time travel

I heard on the radio today that TIME TRAVEL was possible. Itll only set you back 10 trillon $. You can only go forward in time but then you can go back if they make one that can go back in time in the future. (like mysterio) ooooooo-weeeeee-oooooooo edit:better grammer and puncuation and cool sound effect.

Is time travel theoretically possible? (I just watched Minute Men) :P

Question by joespicnictables   |  last reply

time travel? Answered

Well i have a theory, but don't know if it's right. according to timedilation, time will go slower for you if you get closer to light speed. if you want to completely travel around the earth with light speed, it would only take 40.074000 : 299.792.458 seconds, which is 0,13367247550970745234691661255868 seconds. so you would experience it as 1.3 seconds. but because time for you goes very, very, very slow at that moment, the 1.3 seconds could be more then a million years! so, here it comes: if you travel so fast that 'your' time goes very slow, then the actual time would be more then if you traveled at normal speed. is that right, or am i completely wrong?

I'm sure many of you are avid travelers, so why not make instructable travel guides to certain cities or regions of foreign countries, because I know there's lots of information like that online but just a starting point would be greatly appreciated. So this is my formal request. -Thank You very much

Gift ideas for travelers? Answered

I'm searching for some gift ideas for my parents.  They like to travel; to the caribbean and Germany mostly.  I figure it would be a good idea to get them something travel-related.  Stuff like portable scales (for weighing luggage), security door stops, mini first aid kits, water purifiers.  They stick to hotels when traveling so no camping or survival gear is really necessary. So, any clever ideas?

Evidence of Time Travel!

I'm not sure how I managed it, possibly it's a result of running the washing machine, tumble dryer and my coffee machine simultaneously, but I appear to be posting from seven and a quarter hours in the future. Check out the image below for proof... Or maybe it was csharyk's fault?  He's interested in woowoo tech, maybe he pulled me in after something he did elsewhere / elsewhen? Update: it's spreading!  (second image) (I think I'll move this thread to Bugs) (If it's important, I made that screenshot at about 10:13am, UK time)

Good travel tripod? Answered

Looking for a good travel tripod for cheap, i cant find very many in my specifications If i would get one it would hopefully be less than 12 inches when folded Can extend to a pretty high range (about waist height, or at least 4-5 feet) And preferably can clip to a backpack or other thing (optional) Weight is not a huge deal, so any weight is fine and be cheap :) less than 50 bucks most likely i dont care if it is a name brand one or not, it just needs to hold a camera stability doesnt have to be great also, i could probably clip some wight onto it if needed camera i will be using is over a pound, but just by 3 or 4 ounces- not a DSLR either so there is no added lens weight if i go telephoto Thanks!! I really appreciate it :)

Is there an easy way to identify routes between airports ?

I've had a fairly good look for a way of doing this, it might be the way I'm asking the question but.... I've been looking for a way to identify routes out of any given airport. I don't want to book flight with any specific airline, I want to explore possible routes, the way I want to take them, without having to enter my itenary in a dozen airline websites. Somewhere I can see say "Honolulu - Serves LA Sandiego New York, Calgary Paris....." "Manchester UK - serves Paris, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta....." Thanks for any tips ! Steve

New Years 08: How We Could Theoretically "Discover" Time Travel/ers

Well that forum on time travel got me thinking...How We Could "Discover" Time TravelWrite down, carve on stone, burn into our memory, tatoo on my back, or something, that if/when time travel comes into exsistence, someone needs to travel back in time to a specific time and date in our near future (Instructables Control Tower, New Years 2008 would be a good time/place). If everyone were to record this, eventually someone/s might do so, meaning that a time traveler might turn up at Instructables HQ on New Year's. I personally intend to attempt to do so, or at least get my future kids to:)Anyways, if a good number of people do exactly this, there might be quite a congregation at Instructables on New Year's. Or of course, no one might turn up at all...

Hitchhikers guide to.. The Earth!

So here's the idea. I've been thinking how cool it would be to do a collaboration and create a giant travel guide. But not just an ordinary travel guide, one written by all instructables members. We have enough people on this site that we could get a pretty good start on it. I think the idea would spread fairly quickly. For example, I would write a brief something or other about my state (North Carolina), and then a full length guide for Boone, the university town that I live in. I would include basic information like population, size, etc., and also where I like to eat, what kind of tourist attractions are here, why ASU beat Michigan, etc. Some one else could add to what I wrote, and someone else could add a guide for the Charlotte/Denver area, and so on. For another state/province someone would just add a new step, etc. I realize it wouldn't be an Instructable, in the strict sense, but it would be helpful nonetheless. Not to mention we could have a lot of fun with it.What do you all think? What do the Instructables staff think about something like this? (In light of the fact that this is not a step by step guide to any one thing)Let the discussion begin. =)

Why does a hotel shower seem to rinse off soap so much better than my home shower?

When I shower at a hotel, the soap always seems to rinse off very quickly. At home it takes a lot more rinsing. I'd say "softer water" except that our home water *is* quite soft.

Right, that's it for a while - I'm away on holiday tomorrow morning, a week in Devon.Beaches, buildings four times older than America, and the Eden Project.I may even get my kites flying! (Edit: No, I didn't. The beaches were too narrow, too crowded or too non-existent to fly from. The one decent beach we found for kiting (Slapton Sands) was windless the day we went) PhotosI've uploaded selected images to my Flickr account:http://www.flickr.com/photos/76333500@N00/sets/There are two sets there, the Steam Fair and the Eden project.Sorry, no stills of the Stirling engines (what was thinking??), just this video.

Pet Travel Kennel Into Doghouse

Hello everyone!  Finally made an account after using this site for over 5yrs because I'm hoping to find some advice. I have a big, plastic, dog-sized travel kennel (airplane kind).  Since my pet isn't using it anymore, thought I'd convert it into an outside doghouse seeing as though it's practically complete already.  To prevent rain from getting inside, I need to cover up the side & back barred "windows".  My 1st impulse was to replace the metal bars with wood, but rain would just leak in through the top.  Any thoughts on attaching a makeshift roof?  I've added a picture of it to help (the metal door has been removed).

Puzzling Travels of a Tom-Cat.

Here's a puzzle I came across recently.  I've changed the context to stop people googling the answer :- A big ginger tom-cat leaves his home at 8:00 one morning and goes trundling around the neighbourhood, pausing here and there to 'leave his calling-card', stopping for a brief nap or two in a particularly warm spot, walking along fences, running through unfriendly gardens (woof woof) and  finding a warm car bonnet in a garage at 6:00 in the evening for a rest.  Unfortunately, the owner shuts the garage door and the cat is trapped for the night. At 8:00 the next morning the garage door opens and the cat comes scooting out.  Over the course of the day he takes the exact same path he took the day before but in reverse.  He stops in different places, makes his mark in other places and takes his naps at different places along the way, arriving back at his own house at 6:00 in the evening for a well deserved meal. The question :- What is the likelihood that there will be a time and place along the route where he is at EXACTLY the same point on the route at EXACTLY the same time of day on both days?

Keith-Kid's version of: The Hitchhikers guide to.. The Earth!

I just read this forum topic, and wondered why it didn't go anywhere.I read all the negative and positive comments on it. I still think it is a great idea and a great way to get the community to work together even more.Quote from the original post: So here's the idea.I've been thinking how cool it would be to do a collaboration and create a giant travel guide. And I know there are tons of other sites like this. But here are a few of my points about why this would be a good idea:Great way to get the community even more unitedAlthough wiki...whatever it was is great, anyone can edit and erase stuff. Instructables has a very careful community that watches out for this sort of thing. Not to mention the higher quality that comes from an entire community that cares, not just one or two honest people out of 100 prankstersGreat way to learn about diffrent cultures and interact with them. Instructables has helped me a lot in my school work. I've learned a bit from UK from kiteman, and a lot of people know that I ask for a lot of homework help in the forums! My point is that this site is mainly a self improvement center, not just for a house or project, all these things just help improve ourselvesI'm thinking that each step could be a place. If there are a lot of things from one same place, there would be a couple of different steps. We could have an index in the intro that links to each country's steps. We could provide a bit of history, culture, society and Pictures!Ok now you can talk

San Francisco Trip

Heading to San Francisco in April for a family wedding and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on things to do.  I'm bringing my three little girls, 10, 8 and 6, so we will have to do some touristy things.  They would like to see Instructables and I don't know if that is possible.  Specifically I need to find a moderately priced hotel,  a restaurant in China town or any tips you might have.  I am from Chicago and know that sometimes Google doesn't work so great, like suggesting a restaurant or hotel that was just featured on the nightly news, and not for good reasons.  Thanks in advance for any help. Laptop batteries + Solar panels = Backup travel battery

Here's the thing. I have had this idea for a while now to use some old laptop batteries to make a larger battery cell and some PowerFilm solar chargers to charge them. I have 10 good laptop batteries and 10 PowerFilm AA solar chargers to use. I travel a lot and would like to combine all of these to make a decent travel battery capable of charging an iPhone, iPod, iPad and/or camera batteries as needed.  Seeking some guidance to make this happen. Will be posting an Instructable when I'm fully capable of building this.

I think I figured out time travel!!!.....sort of :(

I think I stumbled upon the secret to time travel thanks to the thoughts provoked by a previous topic. The secret to it is storage!! as of now time travel to go backwards is to try and get to a place that no longer exists. its like trying to watch last sundays football game but you didn't hit recored on the VCR. As I see it if we want to ever suceed at time travel we need a way to recored and regenerate/exactly simulate life. right now time travel is only possible in minute viewings on recorded video. in order to fully exsperience and interact with life as it was we would need to invent a way to recored the planet and store it for future simulations, ala star trek halodeck. we need to come up with a way to capture life or at least a 3D true to life recording of it. This seems a daunting task but if it were ever achievable we would the be able to experience previous times. if maybe or AI abilities improved we could then apply this to future time travel.... come up with a way to extract information from the recordings we have to generate a logically sound hypothetical projection of future existence. ya, ya.... I know I'm retarded..... but it makes sence to me :p

could we actually travel through space?

OK, earlier today i was watching sci fi science on-demand and it was the episode where he discussed hitting mars with several astroids and i thought of something: what if instead of using a normal rocket, why not use the only thing that we know of that is more powerful than a nuclear reaction? anti-matter! no, it is not a myth, CERN has been harvesting the stuff for decades, yet all they have is about 10 pounds or so. most likely less. in theory, we could make a two compartment chamber with an air lock between the two chambers, and in each chamber put a few particles of a natural substance and its anti- substance in the separate chambers with a remote module to open the airlock separating the chambers while we are several hundred miles away, with two possible, reasonable theories:1)the chamber skyrockets through the atmosphere and into the great unknown of the skies and stars 2) we create a new grand canyon in the middle of nowhere, harvest the profits of the tourist attraction and try again until we get it right, if we fail 2) then we have several hundred grand canyons!(whew!!!!!!!!!!)

I'd take the time to look it up myself but I'm busy arguing with someone right now. Does sound travel farther in cool air or warm air.  Use 50 deg. for cool and 100 deg. for warm air.  I don't care about speed just distance of similar sounds.  For sound use something like a normal speaking level? So scientists which sound would go farther?
