Screws with Round Washers

Do the round washers need to be used when screwing a flat screen TV to the base for tabletop viewing? The washers came with the screws in the small plastic bag. Where do the washers go? Do you screw them on the end of the screws after you have attached the base? Can you just leave them on the screw as they were in the package before you attach the base?

N64 security screws

Does anybody know how to open up an n64 without buying a special screw driver? I'm going to make an instructable on how to make a cheap, good, desktop power supply out of the n64 powersupply. If you look at it's specs it's pretty good for it's size! 3.3 volts at 2.2 amps and 12 volts at .8 amps. I'm going to but a boost circuit in and get 5 volts too (didn't want to use a 7805, if you're going to be using the 12 volts you want all the amps you want, plus what project uses 2.2 amps of 3.3 volts?). Plus I'm going to make it so that you can still use it as a power supply for the n64, and it won't be ugly.

small screw dish

I just wanted to say, if you have a broken floppy drive laying around, take it apart, get the small stepper motor out, take off the LED (bicolor if you are lucky) and contact switches, and anything else useful like a IR photogate, and chokes, desolder the huge pin headers, but after that... remove the round plate that is a part of the main spindle motor, it has a ring of magnet on the inside, it is absolutely perfect for holding small screws when you are taking apart something just felt like sharing

My monitor screwed?

I've got a 19 inch flat screen crt monitor hooked up to my mac. And when I play my music really loud, the image almost shakes like it would if I had the stereo hooked up to the power bar with it like it used to be. The stereo is on it's own breaker right now, but is it doing that from the actual vibration of the picture tube or is it dieing on me?

Removing an almost completely stripped screw? Answered

Pretty much what the title says, its quick a small screw too (in length) and I've tried quite a few methods online, such as placing a rubberband in the screw head and using a larger screw bit and a hammer. The head is almost completely stripped and the screwdriver gets like 5% grip. Any tips? D:

Getting a broken screw out of mdf?

Okay I have this problem with a screw being stuck.  It's a small screw size, like maybe #10, but can't tell. It's stuck in 3/4 inch mdf, and it goes through the mdf. I've tried everything to get it out. Pliers don't work, and I absolutely CAN NOT drill out a larger hole.  I tried super gluing a nut to it (yes, I know, stupid idea) didn't work. Only other idea I have is possibly welding a nut onto it, but I have no access to any kind of welder. I can get a butane torch with interchangeable 'soldering' tips, but I think I could possibly do a cheap tack weld that way if it gets hot enough. Other than that, does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I'd like to preserve the threads as I will be using the same hole.

Finding a very special screw

This cross stood on our wedding cake 50 years ago. The cross has three parts: the cross itself, the domed base, and the anchor rod that goes down into the cake. A threaded end on the anchor rod passes through the domed base and into the bottom of the cross. My wife gave me the task of finding a screw to attach the base without the anchor rod so she can stand it on a tabletop.I suspected that the threads are metric because the cross and its parts were made in Germany. Screws at hardware and fastener stores in our good-sized municipality are as small as 4mm, but this is smaller, probably a 3mm screw. I could order half of a dozen on eBay, but they would arrive only days before our guests come for our celebration. If anything did not work, I would be stuck. From photos by eBay vendors I guessed the screw I need is size M3 x 0.5. I poked around on the Internet and learned that M3 x 0.5 screws are frequently used in laptop computers. My laptop has some of those for holding the case together. I borrowed one of them for a couple of weeks until after our guests have gone home. My laptop will not miss the screw for a short time. Keep this in mind if you ever need a screw not available locally. Something you already have may be a suitable short term donor.

"It Will Be Awesome if They Don't Screw it Up"

Public Knowledge recently published a white paper on 3d printing (see link for downloadable PDF version). It compares low-cost home 3d printing technology with home computing and digital publishing, with specific reference to the possibility of DMCA-style legislation preventing the technology reaching its full potential. In many ways, today’s 3D printing community resembles the personal computing community of the early 1990s. They are a relatively small, technically proficient group, all intrigued by the potential of a great new technology. They tinker with their machines, share their discoveries and creations, and are more focused on what is possible than on what happens after they achieve it. They also benefit from following the personal computer revolution: the connective power of the Internet lets them share, innovate, and communicate much faster than the Homebrew Computer Club could have ever imagined. The personal computer revolution also casts light on some potential pitfalls that may be in store for the growth of 3D printing. When entrenched interests began to understand just how disruptive personal computing could be (especially massively networked personal computing) they organized in Washington, D.C. to protect their incumbent power. Rallying under the banner of combating piracy and theft, these interests pushed through laws like the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that made it harder to use computers in new and innovative ways. In response, the general public learned once-obscure terms like “fair use” and worked hard to defend their ability to discuss, create, and innovate. Unfortunately, this great public awakening came after Congress had already passed its restrictive laws. Of course, computers were not the first time that incumbents welcomed new technologies by attempting to restrict them. The arrival of the printing press resulted in new censorship and licensing laws designed to slow the spread of information. The music industry claimed that home taping would destroy it. And, perhaps most memorably, the movie industry compared the VCR to the Boston Strangler preying on a woman home alone. One of the goals of this whitepaper is to prepare the 3D printing community, and the public at large, before incumbents try to cripple 3D printing with restrictive intellectual property laws. By understanding how intellectual property law relates to 3D printing, and how changes might impact 3D printing’s future, this time we will be ready when incumbents come calling to Congress.   Podcasts and videos on 3d printing. How Can I Remove This Stripped Screw?

On my Honda SL 125 engine on the lower part in the corner, there is this one screw that is preventing me from pulling the whole thing apart. It's driving me crazy. The problem is that it is stripped and nothing I try works to get it out. I also sort of flattened out the lower half of the screw, so that I could try and grab the upper half with some pliers, but that only messed it up further. I've attached a couple of images of the screw if that helps.I read today that gluing a screw driver to the screw with super glue might work, but I wouldn't have thought it would. Any suggestions?

Where can I find a (very) small auger?

For some reason, I have found it very difficult to find an auger that is 1" or less in diameter and is long enough for practical use.  I have needed such a thing for both a science project as well as an automatic feeder.   I have only found this part in the form of parts in toys.  One of the toys is a demonstration of an archimedes screw water lifter, which I have obtained but it's not long enough to be terribly practical.  The other is from an old toy grain auger that isn't made anymore.  Similar ones are still produced, but the augers are made of plastic and aren't entirely straight or flush with their enclosure.   The best one I've found is in this toy: http://i.imgur.com/8vVWJgG.jpg I'd like to know of any manufacturers that make augers similar to that, whether they be metal or plastic.  I'd rather not blow money on expensive antique toys and destroy them.

The cognoscenti among you may know about the upcoming TED conference in Monterey, CA this week. TED is a prestigious, invitation-only, $6000/person gathering on Technology, Entertainment, and Design (TED - get it?), and attracts hordes of Really Cool People, such as Craig Venter, Amy Tan, Al Gore, Louise Leakey, Ravi Shankar, Phil Zimbardo, Bob Geldhof, etcetera, etcetera... About 1,100 people are expected to attend TED. This year's conference theme is "Big Questions," and speakers will be looking at core issues like who we are, where we came from and what our place is in the universe. ( WIRED)Of course, the vast majority of you will have no chance in hell to actually be able to attend TED, and meet any of these Really Cool People. That's why this year there's an alternative for the rest of us:BIL! This weekend, March 1-2, Monterey, CA(Stands for Breeding. Intelligence. Bil, loosely organized by Princeton University student Marshall Reaves, does not charge attendees but conference goers must create their own roster of speakers -- anyone who shows up at Bil can give a presentation there. The list of scheduled speakers includes some current and past TED presenters. ( WIRED)To quote their website: Our event is self-organizing, emergent, and anarchic. Nobody is in charge. My network is really screwed up

I seem to be fighting a loosing battle with my network, things just never work like they're supposed to.For example, sometimes I have to reinstall my network printer on both my laptop and my ibook to get it to print again, even when the server has been running fine sans problems for a week, it will randomly do this shit.Another example is, right now I "was" just trying to copy some music over to an external firewire drive on my server that I have shared. I had the permissions on everyone set to full access yesturday but I noticed when I restarted my server, it did not detect my drive properly until I re-seated the firewire cable :S Thusly somehow it lost my share configuration for my music folder.I set it up, but this time I left it on read only because I wasn't planning on adding any music earlier, itunes and everything was working fine when i mounted the volume. I went on there and changed the permissions back to full access just 20 minutes ago as I wanted to add some music to my drive, I right clicked in my mac os x explorer and made a new folder just to see if I could copy over now, it worked, aswell as deleting the folder. So I drag the 60mb folder of mp3 files over, and it just sat there...and sat...and sat.... until eventually giving me an error -36, upon searching about, it means "-36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)".That's straight from the horse's mouth, and that really tells me nothing, what exactly does "bummers" mean???It's frustrating for me non stop, and it does this to me with other shares in mac os x, or they will randomly disconnect for no reason, sometimes after 15 minutes or sometimes after 3 days. I will note too, I can't connect to my server now, it just says missing alias in the mac os finder. Yet I can VNC into it no problem, wowa, but just upon checking my pc just now, it can't access any shares on it either, the cursour is just spinning, however I usually have no problems with my pc's accessing it, other than the printer thing.I'm just so god damned frustrated with my set up, I've looked it up and down until I was exhausted, several times, and I know I must be missing somewhere along the way, but I just can't understand how it doesn't work like I want it to. Shares are set up, firewire is out of the question, permissions set up, mac os x can log into server, check. It's all good until I actually go to use it for something when I really need it.I'll have to restart my server now to get it to work properly again...it was fine until I vnc'd into it to change the permissions, im gonna try restarting it now and just access it from it's own screen, perhaps vnc has something to do with it.Oh and to clear up any questions before they're asked, this is how I have it configured, as quickly and detailed as I can explain it:My network starts at my ADSL +2 4 port router/modem thingy (Speedtouch 546, it has it's own connection issues on the isp's side, but they don't seem impact LAN side data flow)That then gets split off to:*Port 1: iBook G4*Port 2: 25 ft. cable to 8 port switch (I'll explain that a little further down)*Port 3: 50 ft. cable to apple airport basestation in livingroom for wifi*Port 4: My main AMD PcMy ibook is configured for DHCP with manual address 192.168.1.64The switch just makes the modem think I have like 5 computers hooked into one port lol...My airport, for a long time I thought was perfectly fine as far as usuage with my thinkpad, however, I've been noticing the last few times it's powered on, the airport connects to the thinkpad, but assigns it a 169.xxx.xxx.xx address which does not exist on my network, but if I turn the wifi off and back on, it connects fine and assigns it a dynamic ip on my 192.168.1.xxx network.Other than that, I have it in bridge mode so that it acts pretty much the same as if the laptop were wired via ethernet, vnc, filetransfers, and online games all work good albeit the wireless delay, still not bad in VNC however. My AMD machine is set up for static ip at 192.168.1.66Switch:Port 2 of my modem goes to port 8 (uplink) of my switch.*Port 1: My server (Configured for static ip at 192.168.1.65)The rest are just my B&W; g3 setup for static ip at 192.168.1.68 and an old P2 I believe is at .69 and a 1.5 amd athlon aswell setup on 192.168.1.71, all of those in no particular order except I made sure my server stays on port 1.I did have everything setup so my server was on port 2 of my modem all by itself, but I needed the switch over by my server so I moved it, however, I was still having these problems before hand, even when my server was running on a completely different motherboard! Also, maybe could someone tell me why my server won't boot unless I have a bootable disk in the drive (IE: my windows 2003 server install disk), just so it goes to "press any key to boot cd.......", of course I don't push any key, and it continues to boot into windows. However, if I dare start my server without that disc in there, it simply goes to "Invalid System Disk error, insert correct/valid disk (can't remember it word for word), and push enter"I've tried reinstalling windows server 03, and same deal, yet it's using the same hard disk for the OS that my previous motherboard used and booted from not a problem.I really apologize for the long post... but I've quite literally burnt myself out and lost all motivation with continuing to expand my computer network and so I figured I would ask for help on here for one last resort, but I know many people probably won't read it due to the long post, but I have a lot of problems I don't have answers for and I need to explain myself somewhat thoroughly or else I won't find the proper solution for the problem, now will I?

Torque to linear thrust through lead screw

Hi,I am trying to figure out maximum linear force I can produce with an electric motor through use of lead screw and nut. I have come up with an equation which seems correct but resulting forces are way higher than my intuition believes is correct.I tackled the problem from the perspective of energies:F' * p = M/r * 2*π*rlinear force * thread pitch = torque / radius [M/r = force at radius] * circumference of lead screwF = 2*π*M/p * (1-k) //k stands for coefficient of friction between lead screw and nut)Radius falls out of equation, which seems fine as force is provided by torque, which is radius agnostic. I used a 7€ stepper for source of torque which can provide 0.42 Nm of torque and a lead screw with 8 mm pitch and 4 mm radius, I assumed 15% losses. My equation tells me that such system can provide 280 N of force, which seems wayyy too much for a cheap motor.I have attached a python code that calculates linear force in case it helpsCan someone tell me if my equation is either correct or flawed?

Ways to hold screw with something without using nut?

I am trying to build a holder, that will hold onto a pipe. So apparently, it will be cylindrical in shape. And from 1 end it would be cut and curved at 90 degrees. And 3 holes would be drilled into that space. So like i can lock the holder onto pipe and take it off whenever i want, just by screwing or unscrewing. However, as you can see screwing every time would suck. Very inconvenient. And there is no need to screw 3 screws. 3 are for support, screwing 1 would be enough to keep in place. But if i dont screw all three screws 2 may fall off.  How can i do it so screws stay stick to the base. Use glue? of some sort. Use some sort of washer that holds screw(difference only that nut would be thick.) i need help. :D
