Best dark metal for solar absorbance.

What's the best metal for absorbing sunlight? ie, darkest. It needs to be immersed in ethanol, which will dissolve pretty much any paint etc. I've tried steel with some kind of enamel or anodised layer, but the eths started eating that too. Also whatever it was seemed to reduce the heat getting into the ethanol. And are there ways of making metal darker, chemically or through heating? I've been recommended getting something rusty and using a rust converter, which turns the oxidised layer into a phosphate, which is dark and might work well. Also.. are there other characteristics I should be paying attention to in order to maximise the amount of heat transferred to the fluid, like conductivity, emissivity, etc? Cheers.

Heat absorbing glass question Answered

I'm taking apart a Kodak 4200 projector. The lamp assembly includes a piece of "heat absorbing glass".  The manual says not to touch it unless wearing gloves, to keep it covered when out of the projector, and that it may shatter.  Being clueless, this sounds spooky.   Is it dangerous, or will I just wreck it for projection if I get fingerprints on it?  Most glass shatters, but is this going to spontaneously burst into shards?  It's not going back into the projector.   Is it useful for anything, or should I wrap it in foil and toss it in the garbage?

Can I use a speaker motor to "absorb" energy?

I am looking to use a speaker motor or a high wattage speaker minus the cone to absorb some of the power coming of a tube amp. The setup would be a 4x12 cab rated around 300-400 watts, 120watt tube head, and the speaker motor. I am hoping that the speaker would absorb some of the power and allow me to drive the tube head harder but without blasting the windows out of a building. Power tube saturation is a great sound and not alway easy to get ... even though the cab is capable of handling most of the heads power ... it gets deafening quick. Let me know what you think and feel free to comment if I can explain in further detail. Thank You! AFF

Is there any way to make a simple, moveable shock absorber for climbing?

I'm trying to put a multi-purpose platform about 90 feet up a very large tree.  The first 25 feet or so from the ground is completely devoid of branches, so I threw a rope around some branches higher and then prusiked up it.  However, the throwing-the-rope-up-and-prusiking method will be ineffective higher up, as the dense braches would stop a rope thrown from getting anywhere.  So I was thinking that I'd do a via ferrata type system, where I had multiple slings attached to my harness and would attach them progressively to branches as I climbed, so that I could clip in, climb a few feet, clip in again, unclip the previous sling, and repeat this.  However, a short fall onto normal webbing or rope would cause serious injury.  I looked at buying a via ferrata kit, but the only ones I can find are one-time tear versions.  I really don't want to have to pay ~ 100 USD every time I fall, so I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a simple, reusable energy absorber, preferably from webbing, carabiners, etc. (i.e. the kind of stuff the average climber has lying around).  Thanks!

Making the battery hand gun safer?

Okay, so I guess we can all agree that the battery hand gun is dangerous, so this is my plan to make it safer. I'm not sure if it would work though.Any ideas? I would put the pipe #1(original) into a bigger pipe (#2) and then fill the gap with clay to act as a "shock absorber".In theory, the clay would absorb some of the shock, and IF it did explode, the smaller pipe will fly out of the bigger pipe instead.Therfore, it would reduce the chance of the pipe exploding in your hand. What do you think?

How do resistor-capacitor circuits work? Answered

I know this is a basic question, but it has bugged me, and is in two parts. The first: Are resistors like reduction valves for electricity? i.e. Do they simply absorb and dissipate excess electricity, or do they restrict its flow, as in making a large capacitor discharge its energy through a resistor to prolong output from the capacitor? Also, do capacitors store electricity until it is full, then release it, or is that only when they fail? Thanks!

Project pinebeetle

Alright, well the mountain pine beetle is really eating up a ton of forests, and it's releasing a LOT of Co2 into the air. So I decided, since new trees would just get destroyed by the pine beetle again, why not find a crop (Preferably edible, inedible is just as good) that absorbs the most Co2 in the world (Next to trees). Basically, I'm looking to offset the Co2 that's being released in the forest by growing another crop. Once all the forests are destroyed, the pinebeetle population will die down, and we can replant the forests. Any suggestions?

food for teeth ?

Hello. I've heard that teeth were able to absorb some substances/molecules thanks to the porosity of the enamel. Unlike bones, as they are not self-regenerating from the outside, I was wondering what substances may be usefull to offset the erosion of the enamel (remineralization ?). Is there something that could be concidered as a "food" for teeth ? Also, about dental caries, as they are mainly caused by bacteria eating "fermentable carbohydrates" who generate acidity, here is a question that may sound stupid, but that is serious : - to make the work of those bacteria harder, is it better to sleep with the mouth wide opened (oxygened mouth) or with the mouth closed (anaerobic conditions) ?

Underground Tube Air Conditioning

I have long heard about using buried tubes/pipes to use as a heat exchanger to take the hottter air from your house, blow it through a system of closed loop underground pipes in order to use the earth mass as a heat exchanger. The earth mass removes/absorbes heat from the house air in the pipes and delivers cooled air back into the house. Can anyone direct me to web sites about this subject. How to test for nickel levels in soil, water and plant based food? Allergy sufferer needs serious help.?

I have an allergy to nickel. It causes severe blisters so I must avoid it at all costs. Unfortunately, nickel is present in soil and water at varying levels and is absorbed by all plant based foods. There is some literature out there that lists which foods are worse, but are vague at best, and simply avoiding all plant based foods is not a realistic option. I would like to know if there is a way to test soil and water for nickel and determine how much is present? Or is there a way to test plant based foods for the nickel levels they have absorbed? I have researched this extensively and can only find information about getting tested for metals within the body. Confirming this would not change my dilemma. I have to work diligently at avoiding any further exposure to nickel as I understand there is no way of removing this metal once it is ingested. I have seen many specialists and their help is not only expensive, but limited (due to a lack of research in this area).  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If anyone needs reference material regarding nickel in soil, water and plant based food should Read This from Ohio State University.

Building a micro (ceramic) heating element for vaporizing e-liquid?

Hi there,  I'm designing a vaping device which is Li-Ion battery powered and uses standard e-liquids (propylene glycol / vegetable glycol). The liquid would evaporate around 200 celsius and the heating element should attain this temperature within 1 second. Current methods use a coil with a liquid absorbing wire, which is not durable nor easy to reuse.  I've been looking into ceramic heating elements but it's a forest of options out there, most of them becoming waaaaay to hot and/or needing a much higher voltage than a standaard Li-ion battery would provide at around 1100 Mah. So i've been thinking of building one, or having a prototype built for me. Problem is, i'm not 100% sure that a ceramic method would be the best way (so many options).  Around the ceramic element (or on top if it is in disc form), i'd place a replaceable sock that can absorb the fluid and withstand excess heat (better than the standard kanthal / ekowool / etc.). This way the end user would only need to replace a sock after some time (for instance when changing fluids). It would also not burn and contaminate the liquid like current system do.  Anybody have an idea?  Regards, Bert
