Wind Generator

Hello Guys, I am working on a small project that involves wind energy, I am basically looking for a generator, preferably DC and as small as possible, my goal is to generate at least 17V and between 1.5 and 2A.  Does anyone know where I can find something like this? Thank you Alejandro Moncada

Parallelized Wind Power

This started as a blog post on Make http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/05/parallelized_wind_power.htmlIt was suggested to head over to instructables and get some stuff going here and it seemed a good idea. Also, in the meantime I found (of course) a bunch of cool wind projects here (about 20). I really like the vertical Savonius turbines. I wonder if those could be stacked with a similar effect?I've been wanting to do a wind power project for a while, and it seems like a good one to work on with others. Here's a brainstorm to kick things off. Please add to it or suggest alternatives problems etc.- total parts cost < $200- leverage off the shelf parts as much as possible. - little or no machining.- over 100 watts, (ideally 300-500) (this could be totally unrealistic with a $200 price, not sure yet)- usable in small yards, urban roof topsThe guys who made the original did some research for a grant and the paper is available here: http://www.speakerfactory.net/TURBINES/GRANTS/Selsam%20EISG%2002-18%20Final.docAlright. Hopefully this is enough to kick off some discussion and gather up interested parties. I think the first step will be to tack down goals and solidify a general approach. Wind harmonic generator?

I had this idea a while ago. There's a nylon strap strung between two trees. It's let's say 2 cm wide and 5 meters long. A strong wind is blowing across it so that the strap is resonating, displacing through, say, 20 cm at 10 Hz. What is the maximum power involved? If you had one or more wire coils running the length generating current, what kind of efficiency over all could you expect? I'm thinking of this as an ultra cheap and easy means of wind generation.

    Alot of people have amazing instructables on how to gather energy  be it solar, wind or hydro electric but not alot on how to store it. So I guess what i really need is some storage instructables cuz Im at a total loss. Please help.

can we use a kite for increasing speed of wind mills. by tying kite while it is going up to the back of wind turbine.?

 i wish some one  passes the thread of kite once going round thru backside of wind turbine then if the kite flies higher the thread will move blades of wind turbine faster and we can get more electricity for very less effort .

Dinosaur wind turbine

I am in Kenya and being of a technical persuasion have been asked to fix this geriatric wind turbine. It is an electromagnet (as apposed to permanent magnet) based generator that my friend bought from the Italian scouts. I cannot for the life of me get anything more than about 3V from it. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before and if so have any idea where on earth I might be able to find out a little more about who made it or how I might be able to fix it. I have tried everything I can and still no cigars. Any help much appreciated. I am here setting up this organisation if anyone is interested access(hyphen)wind(dot)com

A min-wind turbine tower possibly tree like form

Http://www.megagadgets.nl/en/products/minikin-wind-charger-p-1265/ The image above show the small windturbines I would like to use withouth the battery compartiment, or something like wise. with the stormy weather, I was wondering if a vertical colum 3 wide, and say 3,5 m high could not be used to generate electricty. I then thought it would be better if it liked a bit like a tree, have a tree shape. So that in the bottom 0,5 m there are no mini wind turbines, but at the top end it would have tree like shape filled with them, all generating there bit of power and adding that to a battery system. As I consider it possible that to much power could be obtained, so the excess power would go to a kind of art installation. I wonder how to fabricate such a small turbine myself, but also what windspeed it could have, and how much power each one could generate. e.g. could it generate so much power that it damages itself. It may not be the most efficient form as that a small windturbine would do the same, but in total it would be flatter and with a nice color i´d like them more. I don´t really like the grayish color of those big ones they build along the road. The idea behind it is that you can then ´plant´ a forest of them. The images are merly to given an idea.

I was revisiting some of my old instructables, being a narcissist, and realized it had been two months since I posted my windbelt. Now I haven't done anything with it, it sits in the junk box, but considering the great excitement when the concept had first come out, I was wondering, has anyone done anything interesting since?

   Here in instructables, I saw a " pringles wind turbine" . I'm also looking for making sth. like that. Over there, all is ok. But, our friend doesn't tell us how we connect that wires. All is fine. We stick magnetson a cd;  and these wire rounds, to an other cd. But, after this point, we don't know how we connect wires together. After, diode connection, and battery connection.     Can you please tell me how I have to connect all of these tinks together and have electric? How do I convert wind power or wind energy into heat?

I have access to a huge piece of windy  but south facing land,  solar gain will not be sufficient for heating green houses, barns, ect..., it is very cold and at high altitude (about 6500 feet).  Strong wind blows all the time.   How do i turn wind into heat and bank that heat as inexpensively and efficiently as possible.   space needed is no issue  the property is a half mile wide.

Wind-powered phone-charger

Here's one for the tower-block dwellers - a wind turbine you stick to your window. On the inside, you stick the matching base-station, and the set uses electromagnetic induction to transfer energy from the spinning turbine to the phone in the charger's cradle. It's a neat idea, but I don't know if it's a real product - I tried tracing the links back, and ended up going round in circles in the blogosphere. What I am sure of, though, is that somebody reading this has got the skills and motivation to build their own version.  You don't need to use the same design of turbine blades, and it's up to you how it sticks to the window (suckers?  magnets through the glass?), but I bet you can do it. Blade Tip Power System for wind energy...

I'm looking at adding a not too obtrusive wind generator to a house I just bought. One of the best I have come across is the honeywell BTPS (Blade Tip Power System) - it isn't as sleek looking as a lot of the turbines I am looking at, but it seems like a good concept to me. http://www.earthtronics.com/honeywell.aspxI can't believe that this company is the first to come up with the concept; has anyone here seen any other similar systems, designed to run in the lower speeds/altitudes common in a smaller residential setup, but generating decent power?

Wind energy to light up a car top sign?

Any help here would greatly be appreciated. I work at a pizza delievery place where we use car top signs. In order to light up the signs we must plug it into the cig.lighter. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to use the wind from the car moving down the road to power the light in the sign to free up the cig. ligher for other things( Sirius radio). I have absolutely no idea on how to go about this. Anyone have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate it.

Calculate energy generated by wind or wave energy?

Is there anyone on here that knows how to calculate the energy generated by from wind or waves turbines. I've been trying to find out on the 'net but all i can find is either way too advanced for me or just describing good places to put the turbines. I want to know if I should go for wind or wave energy for greening out my summer house.? I think wave generated energy would suit the place best but i need to confirm that.

Alternative Energies house hookup?

I was wondering if there is a name for a specific term.  I want to create a wind or water turbine using old PC fans and rectifier diodes (which i have successfully done before).  I intend to create many of these and hopefully hook them to my house which is currently still on the main grid.  But i was wondering this.  Is there a way that i can hook up the output wires from the diodes (where the useful energy comes from) to a battery bank (which i have also created) and then make it so that when those are full, it supplies the extra occasional energy from the wind turbine, to any part of the house that might need it? and then when the power goes out the batteries kick in?   If not, is there a way i can make it so the batteries will fully charge off the wind turbine, then when fully charged, they will kick in and supply power to part of my house until they run out, and then allow it to switch back to the main grid while the wind tubines recharge the batteries? I have a large house so i know that my house can never be completely 24/7 dependant on wind/solar/water power.

Does the air disruption truely affect energy usage in this particular situation?

I was reading the comments in this Ible: https://www.instructables.com/id/Parasitic-Wind-Turbine/ and they said that having the turbine in the way of the airflow would create more of a load on the A/C thereby causing it to use more energy. I don't understand it in this case. I can see how putting it in line, mounted to the exhaust port, thereby blocking the exhaust would restrict the airflow. I don't see how using the already exhausted air would restrict the airflow. That, IMO, would be like saying that when you are stopped at a red light and another car is behind you, your engine is working harder because that car is behind your exhaust. Am I thinking right on this?

has anyone considered a DIY design for a weather baloon wind turbine Like the Mars wind turbine?

Hi the mars windturbine seems to be a simple idea take a weather baloon add fins allow the baloon to spin bottom over top and connect generators and cable to the ends. It has a stableiser in the center. It would almost make sence to make one by doing. What are good recourses for that? Where can I find more information on it? Energy underneath your house?

Hi all! I've being thinking on how to get off grid for a while now, in the first stage to use solar power to get the energy bills go down and in second place to get my stamp on earths energy consumption, using my house in a greener way. So solar energy and wind energy are on my mind, but recently i started to think about more possibilities. Like using my crawlspace to work for me. Maybe its posible to make a wind turbine underneath the house, or use the constant temperature to cool my house during summer. I've seen plans on the internet ( and cant find them anymore... ) about using a sort off vacuum chamber that has a constand wind flow comming in, trough a system of pipes that drive a wind turbine inside. The idea is that, because of the vacuum effect, you need only a small gust of wind to power the turbine. Where i live theres always wind, sometime a little, sometimes waaay to much. The crawlspace i have isnt that high, about 50CM in hight, and during the Fall and Winter months theres a high level of water, about 25CM. Durring summer its mostly muddy sand, so there's stil a lot off cool water trapt in there. So about the idea on cooling my house, how about a water cooling system that runs trough the house? How would you guys make such systems, have you already tryed this out, and are there some enthousiastic folks out there willing to go all the way and show these idea's are doable, so everyone can make it??? PVC pipes and winding Tesla coils....

There are still people out there playing with high voltage.And one big problem when it comes to Tesla coils is winding the secondary coil.Now, I won't go into the details and options of the actual winding part, instead I would like to share some tricks that might make things easier for your project.Whether you wind fully by hand or make use of some mechanical winder, magnet wire is a very slippery thing on PVC.For that reason and some others we usually wind as tight and close as possible.Any leftover spaces that you find after the winding is finnished will severly compromise the overall tension of the wire in this region if fixed.Next problem is what many call aging.No matter how good you coat your coil with varnish or paint it will start to degrade over time.I found a simple fix for these problems :)Well, not really that simple but I am too lazy today to make a full Instructable for just an addition that everyone can make in a few minutes....Let me start with idea behind it all:I noticed that no matter how thick the pipe or wire is that there is little to no chance at all to get any of the coating material through the wire and all the way down to the PVC.One coil failed after I abused it so I did some cuts and had a close look with a magnifying glass.The coil itself was really good covered but it was like a sleeve that sits on the PVC with nothing on the underside of the wire except for a few single spots.Some people will now say to just a much thinner mix for the coating to allow the stuff to sweep through but that does not always work.One big issue I noticed is that not all paints or varnishes actually stick to PVC.Especially those non smelling eco friendly ones most places now sell.This means when the coil expands due to the vibrations and heat the wire can simply rattle off the varnish or the coating itself can crack under the stress.So I thought there must be a way to fix this right at the winding stage....PVC is a good insulator too!So why not use PVC instead of messing with other things?My first attempt here works quite well with thin wire and goes like this:Go outside with your winding rig and have a bottle of PVC primer and a little brush or sponge ready as well as some gloves.If you have use a friend, if you have none make a small rig to hold the sponge right in front of your winding area.The key is to keep the sponge wet with the primer so it will wet the pipe properly.Best is to have the speed and distance set so the surface just starts to dry off under the wire.The primer will cause the PVC to soften, so the wire slightly sinks into the surface.An automatic winding rig is best here as it allows for consistency.There is no too much or too little here is nothing drips terribly and your wire sticks without fully sinking in.Once done you can cover the winding with your prefered coating.For thicker wire, lets say 0.3mm or thicker, I now use a similar way but with more preperations:Using some very rough sandpaper on a belt or vibrating sander I create a small pile of PVC dust.If you prefer some fancy color you can use ABS plasic here too and it dissolves in a similar way.The resulting mix should be free of lumps and of even color, if in doubt use more primer.Consistency should be a bit thinner than honey, if yours is too thin you can add more ABS/PVC or let the primer evaporate off while stirring it every now and then.To get a good start I do a few turns dry first with quite a big spacing.When approaching the actual start of the winding area I use some stick tape to make the last alignment and start to apply the mix onto the first bit of the winding area.Some lint free cloth with a bit of primer is used to wipe off any excess towards the still uncovered part of the pipe.Every time the mix on the pipe dries out too fast a brush with some primer is use to wet it.Every time the excess runs out a bit more mix is applied onto the wound area.The key is to only have a small area in front of the winding covered with mix with the most is on the winding and "cleaned" off towards the empty area.This way the entire wire is covered by PVC all around.To finnish off you simply use a brush and paint the mix onto the rotating coil until you have an even finnish.What are the downsides?The primer stinks and is certainly not healthy to breathe in. So good ventilation is a must have and it works better in colder temeratures as it gives you more time.It might require some test runs with braided fishing line or similar to get a feeling for how much mix or primer you need to apply and how much max tesion you can use to preven the wire from sinking in.Any benefits?IMHO using this method makes it possible to get a proper bond between the PVC pipe and the wire.And by using PVC or ABS as the coating there is little to no change material properties.This in return gives far less chances for vibrations or wire expansions that result in failing insulations.The whole thing just is one piece of PVC with the wire embedded in it instead of having a wire on top of the PVC with some coating above. ;)Are there alternatives to the PVC primer?If Acetone is much cheaper than you can use it but the same safety measures apply and the mix might dry a bit quicker.What if I need a break or stop the winding for one reason or another?Simply wipe off all access and stop with just enough tension on the wire so you can star again with no problems.Then start by wetting and applying the mix and continue winding as before.

How to build a car powered by a savonius/wind turbine

Hello! I have seen an interesting experimental car on German TV. It is a small car, in which a wind driven helix directly trasmits the mechanic energy to the wheels. The car moves, even against wind direction. That car was equipped with a tall helix perpendicular to the main axis. I think that a savonius turbine would be more effective because it can exploit winds coming from every direction. Does anybody have any ideas or plans to realize a similar car?

Little Windmill Project

Hey everyone a while ago I was cleaning out my closet and found a little micano car, it had a motor on it I was wondering is it possible to use that to generate a little bit of wind energy, if so can someone who knows alot in this field explain how to I intend to have it as a show thing and is it possible to have different colored LED's and if it is windy it will light the all 3 and if its not it will light like 1 or 2 sort of like a wind gage. Anyway thanks for reading sorry if this is a stupid idea.

Has science ever touched on the possibility of using the vacuum of space for electricity?

I have no real knowledge of anything practical or important so forgive me if I sound ignorant . I guess I kind of am. To me it seems like it would be possible to use the constant vacuum of space to create electricity. Like perhaps some type of reverse piston pulling against elastic resistance inside a sealed container therefore creating sound waves which could be harnessed like in a wind belt generator. This cracked out idea occurred to me after seeing the wind belt generators made from hard drive voice coils on here. Until that I didn't even know there was such a thing as a wind belt generator. Again, I'm sorry if this question offends any of the real Einsteins on here who can see why something like that would so obviously NOT work.

The future of "mobile" energy...

Right now our current standard is still to use LI-Ion batteries when it comes to rechargable and power demanding devices.We all want more power for our phones, laptops or battery powered tools on the job.And we also want to be able to charge our batteries faster and faster.Back in the old days a D-Cell like lead acid battery in a flashlight was good for about 3 hours until it started to dim a bit.With up to 4 batteries inside they were not just heavy but also quite hazardous.Chargin was usually done over night and you just hoped they were not blowing up while charging.I spare you the other types that came after and that we still use as they all have their good and their bad sides.If we trust our marketing experts than quite soon we will only have electric cars on our roads and battery the size of a suitcase shall be able to run your car for hundreds of miles.The ideas of graphite based batteries or those using crystals and their forming reactions are all great and promising.Some will certainly make it to the consumer in a few years.The one thing that we are never told though is where all the energy to charge those batteries is supposed to come from.Replacing the combustion engine with electric motors is one thing but if no fossil fuel is used....Energy does not come out of thin air!Right now a lot of countries already struggle to provide a reliable power supply grid and distribution network.If you ever enjoyed a scorching hot day during a blackout caused by everyone using too much electricity you know what I mean...The population is growing as fast as the energy demand for our industries.Solar and wind are well and good but without proper storage solutions of not real use because no one can really predict how much they can produce.You know, weather and such things...If we trust our so called experts than all will come together really nice.By the time we have really powerful batteries we will have enough alternative energy supply chains up and running to keep them charged.I have a few issues with this entire concept, so let's see what other people have to about this:Imagine you have a nice and big cabin somewhere really remote and beautiful - but with no electricity for miles.Obvious solution for the modern hunter or nature lover is to invest into free energy.Free because that is how your solar, battery and inverter system would be advertised.You buy the stuff and after that all the electricity comes for free - the things pays for itself!Reality is a bit off though as you need to maintain and replace the costly batteries over time and such things.All this however totally changes for a residential home.Getting a huge solar system on your roof is no problem.Getting off the grid next to impossible.You see, once (or even before) you sign up for an electricity contract it is defined that your home is in a residential area.This brings certain limitations like the requirement to connect ot gas (if available), water, sewage and electricity.Only way to enjoy your "free" energy is by getting a good deal with your supplier.Some countries do it differently but around here it goes like this:Whatever you use still comes right off the grid.That is because your solar system really struggles to cope with load changes and providing surplus back to the grid.And since your meter is not capable ofworking properly with it either...To make it "fair" it is metered how much you use and how much you supply.Most companies here even do this on at least an hourly base - just to fair...For your bill the amounts are then adjusted.What you supplied is taken off.Sadly in most cases going negativ is not an option - if you provide more than what you use only your supplier is laughing.To make things worse what you supply is valued far lower than what you get from the grid.Often the difference is above 20%.Control....Around here quite a few people basically covered house, shed, carport and all with solar panels.This was while we had a great subsidy from the government to go solar...After now over three years most of these people still struggle to get anywhere near even for their investment.Without the grants the timeframe to break even was estimated to be around 12 years - which is about the time for when you need to replace the lot anyway and start over.Some do get nice savings on their bills though but families with kids not so much...If you have little to no chance to get your investment back before you have to replace it, then it is not really that much of a good deal after all.Imagine in town with hundreds of small houses everyone would be able to get the same money back for the electricity they provide...Pay 18 cents per kWh from the grid and get 18 cents perkWh for what you supply and once you provide more than you use you get money back.The providers won't allow this to happen as it means they not just loose some money but also they would lose control.How could they justify another price hike?How could they explain the blackouts?Why should tey pay you at all... ;)If a city with enough open and unused space would decide to go solar on a huge scale and while add also add a lot wind turbines....Someone would need the electricity provided and someone need to step in for those times where demand is above supply.Here the old triangle of power goes into full swing....You see a city or town would need also need a sub station to handle the electricity and to distribute it to the town houses, shops and so on.Funny thing is that only a "provider" can do such things.Doing it privat is usually only possible in really remote areas, like big mining outposts that just have no other option than using generators or solar/wind.And in most areas a town or city is no longer allowed to be a provider of electricty - at least not in the drirect form.Buying in bulk is no problem, having your own supply system however is not in the books.Right now most, if not all the big wind and solar farms are owned and operated by energy providers.There is billionaires everyhwere who could build a solar and wind farm the size of Texas if they really wanted but they won't do it either...Starts with the land, goes over the usage rights and won't end with activists claiming how bad it all is.Means it won't happen and if it does then the energy providers get together and claim they guy might have money but does not have the right to provide energy unless he actuall starts a corresponding company and plays by their unwritten rules.Can we still dream about it though?The dream is kept alive like the fire of hope that is only a tiny amber.If you sign up for electricity you are asked if you would like to pay bit extra so your electricity comes from alternative sources.Why is that bad, after all it is green?The initial investment might be huge for a wind farm but after that it is more or less just providing mone out of thin air.You can look the cost up for the new windfarm build near you.Same for the electricity prices in that area.And also the expected output of the entire farm.Do the math and calculate how quickly they break even....Once they do it only profit but you still pay the extra to go green.A bit like the new road that came with a toll....After 5 years the motorists paid it off but 10 years later they are still being charged while the road is disintegrating...Now add electric cars and our constantly rising consumption to the mix...We can't provide the electricity ourselfs as we don't get fully paid for it, we can go off grid either.The atom as the source of electricity is being phased out slowly as well.Finally as some might say, considering the thausands of years we have to deal with the produced waste and what aftereffects the storage might bring.Our providers will keep their grip on us for as long as they can.No government will stop them as in return they wouldn't have electricity.A cold war if you like.We never cared how much fuel our cars use until the OPEC decide to limit supplies and drive the prices up.And you can see the riches especially in Saudi Arabia.For most of the big OPEC players it really does not matter anymore whether or not they have oil or not.They make the same or even more money by other means and more modern means now.After this initial shellshock we woke up and decided that for the shopping trip of the wife a small car with just 4 cylinders will do.Overcrowded cities and roads also pushed us more into thinking small.Again it took force to go further, this time by governments slowy "going green".Emmissions, greenhouse gasses, polution, particles and corbon monoxide...Sounded all godd in the ads but it meant we could no longer afford our old car or even got banned from entering the town center with it.But a lot people still can't afford a modern car that meets the standards.Once they finally got the money and car the laws change again and they need yet again a newer car.This created a huge export and recyling market and profits for other people though.And what differenc did it all make in reality?While we were forced to improve and lose money countries like the US refused for years to even consider reducing the pollution.Countries like China and Russia even increased their pollution to impossible levels.We all remember how Bejing was literally shut down for the Olympics so the athletes have a chance to survive the games...We know how the pollution or global warming problem is misused to make money.The governments get huge payouts in the form of taxes from those cars that can't meet the specs.The dealer smiles with the increased sales of cars.And again the government smiles too as they get taxes from this as well.We know it happened before and is still happening with everything realted to fossil fuels, global warming and pollution, so why would electricity be any different?Reactors and coal fired power plants are phased out with basically nothing to replace them.Solar and wind will provide and till then we keep what we really need to keep....There is no plan for what comes after coal and the atom.There is no alternative.Batteries need electricity.And providers will always be the middleman controlling both the price and the availability.So how does this actually work you might wonder...No matter who invents or produces a new device to provide electricity - there is a very limited market for them.A farmer can't buy a full size wind generator and place it on his land...But an electricity provider can buy thausands of them....And if you go bigger than ask yourself who would need a 10 or 100MW fusion generator?Providing electricity is only a viable option if you go big and if you can sell the excess with a profit margin.Leaves only our electricity providers as customers.If you don't have to care about the buying price because it will be put down one way or the other onto your customers than it is like a credit.Only difference is that once it is paid off you start to get money back!Imagine that for your bank account ;)And if you know what you sell can have a very generous profit margin because your buyer does not care then the solar or wind farm will be quite costly to build..."We know we are not cheap, but who else can deliver you what you need?"And like our big supermarkets there will be an agreement on what the wind generator can cost.Ressources....Be it wind, be it solar or just the modern electric motor in your car - they all require stuff that is very limited on our planet.Take Neodyminum.Without it we have no wind generator or fancy motors as we wouldn't have powerful enough magnets.Vital elements and mineral required are only available in a few spots on our erth in quantities justifying mining them.I won't make this much longer than it already is, so please look up what is really needed to keep our future solow and wind projects alive.Then go and check where we can find thes things in good quantities.Once you did you might realise why the world tolerates the abuse of human rights, freedom or just self expression in other countries ;)If only China would stop today to export and sell their rare earths and prcious minerals basically our entire production worldwide would suffer quickly.Entire industries break down quickly and prices for certain things would literally explode.The US already started to re-open long abandoned mining projects as suddenly even the most costly operations become viable again.Think about this next time you fancy a world free of cars and truck using combustion engines ;)

can I poll the energy from my 25w solar and 12v windgen with a circuit to charge a SLA??

Building a wingen will put out like 125ma and I have a PV panel puts out like 250ma can I combine the two and charge my 12v sla simultaneously? I know Ebay has dual PV  and Wind charge controller but any other circuit to do this ?

do turbine generators have a maximum rpm or does it just produce more energy the faster it spins?

I am trying to find out if wind turbine generators have a maximum rpm or if they just keep producing energy. if so, my next question would be, does generators maximum output have a maximum rpm. if it spins too fast because the wind is very strong that day, will it affect the turbine and cause it to overheat?

VAWT a new way to wind generation

Guys need help to realise its feasiblity and pros & cons. This project will comprise of a renewable energy source which is controlled by TI msp430 controller by closed loop system. This renewable energy source will use a magnetically levitated vertical axis wind turbine with single phase permanent magnet alternator made by our team. There will be 3 stationary wind guide vanes/flaps of concave shape on the outer periphery of turbine. These vanes will be controlled by dc gear motor for constant wind flow and protection against high speed winds. Using perturb & observe MPPT algorithm on DC-DC boost converter, constant DC voltage for GRID integration is made. Is it possible to use the fan in a laptop or computer to produce kinetic energy that will produce extra energy for power

Its not like powering a windturbine with lots of desk fans because obviously thats pointless but we need the fan in the computer and we could also use the thermal energy that usually escapes the computer as extra energy. what do you think? im guessing this is gonna have a simple answer why not because someonme should have allready thought of this, a car powered by kinetic energy from the wheels and or wind power outside the car. the ultimate green peace kinda car should be powered by wind rotation, wheel rotation, solar power on the bonnet or roof. iv heard some electric cars do use the motor spin to produce extra energy, when i said the spin of the wheels i also ment the spin of the motor, would using the wheels produce more power than juist the motor, thanks for any help instructables-ers ?

What would be a good material for creating a custom vertically oriented wind turbine blades?

For a school project my group an I are building a vertically oriented wind turbine  similar in orientation to the one in the link(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLa_NY5U1nk) We would like to build a few different designs to test which will give us the best efficiency as we will do using it to generate maximum output voltage. I'm wondering, what would be a good way to create these different custom pieces, especially the curved airfoil shapes we may wish to utilize in the design? Thanks!

do i have the right DC motor for a wind turbine?

Hi, ive been using this site for years, first time im posting and its because i think ive bitten off abit more than i can chew but i love projects :) anyway, i have a dc motor i have taken out from an treadmill plugged it into a multimeter n gave it a twist got few volts, all good. what next? i cannot find what i need by looking at the label, it has 2 different horsepowers and also has 4 wires coming out so i dont know what phase it is either it doesnt say RPM and also has 2 different watts (pic included) i understand one is for continious use is that the one i should refer to? :( can someone just prod me in the right direction please? also it has a kind of fan which also spins on the opposite side should i take this off or keep it? and can i use any parts from the rest of the treadmill to help make a charge controller? i was planning on buying 3 aluminium blades around 30" each and wanted more than 2 batteries in my bay, im ordering a slip ring, blocking diode  and dont know what charge controller im going with yet... i have done alot of reading some things just dont seem to specific to me or maybe im just asking dumb obvious questions! any help appreciated

Wind Power Charge Regulators

Hello!! I need some help here...I am very "green" when it comes to alternative energy, so bear with me please! I recently decided to put together a small wind generation system to power my workshop. System is comprised of a 38v Ametek PMDC motor, 6.8' tri-blade array for propulsion. I also intend on installing a 2000 to 3000 watt modfied sine wave inverter powered by my battery bank to provide AC voltage to the shop. I want to be able to used the majority of the power created by my wind generator. I understand the concept of using a "shunt" but do not have a need for hot water or useless lighting. My question is this, would the Flexcharge NC25A charge controller (www.flexcharge.com/flexcharge_usa/products/nc25a/nc25a.htm) be sufficient enough to used in this system? Or is there something else out there that would maintain my battery bank without shunting the load when the bank is fully charged....Thanks in advance.

Wind Powered Quad-Cart

I haven't seen anything this on here so I thought I'd step up. Engineers (or anyone who fancies themselves A DIYer) I found a few days back I little some very interesting Wind Powered Rides...six-or-seven-ways-wind-powers-vehicles OK so we know it CAN be done, but can it be done by a DIYer? OK here's my concept, Design and shape are optional but basic components are such: Take a pair of multi-speed Bicycles, their gearing will be the basic propulsion for this vehicle. Take one of the "bikes" and hook up a prop where the pedals "where" and set the wheel output to be higher then the prop speed, this should take care of the foreward movement once going. Now for the initial starting power (Bike 2), this can either be by petal, or by electric (solar/battery- up to you) But the basis for this whole thing is simple energy transfer, if the moving air over the prop causes the drive wheels to go, and by having them geared higher, the vehicle SHOULD move faster the faster you go ..Right? Can I get some math to back this up? it sounds like it would work.
