Teacher Builds a Tardis

Sillysparrowness, a self-described "German teacher with a leaning towards silliness," described the process by which she came to build a beautiful, obsessively finished Tardis. Enjoy... YouTube via BoingBoing.

Building a TARDIS... Doctor Who.

My friend George and I suddenly decided yesterday that we'd really love to build a TARDIS.Considering this thing is 8+ feet tall, and we'd like it to be portable... does anyone have any suggestions for materials? I think more than anything I just need to go to Home Depot and look for supplies. Any brainstorming help will be appreciated. :DOh, and if you don't know what a TARDIS is... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TARDISOr, see below. The TARDIS pictured with the ever lovely David Tennant. :DP.S. I'm not starting on this until the Robot Plushie instructables is up, which will be by Saturday night, if not sooner. :)

Input on building a TARDIS Console bar would be appreciated

My boyfriend and I want to have a Who-themed room party at a sci-fi/linux convention in our area.  We've bounced around the idea of having a TARDIS console bar set up in a corner of the room, so I'd really appreciate ideas for the console that could easily be set up and broken down, as this is  going in a room we only have for a weekend. Ideas for random gadgets and doo-hickeys, places to have alcohol and the like would be greatly appreciated as well.  So far we know we want to have a quarter or half keg in the center of the console, located behind us. Leaning towards 10th's design, but might be willing to go for the 11th's more steam punk look. Also, decorating tips for the room as a whole would be good.  So for we want to make roundels out of foam and stick them to the wall with tack to imitate the 10ths 'desktop theme' and to print a door sized TARDIS door to tack to the door to the hotel room. The idea behind the party is that the hotel room and the TARDIS have merged, ala Time Crash.

Arduino controlled tardis light beacon with sound

Ok so I'm exceedingly new to using an arduino micro controller. I actually purchased it specifically for this project, after seeing someones prototype on youtube. I figured, eh how hard could it be? Very... I just can not figure it out. Anyway I'm looking for help with both the circuit and code and I'm willing to find and/or buy just about whatever to get it working. It needs to play the vworp of the engine and make the beacon fade in and out by push button preferably. I have 6 white and 2 blue ultra bright LED's already. A 555 timer, 4700 microfarrad cap, I know I'll need resistors. I also have an old iPod nano 2nd gen I'm willing to sacrifice to the cause if needed, or I'll buy whatever works best. I'm desperate. I have 3 weeks until this light needs to be done, and so far it's a bust.

"Metal" letters/Car "name" magnet

I recently bought a bright blue Toyota Yaris and I would like to put a magnet of the word "Tardis" on it. I want to make the word look as close as possible to the "Yaris" metal nameplate on the car. The letters don't have to be metal, but I would like them to be metallic and something that's not going to deteriorate that easily. A friend of mine had made something akin to this out of shrinky dinks that she painted with silver paint, but I don't know how long that would hold up.

TARDIS Console Desk/Entertainment Center/Networking Area

In a few months, I'm going to be in a new place somewhere, and have three active computers at once, not counting laptops, and the husks of old machines. I am also running out of space for all of these things. I was trying to come up with design project to one-up my other home improvement geek friends from college, and it hit me: A TARDIS Console. Take three cheapo desks, cut the surfaces in half diagonally, and remount them on a slight angle in a hexagon. Mount the computer towers on odd segments, keyboards, phone, modem, router, etc on evens, sling a monitor on one of the segments, and throw some random sci-fi crap around it. Throw a big light or something in the center, leave some cables loose everywhere, and put a layer of appropriate paint on it. Instant TARDIS console. That's the basics of it. It wouldn't take too much money, but a bit of time to do properly, especially the angled stuff. Add a little extra cash and a lot of extra time, and maybe use plexiglass and put some LED's as backlight. Put old circuit boards under the plexiglass, maybe use an old laptop with nothing but screensaver on it on one of the panels, and put some extra time into decorating and it'll look great. Maybe even build in an amp and an old Yamaha keyboard for fun. This is just some speculation and a bit of boredom on my part. I just thought I'd throw this out there.

Opening and closing a small door

I want to build a small cabinet based on the TARDIS. I want the doors to open and close automatically and, of course, make the sound. It will only by 12 or so inches tall so I don't need anything big to do this. Ideally, I'd like to activate it by touch. My first idea was to start with the wiring for The Most Useless Machine and move on from there. Think that's a good start? Any better ideas on how to do it? The full build will be in an instructable.

Can I upload a PDF into a comment on someone else's Instructable?

Hi there. I love this Instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/TARDIS-Card-Bigger-on-the-inside/) and while making it I ended up creating a PDF for the whole thing. I'd like to add this to the Instructable by uploading it into the comments, but I can't see a way to do that. I can upload a JPG but not a PDF... or am I missing something? I've attached the PDF for reference (the help forum let me). Any help you could give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

My wife's laptop died (NotebookComputer model D22ES). Can I hack its screen to use as a monitor? Answered

This laptop's LCD screen would suit nicely for a homemade Doctor Who TARDIS console which I have started to build. I plan to make a new custom housing for the screen as in the recent Chris Eccleston/David Tennant series. This all depends on being able to hack the screen to display inputs from other sources, eg video player or BBC Microcomputer, via RGB or composite video input signals. Appreciation for any help, or suggestions - Thanks! I'll give your due credit if this project makes it onto Instructables. PS I SHOULD ADD: the bit that 'died' is the hard disk, as a technical guy told us.

Email oddity

Is there any way to produce comment emails that are more sensibly organised? Take, as a typical example, the last comment-summary email I got.  This is the list of dates and times of the comments, in the order of the email: Date: Sep 26, 2011. 7:48 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:44 PM Date: Sep 20, 2011. 10:01 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 11:32 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 11:33 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 11:34 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 8:06 AM Date: Sep 22, 2011. 6:02 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:28 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:05 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 2:28 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 6:16 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 11:26 PM Date: Sep 27, 2011. 3:09 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 6:11 AM Date: Sep 20, 2011. 11:23 AM Date: Sep 27, 2011. 2:26 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 4:59 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:17 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 2:00 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 10:24 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 3:41 PM Date: Sep 27, 2011. 2:54 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 6:21 AM Date: Sep 27, 2011. 1:12 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 8:38 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:37 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:15 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 8:46 AM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:22 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 5:13 PM Date: Sep 20, 2011. 12:00 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 11:33 PM Date: Sep 26, 2011. 4:03 PM There is just no logic to the order, which makes it confusing to scan through and make sense of, especially on days with a lot of comments, and more especially when some of the comments are days out of synch. Speaking of which, those days-old comments didn't get a timely answer, because I didn't hear about them.  That makes me seem tardy and poorly mannered, something which I try not to be (call  it a cultural thing).
