Upcoming contest for teachers

Remember how there's a new channel for explicitly educational content? That's not all we're doing for teachers. We will also be running a contest specifically for educators*, so fire up those school-provided laptops and start thinking about some awesome projects you might be able to share with the Instructables community. If you'd like to win a MacBook Air, a class set of Instructables pro memberships, and other unnamed secret prizes, you just need to enter an academic Instructable or guide. We'd love to have anything academic, from elementary school art projects like construction paper masks to a university-level electrophoresis demonstration.  In this contest, we will also be accepting guides for the first time along with the usual step-by-step, photo, and video fare. Academic Research on the DiY Community

Hello! My name is Ben Shultz (bshultz@utk.edu) and I'm a PhD student in Geography at the University of Tennessee. I'm conducting a survey to further our understanding of innovation and creativity in DiY projects. I'm particularly interested in creative inspirations, motivations, and level of participation in DiY projects. Many scholars research innovation and creativity, but overlook the incredible richness and quality of innovation/creativity in DiY communities. I'd like to conduct one of very few academic examinations of the DiY ethos and community.I'd like to invite you to participate in my project by taking a 10-minute survey on the web. Rather than protecting innovations or charging for access, the DiY community freely reveals designs from start to finish on the Internet. The non-hierarchical, open manner in which creative media are produced in this setting democratizes the innovation process and opens creative pursuits to a geographically distributed public.As part of my research, I'm conducting a simple web-based survey to get an idea of where makers are (I'm in geography after all!), how they share knowledge, and what influences their creative endeavors.With my dissertation, I plan to reciprocate the DiY ethos and keep my research as open as possible. I am keeping a blog of all my research progress, including write-ups and aggregated results, and inviting anyone interested to use the information. ID/Creationism trolling an academic requirement?

This could explain a lot. (From RichardDawkins.net via Slashdot )Apparently, the course on "Intelligent Design and Christian Apologetics" at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has, as a requirement worth 20% of the final grade, "(4) provide at least 10 posts defending ID that you've made on "hostile" websites, the posts totalling 3,000 words, along with the URLs (i.e., web links) to each post (worth 20% of your grade)."The next time I see a lengthy, ad-hominem-laden, scientifically dubious argument for Intelligent Design on this site I'm going to wonder whether it is a college student fulfilling course requirements by trolling. I notice that reading the replies to your 3,000 words of propaganda isn't required. Now we just have to find whoever it is offering photocopies of Tesla's secret notebooks and plans for perpetual motion machines if you post enough stuff supporting overunity HHO generators.Note to those so inclined: this is not flamebait, I'm reporting a piece of news relevant to this community (because of our semi-regular flamewars debates about ID etc.). Flames will be reported as spam and subsequently ignored. Intelligent Discussion will be welcomed.

New kind of contest launching January 24th

Starting this week, we will be running a new kind of mini-contest similar to the wonderful Weekly Challenges being run by mikeasaurus, scoochmaroo, and randofo. These new contests won't be too far out of the ordinary, but they're different enough I felt compelled to provide a heads-up to you loyal readers. Allow me to answer your imagined questions. What are these new contests called? Academic Challenges. What's the difference between these and a Weekly Challenge? The main difference is, um, academic. Project submissions should be usable by a teacher. I will include a list of the relevant standards for the subject matter, so pick one and make a hands-on project for it. Not too hard. We just need the answers to be useful in the classroom.  You can also submit a Guide. As long as the projects within the guide are all related to the topic of the Academic Challenge, that is. Just make sure every project is clearly tied to the academic standards we're looking for. (That'll put the majority of the work on hunting for good projects and writing good intros. Perfect for contestants who are too busy to make, but not too busy to search.) How long do these last? Two weeks. Or more, if two weeks isn't enough time to get some awesome and useful projects. But the first one will be two weeks, and the term of the contest will be clearly indicated on the contest page. What's the point of an Academic Challenge? To help build projects that teachers can use in demos or for hands-on projects with their classes. Well, that's cool I guess. Now what? Get your apples out, because the first Academic Challenge will be about Newtonian physics. And it starts tomorrow. Don't have any ideas? Was your last experience with Newtons primarily fig-based? Kitewife has just handed me a shiny new copy of Unseen Academicals, by The Man Himself.Back in a few hours...UPDATEI'm back, and here is my favourite passage, which I can also post with spoiling anything:[He] took a sip of his beer. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen: mother and children dining on mother and children. And that's when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior'.

A Cat in a Box!

Sorry, no hilarious picture - but a thought exercise!Imagine a steel box (to shield the contents from the universe) that contains a cat. Inside this box is a device that contains a gas which may, or may not, cause instant death to the cat. One hour after the device is released in the steel box (with cat) - what is the state (assume only two states - alive or dead) of the cat?Mind you, you have no method to measure the results of the possibly poisonous device - after all, measure the result and you change it! I imagine there are a few of you that have read about this very scenario in an academic setting :)

unable to send commands to Roomba560 using 'Realterm' terminal program?

Hi, I am doing my academic project using Roomba560. I have a Roostick to connect the Roomba to desktop system. I have downloaded the Realterm terminal program to send commands to Roomba.What ever command (eg 152 5 137 1 44 128 0 to drive 300mm/s straight) i gave the roomba , it is just start cleaning. i couldn't figure out what the problem is with roomba or Realterm. could any one please suggest a solution to my problem and also are they any terminal programs that you could suggest to send commands and control roomba.

Do you know any great physics/chemistry projects? Answered

To a upper-high school academic level. I've been just doing a homopolar motor and supercooling water. Nothing very advanced or interesting. Do you guys know any good projects? Pertaining to Chemistry, I've seen most on Instructables and few on kentchem. Pertaining to Physics, blast away! I've done limited projects although I have few bookmarked for later. Answers that can be made at home are appreciated! Additionally, answers that can be made at quickly with a somewhat limited number of materials are also appreciated. Well since answering stopped Top answers were from FoolishSage, The Skinnerz, and gruffalo child. FoolishSage wins because of the amount of projects provided. But these were all great answers.

16 Year Old Builds a Bike Entirely Out of Wood!

I am 16 years old and attend St. Thomas High School in Pointe Claire, Quebec. As a student in the International Baccalaureate program, I am required to complete a 'personal project' on a non-academic topic that is of interest to me. I have always enjoyed woodworking and design, so I decided to build a functional wooden bicycle. There was to be no metal used in its construction, only wood and glue. Hooray! Happiness and Joy!Because of an....eventful.....(some awkward situations happened) achievement of mine, my parents bought me a tablet! It's a Genius G-Pen 450. So far, its been`awesome. I can't wait to use it in GIMP. New Channel for Educators - a call for projects

To the teachers, educators, instructors, advisers, Scout leaders, home-schoolers, unschoolers, and regular folks who just really want to help out a teacher.... I'd like to present to you the new, never-before-seen channel exclusively for educational content! That's right. We're trying to put everything all in one place to make the site easier to sift through as an educator. Need a project to accompany a unit on covalent bonds? What about an activity to teach kindergarteners to share? Hands-on projects are awesome teaching tools, and it's about time for those projects to live in one place. It's a mostly-empty channel at this point with only a handful of guides in it (and select few projects that I unilaterally recategorized because they were too perfect not to include), but it'd be nice to grow it into a large enough section of the site that it becomes actually useful to teachers. If you don't mind spending a little extra time on the site, I'd really appreciate it if you could recategorize some of your explicitly academic content into the new Education channel within the Living category. We're trying to load this new channel with materials that include the following: subject areas for the project, recommended age ranges, and the learning objective(s) for the project or guide. We'll be running a contest for teachers starting in December, giving away class sets of Instructables pro memberships along with the usual fare of Apple products and Amazon certificates. The MOST IMPORTANT elements of anything placed into this new channel are as follows: subject area age range learning objective If you want to recategorize any projects you've done that are specifically for teachers, you may. What would be most helpful is to create a guide of useful projects that is tied to a specific learning objective. I think Florida is ruled by a mad king.

I just heard a story on the news that one of the local school districts will be ending summer vacation two weeks early. When school starts is codified by law and the only way for a school to receive an exemption to open early is to be an "academically high achieving school". Does this make sense to anyone? Schools that are doing good (as defined by a remarkably stupid standardized test) get more time to teach, whereas schools that perform poorly get less time. I can't really understand that reasoning. I've worked in public education, and I'll never understand the reasoning behind anything they do.and as an aside.Florida, come to play ball at the beach, stay because you've been imprisoned for playing ball at the beach. ~sigh~Wanted to add one more thing, The brevard county transit system is names "Space Coast Area Transit" AKA "The SCAT" and their website is ridescat.com. If you have no idea why I'm mentioning this, consider yourself lucky.

Games4Girls Competition

This is an awesome competition for any girls interested in computer games. The computer science department at the University of Illinois has a annual contest called Games4Girls (G4G). Teams of up to 5 college women collaborate to build a computer games designed for girls in middle school and high school.  Cash prizes are offered along with donations to your schools department. The best part  is you don't need to have any programming experience.  Teams are required to use the Game Maker development platform to put their games together.  Game Maker has an easy to learn drag and drop interface that has a built in programming language for customization. Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Oh boy, Instructables.... It's happened again. My Mom asked me if I want to change schools next year. I have no idea on this one. Usually one school sticks out above the rest, but this is tough. At the school I'm going to right now, I'm all settled in, it's a decent school, and I've got friends here. My only complaint is that there's no band. The school my mom wants me to go to is the 60th best school in the US, plus it's a public school, so that saves us a bunch of money by not having to pay tuition. If I go to this school, Mom said we'd have enough to get me a new computer and a decent car, both of which I could really use. Also, there's a band, and let's face it, school just sucks more without band. This potential school sounds like a dream school to me, band, great academics, small class sizes, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to leave a place where I've got friends. Advice on preparing/presenting a Python Master Class?

I am preparing a master class to present to a group of Technical Artists# at work. Everyone in the group has previously programmed in C/C++/MEL/MAXScript/Python. The purpose of the class is to collectively bring everyone's skill levels and technical understanding on variety of Computer Data Science topics to a common level.I would like some advice as this first time I've delivered such a class. I am planning on structuring the course to be two 2 hour sessions, with 30 minute blocks of content interspersed with Q&A;, code-review, and individual assistance. I know this a multi-part question, so don't feel you need to be able answer everything, just contribute what you can. Any links to articles, SO questions, or reflection on personal learning experiences is greatly appreciated. Spanish or French | Intro to Metalworking or Intro to Engineering and Tech.?

Ok, so it's that time of the year - picking 9th grade courses. I'm signing up for all gifted (higher than honors) academic classes, but am stuck on my electives.To get into universities and colleges in Georgia, I have to take 2 sequential years of either French or Spanish. My mom says Spanish is easier, like I'm sure most people would. I don't really care about speaking fluently in either language; I just need to go to college.What would you say would be the easiest to get through?So, I guess all of y'all know that I aspire to go into the mechanical engineering field. High school is a good place to start out, but I've come upon another bump in the road: Should I go with the metalworking classes, or the engineering (and technology) ones?I've always wanted to be able to weld, and I'm sure that's a major skill when it comes to engineering. Classes that my future school offers include Intro to Metalworking, Arc Welding, GMAW and GTAW (which I won't take), Intro to Milling (which includes using a lathe and a CNC machine), and a sheet metal class. The engineering class covers things like CAD, CAM, CNC, robotics, audio and visual productions, and other technology things.I think the metalworking would be best for me - I'm more of a hands-on person; i.e., I like tangent things, not doing "theoretical" things on a computer, though I know all of the CAD stuff would be very useful.I'd like to take all of it if I could, but that's only possible by going to summer school (which costs $180 per class).Any help would be appreciated!

How to answer my land phone from my Android smartphone using Bluetooth or Ethernet? Answered

Hello, guys! For academic purposes, I want to develop a solution so that I can answer my land phone directly from my smartphone when I'm at home close to the land phone, so, no Internet or other kind of long-distance communication here. Imagine a scenario where I'm at home, the land phone rings and I have the call information on my smarphone and I'm able to answer or reject it directly from my smartphone. I know the phone carriers offer services called "Follow me" that will redirect the call to my cell phone if it rings a few times and no one answers it, but, that's not what I mean. I want to answer the call on my smartphone as if it were an extension of the land phone. Two ideas came up to my mind, but I'm not sure I could make any of them work. 1- I thought of using some microcontroller like Arduino or something to hack the phone and somehow work as a bridge between the land phone and my smartphone via an Android application using bluetooth or a Wi-Fi ethernet connection. 2- I also thought of using a cordless phone base and capture the RF signals with my Arduino and make it route the call to my smartphone, so that it would ring when the land phone receives a call. If you guys think none of my thoughts would be viable, I would accept any kind of suggestions, even the most weird ones involving interconnection between multiple and heterogeneous devices, hardwares, softwares, technologies, etc. Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, you need at least a master's degree.Post Doctoral Associate or Research ScientistMassachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MAIndividual will work under the auspices of the House-n Research Group to contribute to the development of a hardware and software system that will measure physical activity type, intensity, and location in very large populations of adults using ordinary mobile phones (see http://web.mit.edu/wockets). Responsibilities will include developing and field testing wireless accelerometer technology that sends data to mobile phones, extending past work at MIT, developing housing for those wireless sensors so they meet a set of design constraints identified by prior research and so they can be easily produced in prototype and larger quantities, writing academic papers on the design and use of the technology for healthcare with colleagues at MIT and Stanford, fostering an open-source community of developers to use and extend the technology, and collaborating with other researchers working on developing technologies for the NIH's Exposure Biology Program. The appointment will be for one-year. Minimum Qualifications:An M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (or closely related subject), with expertise in embedded systems design (hardware) and RF design (e.g. Bluetooth or any other RF protocols used in sensor networks). Microcontroller programming and knowledge of interfacing microcontrollers to analog and digital sensors is required. The candidate must possess 1-2 years of research or development experience designing, prototyping, testing and debugging electronic circuits, and the candidate must have past experience demonstrating the ability to independently develop wireless sensors from conception to manufacturing to enclosure design. Expertise in rapid prototyping of enclosures, pattern classification algorithm development, and/or ubiquitous computing helpful. College (sigh)

Alright, so I know that I'm just 14, but hey! I don't think it's too early to think about college.Based on what I enjoy doing, I figure that my best bet would be to go into mechanical engineering. I thought about electrical and chemical engineering, but I am more of a hands-on kind of guy.Thing is, I want to go to a college that is in the SEC (Southeastern Conference). One, because I'd rather stay down South, and two, I'd like to stay fairly close to my family (i.e., not up North/out West).UA (Alabama) is the only one that offers courses in mechanical engineering. I'm not sure about other colleges, but because I am out-of-state, my education costs nearly $11,000 more than a resident of the state.Geez! I don't come from a rich family, so that seems a bit, extravagant.Now, I have and and have always had straight A's. I'm in the "advanced" classes, blah, blah, I participate in the Academic Bowl, blah, blah, ok. I'm fairly educated, so I'm sure a scholarship will come my way.In Georgia, we have the HOPE Scholarship, which will help fund students with high grades if they go to a Georgia college.I have yet to find a college in Georgia that offers courses in mechanical engineering. Now, Georgia Tech may have one, but I cannot go there, as they are a fierce rival of UGA.After writing all of this, I don't actually remember my purpose of posting this here, but will continue.Oh, that's right: Does anyone know of some scholarships that would fund out-of-state students?Any other advice, of any kind, would be appreciated.Didn't know picking a college would be this hard.P.S. Congratulations Hands-On Learning Contest Winners

Thanks to everyone for participating in the Hands-on Learning Contest! We got a lot of great entries, and I’m very pleased with the overall quality of the entries that we received. The grand prize entry, ynze’s Make an LED Wall Piece in Class, won because of the quality of his presentation and the thought given to how other educators might be able to use the project in their own courses. If you’re launching a Maker class (yes, that’s a thing), this project demonstrates a framework for approaching guided building while still giving students the freedom to create something uniquely personal. Plus, the wall pieces look pretty cool. The other winners are equally deserving of praise. As usual, we ended up with some projects that are almost classroom-ready (the electric line aircraft, a space balloon, and invasive species control), and I fully expect that some enterprising educators will soon be using those projects with students. If you do so, shoot me a PM so I can interview you and your class. The remainder of projects are ready to be adapted for the classroom. The electrostatic motor, the tensegrity ball, and the laser-etched Aztec coin are ready to be snapped up by a teacher willing to work backwards to academically justify the project within their curriculum. Or they’ll make VERY engaging demonstrations. A special shout out to the young man responsible for launching a balloon into space. We’ve had space balloons before, but the documentation of his project was unusually detailed. If you’re launching a space balloon in the United States, that kid has blazed quite a trail for you. Well done, robotkid249. Please keep participating in these contests, because even if you didn't win a prize, you still helped to make learning more meaningful for students. Float Your Boat Challenge

<br /> [BCITSA YouTube Chanel] Recently, the BCIT Student Association (BCITSA) hosted a 2-day 'Float Your Boat' competition for the Marine Engineering Students at the Marine Campus in North Vancouver. Contestants were supplied with ‘surprise’ materials to construct their vessels with; materials included plastic garbage bags, popsicle sticks, bamboo skewers, aluminum foil, string, plastic party cups and tape. Teams of 2-3 were given an hour to become acquainted with the surprise materials, then design and construct a sea-worthy vessel. Boats were then raced in heats on the indoor pool, using human-powered fans for wind, to determine who had the fastest time. Prizes were awarded for: Fastest Boat, Most Creative Team and Best Overall Design, all donated by local businesses. I attended just to check out the scene, but the event was also covered by local news media and has since been broadcast on stations in Metro Vancouver, as well as printed publications. Pretty awesome for a low-budget student association! And there's more, the BCITSA has a history of hosting awesome events for students, such as: 3rd Annual Flying Extravaganza, where students at the Aerospace Campus in Richmond, BC "construct planes from everyday office supplies, with the winners chosen based on the distance they can safely land their lego pilots. Additional prizes go to those with best design and best crash." CTV News coverage (youtube video) Engineering Week, hosted at the BCIT Main Campus in Burnaby, BC, where electronic, mechanical and civil engineers compete in tower building, catapult destruction and racing CO2 powered cars, all made from everyday office supplies. As well as the competition Engineering Students brought along projects they have been working on to share with their fellow students, there was even a real live Angry Birds game being played. Scientists hit with 'end of the world' legal challenge over Big Bang experimentSep 1 2008THE biggest scientific experiment in history has been hit by a last-minute legal challenge - amid fears it could cause the end of the world.Opponents of the Large Hadron Collidor claim the machine may create a mini-black hole that could tear the earth apart.The £4.4billion machine, the most expensive experiment in history, is due to be switched on at the European Nuclear Research Centre - CERN - in Geneva, Switzerland, in nine days' time. Those behind the project hope it will unlock the secrets of how the universe began by replicating the conditions of the Big Bang.The machine will smash pieces of atoms together at high speed and generate temperatures of more than a trillion degrees Celsius. The collisions will create temperatures 100,000 times hotter than the centre of the sun in a space a billion times smaller than a speck of dust.But opponents fear the worst. An application for an emergency injunction was rejected on Friday and now the case will continue under human rights laws.German chemist and academic Professor Otto Rossler, one of the project's opponents, said: "CERN has admitted mini black holes could be created when the particles collide - but they don't consider this a risk. "My calculations have shown it is quite plausible these little black holes survive and will grow exponentially and eat the planet from the inside."We do not believe the scientists at CERN are taking all the precautions they should in order to protect human life." Professor Rossler claims in the worst-case scenario, the Earth could be "sucked inside out" within four years of a mini black hole forming. He argues the research violates the right to life under the European Convention of Human Rights. The legal challenge is against the 20 countries, including the UK, behind the project.Scientists involved in the project have dismissed concerns as "absurd". Particle colliders have been used by scientists for over 30 years without any noticeable harm to the planet. This latest machine, however, is the largest and most powerful ever constructed. Built 300ft beneath the French-Swiss border, it will fire particles round its 17-mile circumference 11,245 times per second before smashing them into each other.The machine will be activated on September 10, although it will be several weeks before the first particles are collided. South By Southwest (SXSW) 2009 Interactive Review - It's a Party Masquerading as a Conference

It's no secret that SXSW is more about the parties than the conference, but when you have so many smart people who run interesting businesses together, it's a pretty significant lost opportunity that the conference isn't better. Christy and I attended the 2008 SXSW Interactive conference, and decided it wasn't worth coming back. However, Instructables was a finalist in the Web Awards "Classic" category at the 2009 SXSW Interactive conference, which netted us two free passes. So, we attended again this year. This is my review of the interactive portion of the conference.High level - I'm glad we didn't pay. If you go, admit that you're going for entertainment, not to learn something about the interactive industry. The keynotes were excellent -- even if I didn't come away from them with anything actionable to do --, while the rest of the panels and talks were terrible. Having the resources to get to Austin doesn't mean that most conference attendees will have done their homework -- otherwise interesting panels with smart people were nearly always hijacked by stupid questions, and unfortunately it was rare that a moderator would shut down the stupid questions and get back to anything engaging. For example, at How Safe is Your Domain Name? someone actually asked "What does ICANN stand for?" If you're the type of person who reads reviews, and tries to determine if a conference has value for your business, SXSW does not. It's a party masquerading as a conference. If you go, think of it as a vacation, enjoy the evening events and keynotes, and when you learn one or two interesting things by accident, you won't be disappointed. Longer Review:Plan B: Can an Ad Guy Bring Bike Sharing to America?The story of how an advertising agency exec. was able to start up a bicycle sharing venture. Worth checking out just to understand how Crispin Porter+Bogusky works, and to see how they keep their thinking fresh about advertising.Spying 2.0: Can America Compete With Web-Savvy Enemies?Quickly devolved into an I-use-Twitter-so-should-you panel. Yawn. Is Privacy Dead or Just Very Confused?Academics talking about websites they use, and privacy issues they think might apply. A discussion of "experiences"; nobody on the panel is actually doing anything real, nor do they have any insight into major players' privacy policies or how those policies affect users. How did they get a panel?Change v2Lawrence Lessig's non-keynote-scheduled keynote on how money reduces our faith in politics. Excellent. Find a video of this and watch it.Opening Remarks: Tony HsiehTony Hsieh has given this identical talk at other conferences, but the message is so good, it's worth seeing twice. Slides available here.Feed Me: Bite Size Info for a Hungry InternetThis had an interesting set of people on the panel, but it nonetheless turned into a why-Facebook's-new-homepage-sucks-because-it-copied-friendfeed fest. Then, the panelists started openly wondering why they hadn't invited anyone from Twitter to be on the panel.Collaborative Filters: The Evolution of Recommendation EnginesThis was one of the biggest disappointments. Anton Kast of Digg is clearly top notch, and has spent deep hours thinking about recommendations and the math behind them; and, the people making up the rest of the panel were no slouches either. Unfortunately, they spent more than half of the time describing in layman's terms how each of their websites work, and we never got to anything juicy. "On Digg, users rate up a story they find interesting by clicking the Digg button..."! Edupunk: Open Source EducationThe description of this panel really got me pumping: DIY teachers around the world are using open source course management systems, open access textbooks, and other open source tools to buck the chains and limitations of corporate education software. What the panel really turned out to be was a bunch of ineffectual academics having a cat fight over who was more ineffectual. They all tried to outdo one another with stories of how management at their university prevented them from having any impact, and the winner seemed to be the panelist who accomplished the least. Seriously.This was only topped by the first question from the audience, which opened with: "I've learned a new word at this conference, and I'm going to use it here: monetize..." Seriously? I now have a new rule for conferences: Stay away from all education topics. The ratio of people with opinions to people who can/are having impact is way too high. How to Create a Great Company CultureThis is a tough topic, and one in which there's no right answer or overarching theory. The only way to get data is to listen to anecdotes, and this session gave me a few more. Although to be fair, I probably could have spent the same hour reading blogs written by company founders and gotten more out of it. Sunday Keynote: Stephen Baker / Nate Silver InterviewInterviews with really passionate people are always a treat. Nate Silver fits the bill.From Flickr and Beyond: Lessons in Community ManagementI was baffled why Metafilter was invited to be on this panel. In a discussion of privacy policies, the director of operations from Metafilter said "We don't have one. We're not there yet." Despite obviously having the most to contribute, the representative from Youtube didn't share anything; his lawyer must have told him to keep his mouth shut. Overall this was let down.New Think for Old PublishersThis panel was deceptively described, and the audience was annoyed to find a group of publishers simply looking to scribble down suggestions rather than having a conversation about the industry. Fortunately, Clay Shirky was animated enough to heat things back up.Presenting Straight to the BrainRunning a panel on better ways to use slides and graphics where each panelist presents slides might seem a bit hubristic, not they pulled it off. Take home: Use your slides to tell a story.How to Protect Your Brand Without Being a Jerk!This powerhouse panel was interrupted a mere 15 minutes in by a self-described-artist-from-Europe who raised (and shook) his hand for 5 minutes until the moderator eventually gave in. His question: "Do I need to copyright my songs? No really, do I need to copyright each one?" This softball opened a pandora's box of stupid questions from audience members clearly unable to format their questions into that tricky search engine text box. Monday Keynote: Virginia Heffernan / James Powderly InterviewJames Powderly is a friend and deeply fascinating individual. I wish this interview had been longer so they could have gotten deeper into his motivations and experiences. Advertising is Entertaining - Who's Selling Out?I came out of this session thinking it was pretty good. However, on further reflection, since it was more conversation than lecture, and lots of people had the opportunity to speak their mind, I was just happy no one said anything particularly stupid. This should give you a sense of my expectations at this stage at SXSW.New Threats to New Media: Fair Use On TrialThis was an excellent panel, particularly because Jason Schultz ran a very tight ship, kept things moving, and prevented questions from derailing the session. In my opinion, all three videos shown were clear examples of fair use, and I would have appreciated one that was a little closer to the line, but the session overall was still both enjoyable and useful. Building Strong Online CommunitiesWhile too general to have any actionable items, this was still pretty good. It's also fun to hear Drew Curtis's irreverent opinion on community. Tuesday Keynote: Chris Anderson / Guy Kawasaki ConversationThis made me really look forward to Chris Anderson's coming book Free. Guy Kawasaki did a fantastic job moderating, especially with respect to mocking people who ask questions just to insert a pitch for themselves, and limiting meaningless follow-up "questions."Nom Nom Nom: The Secrets of Successful FoodbloggingGet a DSLR, all other rules of successful blogging apply.The parties and evening events were good. I enjoyed Dorkbot Austin and Plutopia, and still think often of the food at The Salt Lick. The Web Awards were surprisingly fun. We were up against some much bigger names, and Flickr won (which in my opinion, was the expected value; I use Flickr at least weekly, if not more). Baratunde Thurston emceed, and he kept it spirited and fast-paced. His interludes were funny, and when no one from Flickr showed up to claim their award, he claimed it for them. "I remember really wanting to share some photos online..." I've been to other conferences where the parties are fun, the talks are engaging, and you come away with a laundry list of actionable items that will make measurable improvements in your business (or life). The SXSW interactive conference has all the ingredients to make that happen, which is why it's so disappointing when it doesn't come together.
