Gear Study

The last Friday of the month is a build day around Instructables HQ. I've been meaning to create some art involving gears of different pitches, so I took part of my build day to do a study in gears. These are two laser-cut acrylic gears I made on our Epilog 36EXT that are half 10 in pitch diameter and half 20 in pitch diameter. I advanced the 20 pitch side about one-half of a pitch. The gears were designed in OMAX Layout, which just happens to have a nice gear profile generator. I'm hopeful about putting together a set that gradually change pitch diameter. There's a bit of slop between the gears, and I'm taking advantage of it (at least in this set) to keep the teeth from colliding at the transition. They only rotate freely in one direction; in the other they bind.

School course of study?

Hello everyone, I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not, but I am looking into going back to school. I would like to be in an industry where I can learn how to make things like robots, and electric cars etc.. I am sure these things will require more then just a basic degree but I would like to get started in the right path. The problem I have is, would these fall under mechanical engineering or would if be electrical engineering? I like the idea of building something from concept to final design where I learn the hardware as well as the programming skills to make the device do what I want it to do. So can someone tell me what course of study would be best? Thanks, Jester

I need help to study

Hey everyone, Im in my last year of school and my most important exams are coming up, these exams will decide whether I get into university or not. This is my second year doing this year because last year I f**ked up my exams so I repeated. I don’t want it to happen again. I really need advice on how to study and what to do and what not to do. I just feel really lazy, and im very pessimistic about life. Ever since I saw loose change, I got addicted to the internet, sitting on my ass all the time, I didn’t really care about life anymore because of what I see happening in the world. I think it’s because im not doing much exercising which is making me feel lazy. If Anyone wants to second that, or give me advice or links please do. I appreciate it

Hey Ibles! Help me choose what to study!

There comes a time in every Keith's  life where he must stop being a Keith-Kid and become a Keith-Man. Yes, soon I shall end my highschool life and embark on the journey to adulthood. Problem is...I...kinda have no idea what to study. The only thing I can really say I enjoy doin is....well...i dunno. I'm kiiinda good with computers....and ...well I guess my talents fall into the Art category. I enjoy drawing, (even though I havent drawn in over a year...that might be an obstacle...) I could maybe envision myself being a graphic artist, I dont know I could picture myself animating a commercial or stuff...I don't really know how it all works... I have some experience in video and photo editing. No programing experience, aside from knowing the definition of HTML (no points for that? come on...) So...basically.... Can you guys suggest what I should study? Also, over here in my tiny little island, there isn't much for Graphic Design....Theres ONE school, but i dunno all I see there are emo peoples and...i dunno...I cant say I like it very much.. SO YEA! Suggestions! Help a Keith out will ya? T_T

Electronics for Absolute Beginners, Study Guide

Hi, I am Kareen, I am a student and I am currently pursuing a degree in Electronics Technology. I decided that the best way to learn is by sharing what I just learned; it gives me a chance to really understand the subject if I have to explain it to someone else. I am in no way a subject matter expert in this area, I am merely a beginner. Every time I cover a chapter on my book (Foundations of Electronics, 5TH Edition by Russel Meade), I will post a corresponding link so others can study along with me, post suggestions, ask questions, and post answers. Because I am using a book and posting a corresponding link, this will be a structured study guide for those who want to learn electronics outside of the classroom. If you're interested and willing to learn copy and paste the link below to your browser; https://www.instructables.com/id/Electronics-for-Absolute-Beginners-Study-Guide/

A Study on the Geographical Locations of Instructables Users

I'm considering hosting the Instructables "Show and Tell," for the Chesapeake Bay area, but I'm unsure of how many people I would be preparing for. I'd like to know if I'd be the only one there ;) Right now, the easiest thing I can think of is to start an Instructable group for each state, and people can let others know through joining that states's group. Any other ideas?

World Studies Project on Steam Power

I'm doing a project for school on Steam power... It's origins, it's applications, the reason it died out, the future...Blah blah blah. Along with that, I will be building some small working models, a hero engine, and a piutt putt boat. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a beginner that would look nice and actually move? I have minimal building skills and funds, so i'm really looking for simple ideas. Thanks, James P.S. Any one realize the projectile potential of steam power? Real simple... Empty wine bottle, bit of water in bottle, cork it off...Need something more than tea candles i'd imagine...Could be fun! (I'm scaring my history teacher:D)

Right brain : Instructables

Not sure if this will work... I found a left vs right brain test online- more specifically ,http://www.wherecreativitygoestoschool.com/vancouver/left_right/rb_test.htm. I got to thinking, and I noticed that the people who call themselves creative tend to have more instructables than those who don't- so if you use the right brain percentage as a measure (however faulty) of creativity, than maybe I could graph the relationship, and (Warning- this is far fetched) find an equation. So If you could take the test, share your right brain percentage and the amount of instructables you've written, I would Greatly appreciate it. Thank you. (what I'll use to graph it - https://www.abettercalculator.com/c) Hope I'm not asking too much! :)

Last week, fi5e posted the USA - USB: American Flag USB Memorial here on Instructables. The project was a quick one, but the execution and goofiness in both the project and the video was excellent. The USA USB was clearly aiming for geek cred (despite using two USB ports instead of one) and pretty much nailed it. Now we learn that the whole thing was an exercise in being Internet famous. While the USA USB didn't have quite the impact it should've, here's a breakdown of what the goals were and 8 tips for getting more attention to your contribution to the Interwebs. Study: Ethanol Worse for Climate Than Gasoline

Ethanol is under fire again: At first blush, biofuels such as corn ethanol and soybean diesel seem like they would be great from the standpoint of global warming. The crops soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow, and that balances out the carbon dioxide they produce when they're burned. But until now, nobody has fully analyzed all the ripple effects of this industry. And Tim Searchinger, a visiting scholar at Princeton University, says those effects turn out to be huge. "The simplest explanation is that when we divert our corn or soybeans to fuel, if people around the world are going to continue to eat the same amount that they're already eating, you have to replace that food somewhere else," Searchinger says.Searchinger and his colleagues looked globally to figure out where the new cropland is coming from, as American farmers produce fuel crops where they used to grow food. The answer is that biofuel production here is driving agriculture to expand in other parts of the world."That's done in a significant part by burning down forests, plowing up grasslands. That releases a great deal of carbon dioxide," Searchinger says.In fact, Searchinger's group's study, published online by Science magazine, shows those actions end up releasing huge amounts of carbon dioxide. The study finds that over a 30-year span, biofuels end up contributing twice as much carbon dioxide to the air as that amount of gasoline would, when you add in the global effects. The rest of the article (and radio broadcast) is here

Entire Safari Library of 8,000 Technical Books on line !for free! for California Residents - free scanner too

I just found out the San Francisco Public Library sfpl.org has the entire Safari Library on line for free, for anyone with a San Francisco Library card. That's 8,000!!!! technical books. They have the entire O'Reilly library. Anyone living in California can get a library card. (Since The Best of Instructables is an O'Reilly book it's also in the Safari Library, but you know you want your own copy!)If you don't live in California, check your local library's website, and see what they offer online. SF also has many eBooks, and books on tape on line for free.I also discovered they have a scanner by the Microfiche in the Main/Civic Center branch (I don't know about other branches), that will eMail microfiche/microfilm pages to you for free. It has a regular scanner also, so you can scan a book, or magazine page, and email it to yourself - for free - no need to pay for copies. The scanner has a USB slot, so you can just save the scans to a USB stick instead of emailing them. It's on the same floor as the Magazines.I don't know what other libraries are doing but SF has a huge amount of stuff available online.

Americans avert energy crisis by dieting, study reveals...

Scientists at Cornell University, led by David Pimintel, have performed a meta-study and found that the easiest way for Americans to reduce, and even totally avoid, the looming energy crisis is to go on a diet. The average American consumes about 3747 kcal per day compared to the 2000 to 2500 kcal per day recommended by the US Food and Drug Administration. (This does not include junk food!)Producing those daily calories uses the equivalent to 2000 litres of oil per person each year. That accounts for about 19% of US total energy use.Pimentel estimated 6 kilograms of plant protein are needed to produce 1 kg of high quality animal protein. He calculates that if Americans maintained their 3747 kcals per day, but switched to a vegetarian diet, the fossil fuel energy required to generate that diet would be cut by one third.Pimentel calculates that the equivalent of 2100 kcal go into producing a can of diet soda which contains a maximum of 1 kcal. About 1600 kcal go into producing the aluminium can alone.Other suggested changes to the food production process range from replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-saving fluorescent ones, to using fewer machines, pesticides and fertilisers, and more human power on farms.Reducing the distance that food is transported could also cut energy costs: food travels 2400 km on average to its consumer in the US. This requires 1.4 times the energy actually contained in the food. Producing food locally would cut the energy expended transporting it by half.Implementing all the suggested changes would cut the US food industry's energy bill in half.New Scientist articleNew Scientist Environment Section, special report of energy and fuels

Effective learning

These days, internet is being used considerably by students as well as by the teachers. I think, moving towards electronic books and materials will help the students to learn better.Huge amount of college funds are spent on books and other study material. In addition to this, they have to be carried all around campus. The relationship between students and the existing study materials is getting difficult. So it makes sense, for the teachers and students alike to look for alternatives.Taking a step forward in this direction, I have started using electronic flashcards in my classroom. We use a website called http://www.funnelbrain.com to create electronic flashcards which includes video, photos, audio and text related to the study materials. It creates an environment for students to have an interactive experience and also with its collaborative approach helps students memorize and learn better.

Cell phone radiation boosts brain cell activity in brand new study

Brain cells are impacted by cell phone radiation in accordance with a recent study. The study detected an increase in the metabolism of brain cells. Brain cells were affected in the part of the brain near the antenna of the mobile phone. Brain cells are definitely impacted by cell phone use, according to the research, however further research is needed to discover out if that's a bad thing. Source of article - Cell phone radiation increases brain cell activity in new study by MoneyBlogNewz. Cellular phone brain cell research first done The first research undertaken to examining how electromagnetic radiation from cell phones impacts brain cells was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Tues. The research focused on how cellular phone use affects normal brain cell function, known as glucose metabolism. The rate of glucose metabolism in brain cells was increased more than researchers were hoping with cell phone exposure. When it comes to brain activity, the way it's done is with cells creating energy. This is done with glucose. The way brain cells work is that it is produced as necessary. The glucose is produce whenever it is needed by the brain. It's unknown if it's bad or not, however it was found in the study that glucose metabolism amounts are increased artificially with a mobile phone. Further research needs to be done though. How mobile phones affect the brain With all the phone calls going on, cell phone radiation has concerned medical experts. They have worried about what it's doing. The outcomes of previous tests have been inconclusive. A connection with brain cancer was found in famous cellular phone radiation studies. The proof that brain cancer was actually brought on by mobile phones in cell phone users was not there though. There are other things scientists have tried to ling cell phone radiation to. Such things as cancer or dementia due to brain cell mutation are examples. The effect of cell phones on children's brains has been a particular concern because children have thinner skulls, the radiation penetrates deeper and their brain cells metabolize glucose faster. Try to choose speakerphone In a statement responding to the cellular phone brain cell research, the Wireless Association said scientific evidence proves that cell phones, used within limits established by the Federal Communications Commission, don't pose a public health risk. The way cellular phone radiation affects the brain is nevertheless unknown really. Until more research is done, experts suggest Bluetooth earpieces and speakerphone should be used as often as possible. What is the best way to fund graduate school?

Right now there are thousands of university employees rummaging through and scrutinizing even more thousands of graduate school applications all over America (as well as other places, I would presume). Five of those applications are mine. Let's assume one of those five is a Yes. Now that I've been accepted, next Fall will start a trend of large amounts of money leaving my bank account rather than entering it as is the case with my current full-time job. I am guessing that a good chunk of people on here have probably gone through a similar situation, and I would like to know what the best way to pay for graduate school is. I have $10k of loans still haunting me from undergrad. Not too much in the grand scheme of things, but it's there. Grad studies will add quite a bit to that heap. Summary: What is the best way to pay for graduate school? What are reasonable living expenses during graduate school? (not a big spender here)
