How can I salvage LEDs that are welded to metal heat sink? Answered

I have a light fixture that used to be an street lamp, and the 350mA 240V constant current ballast failed. The LEDs appear to be welded directly to thin insulated metal sheets which as somehow bonded to the large metal heatsinks. I think the LEDs are Cree XR-C's, and there are 6 of them on each module, and there are I think 6 modules in total. I have some ideas, but how would I get the LEDs off the modules, if they are even worth saving at all? They are according to CREE they produce 78lm @ 2W, and are a pathetic 39 lm/watt. If I can get them off the aluminum heatsink easily enough, I might be able to use them for prototyping purposes so I do not kill $$$ XM-L LEDs, and do not kill 3mm white LEDs either, since I tend to kill those quite fast too by overdriving them or too much voltage. It is amazing to think how far technology has come, that XML led sitting next to the module outputs more than double the light, with less 20% less power!!! I have always thought that LED technology still has a WAY to go before becoming practical enough to justify the higher costs, but if a company has installed this Piece of Sh*t light fixture back when these LEDs were 'state of the art' than I wonder when metal halides go obsolete!

thoughts on a project i am toying with

Hey guys...little project I am working on, very very beta. But I have an led sign displaying my Instructables stats (instructable coming soon) and while building it, I realized that Instructables didn't have an API of any kind to see our stats all together. So I rolled my own...check it out click the pie chart on the result page to get the url for a xml output...very, very beta, but you can fetch the data via python or processing via the xml url data, or parse the results page. It's buggy, but it is sorta working.

Instructables server doesn't recognize YouTube's new "iframe" embed codes

Earlier today, a user reported that they couldn't embed videos in their Instructable. They get "unsupported video host" errors. With a great clue from M4industries, I'd like to report this as a new bug (okay, a needed new feature). YouTube has changed the XML they generate for embedding. The default now uses an "iframe" container, rather than an XML "object" container with nested "param" tags. Instructables' backend scripts don't recognize "iframe" as valid, and report back "Unsupported video host," rejecting the embed request. For the moment, users need to manually select "Use old embed codes." on YouTube's interface. Hopefully Instructables can add the necessary conditional to their scripts to support this new markup.

Instructables API-like features?

I'm working on a small little project, and I was wondering if there's some easy way for me to get things like views/rating/#ofcomments for an instructable easily. I've been using RSS feeds for now, but it doesn't have that data on the ible. Is there a way to power this led?

So I bought this torchlight (Supwildfire 50000lm) it says is a Cree XML T6 LED with a total of 15 LED (not sure cause no Cree branding but from what it looks like it is indeed XML LED). So the funny thing is I burnt an unknown controller on the LED driver by inserting the wrong power adapter. But the torchlight still works by twisting the head to on/off, just cant on/off, brightness control using the button and battery monitor. Now I was wondering is there a way I can buy a led driver or what to look for that supports this many LEDs and still have the functionality of brightness control etc? as i saw there are LED drivers design for DIY Cree LED torchlight (Example: See pic with blue title bar) but I wasn't sure will it be enough to power this many LEDs or will the driver die because of overcurrent. From what I know the unknown controller is supposed to control LED brightness, on/off, and monitor battery level and the display. From what I measure using my multimeter the LED is getting 2.6V if the LED is on, if it is not connected to the board, the board is outputting 3.6V. Also using diode mode I'm getting 2.320V on the LED. As for Amps, I think it is not outputting right as I only measure 0.44A (440mA), or maybe it could be that it is on low brightness.Battery: x4 18650 3.7v li-ion in parallelThere's only 1 9926a mosfet on the negative side x4 R100 SMD resistor in parallel on the positive side

Good place to get really good LEDs?

I have recently discovered that CREE has released some new XHP class LEDs awhile ago, and compared the the XML line that I have been a fan of, these ones seem to blow those out of the water. However, they are still somewhat $$$, although not too much. I would like to get my grubby evil hands on a few of the XHP70s, XHP50's, and XHP35s, but the "good" ones are out of stock on mouser and digikey. On amazon there are a few listings but they are overpriced and they do not list the binning or CRI of them. Any other reputable LED sellers? I want to see how well these would work to retrofit into either an existing el-cheapo XM-L flashlight as an upgrade, or a homemade lantern/portable floodlight. I basically want 80% or 90% CRI range and Neutral / warm white, preferably neutral. As you see I am not overly picky, but I want them for good usable indoor light quality. I have been impressed by the XML light output, but not the 6000K 70% CRI crap quality light like the ones I have produce. These LEDs are roughly twice as bright for the same physical size, and about ~30-50% more efficient. What I do want, however, is the highest binning available in it's class (aka the best ones.) Not for any particular reason (other than maybe bragging rights lol), but because I just can't bring myself to order comparatively less efficient ones with low/medium CRIs for pretty much the same basic price when I know damn good and well there are better ones for sale for only pennies more. Feels like I get cheated. :( Also if I order from mouser or digikey, I guess that means I would need to mount them to a star PCB myself, that might be a challenge. Since I do not have solder paste or a proper reflow oven, I prefer to not have to do that.

Problem with adding video -- popup box gets stuck

While reading another user's bug report about video embedding, I tried to do one of my own to see if I could reproduce a problem. Instead, I've found one of my own. On FF 3.6.13, MacOS 10.5.8, when I try to include video through the rich editor, the popup box seems to "hang" indefinitely (see attached).  This happens with Instructables and if I try to embed a video in a forum topic (like this one :-). I have a video on YouTube. I capture the embed code (which is a different format than before, no longer XML) and paste it in. I click OK. And it just sits there. No spinning wheel, no nothing, it just doesn't do anything. The OK button does turn yellow when I click it, but the process never completes. The other buttons work, so it's not like the whole thing is hosed. UPDATED: The problem is generically with the embed-video popup interface, not with video I'bles. Thanks to M4industries for helping me isolate the issue.

UV Screen Comments

Hi all, I'd appreciate some feedback on my UV screen project. As a relatively new blog I have effectively zero traffic there, so I thought I'd ask for some feedback here. The goal of the project is to provide an easy way of converting a record player to a UV screen (as pictured). The idea is to replicate the appearance "Death calls the tune" project by Lab Binaer, although I'm avoiding using an arduino in an attempt to keep costs down. The ultimate goal is an instructable, but before that stage I hope to work a bit more on the available functionality (currently it will just write text to the screen, each phrase being written alternately in one of three positions). Here are some planned but as-yet unimplemented short term goals; Investigate replacing the serial connection with V-USB New modes (Bar graph output , Seismograph style output, Spiral text) New stylus using SMD LEDs (currently uses 5mil) Offload all settings to XML file Slow rotor speed further I'd be appreciative if you could offer ideas for new functionality, uses, modifications, any thoughts or comments. Thanks, Drew

LED light with different LED, run at differen currents

Hi All i need some help, I am looking to build a light with a string of 2 led's 1 string will be cree royal blue (XPE) running at 700mA, which should use about 3 volts per LED 2 string will be cree Cool white (XML) running at 1500mA which should use about 3 volts per LED Each string will have 13 LED's in it, I actually need to run 2 sets of these. I would like run a set of a single power supply. so the Blue and white would run in Parralal with each other, and the 13 LEDs would be in seriers. So it would be string 1 Blue (3x13) = 39 Volts at 700mA 2 White (3/13) = 39 Volts at 1500mA Then a repeat of the above if possible off the same power supply. to add to this i woudl like to be able to dim each sting. This dimming function can be manaul, and would only reaaly occur a few times, while I adjust teh light setting to meet my requirments. So with this all said, can it be done, which I am sure is the case. then how do I do it.? Many thanks Damon

Instruct a wave.

Instructables can be much better. Powered by google wave. after i get my server set up with google wave i will try to help instructables by building extentions to help the whole thing work. Installing instructable found @ first instructables would need to install the wave extention to openfire and send me an email at when thats done for me to start working, making extentions. Installing instructable found @ robots made: Rossy, translater, spelly, spell checker, bloggy, alows waves to be on blog? please can still use wave, robots i will make: Sally, alows people to sell there projects using paypal, not made yet, hard, instructables robot, will be a hidden group that would include the robots above, hardest extentions i will make: JW, uploads video(mp4, flv, avi, ect), music(mp3, avi, wav, ect), images(jpeg, jpg, gif, ect), not yet, easy, swf view, alow swf files to be shown on instructables, not yet, easy Questions... will this disable instructables for a little lime? NO, to annoying. will we need to resumbit our instructables? NO that would take forever, robots job. what would instructables like this for? NO SLOW FLASH, faster to load, interactivity, save space Facts. Addsence will be getting instructables more $$ by more users. members can make group projects. members in an area can organize an event. eg maker-fair (please come to australia) members can add any files into waves. (some files may need a new extention just made for them) I will be updating this alot when I think of more so come back soon. Extentions found: Canvas -- bad when i saw this -- vectoreditor -- this has a little prob with text. like/dislike, html_gadget. Extentions i'm working on: JW player uploads and plays videos. (still needing some more development) Bot_protecter. simple editable div can not be recorded by bots eg. email addresses. (NOSPAM WAHOO) i will add all the xml files to a wave for me to create installers and add them stright into the instructable robot i am also working on. How will the gadgets be called without the xml file to add manualy? ok so if i can i will alow the instructable robot to change [canvas] [video] [like] [html] into the gadgets. the video first ask for a file and then embed that video with the jw player and lisenced if donations go towards that later in this project. and for the bot_protecter it will just pick up email address and add them into the safe gadget i made or get called by [safe]. theese can be shown as plain text by {canvas} that will show as [canvas]. if you want to see what some gadgets are goto just remember that you neeed an account untill they alow guests to look at waves it is a smart way to embed the waves that i will make better when i can and this is not installedd on my server because i need to update the java. cheers and happy waven.

How can I generate a formatted HTML file with PHP?

I'm doing a major reconstruction of my website. I want it to be more dynamic and interactive (CMS), something like Instructables. I already started the login-logout cookie system, establish a MySQL database and found a user friendly text editor. I'm planning to buy a ".com" domain if I get the system to work. I'm not trying to compete with ibles or anything, but rather just want to make a site where I can post guides then display it on my homepage. Similar to the GUI of ibles.  My Site: Can you guys help me find a decent PHP code that would generate formatted html files, so that I would be able to post step-by-step guides similar to instructables... Don't worry about the database, and the text editor, I'll just figure it out.  As a sign of gratitude, I would like to gave away a patch or a 3 month Pro-membership to the person who gets the best answer :D  _____________________________________ //I found a code, but sadly I can't get it to work :(  error_reporting(E_ALL); require_once 'KvzHTML.php'; // These are the default options, so might // as well have initialized KvzHTML with an // empty first argument $H = new KvzHTML(array(   'xhtml' => true,   'track_toc' => false,   'link_toc' => true,   'indentation' => 4,   'newlines' => true,   'echo' => false,   'buffer' => false,   'xml' => false,   'tidy' => false, )); echo $H->html(   $H->head(       $H->title('My page')   ) .   $H->body(       $H->h1('Important website') .       $H->p('Welcome to our website.') .       $H->h2('Users') .       $H->p('Here\'s a list of current users:') .       $H->table(           $H->tr($H->th('id') . $H->th('name') . $H->th('age')) .           $H->tr($H->td('#1') . $H->td('Kevin van Zonneveld') . $H->td('26')) .           $H->tr($H->td('#2') . $H->td('Foo Bar') . $H->td('28'))       )   ) ); ?>

Question by ASCAS

A fix; Error 500 & inability to download pages fully

For some time I have had issues fully downloading pages from this site. Firefox seems to hang when just a little of a page is left to download, and I have had the same on sites that use the animated Flash spinning wheel. I found the following two fixes. Just over a week ago, Firefox asked to update to 3.5.6 which I allowed. Today looking for fixes, I tried Firefox >help>Check for updates, and got a error message saying not posible as Update XML file malformed (200). Therefore I downloaded Firefox and installed it over the top of my existing Firefox, in order to retain my settings. I also changed settings in Firefox >tools>options>content and clicked on Fonts & Colours Advanced, there under Character Encoding, I changed Default Character Encoding to Unicode (UTF 8) and I made sure that "allow pages to chose their own fonts instead of my selections above" remained ticked as always. (for me) My reasons for the #2 fix, was that I have been monitoring fault reports for code coming off Instructables for the last 2 days, and the code was showing lots of failures with defining the display properites of each Instructables' page I downloaded. My MS Outlook broke about the same time Firefox asked to update, as mentioned in #2 above, and I had been useing a work around, while thinking about what to do, after Outlook's Detect and Fix  failed to help. After doing #1 & 2 above, I find Outlook has fixed itself. Sometime ago, I had lots of trouble, becuase a friend was sending postings to a Yahoo News Group, from Unbuntu/Evolution (An app like Outlook but Open Source) The group moderator had to manually release from the sin-bin each posting by my friend. At that time, I was the only person replying via the newsgroup to my friend, and Yahoo's robot moaned to my ISP that I was sending out spam/virus. I have good relations with a senior team leader with my ISP and he got on the phone to me. And gave me a date of when it happened. I went into the headers of my emails out that day, and found the trouble was my replies to my friend via the newsgroup was encoded in UTF-7. I preview all incoming email on the WWW in Mailwasher, I had already been telling my friend his emails were mucking up my Mailwasher. I checked out UTF-7 on Wikipedia and found the email standards authorities strongly advised against its use. Having some UTF-7 encoded emails on my computer, caused my whole system, to slow down, or lock up for minutes at a time, AND I was having trouble with Instruibles page downloading then too. Yahoo I discovered, saw UTF-7 encoded email as spam/viruses because its filters could not read UTF-7 very well, so stuck them into the sin bin, for the human moderator to check over. AND UTF-7 encoded email on my PC could not easily be checked by AVG, so AVG was locking up my system while trying to scan these emails. I had to purge all the UTF-7 email off my PC before things went back to normal. Normally, that newsgroup postings are archived on my PC for 6 months before deletion. My reason for discussing UTF-7 is to show what incorrect formats and coding can do to a PC, and why I chose UTF-8 for #2 above, the option i had there was something beginning with Western... I would appreciate hearing if the above has helped anybody, otherwise I will never be sure if it was not just plain luck. Peter
