Lava sharks are so cool, whats not to like about them, the have death rays, lasers and x-ray vision and as the grow older and mutate they get more things such as armor and more speed.

Instructables Shark Watching Trip!

First off, we didn't see sharks, but that doesn't mean we didn't have a good time! Yesterday (11/20/13) the Instructables crew went out on a rented boat (there were people to drive this boat) and went out to the Farallon Islands to try to see sharks because the site was able to get 1 Million visits in a single day!  So this was thanks to all of you! It was not the best day (bit rainy and cold), but we all had a good time and only 4 of us got sick!  Yay! Pictures provided by everyone!  Gif by Renee.

What can we learn from those Amazing old Sharks ?

Currently a Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is good for 400 year lifetime. I would do an annual harbor swim of port Nuuk and consume Hákarl  (cured shark)  followed by a jigger of Brennivín known as (Black_Death) for just another 100 years added to my life. Any ideas of a better method will be worthy of support and consideration. "Cold can also activate antiaging genes that help an animal better fold proteins, get rid of DNA-damaging molecules, and even fight off infections more effectively, extending life span. The cold-activated molecules “are evolutionarily conserved” across the animal kingdom, and thus these pathways very likely exist in us and these sharks too"

What should I do with surplus Vacuum Motors?

I buy and sell vacuums and parts. I end up with an endless supply of vacuum motors and abs plastic frames. These are mostly all Shark Navigator UV440 or Shark Rotator UV560 Vacuums (Grey, White, Clear, and Burgundy ABS plastic) I recently got a 3-d printer, and I re-purposed a heavy duty paper shredder into a nice plastic shredder based on this: https://www.instructables.com/id/50-Plastic-Shredder-Grinder-Recycler/ I am now building a filament extruder to recycle the vacuum frames into filament. Can I/how would I use a vacuum motor to make the extruder? Any other ideas for vacuum motors? I literally have an endless supply, and it would be great if I could do something with them other than make my weekly trip to the recycling center.

push fit Plumbing Fittings

Shark bite, proline, etc.    They seem to work fine in places that have plenty of room... the sort of places that I'd have no trouble with a solder fitting. But in locations that I almost have to work by braille, places so tight that getting a torch in is nearly impossible, the places that an $8 press fit elbow seems suited for,  in those locations, the press fittings  leak like seives!  Then the release tool wont release the fitting, and it is a huge headache to tear apart. Do they leak if pushed in too far?  if slightly out of alignment?  and if one is in a location where precise alignment isnt gonna happen, Then what to do?

See how it all began (but please don't visit!)

A news article on Nature today reports a find of living, growing stromatolites in an Andean saline lake (first image). Stromatolites are layered growths of cyanobacteria (photosynthesizing algae), and constitute some of the oldest (3.5 Gya!) macroscopic fossils known (second image).Update: My writeup above might be a bit misleading. This is not the only known stromatolite colony; Shark Bay, Australia, is the most well known, and there are a few in South Africa. This discovery is important both because of the altitude, and because it's an inland site without contamination.Note: If you don't understand some of the words above, open a new browser window, type "wikipedia" in the search bar, then cut and paste the big words into Wikipedia.

UFO sighting at my local air show?

I went to my local air show in Cleveland and I actually saw  a shark like figure floating around in the sky it almost looked like a flying fish but backward. It looked as tho it was actually flapping a tail around to fly. After it was way off in the distance I took some pictures of it that hardly compare to the first ones as tho it actually morphed into a more bird like object I was wondering if any one had any opinions on these bazar photos I and my brother took. I will admit im the type to believe in these objects being from other planets, I have seen Videos on Youtube stolen from nasa that resemble this "Thing"  quite closely.

CrowCam - Video camera taped to a crow

I was reading an article on attaching cameras to wildlife (Clipped to a Shark's Fin, Collared to a Bear or Attached to a Crow's Tail, Wildlife Cameras Come of Age in BioPhotonics) that mentioned cameras light enough to adhere to birds, specifically crows.Check out this video of a crow flying, foraging, and using tools all from a tailfeather-perspective:http://users.ox.ac.uk/~kgroup/tools/movies/crowcamS3.mov(Let me know if you find an embedded version)The work was done by a group at the University of Oxford and published in Science late last year:Video Cameras on Wild BirdsThere's also a nice NPR piece on the subject here:Crow Cam Captures Creative Behavior in the WildI find crows to be one of the most interesting urban animals, and I love how this video lets me voyeuristically peer in on their antics. Which animals would you watch?

Trash movies

Did anyone else notice the flood of extremely bad movies this year? Zombies, Nazi-Zombies, deadly virus that turns people into zombies... And then there are these "creature films".... Sharknado (1 to3 !!!), Three headed shark attack, Sharktopus VS Whalewolf, Lavalantula, Megashark VS Kolossus .... Of course we also have a lot of adventure films in the lord of the ring style... What is it that all these movies have in common? They all take at least 90 minutes from your life LOL Not sure where to start, the bad acting, the boring dialogs, the special effects - some are below high school level. So what is it that makes companies produce such crap? I admit I can quite enjoy a trash movie every now and then, but the level of trash is now higher than anything. Do you think it is the fun of making it that drives the people, desperation to at least make a movie once or what it is? Can't be to satisfiy the people buying those movies ROFL

Great Adventures

Does anyone remember the old Great Adventures sets? I collected almost all of them for my kids when they were younger. We had the castle complete with all of the Knights, the King, the invading King, the bad knights, the wizard, the small dragon, the large dragon, the "Special" knights, the boulder launching cannon etc. We also invested in the western town set. We had the sheriff, the deputy, the jailer, assorted bandits, the bucking bull, etc. Another set was the pirate ship. We collected the large ship, the small ship, all of the captains, sea serpent, pirate island, shark raft, the iron whale, and over two-dozen pirates! We had a ball playing with these things. Me and the boys spending good quality time together. Then we had a small problem. i was transferred for work and the boys thought they had to leave everything behind (including the great adventures sets they loved!) They never told us though. We thought that they were just having issues with the move in general. We followed some tips from a buyers agent website (mainly the one entitle Communication) and figured out that they were worried about leaving behind everything. We quickly fixed the misunderstanding and resumed a peaceful move.

Just about done with this site

This site has jumped the shark.  It used to be a good place to find DIY projects of all kinds for all skill levels.  Over the past few years, it has changed in the following ways. - The majority of new instructables on the site involve elite technology - 3D printers, laser cutters, etc - that are too expensive or require a membership to Techshop or similar to have access to them.  In other words, they are mildly interesting to see what's possible, but of no use to the average person. - Many instructables are just implementations of things that can be commonly found on Pinterest and are being passed off as original ideas. - Drug content has started showing up as instructables.  While I understand that some states have legalized cannabis, not all have, and I don't want my family to be exposed to it. - "Collections" may be useful in some cases to pull together instructables on a common theme, such as photography or boat building, but they are overused so much that they clog up everything else on the site.  Again, it's an example of people posting without creating any new content. - I'm a non-paying member of the site and the ads and other "recommended links" have started taking over everywhere. For years I've been following the site and checking the recent instructables posts almost daily to see what's new.  The site continues to meet other's needs, and that's what's important, but I'm sorry to say that it's no longer worth my time.

Back from the Big Peach

Back from Ole Southey, The Sweaty Apple, Ted Turners Bidet. Yep, talking about Atlanta Ga. and thanks to the interweb I can annoy millions with my travel log.If you like you can check out my pix, I took over 1400, but didn't put all of them online, sorry about the low quality and the image tag, I get tired of finding my pix on other's pages. So my wife and I stayed in an inexpensive best western in midtown, alright hotel, great location, thin walls. We visited the Ga Aquarium, we were underwhelmed, perhaps spoiled by multiple trips to the Shedd Aquarium we were disappointed in that it took only three hours to tour the whole facility, TWICE. The whale sharks are cool, but the cafe is to be avoided, the "burgers" I ordered still had ice in the middle. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is an absolute jewel, I've visited dozens of gardens and this one tops the list, the highlight being the Fuqua Conservatory where you share the environs with poison arrow frogs, along with an outstanding orchid house. The High Museum, is hard to judge, we visited the special exhibits only, it was interesting to see a Rembrandt in person, and the Annie Leibowitz gallery was nice. The Fernbank Museum of Natural History, this one I sadly say, pass on. I LIKE dioramas and natural history museums, but without the Imax movie, it would have taken 45 minutes tops to see the whole thing. Finally the Zoo, a must visit, be sure to visit on a week day, Atlanta seems to be populated entirely with soccer moms witha sense of entitlement and double wide strollers. The zoo has pandas, but the red pandas have greater charm and charisma to them, and you don't need a special ticket.FoodThe only restaurant we dined at worth noting was the South City Kitchen, the food was so good you'll mourn that you will never eat that good again, the She Crab Soup and Catfish Ruben are delicious. And Weissenheimer hambergerler, PM me, Okay ?

What fun project can I do with around 300 Liconix high powered laser lenses Collimator ,optic lenses, Optic Filter..etc

Old Neighbor of mine was a Senior Laser Technician for Liconix about 10-15 years ago probably still works there. Anyhow he always would always be working on lasers Argon, Helium, Krypton, and his classic cars and overtime his family became sort of family to me. I would watch in awe as he worked trying to learn as much as possible. So I would help him work on his cars or Fix a PC for him here and there or take care of his son. I was only 13 at the time, but he was nice enough to give me a couple lasers for helping that his work was going to discard, some helium, Argon. I had to give the Argon back though because he sold his house and was moving to a better neighborhood. Plus it kept blowing the fuses in my parents'house from the power load. PGE was getting angry cause for some reason the street light sensors in my neighborhood were somehow getting burned out all the time *shrug* I don't know how and had to keep repairing them. Before he left he gave me some extra tubes for when my others eventually died. Most helium and tons of lenses of various sizes which are all tucked away in a box. In my dad's Garage of Death yeah he's a pack rat. But I found a couple of the lenses when I came to visit that I had sitting around the house and thought to myself time to dig the box out, so I'm slowly digging my way to it. Just don't know what fun project to do with all of it other than making a Laser Beam of doom or putting them on Sharks with fricken laser beams attached to their heads I also have a Fresnel lens from a 45 inch rear projection TV. Any Idea what fun project I should make with all of it ? I bet it would make one hell of a laser pointer for my Celestron GPS-GOTO C11 Telescope haha. Thanks for any idea's.

Vulcan Flies!

The last air-worthy Avro Vulcan Bomber is flying again! After seven million GBP, and countless hours of work, XH558 is again in the air, and has completed weeks of tests and trials, and her crew are anxiously waiting for the permit to fly. This is wonderful news, and genuinely emotional. Vulcan is an absolutely beautiful aircraft, and I was privileged to be present at almost her last flight near Manchester well over a decade ago.I have no idea what preceded Vulcan in the airshow, because all the time the preceding act was show, Vulcan was flying in a holding pattern over the Pennine hills. Whatever was flying in front of me, all I and many of the crowd had eyes for was this shark-like presence circling on the horizon, like a predator haunting a reef. When she came closer for her actual show, it was one of the few times I have gotten genuinely emotional over a machine. Her grace, power, lines...I'm even getting a lump in my throat as I type.It is one of the highlights of my life to have been there when the Vulcan crew, believing she was about to be pensioned off forever, broke air-show rules and flew over the crowd, at low altitude, with full afterburners on.It was the loudest sound I have ever heard, explosions included. My ears actually shut down. As she went over, I screamed and shouted with sheer joy, and I could not hear a noise I made! After she passed, as hearing slowly returned, I realised that it was still noisy - every single car alarm was sounding, triggered by the noise of Vulcan's passing. There were a lot of cars. It's been years since then, and it still stands clear in an otherwise patchy memory.I am literally bouncing at the idea that I might get to see her in the air again.UnfortunatelyBut there's a hitch. They've spent millions already, but they need more. Simple day-to-day maintenance costs, plus the rising price of fuel, mean that it will cost upwards of 50,000GBP per month to keep XH558 in the air. That's a lot.I don't normally do things like this, it's close to genuine spam, but I'm asking you all a favour. As Makers, lovers of the art of machinery, I'm asking you to contribute.Donations should be sent to VTST, Bruntingthorpe Airfield, Lutterworth, Leicestershire, LE17 5QS, United Kingdom, or by ‘phone to (44)116 247 8145, or online at http://www.vulcantothesky.com .If you don't fancy sending cash, you could buy something from their shop.Donation web pageThat's it, folks - begging over.

Fishing the traditional way

A while ago I had a very bad day of fishing in terms of catching something for my frying pan or freezer.Same story for the old bloke sitting a few meters away from me.So we decided to pass some time with useless chats about our previous record fish we caught. While the old bloke changed bait I noticed that he did not have a hook at the end of the line.....What is that contraption and how do you catch fish with it?Old bloke laughed and said he goes hunting a lot too and always keeps the antlers from deer and such.Instead of a hook he used a round and pointy bar with a little notch slightly off the middle.Couldn't figure out how this possibly could hook a fish, so got a bigger laugh for it this time :("Make a loose fist, put it in and then pull on the line." he said and I was dumb enough to assume it would not work :(Figure it out by getting two bleeding pricks...Fish swallows the "stick" inside the bait and one there is some pull one pointy end will always get stuck. The other moves until there is no room to move anymore and the fish is spiked up for good.Only downside is that one you get a fish too big it might not grab - bad luck then LOLThis approach instead of steel hooks reminded me of the bamboo fishing poles my grandfather used to make.Be it for eel, trout, carp or even from the boat for pollock and sardine - he loved his bamboo.Even made me my fisrt fly fishing rod from a piece of bamboo :)The old guy however had more than hand made rods or horn needles as hooks. When his hands were still as good as his eyes he even made flies from these horn sticks! He explained the process to me but I never had the patience for normal flies and doing this with horn sticks and estimating how big the biggest fish might be while making sure it is neither too heavy nor fails to float...What I really liked about this otherwise wasted fishing day was the stories I got from the old man."You don't need fancy or oversensitive gear to fish, a safety pin and some packing coad do just fine if you are hungry!"Best story was how he caught a 2m gummy shark with a hand line meant to catch some sardines for bait.I could really his 3 hour struggle to get the thing on board LOLWhat are your most successfull old school or just plain weird catches with something a real sports fisherman would not even touch to cast?
