Whistle for Tea Kettle? Instructable anywhere?

Hoping for help from the bright and zany folks here. I'm going to ruin my beloved Revere stainless steel kettle. I keep putting it on the stove to boil water, getting sidetracked by a project and forgetting about it until the water boils dry and I am seriously cooking that metal. You see there is no whistle to remind me it has come to the boil! Has anyone created a homemade whistle for a tea kettle or would someone consider creating such an instructable to help out this poor soul? My kettle and I would thank you!

Whistling blades on wind direction weather vane

I have a propeller with four blades that acts as a wind direction weather vane. What I would like is for the propeller to make a whistling noise when it is rotated by the wind. Someone told me if I put a small hole or a slit in each of the blades it will make a whistling noisy which should change with wind speed. Can anyone tell me what size hole/slit I would need? Also at what angle would the slit have to be? Or can you tell me any other way to get a whistle from the blades when the wind is blowing? The blades are metal and about 200mm long (400mm overall diameter).

Whistling key fob helps finding misplaced keys

I am notorious in misplacing my kes. Years ago you could buy a key fob that helped finding misplaced keys. You would whistle and the fob  replied  with a pinging or whistled tune after one or two seconds. The idea was great, but the quality of those things used to be poor. Can someone re-create such design in miniature format?

Oscilloscope PSU whining noise?

My oscilloscope is a Philips PM3055. It's a CRT type with a modular internal design, one PCB is the PSU, one is the front panel, a few are TTL, etc. When I try to turn it on the screen is blank and the PSU makes a whining/whistling noise, and does not function. The whining persists regardless of connection to other boards and mains ground. (mains ground is normally not connected to the PSU, but there's a connector) I have found no bulging/leaking capacitors (though I have no way of testing capacitance) or other visible damage, except for cracked plastic on the front panel. But that's merely cosmetic. Replacing the PSU is not an option, since the scope is old and obsolete. Neither is buying a new scope. I am broke. All help greatly appreciated! If you help me fix it, I might just send you one of those fancy patches. I can only provide cellphone-camera quality pictures at the moment, and for that I am sorry. [Edit / update] I contacted Advance Product Services, And they sent me the complete service manual for the scope, free of charge. Those guys are awesome!

Any ideas for an "in mouth" voice mangler (NOT electronic)? Answered

I want to make scary inhuman sounds as part of a costume. So I can't hold things up to my face or use any electronics. Has anyone got any ideas? (Other than me ending up with a sore throat from screeching unnatural sounds.) I'm thinking of something like a whistle I can bite/hold with my lips and blow through but whistling isn't very scary and most whistles don't work in reverse. Or like when you trap a blade of grass taut in between your thumbs and blow, but would need to be "manufactured" so I don't need to hold my hands up.

Bamboo wind chimes/ flutes

In the older Robin Hood movie with Kevin Costner, when Robin, Azeem, and Duncan were running from the Sheriff's men, they ran into Sherwood forest.  The forest was reported to be 'Haunted'.  Partway in they heard strange sounds which were discovered to be what I believe bamboo wind chimes that were also flutes or whistles that were activated by the wind.   Anyone know how these could be made?   The main problem I see is that the flute/whistle needs to sound at low wind speed. I have never figures this part out.    Thanks.

But when I try Chrome on another machine it won't resolve. https://www.instructables.com/id/Transform-a-ballpoint-pen-into-a-survival-whistle-/ None of my friends could view it, and when I tried the URL in Firefox and in IE (and Chrome on a different machine), it says: "Sorry, we just can't find that one! -   We're sorry, the URL https://www.instructables.com/id/Transform-a-ballpoint-pen-into-a-survival-whistle-/ is either incorrect or no longer available. Noise or Music?

The "Bose" sound system is based on chamber resonance like that of musical instruments. This is the difference between a whistle and a flute. The mouth piece of a trumpet is raw without its additional plumbing. The noise of a piezo-electric sounder is raw, but chambered to resonate...better. A trumpet is basically an acoustical waveguide device. Consider this and lets see if you can "WOW!" the crowds with your sounds. The trumpet mellows the sound of the mouth piece by reflecting the sound repetitively off the inside walls of the horn. The angle is low so the acoustic wave reflects many times along the length. What works for you?

Following along in the last post about the wild world of water, let's see what other natural oddities our Earth has for us. There's a strange sound coming from the ocean, they're calling it a "Bloop." The earth is known for whistling caves, and plopping mud puddles, thunder and earth quakes, so we know the earth is one vocal creature. But the bloop is new, and as of yet unknown. This is what we know: "Although the sound matches the profile of a living animal, it is much louder than any known creature can produce. Any creature that could produce such a sound would have to be many times larger than the largest whale."The story is here. What do you think it is?_BG\\via neatorama\\

XP "Classic" search in Windows 7? Answered

It took a lot to make me change from XP, but I do like Windows 7 which I'm now running on a couple of machines.   However . . . The thing I miss is the 'classic' explorer search function which gave a no-nonsense way of finding any set of files on your computer (indexed or not) with proper wildcarding and various other settable criteria. OK, Microsoft search V4 (or whatever it's called) has all sorts of bells and whistles, but I'm finding it unwieldy to use and find myself opening a DOS box for speed. Google finds a lot of posts from other people who liked the old search, but no answers. Has anyone here found a utility which replicates the old search functionality?

Stun Gun Mod Suggestions/Tips? HV Power!

The 2 images are the type of stun gun parts I have, I believe its a spark gap igniter one but m not 100% on that as I would rather leave it in the cardboard circular case unless I get confirmation it could be modified. What kinds of projects could this be used for, I'm pretty sure its DC powered and attempted putting the outputs to curved metal electrodes for a Jacobs ladder but arc stays in one spot after many adjustments.  Ive only worked with HVAC with an unrectified flyback for plasma globes. Anyone have any suggestions on what to pump this badboy into. P.S. Using 2 metal screws from an Xbox 360 and putting them very close together makes a very nice whistle to it, :).

muffin/bake shop style muffin tops?

Does anyone have a recipe or the secret for baking the big muffins you buy with the big rounded cracked tops? I've searched the web but it seems to be a closely guarded secret. Maybe someone out there has worked in a muffin shop or bakery and could share their expertise. If you're worried about blowing the whistle I can assure you that I do not want to make a profit and am not planning to open my own bakery. I just have a weakness for those muffins and i'm a single mother who can't afford to treat myself to such an extravagance every day. I would greatly appreciate it as I can no longer cope with the feelings of guilt knowing I should be saving that money for my sweet little daughter :( . I would be forever grateful :)

Camera Suggestion

I do ALOT of youtube videos, but I also need still good quality still pictures and my camera just died. I have a budget of around $400.00 and need something that takes HD video I would like something that either has an external mic jack or takes good audio, my subscribers complain of a high pitched whistle in my current videos (I cannot hear it) It would also be nice if it could be set up to stream directly to a computer, as I would like to record classes, and some of them are 8-12 hours. If the Contour +2 took still pictures I would compromise on the picture aspect because I shoot a lot of outdoor action stuff, and a waterproof helmet cam would be nice.  Right now I use a Nikon S8000, and liked it, but it just wasn't durable (plus the sound issues) I know I am asking a lot, and will have to compromise something, but I cannot go over $400-$500 budget. Please recommend something you think would work

Suggestions for super basic (free or inexpensive) software for drawing floor plans from scratch?

I'm old school.... T squares, canary paper, ruling pens etc.   I need a super simple drawing program that will let me draw lines to scale on a grid and give dimensions.  I don't need/want  to drag and drop, I don't need bells and whistles, 3D, landscapes, floor plans  etc etc. I've tried ProDraw and another trial program, but find I spend too much time trying to delete  all the 'helpful' extras like doorways - shades of that pesky paperclip 'helper' in Word.  I don't want to drag anything anywhere.  I just want to draw to scale on a computer.  There is a time crunch here, so easy like the original  MS Paint would be good. I have Adobe Elements 1.0  and love it.  If I could figure out how to make dimensional lines with it (is it possible??)  I would be set. Just thought I'd ask before dragging out the Clearprint.   Thanks.

Building ideas for a onstage train? Answered

My high school is doing Hello Dolly and if possiblelwould like a train to be brought on stage, does anyone have ideas on how to do that? I have a couple but I'm having trouble bring all of it to one idea. I had an idea you can make hand turnable axles and gears for the wheels, other stuff for the smokestack, I was thinking maybe corflute for the body, but its really just chaos in my head right now. Any suggestions?  It needs to be fairly lightweight.  It would be nice to have workable wheels  And not a real smokestack obviously but the appearance of smoke and a whistle Maybe a back platform if at all possible that Dolly could jump on... Our stage is small. It has no special things about it and its roughly 20 by 30 feet. There are two backstage wings that are really just small hallways that let out into the audience, and those are about 20 feet long.  Our plays are all financed by the drama teacher herself so the less expensive the better as well.  If nothing comes up thats ok too. We have an alternative that can be used.

keyless ignition ?

My car already has keyless door locks. I am just looking for a keyless ignition. Doesn't have to be the same system or fob as the windows and door lock. I can install a push-button ignition switch, but I want a security circuit like the newer cars that requires the presence of a fob (in your pocket) for the car to be able to start.  The instant on-off button isn't a problem, but you need everything that goes off when you would turn the key off to go off when you leave the car, not when you push the (on)-off button. It's going in a pristine old "93 Town Car that still has all it's bells and whistles working. I think working this into the existing door/window system would be a nightmare, so I'll keep it separate and be satisfied with a second fob. So, I need some help. Should this be a passive system sitting looking for an RFID or active with something like a bluetooth transmitter in my pocket? I know I can buy a kit, but there's no satisfaction in that. I'm not really constrained by a budget, but obviously I don't want to go over the market value of the car (tho it's worth a lot to me).

Design criteria for Ibles....

I just noticed that we have now standards that need to be followed if you want to publish an Instructable.Standards are good but not so much if the editing options for an Ible are at a standard from the year 2000.If I had fun designing something as simple as whistle that shall be created in a 3D printer: Then why would I need images showing how I designed it?Or why would I need images for the print settings or idea behind it?A community goes both ways! The editing tools are still sub standard and the images handling is a bad joke.If I need to explain something complex with the aid of images then of course I want the images in the right spot with the text - ever thought about this or visited website that offer similar after the year 2000?Usability is not just a means to provide the same look on all browsers and devices or to be able to use the most basic way to convert a website into a PDF.Usability is also for those who create it but that part seems to be lost for years now no matter how many times people ask, suggest or comment on the problem.I have no problem making my creations available elsewhere if that is the only way out here.If you want people to create proper Instructables then for crying out loud give them the means to do so!And fix the damn category selection bogus when posting in the community section.Has no use for years but why bother to fix it....Before you guys force people doing things your way only you should consider in what times we are and how proper usability would benefit this site....

What is the strangest looking insect you ever encountered?

Here around me the summer is on the way! This not only means a never ending supply of mozzies but also that after a bit of rain you have a concert every evening. If you ever saw a game of soccer you know the sound of the whistle the referee uses - it is painful at close range. Now imagine you relax in your garden and right next to your chair exactly this sound comes out of the ground! Of course if you are like me and it happend during a holiday the first time you might want to investigate. But once you move the sound stops, if it starts again and you are careful you will find a small hole in the ground that seems to be the outlet of a small speaker LOL The really hard part is to actually get the thing producing the sound, I tried many times and out of ten I usually only get two out of the ground. Was too lazy so I borrowed the pic from this website, which has a lot more info on the insect in question too. What you get out of the ground looks like a cloning experiment gone wrong. A maggot like body with legs, under-developed wings (they make the noise) and a head like something from your latest horror movie. To top it all up you also get a lobster like claw that is surprisingly powerful. Fun fact: The numph of the cicada is considered to be the loudest insect of earth, reaching up to 130 decibles at the hole! And because you might think all ugly babies will be be beautiful once grown up I just say that mum and dad would not win and beauty competition either LOL Stick insects are cool, these creatures are just out of this world! What have you encountered that is weird enough to post?

How to Make Lanyards yourself?

Creative types may be curious to learn how to make rubber bracelets. If you are able to follow simple directions you will be able to produce your very own ones for personal use or to give as a gift. Whether for yourself or a as a gift, it will be a great way to secure your keys, cell phone, badge, or whistle. In learning how to make lanyards it is important to choose the right material. A popular making material is a thin, elastic, and flexible plastic lace. It is readily available at most craft stores and referred to as craft lace, , gimp, or boondoggle. There are many different stitches that can be used to make or braid . Many braiding techniques are complex and time consuming. One of the simpler braids is referred to as a crown (or round) knot. One must utilize patience and follow directions carefully in learning how to make rubber wristbands. The basic crown knot is as follows:1. Take two strands of craft lace, fold them in half together (length will depend on the type of lanyard) and tie a knot toward the top to hold them securely together. You now have four strands secured at the top. 2. Spread the four strings apart, separately, pointing in each cardinal direction of a compass. Hold the left string with one finger (close to the knot). At the same time, pull the left string over the top string. 3. Cross the top string over the right string. At this point the top string is covering both the left string and the right string. Now cross the right string over the bottom string. Finally, cross the bottom string over the left string and tuck it under the looped top string. Pull each end of the four strings extremely tight to make the first knot. Continue crossing the strings in the same manner until the desired length is reached. The knots will produce a rounded href="http://Www.ybuw.com" target="_blank">silicone bracelets4. Do you think it a good way to make a gift to convey your sincere feelings? So, let’s do it now!

I have a Task Force model #25143 electric mower (corded) that suddenly stopped while I was cutting some grass that I admit was probably too tall.  I have had no previous problems with it whatsoever since I bought it new last year.  After some searching I found out that it had tripped the breaker (was plugged into the GFI outside the house).  It's only a short cord--an extension must be used.  I bought a new one last month, but tried two other ones just to be sure--no change.  I tried using a different outlet--no change.  I tried using an inside outlet and promptly tripped that breaker as well.  I checked the blade, it spins freely, there was a small amount of grass on the shaft above it, I removed that.  There was a lot of cut grass on the underside of the deck (it's a mulching mower) and I removed all that going to the side discharge and the chute where the bag would be.  I took off the cover to the motor, there was some grass and dust in there, I cleaned it all out.  As for the connections, they are still clean as a whistle--no rust, corrosion, burning, fraying, etc. they still look new.  I was looking for a fuse and couldn't find one, checked by the motor and in the handle where the switch is.  After all this it still trips the breaker so I'm thinking there has got to be a short. The plug side of the extension cord was warm.  I found an answer that said use a multi-meter and I suppose I could go buy one but then what do I do with it?  I don't know what I'm supposed to hook it to and I don't know what any of the readings would mean.  I'm too low on cash now to pay for repair or buy a new one and where I live the grass needs to be cut almost 2x a week--any advice?  How can I find the short or is the motor gone?  I also read about motor "brushes" but don't think I saw any not that I would know what they look like anyway.  I included pics of the switch and the motor.

Monster battery pack for pedalboard

Hi! first of all happy being here in such a full and interesting community. Since some time i have an idea fix, i would like to play guitar in the street, not for the sake of money but for pure entertainment. Following that intention i´m being gathering all equipment i need for that purpose. I was asking myself the question about power source for all that stuff. Actually i can make it easy, since i already bought roland cube street, that runs on 6 AA batteries. BUT, i guess nobody here likes easy things. Therefore here is my project: using acoustic guitar with 4 effects and the amp running on the SAME external battery pack. short description of the project : 4s4p battery pack for a total of 14,8V and 12 000 Mah more or less.. will depend on cells themselves. Theoretically it will mean 10 hours or continuous run with all of equipment. of course there will be step down converter and other bells and whistles that i will be happy to share once i start doing it. Questions mainly are : I know that Boss pedals have center negative connection, What the hell does it mean? please someone help with this cause im getting mad. Is it just inverting the leeds? positive one going to the sleeve and negative/ground to the pin? OR it means that the pin has to be  minus 9V? This is the main question as i dont want to burn 200 euros pedals second and less important one: i will mostly go with NCR18650GA units. And will arrange a balanced pack. As the charging rate is 1A rough it takes 3,5 hours to charge. If the total capacity is 12 amp as i'm planning will it be neccessary to wait 12 hours to charge it or 4s4p scheme will still need 3,5 hours to charge all of cells at the charge rate of 1A, can i also charge it at faster rate as cells state that discharge rate is10A and so i coud use up to 10A charger? Or maybe the smart chargers identify by themselves the best charge rate? thank you in advance please know it's my first project of the kind :D
