I am living 100 meters from the sea which results in high humidity from time to time. Got the message this morning: CPU fan has failed. Discovered  a lot of moisture inside my pc and the dust in the fan has become muddy. We had a lot of rain and mist of late.  What does the people on ships do? And others who live this close to the sea? I would really appreciate ideas on what to do to prevent that from happening again.

So...I go fishing for mackerels a lot. I normally use feathers and weights. What do you use? floats? nets? and what type of bait do you use?

I was at the beach a few days ago for a school field trip/ biology class. I'm always searching for material for projects, so I figured that while I was waiting for others, I would take a look, as something that looked like a motor caught my eye. It was just a rusty motor, but on the way back, while walking near a dumpster, I spotted something HUGE inside.  A REAL SEA TURTLE IN A DUMPSTER? I didn't know if it was real, but: There was no smell - no flies and bugs too. It's either a fake turtle, or has died recently.  The shell was peeling. The shell of a tortoise is in one piece, but the shell of a turtle is different? The head looks like it has been connected to the shell. I don't think that means it's a real one. The rear left leg looks just so real. If it's actually real, I would think that someone spotted it, dead, on the beach, and called the people that deal with that stuff. I think that it's pretty unlikely that the turtle fell in, as it would have probably landed upsidedown, and because it's pretty far from the swash (?) zone, even though I know that can travel way more than that, probably even uphill. Pictures below. We added a camera to our sea perch but now it won't submerge properly. Are there any suggestions or any sites that would help with the modifications to the sea perch?

I'm trying to make a mini "sea doo" sea scooter for under 100usd.  Im wondering if its possible to run a brushless motor with a simple switch rather than a complex arduino based system.   I will probably enclose the project in a 4-6in diameter pvc pipe with end caps and run the propeller shaft through a smaller pipe with 2 bearings on both end to keep water out.  I would prefer to have a hand drill style switch for variable speeds but if that's not possible single speed button will work also.  Also are li-po batteries a good option for this.  

If it is possible, how many RPMs would be required to achieve such result? Thanks for any help! James.

I have a ball python and i am trying to raise the humidity in his tank, i have a large water dish over a UTH and i have paper over half of the mesh top (quick fix, i need to get plastic wrap). i would mist his tank, but i am not home enough to do it consistantly,  would putting a piece of sea sponge sitting in a dish of water be healthy or would it be detrimental to Howard's health?

I found this in the black sea, and I have no idea what it is. It feels kind of like a bone, is a bit thicker than 3 peices of paper towards the wide end, and has a hollow tunnel going through from the small end and opens out in the wide end (see diagram). If anyone has any ideas, please tell me.

Why, for clearly group drone work, like clearing mine fields and searching for an airplane lost at sea, don't we have software that can coordinate a group of drones to systematically work together to thoroughly search a programmed area and either blow up the mines or notify "command" of a "hit"?   I can also imagine aerial drones being used to search for lost hikers or for military purposes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Somebody can do this.

Does anyone understand the different RPMs in centrifuges that will separate liquids from solids, such as Sea Salt out of Sea Water?

The aim of this creation is to assist weak/tired swimmers.  The platform (used for watersports) is quite far from shore (30m) and even with lifejackets I don't want anyone getting in trouble or drifting off.  I do have a boat for emergencies but it's too small for regular use   Anyway, I was watching a ski lift and thought that the principle should be applicable (in theory!) to my problem.So far (not very!) I thought I could use waxed nylon rope with floats placed approx every 1.5/2m for people to hang onto - the bit I have no idea about is how to get it all around the mechanisms which power it ( "mechanisms" because I can't remember the names, I really am a beginner so pls go slow!).  Also a bit vague re marine engineering considerations (type of materials etc) and power.  I know I haven't got very far but someone could pls lend me a bit of their brain it would be much appreciated.  Simple and not massively expensive would be a big relief!Thanks again for reading this,Kate

So I'm trying to make a music box. I bought a 15 note hand crank mechanism I want to install into an 8 inch nautilus shell. I also want to etch the outside of the shell like in the photo. I've never worked with shells like this before and I obviously don't want to shatter it. What tools would I need to do this? What should I be careful of? Anyone with experience working with shells advice would be appreciated. :)

Over the summer i have thought up of turning stones you find by the sea side into pigment. I have searched forever since then and I cannot find the cheapest way to break up these stones into pigment. Any ideas of things I could try would be great. Thanks.

Im planning on making an underwater jetpack something like this. However I'm a bit to dumb to figure out all the ESC and electronic components of brush-less motor systems.   Im also limited because this is a school project and in order to be reimbursed the materials need to come from amazon.  I will be using it in a chlorinated pool for demonstration but salt water resistance would be nice.  My requirements are as follows:  1.  Propeller must be covered as I may do another project after this one that requires fingers (im thinking 6in diameter pvc pipe with chicken wire or a metal grill over the ends) 2. Modifiable for different circumstances.  (I already cut up an old backpack and screwed a plywood board to it for mounting the propellers and  batteries, however I may decide to go with hand or foot mounting instead.   3. A trigger operable switch. (Cordless drill style although I don't care that much about speed control.   I'm planning this project to be for a senior year high school project (next year) so I have plenty of time. Do you guys think something like this would work for the propellers?  Their for air so I would expect significantly reduced performance in water.  However if they are to high rpm/low torque to spin properly in water perhaps I could keep the enclosure and switch out the motors for higher torque ones.

There is an on-going problem in the fishing industry concerning bait in the crab fishery. Bait is becoming almost as expensive as crab. At the same time, there are by products in the seafood industry that are just being wasted that would fulfill the required needs if it could be combined with a sea water soluble material that could be adjusted to dissolve within set periods of time such as 3, 5 or 7 days. Anyone have any ideas? No soap or any material that would disturb the natural balance of the environment would work. 

I want to get a few of my friends together (5-10) and rent/buy a motor boat to adventure around in the Caribbean with for a summer or so. I just would like some advice concerning the whole process. Me and a friend were given a free wooden optimist but, it was beat up with chipping paint and pealing wood. We want to fixit up and repair it to working condition, it also has a bunch of broken straps for the air bag any help or advice fixing it and repainting it. 

A recently constructed 24' hull (plywood on frame, 3 sections) that belongs to a set of outriger cannoes now need a coat of paint for the already marked waterline. the boat has yet to be primed. im thinking  "couple layers of regular exterior paint should do it" but it'd be a shame if i did'nt ask all you satly's here at instructables what you thought. (priming under way)

I am creating a web app that uses the tweet jquery plugin to display tweets of a specified twitter user.I have a list with some twitter users that I want to display their tweets, however it will be very difficult to rewrite the whole code for each one of the twitter users. Is there any way that I could only change the username when clicking on a specified link? Members and guests of Knox Makers had a great time experimenting with InstaMorph during our Build Nights. First, we tried using InstaMorph with heat guns and magnetic metal shop trays because that is all that we had at the time. We figured out a few important things pretty quick: Metal gets hot. Metal heat guns stick to magnetic shop trays. InstaMorph sticks to EVERYTHING. This led us to important realizations: We need olive oil. We need to avoid magnetic shop trays for this purpose. Through experimentation, we figured out that putting colored thermoplastic pellets on top of InstaMorph projects and then gently heating can cause cool effects where the pellets melt into the InstaMorph in wild and beautiful patterns. We had fun creating sea creatures together, everyone felt comfortable diving into their own projects, and we even used the InstaMorph to craft our own set of tongs for crafting InstaMorph, because meta. We broke down and got hold of a digital induction warmer and pan made for it. This made things go more smooth. Or rather, more safe. We found out that the InstaMorph does OK at the recommended temperature at our sea level (approximately 265 meters elevation above the sea level), but it cools and hardens VERY quickly and is difficult to work with. Most of our participants actually seemed to enjoy the more dangerous heat fun method more than the digital induction warmer method. We did not try other methods and we suspect that noninduction water heating would have worked a little better. We had multiple Build Nights with the InstaMorph to give plenty of people in the community time to toy around with it and come back with their own ideas. We also had members and guests experiment during our Open Hack Nights and at other times. In all, we had a blast. Sometimes I wonder how we earned our reputation as a seafaring nation... A DIY sailor had to be rescued by the Lyme Regis coastguard and lifeboat after taking to the sea in a DIY yacht consisting mainly of two coffin-sized plywood boxes and an iron bed frame. The anonymous man had spent several days on the beach, lashing his vessel together.  It was so obviously unseaworthy that the coastguard and lifeboat crews warned him not to put to sea. Unfortunately, he did put to sea off Charmouth.  On an out-going tide in an offshore breeze. Within yards, onlookers had to call emergency services, and the lifeboat insisted on towing the (for want of a better word) boat back to the beach.  The captain had been unable to make headway against the breeze with his home-made oars... I've got to wonder... how many of our own authors have been in a similar situation? (You get all the serious news in the Daily Mail...)
