Softening Candle Wax (lost wax casting)

Well, I made my first lost wax casting yesterday using lead, and a Plaster of Paris mold. It worked great, except that I didn't have enough lead. But, after searching on the great web, I realized that the wax I used was much harder than what the sculptors use. Why is this? Is it a different type of wax? I searched Google, and couldn't find anywhere to get the wax I needed. Maybe I typed in the wrong name. I don't know. I'd much rather use my own wax, as my mom has a stockpile of large-er sized candles that softened and deformed in the Florida sun. How would I soften it, other than heating it in water? Is that water method thing how they normally do it? I'm really into melting metal, and want to do more casting, so can someone help?

3d wax printer

Is there a wax 3d wax printer on the market that uses reusable wax (like candle wax) or is it possible/cheaper to just make one? I want to use this for lost wax moldings and I want to be able to reuse most if not all the wax used to make the mold. Any information would be great.

Whats a good base for a candle wax sculpture? What does wax stick to best? Answered

I want to make wings out of candle wax, so far I've made samples a few feathers, but i'm unsure what to use as a base for the wing. The biggest feather is about 40 cm (16 inches), so i want the wings to be fairly big.

Advice on lost wax casting

I am looking at the cheapest way to begin casting pewter with the lost wax casting or with creating rtv silicone molds and it looks like dental wax is generally the same as jeweller's wax. I would like to know if this product looks suitable for carving for lost wax casting: http://dentala2z.co.uk/PRE10379/en I would of course melt it to make blocks to carve from. It looks like it would do the job, carving wax seems to be really expensive in whatever form. Im also looking at using silicone and corn starch. thank you

Edison Wax Cylinder Recordings

I'm not sure this is the correct category, but I didn't see one specifically for audio endeavors! I know there were early recordings on wax, and later vinyl records, but I wondered if anyone ever went back and made cylinders from vinyl and tried recording on them. Does anyone know where I can find out more about this? I'm be interested in trying to make higher definition recording cylinders for some fun :)

Homemade wax paper wrappings? Answered

Hello everyone! This is the first time I've used this feature on Instructables, so here goes. :) I'm trying to recreate vintage sweet wrappers for a friend who will use them in a film he's making for uni, and I wondered if I could somehow impregnate the wrappers in wax to make them "chocolate proof" so I could let a friend re-live times from long ago. :) I'd be using standard printer paper and inkjet ink, would this survive the waxing? Also how would I coat the paper in a layer of wax thin enough not to crack when the package is assembled? I was also planning on heat sealing the edges wsing a warmed metal tooling to first fold the paper into a tube, then crimp the edges. Thanks for any help :) (Sorry if this is in the wrong section, as its technically a wax and paper mess-afound i think it's closer to Art than anything else. :) )

How can I remove candle wax from a concrete floor?

A while back I spilled roughly one candle's-worth of melted wax on my rough concrete shop floor. It's not causing any problems, but it's ugly and feels weird when I step on it. I've thought of a wire brush and a lot of heat, neither of which are really practical. Any suggestions for removing it?

lost wax casting: what material is the best for pouring metal into?

So I made a rad Yoda wax figurine recently and I'm looking into converting him into a aluminum via the lost wax casting method. I've seen some other instructables on casting the metal into plaster of paris, but that doesn't seem to preserve the very fine details that I want. There are a few other methods I've seen on other forums, like mixing fine sand with plaster and making a ceramic mold...I have even wackier ideas like using fireproof cement, but I haven't seen anything online to support using it...what other ideas can you think of that don't involve expensive investment powders I have to buy online?

How do I heat an exposed wire to cut candles?

Three random questions on this piece of radio guts! (ID-ing parts and the mysterious wax) Answered

So i opened this old Crown Japan stereo and found somethings i've seen before, but never had the initiative to ask their raison d'être (why are they there?). 1 - What is the blocky component with a colored screwdriver notch on them? 2 - Why do they always use this specifics pots for the tuners of radios? 3 - Why do they apply wax (often in generous amounts) over some components? (i know all 3 sound pretty noob, but i had to ask someone)

Rubbing compound, polshing compound and paste wax? Answered

I wanted to prevent rust buildup on some of my tools. Especially on my drill bits. I have been reading a few and mostly found out that Johnson's paste wax are what other people use to prevent rust. Does a rubbing compound alone will prevent rust or does it need to be finished with a paste wax? I do notice that the rubbing compound is mostly to level or smoothen the surface. Just wondering if it also has the ability to prevent rust. Thank you.

Where to buy Candle (parafin) wax on the cheap? Answered

I want to make 3 candles featured in Weissensteinburg's Instructable, How to make Candles. I live in England so I cannot buy candles from 'Joanne's' as Weissenstein did. I am, however, using the same moulding method as he does, so the ammount of wax that I need is around 3/4 of a pound. Mabey 1lb for safety. And no, I can't use eBay or any other online website, because I do not have an account and so I would have to ask my parents to buy it for me, which would defeat the point really... Any tips?

How to cut wax master out of silicone mold without damaging it?

I am planning to cast jewellery by generally sand casting with wax models, though I would like to make more permanent silicone mold backups if something happens to the original wax master. My plan would be to pour or press silicone onto the wax master and get it out after the silicone has set. The only easy way I know of doing this is to cut a line all around the silicone mold to retrieve the wax master. I know other people seem to do this. I can't see how you could do this though without accidentally scratching the wax master inside?

BBC plays steampunk band's wax record with fuse wire and mint tin.

Steampunk band The men That Will Not be Blamed for Nothing have released a new single. On wax. The BBC heard about this, and built a machine to play it.  For techies, their build is not exactly... good. The cylinder was recorded by Poppy Records with a mixture of digital computer techno-wizardry and a machine cobbled together from a video recorder and old arcade games. Played on a properly-built machine, the recordings are surprisingly pleasant to listen to.
