Old LCD Backlight...What to do...

I have a typical CCFL-lit LCD backlight that I tore out of an ancient, dying laptop with an ancient, dying screen. The backlight is roughly 25.5cm x 19 cm (9 7/8" x 7 1/2") and about .5cm (1/4") thick. When around 18VDC is applied to the inverter, the whole rectangle lights up with a perfectly even, white, light. I've been trying to come up with something cool to do with it. So far, these ideas have included: -With a piece of protective plastic, a small lightbox for tracing or viewing negatives/slides -Mounted over a desk for a really cool lamp -Illuminated sign Does anyone have any brilliant ideas for what to build with this? A project worthy of the geekiness or the materials?

Mounting an LCD Monitor

Hello everyone! I am working on project that involves mounting a 19in LCD monitor onto a board. The monitor has 4 threaded holes in the back for mounting onto an arm or wall mount. I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of screws to use or has any advice on properly and securely mounting the monitor. The monitor is a Westinghouse 19" LCD. The whole project is going to be a small entertainment center for my monitor. I am going to attach speakers and accent lighting. I am doing this for a class project and drafting it in Vectorworks. *If anyone is interested in looking at the plans I will send them to you; however please don't redistribute them. They will be in DWG format. GC

Old laptop screen to digital signage?

I've been browsing around the site and see plenty about converting old whole laptops into picture frames but I'm hoping to make a digital sign to play video and such and am, so far, unable to figure out how to change the projects to work for my purposes. I have an old laptop monitor that is no longer attached to its original unit due to manufacturing defect and I hope to convert it to a digital sign for the front window of the student union office at my college.  I thought it best to ask here before trying to convince the electrical engineering class. xD Thoughts? Insights? Links to instructables that might assist?

External smartphone Monitor using old laptop LCD display.

Hi there, I am currently working on a project on reverse engineering. I wish to attempt at somehow using an old laptop lcd, as an external display for my smartphone. As an amateur electrician and computer programmer I would love it if someone could direct me and tell me which goals I have to accomplish to make that happen. I understand that the signals coming out of an lcd display are different then on a cell phone so I had found a control board that will transpose the signal into a VGA signal which can then be directed to a computer. But is there a way to send the signal to a usb port for a smartphone to plug into. Granted a program, software and drivers for the monitor ets would need to be created but that aside, could something like that be possible? Please indulge me. Thanks for your time.

Basically i want to use an old LCD monitor as a tv... the monitor only has DVI and RGB in the form of a 15 pin HD sub D connector. I was wondering if anyone has discovered a cheap way to hack it.

Is there a way to convert an old laptop LCD screen into a useable monitor or even tv?

I took the LCD screen out of an old Dell laptop. The connection to the lcd screen appears custom to dells. It has a connection that plugs directly into the video card in the motherboard and is thus useless. Is there any way to create (or buy) some sort of adapter so that the end could be either vga or rca and would thus be useful?

Old LCD Monitor converted to a light panel - how do I keep it lit?

I picked up an Acer LCD monitor that has a fault in the panel. I've stripped the panel off and want to use the remaining LED-lit screen and diffusers as an illumination panel. The panel turns on fine, but when the control board senses that there is no video source attached, it shuts the backlight down. Is there a way of 'spoofing' an input (it has VGA and HDMI ports) so that the control board thinks a monitor is connected and keeps the backlight on?

LCD Swappems

Hello creative tech people, This is my first post so I hope I got it in the right section, and I did a lot of research before creating this post. I've been researching this for a bit, and I've gotten a sudden fascination with LCDs (mostly of the full color display variety) and I've been planning on making  custom tablet style PCs based on old laptops just for fun and experimentation but in my planning I hit a bit of a snag in regards to the screen. Since much to my dismay they weren't swappable and relied on a controller intertwined in the motherboard. There's also the inverter which I'm not sure how relevant it is to the project, This is a real issue for me because I wanted to use a variety of screens from big ones to tiny ones from smartphones or mp3 players. I was wondering three things: 1. Can you make a monitor connect to a different motherboard through the magic of soldering? 2. (if #1 is a yes) will the controller handle the different signal or does each one have a different driver format and all that aggravating frippery? 3. Would taking apart a standard vga flat screen monitor and using that instead of a laptop screen avoid the issue altogether? Or would it bring up new problems?

Convert old LCD monitor to digital photo frame

Can I turn a laptop LCD into a VGA monitor? Answered

My old Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop's monitor stopped working. I figured out that it's not the LCD itself, it's the connector on the motherboard of the laptop. So I took the LCD off and kept the bottom half to hook into a VGA monitor and use like a regular computer. BUT: I got to thinking- could I somehow convert the LCD to have a VGA hookup and then just plug it into the VGA port on the laptop somehow or would it be so expensive and complex that it isn't worth it?

Problem with LCD backlight

Hello everybody,  I'm here to ask a question I'm not able to solve on my own. I'm not good at programming, so it may be a silly question, but I can't find a solution. I'm building an Arduino based humidity and temperature monitoring system, with three DHT-11 sensors and a display to show readings from them. I'd like to be able to toggle LCD's backlight on with a pushbutton and have the code switch it off after a while. I can't  figure out how to make Arduino do it. All I could make till now is Arduino switching backlight ON at the beginning of the code regardless of the buton being pressed or not.  Here is the code I wrote, I bolded the part relative to the pushbutton. Can anyone help me, please? #include "DHT.h"                    // include DHT sensor library code #include           // include lcd display library code LiquidCrystal lcd(12, 11, 5, 4, 3, 2);     // Initialize lcd on these pins #define DHTPIN A0          // sensor1 1 #define DHTPIN2 A1         // sensor 2 #define DHTPIN3 A2         // sensor 3 // Uncomment whatever sensor type you're using! #define DHTTYPE DHT11   // DHT 11 //#define DHTTYPE DHT22   // DHT 22  (AM2302) //#define DHTTYPE DHT21   // DHT 21 (AM2301) // Initialize DHT sensor for normal 16mhz Arduino DHT dht(DHTPIN, DHTTYPE); DHT dht2(DHTPIN2, DHTTYPE); DHT dht3(DHTPIN3, DHTTYPE); #define light_button 8 #define backlight_pin 13 int val; int state; void setup() {   Serial.begin(9600);   lcd.begin(16, 2); // set up the LCD's number of columns and rows:   dht.begin(); // enable DHT sensors   pinMode(light_button, INPUT);   pinMode(backlight_pin, OUTPUT);   state = 0; } void loop() {   val = digitalRead(light_button);     Serial.println(val);        if(light_button != state){       digitalWrite (backlight_pin, HIGH);     }     else {       digitalWrite (backlight_pin, LOW);     }         // READING SENSOR 1   // Reading temperature or humidity takes about 250 milliseconds!   // Sensor readings may also be up to 2 seconds 'old' (its a very slow sensor)   float h1 = dht.readHumidity();   float t1 = dht.readTemperature(); // Read temperature as Celsius   float hi = dht.computeHeatIndex(t1, h1); // Compute heat index lcd.setCursor(5, 0);           // Print values from sensor 1 on lcd   lcd.print("Teca 1"); lcd.setCursor(0,1);   lcd.print("Umidita': ");   lcd.print(h1);   lcd.print("%"); delay(3000);                 // Show humidity value for 3 seconds lcd.setCursor(0,1);          // Switch to temperature visualization   lcd.print("Temperat: ");   lcd.print(t1);   lcd.print("C"); delay(3000);                // Show temperature value for 3 seconds // READING SENSOR 2   float h2 = dht2.readHumidity();      // Read humidity   float t2 = dht2.readTemperature();   // Read temperature as Celsius     float hi2 = dht.computeHeatIndex(t2, h2);  // Compute heat index   lcd.setCursor(5, 0);            // Print values from sensor 2 on lcd   lcd.print("Teca 2");   lcd.setCursor(0,1);   lcd.print("Umidita': ");   lcd.print(h2);   lcd.print("%"); delay(3000);                      // Show humidity value for 3 seconds lcd.setCursor(0,1);              // Switch to temperature visualization   lcd.print("Temperat: ");   lcd.print(t2);   lcd.print("C"); delay(3000);                    // Show temperature value for 3 seconds // READING SENSOR 3     float h3 = dht3.readHumidity();   float t3 = dht3.readTemperature();      // Read temperature as Celsius     float hi3 = dht.computeHeatIndex(t3, h3);    // Compute heat index     lcd.setCursor(5, 0);                      // Print values from sensor 3 on lcd   lcd.print("Teca 3");   lcd.setCursor(0,1);   lcd.print("Umidita': ");   lcd.print(h3);   lcd.print("%"); delay(3000);                      // Show humidity value for 3 seconds lcd.setCursor(0,1);                // Switch to temperature visualization   lcd.print("Temperat: ");   lcd.print(t3);   lcd.print("C"); delay(3000);                      // Show temperature value for 3 seconds }

Hey, let's invent this immediately!!!

OK folks, how hard can this possibly be?Yeah, yeah, I know. Probably REALLY hard. But if we all team up and combine our gray matter, can't we overcome any technological obstacle with our collective geekiness?I want to see an affordable, open-source doodad that can turn an LCD from a dead laptop into a working external flatscreen monitor. It should accept digital & analog signals and allow us all to hack up beautiful screens ready to embed in our brilliant projects, while keeping LCD's out of the landfill.punish3r valiantly went down this road: https://www.instructables.com/id/Laptop-Converted-to-2nd-Monitor/but then ended up "cheating" (his words, not mine) by using software that does most of the work (plus he started with a functional laptop!). Discussions I've read usually end with "you'd have to buy a controller for that specific LCD, which would cost almost as much as a regular flatscreen so what's the point?"I reject this (resting on my laurels of ignorance)! If a controller truly exists for every LCD on earth, don't they share lots of common features? And if so, can't we come up with a generic one that could be programmed or dip-switched or soldered or otherwise persuaded to play nice with any LCD on the playground? Even the weird one by the monkey bars who smells like cheese? (Sorry; stretched my metaphor too far and it broke)I envision a circuit board with PC or even TV "in," an amazingly versatile multi-pin adaptor or cable that would replace or connect to that flimsy little ribbon cable sprouting from the LCD. The board would have a USB plug for programming, and a chip smart enough to remember what you tell it. Some smart person will write a nifty app that talks to the board, and vast legions of techies across the globe (or rogue employees of the LCD manufacturers, perhaps?) will upload specs for all of their LCD panels that will be used by other smart people to create a profile for any given panel that can be dropped onto the board. It would have to be really low-cost to make sense, but I envision a cottage industry: package it up as a kit, or we could build goofy-looking monitors out of e-waste and sell them!Somebody else could probably strengthen the argument in favor of this invention by providing a list of terrible LCD ingredients that would be re-purposed out of our trash heaps and water supplies and cat food... I'll leave that up to the experts. What do you think, folks? Is this a pipe dream, or a viable idea? Either way, let's do it!(and if anybody manages to make one, I get dibs on a prototype!)Thanks for reading!Mike

Using a USB monitor as a standalone monitor for webcam?

So...can this be done? I have a Mimo USB monitor that I'd like to connect to a webcam (sans computer) to use as a viewing monitor. Basically the camera will be used for tele/micro/macro purposes and the image would be sent directly to the monitor. An example would be to attach the camera to a microscope and then use the monitor to view the image, rather than peering into the viewfinder. All this would be battery-powered so that it's usable anywhere. However, I don't have a the slightest clue how to bypass the whole computer thing, as I can't find any info on how the USB monitor works. The Mimo is actually a touchscreen with a builtin video card, so it should be capable of some cool hacking. I have an old usb webcam available, as well as a tiny spycam with RCA out. Questions: Can the USB camera or RCA camera be connected to the Mimo without the use of a computer? Has anyone seen this done before? Anyone have any links/suggestions/experience with this idea?
