Wiring help!

I have an 8th grade science class (I'm the teacher) that I would like to have construct underwater vehicles.  The kids will be using 9v batteries, switches and assorted other materials.  Does anyone know of any good books/articles that explain the basics of wiring, electricity, motors, switches, etc.  that I can have the students read to get a good base of knowledge in the basics of electronics? Thanks!!!

Wiring Question

Ok, I recently purchased a Go-Ped for practically nothing, and I really, really, really want to fix it up. I want to mount a couple of LED powered bicycle headlights on the front, and a tail light on the back. However, I want to be able to turn them all on and off via a single switch, mounted to the handlebars.I know very little about wiring, but I do know that most bicycle lights require physical pressure to power them on or off. Maybe there's something that can go between the batteries and bulbs?Any input you can provide would be fantastic!-Ryan

Dollhouse wiring

Hi All. I'm a believer in the idea that anyone can do anything with a little info. But I'm in need of a little help.  I'm building a dollhouse for my niece and would like to add a little higher-tech slant (she won't be playing with this for a few years yet...)  I would like to add LED lights (which I will make but just have to wire for at the moment), a flicker fireplace and a door bell all on wall mounted pushbutton switches.  Feel free to suggest anything else that might be cool for a kid... The whole system will run on a 12V adapter but since I need to wire this NOW so I can continue to build, I need a drawing or schematic of how to do it. I've attached a pic of the house and have been pulling apart some of the small flicker Tealights to kitbash into the fireplace.  I have a number of white LEDs with which to make the lights but they don't have to go in right now.  I know I'll need some resistors - where do I place them?  Hide them in the walls?  On each switch? Anyways - any help is so appreciated.  She'd never get anything like this unless I made it for her - I just want it to be so cool that her brothers are impressed! Tbird

Battery Wiring?

I have new Li-ion batteries for my mac but i wasn't completely sure on how to wire it up to the old circuitry. I know that "vg" is the ground and the "vp" is the positive. I am assuming "vl" goes to the wire "vl" i dont know what that is thought.  But there is a "vh" spot on the new battery but on the old circuitry there was no wire going to there? Do I solder that wire there? There is also two very thin wires labeled ntc, i can not find a spot on the old circuitry for that is it necessary?

Microphone wiring? Answered

I have a broken microphone. Its wire is cut  inside the insulation. i want to replace the entire cable. when i removed the plastic cover of the microphone i saw a red and a black wire soldered to it.  Therefore it uses only 2 wires but in the connector it is a TRS one not a TS one. i will also replace the connector.  i am wondering how should i wire a TRS connector which has 3 leads. one being the common ground. but the other 2.  should i short them out and connect the red wire or must I connect the wire to only one lead?  Then if i buy a $0.2 TS connector and i wire it accordingly. will it work? One another question does the microphone device has polarity that is should i connect  positive to positive and negative to negative lead. because there is no indication on the Mic?

Magnet Wire

Cutting open transformers (you might call it an adapter, or charger) yields a good quantity of re-usable magnet wire. Motors don't seem to be a very good source, since the windings on those seem to be saturated in varnish to glue em together. Apparently, vibration is more of an issue in the motors, so they make the windings solid. This might be different in little hobby motors. Dunno.

nichrome wire

I got some nichrome wire off eBay, and it works great but when I connected it to a 9 volt battery it barley got hot, then I attached it to 4 x AA batteries and it got red hot. why is this? I don't understand because the 9 volt gives out 9 volts(duh) , but the 4x AA batteries only gives out 6 volts.

Disconnected Wires

So I'm working on a heart sensor, and pulled out the wires. I think I can fix it with a  little bit of solder, because after 20 or 30 minutes of negotiating, i can usually re-establish the connection to the sensor. But I tried just now, and it isn't working. Help??

Wiring question?

Hi everyone. Long time visitor of Instructables, made a few items I've seen and my most recent project was adding a star power pedal to my guitar hero controller. I bought a audio extension cable with a male and female jack, 1/8th size. I cut the cable about six inches from the female end. I stripped about an inch, inside was a bundle of copper wire wrapped around a clear insulted wire. I twisted the exposed copper wire and tinned it, I stripped the clear housing and twisted it, tinning them as well. I tinned the exposed wire to the GND, and the clear to Select. Positioned the jack and everything went well. I took the male cable, connected it to momentary switch and connected the male cable to the female jack. Turned on the system and controller. Got star power and hit the switch with no response. I'm very confident in my soldering and know I did it correctly, so I was wondering: 1) Are these kind of cables capable of doing what I intend? 2) Maybe the GND or the Select button are shorted out on the board of the controller? Thanks for any help everyone!

Help with wiring

I have disassembled an old vacuum cleaner that runs on 240v/5amps/1200w. I wanted to obtain the electric motor that should perform at 1.5 horsepower. As I was taking it apart I forgot how the switch leads were originally configured. I want to give the motor a test run but I don't want to hit the fuse in my house so I was hoping someone can help me plug the switch in the normal configuration. What order do the brown and blue plugs (that comes from wall plug) fit into the switch? And what order do the blue plugs (goes to motor) fit into the switch? A silly question really but I am new to working with electronics.

Wiring help

Hi guys I am need of some advice and help if possible, I will try and explain as clear as I can. I have a lockup which I have modified to use locking bolts on a motor and I have a swipe card reader and pcb which when swiped it fires the output to power the motor (6v) which works perfect for 6 seconds of the locking bolts going in and out. I am looking for a way so when the locking bolts go to the locked position it hits some kind of limit switch and stops there (which I have done in the past) but then I want to be able to swipe my card to open the bolts and when it gets to he open position it hits another limit switch and stays open until I want to swipe and close the locking bolts. I don't want this to be timed I need this to stop on open and closed position but able to operate when either is pressed, Can this be done in anyway?

Wiring welder in the Philippines? ( 3 wire to 2 wire )

AI have a millermatic 211 which is a multi-voltage welder which I will be bringing to the Philippines. The adapter plugs are 5-15p (120v), and 6-50p (230v). Philippine electricity mains when I live are 220v single leg, with neutral. I am adding ground to both the Main panel and sub panel when I arrive, as most residential homes with a 2 wire system do not have them installed. According to the welder schematic  6-50p adapter configuration shows white, red, and green (ground) so goingfFrom a 3 wire US to 2 wire Philippine system is it proper to wire L1 to red, neutral to white and green to ground? 6-50 receptacle does not seem to incorporate a ground in typical installations????

LED Wiring Question

Prologue:  Please be gentle...once I get past V=IR and the "right-hand" rule, I'm lost to electronics.  But I can solder and follow a schematic. I have several (7) LED sets (each set = 10 LEDs with power pack containing 2 AA batteries, switch, and resistor).  Each set of LEDs are all the same color (if that makes a difference). Image attached. Question:  Is there a way to connect all LED sets to operate with a single switch and maintain each set with it's own power supply? On a lighter note, I'm building a project for some pre-schoolers and want to hide all wiring and switches from those "inquiring minds" and "wandering" hands. Thx in advance. Paul D

Question on picoPSU wiring

First time forum poster - Hi everyone. I've just purchased a picoPSU 120 (attached pic) for a custom build and it just arrived today. The DC power arrives through 2 cables (duh :), a black and white one.  For - I'm guessing - extensibility reason, the DC cable is cut in 2 half with a 4 Pin Male/Female connector. On that connector, there's the two cables coming in, and the two cables coming out on the other side - all good. But then (as you can see in the second pic) they also do a weird cable loop of the two cables using the spare input/outputs on the connector. Why is that? I don't quite get what it is meant to do.. ? Best way to wire "PlasmaGlow" "El Wire" together to a single ON/Off Toggle switch?

Application is for car interior. Plasma Glow sells their EL Wire in 5ft and 10 ft lengths. I currently have this set-up in my car: 10 ft dash board x2 10ft rear doors (a 10ft per door panel) x2 10ft front doors (a 10ft per door panel) X2 5 ft front doors (a 5ft per door panel) as you can see, that's 7 separate lengths of EL Wire! I WANT them all to be wired up to a single toggle switch. Both the 5 and 10 foot wires have a car plug (cigarette lighter type) and then have a "music box" that allows you to select the wire to be either solid on, or to pulse with music........... I DID splice 3 wires together by cutting between the plug and the box, but something burned out, or shorted so Im asking for all you electrical wizards to help me out. The included pictures show the plug and music box.... I want THE SIMPLEST way to wire these all up to a car's 12V DC battery. I have a 6 fuse holder, and could possibly use this??? I included the pictures of the music box open in case maybe someone can figure out why the EL Wire wont light up without it, or why it shorts out (whats the weak link?) and maybe can I wire all 7 wires up to one box? Once again, looking for the best possible solution.... im no wise guy and have absolutely no clue, so I hope u guys can help..... **Im using a RS illuminated toggle switch and have a voltmeter.... how do I test the resistance/ latency of ALL the wires hooked up to know the switch can handle them without actually messing anything up? Anyway.... thanks for your help..... im the mean time I will be installing a new polished chrome billet grille in my car when it arrives! Peace
