White House #weekofmaking

Coby Unger is at the White House and the Faire today representing Instructables, so say hi if you see him! He's there with 9-year-old Aidan Robinson to present their amazing collaboration: the superhero arm. (If you've never seen this 'ible I promise you'll be inspired by it: a playful prosthetic arm that's designed to grow with its wearer, and that supports interchangeable, task-specific attachments to help Aidan not only do everyday tasks but also play his favorite games.) Are you planning any projects for the White House's #weekofmaking, or maybe even going to D.C. Maker Faire?

I Went to White House Maker Faire!

Hello everyone! Last week, I had to opportunity to go to the first ever White House Maker Faire!  It was an awesome experience overall, and I'm really happy I was able to be invited and attend.  A couple common themes were 3D Printing, and start-up companies.  It's safe to say that of the exhibit tables there, 30% or so had a 3D printer sitting on it.  There were quite a few start-up companies there as well, showing off everything from shoe/walking power generation to desktop milling machines.  The larger companies seemed to be represented by sending guests, as opposed to exhibiting at the Faire.   Check out the first vlog I've ever made covering some of my thoughts on the Faire!  There's more pictures on my Facebook page as well! Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/FozzTech (I had to use an ancient photo uploader.. one at a time was painful). Are you guys as excited as I am that Maker culture got so much press because of this event!?

How can i tell the "black" wire from the "white" wire?

I have an old house that is 100 years old. Much of the wiring is still the cloth covered copper wiring. I need to know if there is a way to tell the "black" wire from the "white" wire without buring the house down first. Thanx

Mozzies and how to keep them outside....

Down here the winter was too short and not cold enough, meaning insect life is literally exploding in numbers already. The house I moved in has badly installed flyscreens on the doors and windows, most likely due to the fact that the house is moving up and down in several points... Anyway, due to the gaps everywhere I found myself with the problem that the mozzies covered my entire front and back door areas. With an unsupporting landlord not even allowing me to replace the bad flysreens with proper ones at my cost I was left with less invasive options to tackle the problem. Before you ask: No I am not even allowed to fix holes in the flyscreens covering the windows :( My next step was to check the local garden center for some natural solutions. Lemon grass seems to do the trick for the inside, the smell also keeps flies away really good. But I had to put the pots in the garden as the ongoing smell gives me headaches. It also did very little to prevent the mozzies from coming inside when I opened any outside door for a few moments. Only way out was to get rid of the mozzie population having daily meeting around my doors. At the local hardware store I found several "surface sprays" and they all stated to be very effective against cockroaches, spiders and other crawling insects - too bad I don't have a problem with them LOL After asking I was informed that those sprays do little to nothing for flying insects, including mozzies and that I would waste my money. During my next shopping trip I got desperate and grabbed a can of surface spray from Aldi. Was under 3 bucks, so I had nothing to loose compared to the 40-80 bucks for a canister of "the good stuff" from the hardware store. At the checkout an old lady asked if I moved into a new house with cockroaches when she saw the spray and I said that I only have a problem with mozzies. She recommended to eat more bananas ROFL Back home it was already too sunny at the front door for the mozzies to show up so I waited till the late afternoon and sure enough I found the area covered with them again. The spray annoyed them badly but I kept spraying all cracks, surfaces and also the gaps at the roof line. Kept checking for a while but could not see any real effect on the mozzies other than swarming around me and trying to suck my blood. Next morning I found the floor at the door covered by a carpet of dead mozzies! I don't mean a few, I am talking enough to take the brrom to clear them up :) Now for the past 5 days the body count is going down quite fast while my door stays free of mozzies. Still have them flying around in "normal" numbers but I can get in and out without a swarm of them following me. Since the product is plant based and considered to be without any side effects on humans or pets I will see how long it lasts and then just spray again - this three dollar can should last throughout the summer... You might wonder why I go through all these troubles... Long story short, I am quite allergic to the bites. Happened as a kid when during a warm summer night at a friends place I got so many bites that the doc gave up counting. He reached over 200 just by counting my head and face to the shoulders... Now I am allergic to the bites, the itch lasts over a week and thebite area swells up to the size of a 50 cent coin with blisters forming after 2 days. You might not get it hat bad but if you do suffer from the bites I found two remedies that help with the itch and reaction: a)  BBQ igniter (the manual push type without batteries)! They work like the expensive clickers you get at the pharmacy but last much longer - plus they require more force. The rounded tip is placed directly onto the bite and when you push the button in to "get shocked" two things happen. First the pressure forces the soliver that causes the reaction into deeper skin layers where there are less receptors for the itch. Secondly the high voltage breaks down certain parts of the soliver making it far less effective to cause harm. Downside is that you might like the shock in certain areas and that you should shock at least 10 to 15 times to get a real benefit from it. b)  Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) You put a drop of H2O2 directly onto the bite or for difficult areas use a soaked cotton bud. Rubbing it in with a cotton bud for a minute or two works best IMHO. You might see your skin turn white or feel a slight burn right where the bite is - that is normal and harmless. The hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen into the skin - this turns the skin white for short period of time. But the oxygen also breaks down the soliver and the byproducts of the body reaction to it. Works great for horse fly bites too. Downside here is that you should not overdo things and that you should test first how sensitive you are to the reaction. A good test is to apply it onto a small cut or scratch to clean it. If you tolerate that then won't even feel it on a mozzie bite. I hope some of this will help you through the summer ;)

How to cut a whiteboard? Answered

Over the summer I acquired a very large whiteboard (4' x 8') from a summer camp that was trying to get rid of them. I wanted to put a grid onto it and use it for Role Playing Games-- the only problem being that it is HUGE! It doesn't fit anywhere in the house other than the garage, so it's been collecting dust in there since the summer. Rather than have it end up in a Goodwill somewhere, I would like to put it to use. My plan is to cut it into a few smaller pieces because it would be able to fit into my house and be more proportional to RPG size. So the question is: How might I cut this whiteboard without chipping or cracking it?

I've got a stack of 4 flat, white doors. Anyone have any cool project ideas for them? Answered

We just redid all the doors in our house with fancier ones, so were junking the old "boring" white ones. They are slightly worn, but they're too good to just let go of! I was thinking of maybe painting on them, or building something out of them. Anything really!. And like i said, we've got 4 or so, (i didn't count) so multiple projects could be done =)Thanks in advanced!-thenear1send

So can anyone point me towards some tutorials, coz these are some pretty wacky kicks and as you see, the blue lace is VERY long, compared to the ordinary white laces next to it. Thanks.

wall painting side effect

Recently I painted my daughter's room with pink color (egg shell finish). Unfortunately there is lot of pink color reflection in the room. entire room feels pink, even ceiling, door and closet are white. It seems that color was darker side of pink. In the past when the room had white color, two bulbs gave good light. Now even with 4 bulbs not enough light.  I saw many houses with different colors, but never felt such type of huge color reflection. Now this room is no more good for studying. Why it happend? How can I fix it?

Ubuntu crash help, please? Answered

One of the computers in my house was awfully slow, so I installed Ubuntu to speed it up and add stability. (Yes, I could have just added more RAM. But that wouldn't be free, would it?) Being my first time using Ubuntu, I was really surprised at how much I could push the processor without running out of memory. However,I still have one problem, which seems to be occurring every three days, or so. Spontaneously, the screen turns black for a few seconds, then flashes white, vertical, one-inch wide bars at one-second intervals. I've searched everywhere on the internet, yet I don't even know what the white bars mean. Does anyone know what the bars are, maybe what the cause is, and how I might go about fixing it?

Need help with rewiring a nightmare.

I have a box with 4 cables coming in. found one cable with power on white and black wire.  I have connected all the white wires together and the black and the ground  now with the hot wires i placed the white/hot wire on the top of the switch. don't know what to do with that black one, I have tried putting a black pigtail on the bottom and it lets me turn the light on but turning it off it's still on but dimmer.   None of the wires are labeled and you can't tell where they go. this "box" had two outlets one to the hall light and one to outside which wasn't really working. and then it goes to the kitchen as well as the bathroom light and two of the three bedrooms, one on each end of house.  Can someone help me figure this out, I have blown some breakers  and i even had this "pretty" light flash when testing which wire is what.  Thanks to anyone who can help. please send info to bluefly1267@gmail.com

I am in Australia and I wish to wire in an exhaust fan to my fluro light operated by the one switch. Answered

The switch has a red wire and a white wire leading to the fluro light. The fluro has twin and earth (red, black and green) leading from a previous light in another room and another exiting to the next light in the house. The fan has two wires, a brown and a blue. I attempted to parallel the wiring by connecting the blue to red and brown to white. Once the fuse was turned on, the fan operated automatically and the light flickered without the switch being turned on. I reversed the wiring (brown to red and blue to white) with the same result. Logic failed me. Given that it is two wires on the fan (pos and neg I assume) I figure I am better parelleling to one of the twin and earths, but which one? Electricians charge a minimum of $240 per hour here, with a minimum of 1 hour charge, regardless of it being a 2 minute job. All connections are 240V. Wire joins will be completed using BP connectors.

I forgot the name of this DIY Book Catalog?

I'm looking for a catalog my Mom used to get of DIY books. It was a small publishing house, a black and white catalog, and they would re-publish a lot of cool out of print things. I think they got their start with radio hobbyists? They had a really impressive list of pretty much everything-- radios, construction, farming, math, hydrogen engines, compost, crafts.... I think the family/company name started with an L and was in the southern half of the US?

Would this switch plan work? Answered

I found this online. It would be convenient for switching central lights from two sides of the house when the main panel is on one side.  It's the only diagram I found with the feed coming from the switch, going to multiple lights, and ending at a switch.  I'm having doubts about whether or not it would work and meet US code.  The black taped white wires seem only to be taped at one end, but perhaps I just don't understand.  Any input?

What's a use for 'continuous' printer paper? The stuff with the tear-off/hole-punched edges...

I've got a carton of the stuff, and it's just sitting there. Plain white, unlined. I've been using single sheets at a time for drawings or notes, and just tossing the fringes out. They end up in random places around the house. Maybe a notebook? Somehow bind the pages together by the holes, then make it tearaway. Which still leaves half of the tear-stuff floating around. Filler for something? Any ideas?

Is this the correct way to wire this transformer? Answered

I have a nice little 120VAC to 7.5KV transformer that used to call an air purifier its home, but I'm not sure how to wire it. I have some guesses, but I want to make sure I don't burn down my house so I am hoping to verify them with the help of the instructables community. Here they are:The black and white wires are where you connect the source of 120VACThe green and red wires are the high voltage outputs. (I'm guessing that since this was meant to be a negative ion generator, the green was just connected to ground)You can just connect this to a power outlet and have it run WITHOUT burning down the houseI am not sure if you need a fuse, though.Note : The transformer looks like http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/images/G1783B.jpg except it also has a green wire.

Arduino relay power over Ethernet cable?

Hi. I have an Arduino setup with 2 individual relay boards controlling two 240v power outlets. The relays are housed separately from the Arduino and I have connected the two via a standard ethernet cable. The relays I have are both 12v powered and switched via a 5v Arduino digital pin. I have currently wired the following. Orange and orange/white ---> 12v+ (from a 12v plug transformer) Blue and blue/white ---> GROUND (connected to both plug transformer and Arduino GROUND) Brown ---> Switched +5v from Arduino to relay 1. Brown/white ---> Switched +5v from Arduino to relay 2. SITUATION. One of these relays for some reason isn't working properly. The board is receiving the right power but the relay itself is not clicking/switching. Maybe sticky contacts. The whole thing is already wired and the unused cables of the network cable trimmed so I cannot use them.  MY QUESTION I have a spare single 5v powered relay board which I could replace the faulty 12v with, but with no wires left to connect it, could I pinch one from the orange pair that I am sending 12v through to the first relay and use that for the 5v to the replacement one? In a less round about summary... can I send 12v+ through a single strand of ethernet cable with a run of only about 30cm? Thanks, Steve.

What is the best LED type for interior lighting?

I am wanting to improve the light quality in my sailboat. I would like to build fixtures and controls myself and this looks like a good place for DIY ideas. I have a mix of light bulbs and none are serving all that well. All are 12VDC. All lighting will be powered from the 12V house batteries. The best light I have comes from halogen 20 watt bulbs but they generate too much heat and consume too much power. LED replacement bulbs I have tried so far are not so great for interior light quality and cost aprox $40 to $50 USD each and I have 10 fixtures with both red and white bulbs plus 5 reading lights. Total replacement cost could be aprox $1000 USD. Then the other problem is the light is a bright point and can be a bit blinding if your look in the direction of the fixture. I am thinking of wash lights for most lighting and keeping the reading lights for...  well, for reading. I do have an acceptable LED for the reading lights but always on the look out for a better one.  I have been on aircraft that used all LED interior lighting and it was the best LED lighting I have ever seen. The systems used a combination of white LED dome lights and RGB side wall wash lighting. The wash lights could be tuned to an impressive range of color including very pleasant white. So I know it is at least possible get really good light from LED's. Downside to this is it's expensive and designed for 28VDC from aircraft power. The controller was a dedicated cabin interior control module and computer. The other requirement for the boats interior lighting is to have red light for use while underway at night to help keep the night vision. Red LED's I have used for this are very harsh and poor quality for getting around in the cabin. I would like to try RGB LED's for a wash lighting system that will give either white or red. Preferably with both variable and dim-able so it can be tuned or programed as desired. The control modules I have found so far make a lot of claims for their multi-color capabilities but not about their steady on white light quality. Again I am interested in white and red lighting however if a large variation of colors is a side effect that can be turned on for fun thats fine but not needed. I would be happy to document my project and post it here if I find a good DIY solution. So far I have found a couple of RGB controls here and may try one but I would like to hear about the white light quality before I start buying parts. My homework for now will be to calculate an actual quantity of light needed and how many controls I would need/want.  Thanks for your ideas.

Wearing shed antlers? Answered

So when I was a kid I found this nice rack of white tail deer antlers, 8 points. Moved out of my mom's house and forgot about it, but recently they resurfaced. I'm thinking it would be really cool to wear them for Halloween.. I've done a lot of battle with search engines for the past few days but it doesn't seem like anyone uses shed antlers for anything terribly interesting. Much light-fixture-ing and car key racks abound. And the guy who made a USB key casing. Does anyone have any ideas on how to wear them such that they look about as natural as a human suddenly having horns could be? I'm not bald, so that's not an issue, but I don't have access to a lot of tools since I'm still getting started.

Hey, Americans; Want to help Tesla cars?

I just found that a lot of US states don't let Tesla sell their cars directly to the public. This keeps the price of electric cars artificially high. In turn, this gives an unfair commercial advantage to gasoline car dealers, and creates a false argument against electric cars ("they're expensive"). To fix this, there's a petition that US citizens can sign and force a response from the White House. If you care about this issue from any front - fair trade, keeping government out of your lives, cutting downnon climate change,  personal freedom - then you can sign the petition at the link below, and share it with as many of your friends as you can.  https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/allow-tesla-motors-sell-directly-consumers-all-50-states

Disposable rounds for knex pistols, rifles, crossbows and other weapons?

Is there a possible way of making disposable rounds for knex guns? The advantages are: 1.YOu do not have to pick them up after a knex war somewhere not in your house because they would biodegrade if made of paper? 2.You do not have to worry about losing pieces everywhere (doesn't it bother you people that when you shoot the knex, you don't know where it went and you lost a piece?) And the bullets have to fit in a mag loading, i have started making bullets for the okp and it worked, i used those rods from balloons you get from supermarkets. But is there a disposable bullet made for these: (you may request as a comment for other pieces if you wish):grey connectors, green rods, white rods, yellow rods, yellow connectors?

New to LED wiring, could someone help me make sure I got everything right?

OK, I had some outdoor lights in front of my house and along my driveway that have been thoroughly trampled or run over. The lights themselves are pretty much completely destroyed, but the wiring is still intact. I have a few questions on this. First, I'm pretty new to wiring still, I haven't had much of a chance to tinker with anything yet. Should I read a few more Instructables about LEDs and wiring before attempting anything? Second, I'm smart enough to know that working with power from the house would be a bad "first project" when it comes to electricity. Is there an Instructable out there that would be appropriate for learning what I need to know? Last, I don't know what tools I would need to working with the house power. Currently, the wiring is attached to a timer (which I have unplugged since the majority of the current lights are broken)... I have a soldering pen tool and 50 white LEDs and some misc resistors, but that's about where it ends. Do I need a continuity tester (is that what they're called) to measure the current going through the system? Like I said, I'm really new at this. I'd hate to wire everything up and then have it all blow up when I finally turn it on. I was thinking about making something pretty basic, like taking empty pop bottles and tossing 3 or 4 LEDs in there. The plastic should bend instead of break if stepped on, and it should throw light out decently (not looking for a lot of illumination). I'm worried that the pop bottles might collect rain water or something, which wouldn't really mix with electricity. I'm still trying to think of the housing, I just want to actually use the current wiring instead of having a bunch of broken lights lying around. Thanks for all of your help! If you want pictures of the wiring I can provide them. Basically there's the main cable that's plugged in, then there are nodes that attach to the cable with two wires coming out of it (assuming they are positive and negative :) ... I don't need this now, but it's something I want to get done before the end of summer.

Why do yellow (amber) & lime green LEDs suck?

In my experience, I have dealt with many colors of LEDs, and from what it seems, red, neon green, and blue LEDs tend to be pretty good at producing light as well as surviving abuse. They also tend to require the least amount of current. However, I have found that almost all the the classic lime green and yellow LEDs are very different, and generally don't give much light output even with significant amounts of current! I have a couple of ultra bright red and blue LEDs at the moment that will glow bright enough to see them easily only a 100 microamps! That is something I simply cannot do with any of the yellow or green LEDs I've ever had! A bit of research shows that GaN and InGaN is commonly used for the blue and neon green LEDs, while GaAsP, AlGaInP, and GaP are typically used for the old-school red, amber, and lime green LEDs. I imagine brighter and more rugged yellow LEDs must exist, given their use in stop lights and road signs. Do they in fact exist? Or is our yellow LED technology still stuck in the 1980s due to little interest in them and little to no R&D;? The reason I ask is because I want to build a light source utilizing amber and blue LEDs to mimic white light, and I'm purposely trying to select colors which will give a white light w/ extremely low CRI. However I want yellow LEDs that are a closer match to blue LEDs in terms of intensity, and preferably, efficiency. I did some small scale experiments with some unknown LEDs salvaged from christmas lights, and I am impressed how poorly this light renders colors! (and how quickly my 15 ohm resistor went up in smoke driving all the yellow LEDs I had to use to equal the light from a couple of blue LEDs!) although the light hitting white paper appears purplish white, colored objects seem ghostly and take on either a deep blue, muddy grey, or yellow. Perfect for maybe a haunted house ambient lighting! Add a 50Hz capacitive driver to get some good flicker and presto, worst light quality EVER! :D

Request: DIY LED Nightlight Outlet Cover

Hi all, I have been scouring the web and have yet to find what I am looking for.  I have seen a couple of different LED lights embedded in outlet covers and switchplates, but I need to do-it-myself because whoever cut the outlet holes in my house clearly had the shakes, and I want to convert the larger size custom covers I need to have LED lights especially for the kitchen and the bathrooms.  I also want to put them into covers that have unusual configurations, such as two outlets and a switch, etc. I have a few things I need.  (1) it cannot prevent full use of the outlet (I don't have any to spare)  (2) I need to be able to use amber lighting so as not to have the normal blue of standard white LED lighting wake me up, which should be easy enough.  (3) I would really love to be able to add them to GFCI outlets, too, but my understanding of how those work is limited. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.  I'm good with electronics right up until it involves building your own circuits, but my electrical skills pretty much top out at re-wiring a lamp, understanding how many amps it is safe to pull in a house circuit and how not to electrocute myself. I want to do this right, so it's stable long term and safe.  Again, thanks for any help, folks. -Lois

EDITED: "Odd things" people buy......recent "acquisition"

Recently I "acquired" a ClearVue device (pictures are mine) which claims to use the AC mains wiring of a house as an antenna to increase reception. What a bunch of malarkey. Oh, I am not saying it doesn't "amplify" the signal using power from the socket is gets plugged into, but that it is ONLY a signal filter. People I have seen that had one of these, bought it with the dreams of using the AC lines in their houses as an additional antenna, AND because it had, what appears to the untrained eye, a dish antenna on the front of it (it is just a piece of plastic adding no true value to the functionality of the device). Some people in marketing make me furious with how they attempt to dupe the public. *sigh* A forum was set up for people that had bought this device new, and some of the responses are scathing....I order the clearvue super booster indor tv antenna, in April 2002. They cashed my check of course but Never sent the product. I called the companyand the office is closed.go HERE for more responses.....The unit, I just noticed, has 2 black wires in it. The oddest thing I have every seen, really. One is hooked to a 5.7 meg resistor, the other end is soldered to the "cable" output. The second black wire is soldered to the AC / CAB switch (CAB side), which then runs to the 2 white wires coming in from the Mains plug - BUT it is not attached to them, but rather coils around them for about 2-3 inches. This wire terminates into the AIR. No connection whatsoever on that ends. And, coming soon to a thread near you, will be the second "antenna booster box" I got in this box lot - dissected.

Pixlr Trouble Blending 2 Exposures for Real Estate

Hello, I am testing out the pixlr.com editor version... Opening 2 photos of exact same shot... one with blown out windows in a house and one with the outside view showing in the windows.  Each time I try to use the brush mode, click black and drop the opacity... nothing happens. Here are the exact steps.. 1. Open both photos at once 2. copy and paste the bright photo over the top of the dark photo 3. delete original photo 4. unlock box for darker photo and check the box 5. click add mask layer (I get a red box next to the white box on that layer) 6. Merge visible 7. Click brush select black and lower opacity... Nothing happens Sometimes opacity is already at zero.. other times I can get it at 100% and drop it all the way to zero and nothing changes. Anything I am missing or doing wrong? Here's 2 photos for an example

The Secret Service is Calling Me! Help!!

Hi Friends,Recently someone has been calling me on my cell phone about 3 times a day saying they are the secret service from a private Caller ID. It is someone from my high school. I think they are using a spoof card because the phone number is blocked or the white houses number. It is really starting to piss me off and I need some help. They have called about 7 or 8 times in the last 2 days. Its really annoying. I called sprint to see what they could do but all they said was that I would need to contact local law enforcement to put it to a stop. The worst part is they are not only wasting there own and my own time but they are also working away at my phone bill. So, I need your help. What do you think I should do, contact the local police and get the perpetrator(s) arrested for impersonating a government member or should I try something else such as taking the law into my own hands (phone trap/ back spoofing)Thanks for all your help.Joe Rowley

Dollhouse wiring

Hi All. I'm a believer in the idea that anyone can do anything with a little info. But I'm in need of a little help.  I'm building a dollhouse for my niece and would like to add a little higher-tech slant (she won't be playing with this for a few years yet...)  I would like to add LED lights (which I will make but just have to wire for at the moment), a flicker fireplace and a door bell all on wall mounted pushbutton switches.  Feel free to suggest anything else that might be cool for a kid... The whole system will run on a 12V adapter but since I need to wire this NOW so I can continue to build, I need a drawing or schematic of how to do it. I've attached a pic of the house and have been pulling apart some of the small flicker Tealights to kitbash into the fireplace.  I have a number of white LEDs with which to make the lights but they don't have to go in right now.  I know I'll need some resistors - where do I place them?  Hide them in the walls?  On each switch? Anyways - any help is so appreciated.  She'd never get anything like this unless I made it for her - I just want it to be so cool that her brothers are impressed! Tbird

What should I use to wire LEDs in a cigar box so that they light up when the lid is opened?

Hi there, I would like to set up a simple circuit in a cigar box so that it lights up when the lid is open and turns off when it is closed. I plan on putting a panel in the bottom with holes for the lights so that it conceals the wires. I'm hoping someone can recommend specific materials to me, ie what size/type of LED, button battery, wire, switch would be best? I'd like the lights to be white, and bright (lol but not like laser beams). Do I need to use resistors too? I spent a long time on here looking at comparable projects, and while I'm so impressed with the talent and scale of the projects here, I also realize the theory behind this stuff is pretty over my head so I'm a little hesitant to start experimenting! I'm sure it's got to be simple and hoping one of you might save me a lot of time and maybe from burning my house down. Any insight would be much appreciated! Hope I'm not being to much of a noodge in asking this. Cheers, Molly

Help with building a tesla coil? Answered

I want to build a tesla coil, but I want to verify with the instructables community that it won't blow up, burn down my house, turn into skynet, etc. Here's my plaaaauuuuuuhn: For the transformer, I'll be using an old negative ion generator thing that takes in 120VAC and outputs 7.5kv(pic). For the primary, I'll use old speaker wire in  a cone shape (possibly using acrylic). For the secondary, I'll use 32- gauge magnet wire (pic). And for the spark gap, I'll use two bolts in a box, possibly with a computer fan cooling it. And for the capacitors, I'll just use an array of Leyden jars. My questions: 1. What diameter should the coil form be? I have some random white tubing which has an OD of 1/2 inches, 1/2 PVC piping (which actually has an OD of 7/8 inches), and 3/4 inch PVC piping. And is there a better alternative to these? 2. Should I use chokes on the input/output of my transformer? For those, I think I'll just wrap a bunch of wire around a pen. 3. Should I varnish it? 4. How powerful will the EM be from this thing? Exploding computers aren't that good. If I have made any errrors, please tell me.

Diy LED strip light powered from a solar powered battery bank (for painting/drawing at night)

I like to paint nightscapes and so far headlamps are not working so well for me. I used a portable light bar one night that worked well (on loan) but it was too heavy. I've been through stores looking for the right thing...and harbor freight came close. But I need something lighter weight and less expensive.  Two or three led lights don't cast enough light and 30 led storebought lights are too much light. I have a solar powered phone charger with battery bank (with usb connections) that I now plan to use as the portable power source. I plan to use a pringles potato chip tube as the light housing that can be attached by clips to my pochade (really a mod'd cigar box) on top of a camera tripod. I guess my main concern is weight on the box, so I thought running a cable off a power source hanging from the tripod would be more secure and less likely to fall in my palette (as has already happened). I need help figuring out the circuit board; and also choosing the right white led for color purposes. Any thoughts?

Sony str-dg510 receiver speaker a/b mode not working correctly

I have a sony str-dg510 receiver that I have a 5 disk cd changer hooked up to.  I have the cd changer hooked in with composite audio cables (white/red) and an optical audio cable.  I have speakers on my porch wired into the speaker B section of the receiver and my inside speakers wired to the main section.  My problem is: The receiver does not turn off the section A front speakers when Speaker B mode is selected. This is a big problem because in order to hear the speakers from my porch in the backyard I have to turn the volume up very loud and since the front A speaker set stays on it's deafening inside the house.  I have determined this happens regardless of the device plugged in and the type of cabling.  I have tried an HDMI playstation, component xbox, using only composite cables on the cd player and the receiver still does not turn off the Front A speakers when B mode is selected.  I have also tried every slot on the back of the receiver (cd, sat, tv, dvd) and the same problem occurs. Why is the receiver not switching modes correctly?  It is not turning off the front A speakers when Speaker B mode is selected.  (It is however turning off the B speakers when A is selected). I've included a diagram of how the system is currently wired:
