Soundproof Theater

After playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl at a party in a sound proof room on a projection screen, I've been trying to convince my parents to do the same to one of our unused rooms. Build a "teenage hangout". It will be very hard to convince them to do this, the lower the cost, the better. Is there any cheap tricks do doing this (and still look nice)? Memory foam on the walls? Obviously the screen itself will take the most convincing, but if that fails I'll use our 60in TV (three years of begging at it's finest :D ). I might even make it into an Instructable.

Home theater Pc

I'm making a home theater pc for out in my living room. I had some problems with getting colour through tv out for some ungodly reason, but installing the catalyst drivers for my ati card seemed to solve the problem. Anywho, the specs are:Pentium 2 450mhz192mb of ram (I have more that was origionally in it, but I was having problems with it just flashing off and corrupting the hard drive, bad ram = corrupt data so I have yet to sort out what's bad)A really old 6 gig hd, I plan to buy a 80 gig hd for it in about 2 weeks.Ati Radeon 7000 w/ dual vga out and tv out obviouslyI think it's fine for playing movies and the such, and it's a generally fast computer, (I have xp pro installed) but the hd slows it down unbearably so hopefully I get that fixed soon with the new hard drive. I've had a 80 gig in it before and I know how fast it gets. Anywho, I need suggestions for a media front, like windows media center type of thing, because on a tv, it's rather hard to see the print on the screen and navigate through files and music. I appreciate anyone that can suggest and software.

Using relays to control lighting?

I have one Banner QS18VN6LV Retro-Reflective light interruption sensor, and one Banner QS18VN6D sensor with NPN Relay outputs. How could use the set to say, power on lighting when one is interrupted and power them off when another is interrupted? What I want to do is use them in my home theater, to power on the room lighting, projector and audio equipment and lower the screen when the one at the top of the steps is interrupted, and power off the room lighting, and turn on my ambient LED lighting when the one at the bottom is interrupted. The only problem this may have, is that the retro one is always sensing something till interrupted, and the non-retro one is only sensing something when interrupted.

Arduino Home Theater Screen Design

Hello Makers! I have been designing a home theater retractable screen housing that is arduino based. I want to use stepper motors for the added precision and will be playing with some minor resin/fiberoptics to decorate the front in a movie theater-esq manner. My concern is with the stepper motors. I would love to know if anyone has attempted a similar project. The speed of the descent/retraction is not all that important but consistency is another story. I also have some power concerns. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

av pros: how do I design an audio system for an *outdoor* theater?

I'm trying to come up with some specs for a mobile outdoor theater system and I could use some help with the audio work. If I have sound coming out of a DVD player, what components do I need? I was guessing a receiver, several speakers, and a subwoofer. What criteria are important for creating a system that sounds good outside? Can subwoofers even produce an effect when they're not inside? (I'm not concerned about weather-proofing as the system will be stored inside.)I also don't know whether it's worth going for surround sound or simple stereo, any advice? This thing would show movies to about 100 people. I have about $1500 for the audio system, so go nuts.. And thanks for any help!

I need a cheap way to connect up 3 pairs of external speakers to 3 different tv's, dosen't have to be surround sound?

I'm looking for the best low-cost way to wire external speakers to 3 different flat screen TV s, in 3 different rooms. I was thinking about a small pre-amp, but not sure it will make enough power. I also thought about using "Boom-Box" stereos in each case, but already have decent sets of speakers. Basically, I hope to find a small profile amplifier to make up for the lousy TV speakers!

Automata Weevil - Creating a Giant Moving Weevil for the Stage

Crazy internal gears and hidden winches went in to creating this amazing non-motorized spectacle for a stage production of The Difficulty of Crossing a Field. A team at Texas Performing Arts at the University of Texas at Austin (my alma mater!) came up with the elegant solution shown in the video above.    J.E. Johnson speaks more about it here. The video is awesome, but maybe next time the outstanding UT crew could make an Instructable of something like this?  C'mon, J.E., throw a girl a bone - it's an excellent educational process! Nonetheless, it's brilliant work, and I love the opportunity to see inside the finished weevil! p.s.  you may recognize someone else's name in the credit's too!

Lightning effects for a small venue stage?

I'm looking for DIY ideas for creating some lightning on stage at a small venue.  The venue is called "The Laboratory" so you can see where the inspiration for the idea comes from.  It needs to be impressive and easily visible but self-contained and safe enough to be operated by a run of the mill stage hand.  Any suggestions are welcomed, but i was thinking along the lines of a large van de graff in a spark cage of some sort or something along those lines.  I also have to take things like size, cost, maintenance, and complexity into account. I am not an amateur but I have never attempted any true high voltage projects.  Any questions or suggestions are welcome.  Thanks for the help!

Building ideas for a onstage train? Answered

My high school is doing Hello Dolly and if possiblelwould like a train to be brought on stage, does anyone have ideas on how to do that? I have a couple but I'm having trouble bring all of it to one idea. I had an idea you can make hand turnable axles and gears for the wheels, other stuff for the smokestack, I was thinking maybe corflute for the body, but its really just chaos in my head right now. Any suggestions?  It needs to be fairly lightweight.  It would be nice to have workable wheels  And not a real smokestack obviously but the appearance of smoke and a whistle Maybe a back platform if at all possible that Dolly could jump on... Our stage is small. It has no special things about it and its roughly 20 by 30 feet. There are two backstage wings that are really just small hallways that let out into the audience, and those are about 20 feet long.  Our plays are all financed by the drama teacher herself so the less expensive the better as well.  If nothing comes up thats ok too. We have an alternative that can be used.

Some questions about A/V stuff (home theater)

Hi all! Hope I got the right place for this.  I figured that there's someone in this community who can help me. My A/V receiver is about to give up the ghost.  A number of channels no longer work, and the sound is pretty fuzzy.  I know I need to replace it. I've always been terrible with A/V stuff.  I'm not sure what direction to go as far as replacing it goes.  Here's my issue:  The room I have the receiver in is small, so I don't need a lot of oomph.  I also don't have a way to run wires to rear speakers without people tripping over them.  I've gone without rear sound for a long time now.  I've never seen a set of wireless speakers that are reliable, so that seems like a poor option. I can't really do a "home theater in a box" setup, because they don't have enough inputs to add all of my stuff.  The things that currently run through the receiver are my computer (which runs our TV through a tuner card), a wii, an xbox 360, and a dvd player.  None of them are HDMI.  I use RCA cables for everything. The other thing that looked interesting is a sound bar, as they can apparently replicate surround sound without the rear speakers, but they seem to have the same problem that the "theater in a box" packages have. I don't know anything about receivers.  For example, I don't know if it makes sense to use a 5.1 receiver if I'm only running R, L, and Center speakers from it. Anyway... I'm not looking for brands or models necessarily, but rather, setup suggestions.  What kinds of things should I be looking into?  I can't be the only person with this kind of problem. Any advice that some of you A/V gurus can offer would be greatly appreciated!  The cheaper the better, here... as I don't use it all that much.  :) Thanks!

What size lens should I get for my projector?

I found the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdJ1gZDb6gM And I want to make a $100 1280x800 projector. In the comment section in that video he says he used a 120mm fresnel lens for the back (Focusing the 100W LED to the 5.6" LCD) and a 220mm fresnel lens for the front (Focusing the LCD to the wall). I want to make sure that I get the right lens.  Here is the site I am probably going to buy from: http://www.bhlens.com/fresnel_lens.aspx I might even post an article that links to their site so I can get the lens for free. Lastly, I'd like to say that I want it to as small as possible (Hence the reason for getting a not-so-common 5.6" LCD instead of a common 7"). Please help me choose a lens that will allow for the smallest possible space between the LCD, lenses, and light. I will make an Instructable for this later on.

How to build an inflatable "brain" costume for stage - seeking ideas?

Hi all, a friend of mine asked me to help him design and build a costume for a stage show he's doing; he will be wearing a monster mask and needs an inflatable "brain" to suddenly inflate (note, he changes costumes every 5-10 minutes during the show so it's something that needs to be fairly portable and easy to change into). We tried using CO2 canisters with balloons, a good effect but not nearly big enough. I'm thinking about some kind of air pig with a valve that he can clip a connecting hose to. If anyone has done anything like this or has a good recommendation I'd love to hear! Many thanks, DAZU

Can I hook a home theater subwoofer to my cars stereo system?

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with an aftermarket Jensen VM9512 in-dash DVD receiver. Can I hook up my subwoofer (Sony SA-W2500) to the receiver and use it successfully? I don't want to buy another sub. What I have to work with is a long enough cable to connect the sub and the receiver and a 12-volt DC - AC inverter. I'm not sure if the 12-volt plug in the back of my Jeep is turned on and off with the ignition or not, but the subwoofer has an automatic on and off mode and the power inverter is just ether on or off. Help? :]

Is there any way to stream a DVD or a Blu Ray disc from a home theater player to a tablet PC?

Folks, I've searched and searched.  But wouldn't it be nice to be able to put a movie in to your Blu Ray player and stream it via either WiFi or Bluetooth TO your tablet. I'd like to be able to do this as tablets generally don't have HDMI jacks and if they do it's only to stream content FROM the tablet. I'd like to be able to sit in my recliner and watch a movie on a DVD or BR I already own, while my wife watches something else.  Developers take note;  I contacted the WiFi alliance and spoke to a fellow there who hadn't even thought of the idea. If someone comes up with an application and/or a device that would make this possible they could  make some serious income patenting it.  Just give me a free unit to evaluate if you do :).
