhibition in my school and so i might need to run it for quiet a long time(like for a day with 5min intervals), and so it shouldn't overheat and die. Though I've found some designs especially the steve ward's sstc schematic, the problem is I couldn't get the ucc37322 & ucc37321 gate driver ICs, a suitable and more available substitute would be fine(I live in India). And which mosfet should i use for this purpose, i would be running it at 220v straight from the mains(in a H-bridge confg). And is the following audio modulator going to work with this?

Solid state tesla coil design? Answered

Well, I am planning to build a solid state tesla coil. I've already build a spark gap one, but the amount of control over the output offered by sstcs looks more enticing. I have been looking at many different designs, but I think I want to go with a design based off of Richie Burnett's sstc. http://www.richieburnett.co.uk/sstc01.gif http://www.richieburnett.co.uk/sstc02.gif Those are the schematcs. The first problem I'm running into is that he is running off UK mains, which are double the voltage from the US mains. Will the output of the tesla coil still be good if I am switching ~120v through the primary as opposed to the ~240v in the drawing? Would this mosfet (https://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=MTW32N20EG) work in the power stage, or should i get a higher voltage/lower current mosfet? I also need a substitute for the mosfet in the logic stage. Does it even need to be a mosfet? Could I replace it with a transistor? The regulation circuit also worries me. Doesn't a linear regulator need to be fed a voltage of at least 2 volts higher than the output in order to function correctly? I just realized how many questions I really had about it. Wow. EDIT: I uploaded the pics for the sstc. The first two are the ones that I linked to, the third is Steve Ward's mini sstc. I was deciding between which one to use, but chose Richie's because Steve's has so many ICs and seems to be over-complicated.

How do I take good pictures of my Tesla Coils and other high voltage projects? Answered

At the moment, I'm rebuilding my mini SSTC and the sparks are amazing, I just can't manage to snap a good picture. What sorts of settings should I use, how do I position my camera, etc?
