Shiny Paper

I recently puchased the book "Brain Jack" and the cover is made of that reflective paper that has an almost prismatic effect, i was curious to know if there is a way to MAKE this kind of paper as opposed to buying it.

I want to custom color my n64. around on the web i have seen quite a bit of n64s that have been custom painted. And some of them are very very shiny, like the original fat PS3 finish. I was hoping to try and create such effect but don't know where to start...

Stanley Kubric, I feel your pain!

I have discovered that it is a major pain dans la derriere to take a decent photograph of an object that is, really, a near-featureless shiny black box. The best I've come up with so far us to stand a candle inside.  My camera is auto focusing, and it keeps locking on to the reflections in the shiny surface - I want to take photos of the object,  not of me or the room around me. Any suggestions?

Is it worth dropping $400 on a shiny new Rigol DS1054Z scope?

I will describe my situation: I am a hobbiest that likes to make cool projects, and plan to get into maybe RF analog stuff, (maybe start out with making a few FM bugs, reverse engineer a simple video transmitter kit, and a few other things.) as well get into arduino some more, AC analysis (learn about Xformers, power factor, maybe some math, etc.) and I so currently have an old 2ch. 30MHz analog oscilloscope that is a PITA to make real measurements with. Not only is it huge and takes up a lots of space, but also I'm not even sure it is in cal!) I will be transferring into UVA (or maybe VT) for EE, and gone this summer for a NASA internship at langley. (maybe I will be able to take it with me w/ a toolbox of some electronics stuff!)   The scope I am looking at (what appears to be what many subscribers seem to use, and/or claim is pretty good) is the Rigol DS1054Z. I only know how to use my $30 30MHz BKprecision scope I got on craigslist from the son of a father who was a TV repairman, and have NO experience with the use of the fancy-shmancy digital scope! What little I know is from watching EEVblog review of other scopes in the past. (I do know that they can be useful for 'capturing' waveforms, and can be set up to trigger on a pulse, maybe a certain digital codes, and that could come in handy for reverse engineering crap.)   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v-tFYbc7h8   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2qdtQkBKhc   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCOhzU1O5A   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gStNYfqMXk     What sells it to me, being a complete newbie to electronics and digital scopes is that it has a nice big screen, the specs seem good (other certainly think, I have no intuition of what any of those things mean except the bandwidth, and maybe the sampling rate, 1GSa/s), 4 channels, intensity graded display, and it has loads of functions and stuff for me to grow into, and hacking it to make it think it is a DS1104Z is tempting, but I probably will not do that right away. Maybe once I feel what it offered is limiting.   The deal breakers is the $400 price, a bit steep for me (cheap for something this good, apparently but still.), the fear that by the time I really start using it, it will be obsolete and the same money can buy some quantum super duper ASIC tech whiz bang 3GHz 100Gsa/s 1GB segmented memory spectacular scope!   I am not really sure if it has a source, or signal generator either. Some sources claim that higher end ones do, or certain models anyway, and it seems like the official site say's no. http://www.rigolna.com/products/digital-oscilloscopes/ds1000Z/ds1054z/ That brings me to my next point. Should I also get a decent function generator?

3-channel RGB LED Color Organ

Pretty much I want to make a 3-channel color organ and hook it up to a single RGB LED. I'm really not used to analog electronics, but I'm pretty sure this could be achieved with a single quad op amp IC. Seeing as I would much rather trust your guys' expertise over my lack of said knowledge, I thought I'd ask the experts. I did get a schematic in Multisim, but I'm really not sure about the functionality.

What happened to my penny?!

When I used my newly made wind shield/stand for my alcohol fuel penny stove, the penny was deformed. I was using denatured alcohol for fuel and it was burning well. After it completed my test (boiled a cup of water before it ran out of fuel and without blowing out in the wind) and I was taking it apart to see how well it stood up to the new conditions I noticed that the once shiny penny had been completely deformed. I was wondering if anyone knew how or why this happened.

ReRapRequest

Do you have access to a 3d printer?  Can you do me a favour? Three years ago, I published an Instructable for a paper catapult, which has had a steady trickle of interest ever since. Recently, Instructables member hintss created files for it to be printed in 3d, but i don't have access to a 3d printer :-( If you have access to a 3d printer, and the time/resources to spare, could you have a look at the files hintss has posted in the comments of the Instructable, and maybe even print one off?? Please?  I'll even create a shiny new patch for you?

3 year old explains Star Wars in 90 seconds

This is just too cute. The video is of a 3 year old little girl explaining Star Wars very entertainingly. How do you remove black tarnish from steel window frames in my art deco era apartment?

I've gotten through the time consuming task of removing the 800 layers of what probably is lead paint, and have had some success with sanding, but it takes even longer then the stripping to get down to the shiny metal.  I think this is some kind of tarnish?  If so, is there a product someone could recommend, or am I committing to another 800 hours of elbow grease?  Many thanks in advance!

Guitar Finish? Answered

Hello, I am finishing my electric guitar, and i wet sanded and everything, and i heard rumors that you use rubbing compound on the last bit to get it to look good. In the instructable by Gmoon, applying a mirror finish (by hand), it says that he used Rubbing compound, but people keep saying, "I think you mean POLISHING compound....", and i don't know which one to use. I have the guitar all dull looking from wet sanding, and i just need it shiny. What is your outlook on this? Thank you

So anyway, I cracked open an Etch-a-Sketch and got aluminium powder all over my desk. Can anyone help?

When the top half of the case finally snapped off, a cloud of fine aluminium powder was ejected over a large area of my desk. I'd like to clean it up soon, (read: before my Dad gets back), but I can't figure out how to get it off. A light brush from a paper towel smudged it into a nice shiny streak, and blowing doesn't get near enough of the particles off. Would water help or make things worse? Anybody else have experience with this?

how can i be consistent in printing with rubberized innk?

I have a problem with rubberized ink.. . some tutorials say that I have to press it hard but when i do, it's like the paint is being scraped and the "shiny" effect is not achieved.. . I don't know what to do with the rubberized ink.. another thing is that, where does "bleeding" come from? I mean, what mistake can I possibly commit to see that on my shirt? is it because of not enough pressure? another thing, about the sides of the image, sometimes i do get a "scraped" line on the side of the image.. .why is that so? Can you give me some insights on what errors to prevent? thanks
