Do solar panels have to be in direct sunlight? I'm looking to make a "Sun Jar" and was wondering if it would work on my balcony. The only thing is our balcony doesn't get direct sunlight to it as it's inset into the building and covered by the above apartment's balcony.

Hello, I am looking to build a solar charger in a 4x3x1.6 inch (or smaller) box to be as portable as possible. My only problem is, I would like to mount the solar cell on the box. However, all solar cells are far too large to fit this box, I plan to use a rechargeable 9v battery for power storage. I was wondering if I can use a 6v solar cell, and still use a standard LM7805 5v Voltage Regulator to drop 6v to 5v, or if someone could find a 2.5x3.5 inch solar cell (9v) online somewhere (for cheap) that would really help (I've looked everywhere...) I want to build and install three lights about 10 watt each in my house garden. Powered by solar panel (80w),100ah dry battery. Hi, i would like to ask for opinion, i am building a solar system where my system start from using a fresnel lense to collect the sun and use it to heat up a boiler, the boiler transfer steam into my tesla turbine and the turbine will turn my generator to produce electricity. Do anyone have any idea of building an own boiler instead of using a pressure cooker that i had seen this idea in somewhere, And, is there any places can provide cheaper fresnel lense as the sun focusing tool?? i will need a cheaper price lense cause of shortage in my budget of my final year project...

I think this is where this belongs but everyone... i been looking for a good solar charger (obviously good), charge devices fast, holds alot of power, multiple slots to charge multiple devices, and atleast $50 online... or atleast $130 in stores (ya, i doint have much money), i thought i found good ones but i dont know whats actually good... so hope someone here can help me if it helps, devices i have i can charge are... hp touch pad, psp, smartphones, ps3 controllers, ect. a laptop too but i realize or would understand that theres not really a solar charger for that (that ones not to important)

Hi there. I am just new to the site, I have been wanting to practice solar cookery for a while when i stumbled upon this site. Guys I am amazed at what i have found here. I live in Noosa, Australia and its a very eco minded community. I have wanted to go and build a solar oven for a while but i live in an appartment so space is limited. we have a balcony which gets a large amount of sun in the morning till about 1pm. So i have an idea to build a water heater of sorts which i would like to be able to used to preserve food in the form of jams chutneys and any jared preserve basicly ( I'm also a chef so i have a know of alot ot things i can preserve including meats ) . I think my only issue is reaching high enough temperatures to be deemed safe ( above 78 C for long periods) . My idea to do this is to use a larger sized container say around the size of a 5 litre bucket and set up a heat sink to help the temperature to get higher longer. For the heat sink materials i was thinking of using aluminium cans and perhaps to line the bucket with it too ( perhaps just foil instead for ease). I would like to set up and array around the bucket to help collect as much sun as possible for as long as possible and seal the entire container to help condense the water pressure to sustain the heat. I guess i question is will a large abound of heat sinks help to heat the water significantly. any advice would be welcome and yes i wull document this when i make it on my next days off work.

I want to get these 12v solar battery chargers they come with alligator clamps to hook to the battery. i want to get enough for 200 volts so how would i hook the solar panels in series, and do i need a controller for each battery? and how would i rig that up and how can I get it going into all the 12 volt batteries without any damage to the batteries etc. And can this be done for less than $400 if the solar panels are $30 each and the batteries are $14 each. I found a smaller version with what I wanted to do at Popular Science but I want to do something on a larger scale. Im very new to electronics, say that i had something like a cellphone or mp3 player charging through solar power, would I just attach as many solar pannels as i please and wire them into the usb to whatever ipod uses cable? I assume that there would be some extra parts that i would have to put in like resistors and such. but what would i need?

Of the various renewable energy sources out there, solar and wind are among the most popular. Already windmills are springing up in various parts of the country. This got me thinking, what if you used some of that space on the windmill to harvest some energy. For example, what if you attached solar cells to the windmill rotors of tower to harvest extra power. What do you guys think?

First time working with leds. I'm building a 4 foot lighthouse. I have some solars lying around that have three batteries inside which says 15Hrs at 60ma and 1.5Hrs at 600ma. Would there be something i could put together with leds or a kit to simulate a lighthouse light

I wonder if anyone has tried this, using either a solar cell, or joule thief powered LED in something like a torch head fitment with a solar cell capping the end of the torch head such that the maximum amount of vsible light is falling on the solar collector and none is going any where else. Although direct sunlight may be ok to power a PV, because of local weather it could still be described as diffuse and tricky to get a constant intensity of light where it is needed. If it were possible get a gain in efficiency this way it also could mean that you are not constrained by the amount of area you need to lay out panels to catch sunlight, the collectorsand lights could be stacked vertically in enclosed units.Apparently PV'sare most efficient in the visible light spectrum which reduces concerns of radiation (UV or IR) If efficiency and power could be increased in this way small units could be joined in series or in gradually increasing size to power requirements.

I was browsing the site as I am often wont to do, and spent quite some time revisiting old 'ibles covering various solar projects, almost all of which are heat related. I understand from general consensus that PV (photo voltaic) solar systems are very inefficient and one of the worst ways to harvest solar energy (when considering the cost of construction and the energy transfer capacity, etc.) Almost everyone who knows what they are doing suggest that the best (and easiest) way to harvest solar energy is to collect the heat - be it to heat air or water, cook food, or other such purposes.Now, I have recently been fascinated by a discovery relatively new to me, peltier units. These devices, for those who don't know, can work in one of three ways. They can harvest and/or produce either heat, cold, or electricity.Basically, if an electric current is run through a unit, it produces heat on one side and an equal amount of 'cold' on the other. Yes I know you can't produce cold - but for the layman, that is what we call it.Or, if one side is heated while the other side is cooled, the unit produces an amount of electricity from the difference in temperatures. One example I have seen and plan to make use of is in vehicles - if you place one or more of these on your exhaust manifold, or any other location where the engine produces waste heat, and airflow can reach it to cool the other side, you generate electricity from the waste heat energy that would otherwise just be . . . well, wasted.But it occurred to me today, if you had a unit attached in the middle of a solar collector, focusing sunlight on one side of the peltier unit, and isolate the other side of the unit in some cooling medium (perhaps even just air with a heat sink of some sort - more likely a cooling liquid though), how effective would this be at harvesting solar energy (heat) into electricity?Actually, I have been using the more common name of peltier, but I believe that for this application a seebeck unit (which is nearly the same, but different) would be required. As I understand it, Peltier units are used more as coolers and are almost always constructed with Bismuth Telluride (Bi2Te3) and used around room temperature and below; while Seebeck units are good for power generators are often constructed of PbTe or, SiGe as well as Bi2Te3 and are used at much higher temperatures.From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_effect :The effect is that a voltage, the thermoelectric EMF, is created in the presence of a temperature difference between two different metals or semiconductors. This causes a continuous current to flow in the conductors if they form a complete loop. I have also thought up using a thermal siphon solar heating system in which the liquid flows past one or more water wheels which power a small (and obviously slow) generator - but at that point I believe it would be so inefficient and limited in use as to just have absolutely no practical application. The peltier unit (used as a seebeck unit) would probably do better, but I am not certain, which is why I post the question.

Maybe categories like small gadgets, garden, home power, cooking? Do all panels in an array have to be matching watts, amps, or types (film, monocryst.,etc.)? I do know that volts are a specific- 12, 24, etc. Thankful for any info as I am new to this and am considering a wind and solar system. Lets say I have a solar panel that gives off 5 volts at 30mA. if I were to put a ten ohm resistor in series with it would There be basically no effect because a 10ohm resistor woulkd limit it to half an amp, which is way more. Or does the solar panel act like ~ 167 ohm resistor, and adding a ten ohm resistor will limit it to 28mA?

Hey everyone, first post here. I am a novice at electronics. I am putting together a solar powered boombox. I have a 30w panel, a 10A charge controller, and a 7Ah SLA battery. I will be using this to run a 12v Lepai amp. Do I need something in my circuit that disconnects the amp when the battery drops below a certain level? I have read the if a SLA battery is completely depleted it will be ruined, is this true? My charge controller only has a spot for solar in and battery out. Should I exchange it for one with a spot to hook the load?

Question about solar cells. Since solar panels are encased in glass or polycarbonate, does exposure to the elements degrade solar cells? And if so, in what fashion? Corrosion of the traces? water infiltration? etc. etc? Or is it a matter of the fragility of the cells?

I'd like to make a solar powered cooler, however, I am extremely new at this. I was thinking I could just purchase an electric cooler and a solar panel with the voltage needed, and simply attach the wires. I feel like that is way too simple to work but I don't know what else to do! If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it! I want to make a solar charger to charge AA's for my camera, my phone ( LG Banter), ipod touch, and maybe a DS Lite. And if somehow I could detach everything except for the batteries for when I backpack.I have pretty much no knowledge on curcits, but I do want this to be a fast charger for the AA's. I was thinking of ordering and making a high-speed charger and making a mini-boost. But I'd like to spend less than $50 on this entire project. Any help is greatly accepted.

Setup: 330mAh@6V solar panel charging 4xAA Nimh batteries (series connected). Iphone is connected to the batteries. Can I simultaneous charge of nizn battery and iphone? what is the direct source of power charging the iphone? Do the batteries act as voltage regulator??
