Alternative ways to create a one-way mirror?

Hello, I'm creating a video installation with rear-projection. I want the viewer to see his reflection and the projection so I was thinking of half-silvering Mylar or acetate to create a screen. I also thought of mixing aluminum powder with a clear medium and painting it on however, no luck finding that in Canada.  My only issue with silvering the screen is that it is so large (10x5ft) that I don't know how to go about heating it up when I pour the solution over it.  Looking for suggestions for other materials as well as solutions to these issues. Thanks!

a way to harden styrofoam? Answered

I have been working on a metal mechanical iris for a while now and have been looking for a few things, but one thing that has me scratching my head is having a base, or cam wheel. its just a circle with grooves in it. i decided to use plain styrofoam for this so it will be lightweight and easy to cut, but when i tried it the cam wheel easily crumbled with enough force applied. is there any way to harden styrofoam with a spray or something of that sort? it needs to be somewhat slidey, so it can move well, so nothing like a rubber spray.

Two-way hinges

My wife and I bought an 80s designed house that's not that well designed. We keep one of the litter boxes for our cats in the garage, which is accessed from the inside through the laundry room; and we want to install cat doors so our aging felines can pass through the doors easily to get to it, while keeping the draft from the garage out of the family room. The interior door (between family and laundry rooms) is a standard hollow core and the exterior door (between laundry and garage) is fire code rated solid wood door.  We tried a standard top-hinged door with the cats already, at our old apartment, and the cats didn't take to it, so we we're hoping to do french doors, since they know how to get through normal doors pretty well. But we're kinda stuck on our lack of knowledge about hinge designs; we need hinges that swing both ways. Has anyone out there successfully completed such a design/installation and would be willing to share pics and secrets?

Fishing the traditional way

A while ago I had a very bad day of fishing in terms of catching something for my frying pan or freezer.Same story for the old bloke sitting a few meters away from me.So we decided to pass some time with useless chats about our previous record fish we caught. While the old bloke changed bait I noticed that he did not have a hook at the end of the line.....What is that contraption and how do you catch fish with it?Old bloke laughed and said he goes hunting a lot too and always keeps the antlers from deer and such.Instead of a hook he used a round and pointy bar with a little notch slightly off the middle.Couldn't figure out how this possibly could hook a fish, so got a bigger laugh for it this time :("Make a loose fist, put it in and then pull on the line." he said and I was dumb enough to assume it would not work :(Figure it out by getting two bleeding pricks...Fish swallows the "stick" inside the bait and one there is some pull one pointy end will always get stuck. The other moves until there is no room to move anymore and the fish is spiked up for good.Only downside is that one you get a fish too big it might not grab - bad luck then LOLThis approach instead of steel hooks reminded me of the bamboo fishing poles my grandfather used to make.Be it for eel, trout, carp or even from the boat for pollock and sardine - he loved his bamboo.Even made me my fisrt fly fishing rod from a piece of bamboo :)The old guy however had more than hand made rods or horn needles as hooks. When his hands were still as good as his eyes he even made flies from these horn sticks! He explained the process to me but I never had the patience for normal flies and doing this with horn sticks and estimating how big the biggest fish might be while making sure it is neither too heavy nor fails to float...What I really liked about this otherwise wasted fishing day was the stories I got from the old man."You don't need fancy or oversensitive gear to fish, a safety pin and some packing coad do just fine if you are hungry!"Best story was how he caught a 2m gummy shark with a hand line meant to catch some sardines for bait.I could really his 3 hour struggle to get the thing on board LOLWhat are your most successfull old school or just plain weird catches with something a real sports fisherman would not even touch to cast?

great idea but can't seem to post

No idea how to post this......do you have a Klein 9 way (or more) screwdriver but have lost the tips?......standard 1/4" tips are too short to replace the double ended ones, and even then they do not have the retaining pins that hold them in the tool.....     simple but brilliant solution......      acquire a small magnet close (but smaller than) the diameter of one of the too short tips......attach the magnet to the end of the tip and insert it into the tools sleeve.....remove the tip and the magnet is now permanently inside the sleeve....       now you can use almost any 1/4" tip from your other tool kits (sweet, if you use an odd tip on a regular basis).....and a bonus, the new tip is now slightly magnetic.......         not sure where you would acquire the magnets, I scavenged them from a dollar store "magnetic dart board" darts....

Time-Lapse shows the beauty of the galaxy we live in.

I recently purchased a Canon EOS DSLR.This video made it painfully obvious what I need to be doing with it!This gorgeous video is a compilation of shots taken with a Canon EOS-5D every 20 seconds over about nine hours at a star party in Fort Davis, Texas. It's a humbling sight. The Canon was equipped with a fisheye lens (an EF 15mm f/2.8 lens) and powered with an external battery to capture all that goodness. The more interesting part is the replacement anti-alias filter the photographer, William Castleman, used: The Canon's stock AA filter blocks out certain red wavelengths to achieve a "more desirable" skin tone, but if it's replaced with a filter that lets those wavelengths in, you've got yourself a camera capable of shooting a galaxy, as seen here, even if we can't see it with the naked eye.Its also great to know about the filter, I am off to google more into that now!Check it out on VimeoVia Gizmodo

VAWT a new way to wind generation

Guys need help to realise its feasiblity and pros & cons. This project will comprise of a renewable energy source which is controlled by TI msp430 controller by closed loop system. This renewable energy source will use a magnetically levitated vertical axis wind turbine with single phase permanent magnet alternator made by our team. There will be 3 stationary wind guide vanes/flaps of concave shape on the outer periphery of turbine. These vanes will be controlled by dc gear motor for constant wind flow and protection against high speed winds. Using perturb & observe MPPT algorithm on DC-DC boost converter, constant DC voltage for GRID integration is made. A lower energy Bluetooth module will send data on user computer about whole system parameter, hence making the whole system to be smart and hence data is saved in database. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5hYLjhO9U

how can I cut a keyway without a mill? Answered

I need to cut a (roughly) 3mm keyway in a piece of 10mm brass rod and I don't have access to a mill. I do have access to most hand tools, though. Can anyone recommend a way I can cut the keyway? I'm not too fussed about accuracy, as long as its within +/- 1.5mm of the nominal width I'm happy. Also, if it matters, it will be about 5mm deep.

How to build your own soccer/football referee communication system?

Hi, if you are a soccer/football fan, then you have seen soccer referees in UEFA, EPL, and World Cup matches wearing and using a communication system to talk with one another. An example of this is here: http://www.crescentcomms.com/ A similar system is offered specifically for dental offices: here (NOTE: actual that website shows a lot of interesting equipment) The problems associated with this system are: -Too expensive -Too many wires -Too many pieces of equipment -Too heavy to wear (a transmitter is strapped to your shorts as you run around) -Uncomfortable to use as you are running and sweating People can build their own cheaper systems by buying 2-way walkie talkies, headsets, batteries, arm straps, etc. off the shelves.  But it retains all the drawbacks. What I really envision are the following: -Secure communication (i.e. set channel/frequency) for at least 4 referees -Open communication (i.e. no need to push to talk) -Each referee wears a bluetooth headset like this one made by Platronics -Adjustable ear pieces as needed -Need to work for at least three hours straight at one time -Ideally powered by small lithium batteries (like those used for watches) -Ideally power source should be rechargeable or somehow be able to plug into USB or outlet for recharging As you can see, I really would like to see something built that can eliminate the wires, the weight, and discomfort.  Keep it super simple to use and equip.  If anyone has suggestions, please offer them.

How does light react to one way glass?

I hope this is the right forum for my question. Earlier today I was watching a show on Netflix (Mythbusters) and they were using some one way glass. I was just wondering how light behaves towards this. For example if I used some one way glass in the side of a computer would I be able to see the light from LED's? The LED's would reflect on the mirrored side, wouldn't they? So would the light be magnified when I look through the clear side? I hope what I was trying to say was understandable.

Two way intercom design for tele-operated robot

Hi,I'm working on building a tele-operated robot that will be able to send signals generated by moving your arms and mapping these to the robot arms. I'm looking to add an intercom system to the robot that would allow for the operator to speak into a microphone and come out a speaker on the robot and a microphone on the robot so send audio that someone speaking to the robot generates to the operator.I've currently been looking into VOX circuits and walkie talkies but all walkie talkies I have seen require both sides to use a headset. It would be fine for the operator of the robot to use a headset but it would be better for the speaker and microphone on the robot to be out loud. Does anyone have ideas about how this type of system could be implemented? Could I replace the PTT button on a walkie talkie with a voice activated switch kit available online?Thank you.

Objective-oriented Contests

On Instructables, contests have tended to had very limited specifications beyond a general theme they work to. I propose this trend be broken in favor of something a bit more actively competitive: hold contests where the objective is set and have people compete to meet that stated goal as set by the contest host. The parameters that entries would be judged upon would be laid out in the briefing, as would any material or cost limitations. Holding competitions in this manner would entice people to competitively build something to meet the requirement the host sets and to do their best to hone their project to succeed in the relevant parameters. I think this would be a nice change from the chaotic randomness of current contests where there isn't much competition among entries, besides wooing people for votes to win finalist positions.

Possible way to help the economy?

So, I was thinking for a few days, and have came up with a few questions, and some possible answers(solutions?) 1) Companies and buisnesses are loosing employees because they can't pay them, or employees are quiting because they aren't payed enough, and therefor, companies are loosing more money, correct? Well, what if people volunteer to work at buissnesses(for this example, we'll use a restaurant) to help out. Obviously, they wold have to be qualified, and still be "hired" In doing so, companies would more help, better work efficiency and hopefully, more buissness(more money) When they get more income, they can pay their volunteers and both the buissness, and the (now paid) vounteers make more income. 2)How are we loosing money? I never really understood how we're loosing money as a nation, and why the government can't make more. Who's to say that we can't print more money, and give it to people, and companies, and even other countries? 3) People can't buy products because of the price. Companies are raising prices, which means more people can't buy products. If companies and buisnesses were to lower prices, people would be able to buy the products, thus companies would make money. Maybe at a slower rate, but eventually companies would have more money to pay employees, and more money to hire and pay more employees. Employment rates would possibly go up, and so would the economy. What are your guys thoughts?
