Could someone use activated carbon to produce hyrdogen out of water extremely fast because of the huge amount of surface area? Or would that not matter?

Spiral Scented Coasters

So recently at a garage sale, I found this really cool coaster.  It is shaped to a spiral, smells like vanilla, and is "activated" by heat.    I just really like the idea and I haven't been able to find anything anywhere on how to make them. I have found a couple instructables on how to make scented drink coasters, but not like the one I have.  I don't know if it would be the same general idea, just a different method of construction. I have found a couple places  selling the same thing that I have, but I'm sure you understand when I say, I'd rather make it myself if I can. The website I found, so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about:  http://www.littlecraftcottage.com/scentedcoasters.html Thanks in advance!

No active partition error

I decided to try ubuntu on the p2, and each time I tried to install it, it got up to the root file system mount process, it stalls out, on both the 6.06 and 7.04 version. Now I can't even boot off the cd, it just fails at the cd boot and gives me a "Not found any [active partition] in HDD" then says " Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" I found this rather puzzleing as I just formated the disk on another computer and it's fine.

Sound activated LED?

Hi, need help with my electronics project. I would like to light up a set of LED's (about 20) in response to a microphone input using a 9V battery source. I have searched the internet for schematics but no luck. I only found LED's thatlight up at certian frequencies or light up depending on volume. All I need is to light up 20 LED's whenever a sound is detected on the microphone! Please help!

Sound Activated LED's

Good Afternoon everyone, A friend of mine asked me to help him build something and I sort of hit a snag in the process. I know how to make LED's flash to the beat of music but what he wants is so that way when there are sounds around him the LED lights flash with the sounds around him (Such as if he was at a party, the LED lights would flash with the beat of the music even though they weren't connected to it.) Is this possible and if so what would I need to build or get? Thank you! Sincerely, Khris

Sound activated switch

Hey, my friend is a drummer and he's trying to install LEDs inside each one of his toms that would come on when he hits the tom. He doesn't know anything about electronics so he asked me and I don't know much either so I'm asking all you awesome people at Instructables. What I want is a simple sircuit that will not cost me above £5 that will allow me to do what I mentioned above. I have a soldering iron and can solder stuff easily so I just need the parts and (preferably a stripboard) layout. He will be using a max of 16 red 2v 20mA LEDs in each tom so the circuit will have to be able to supply either approx. 32v 20mA if in series, or 2v 320mA if in pararell. So, any recommendations?

Need help to make a project Answered

I need to build a project where a proximity sensor of a person (1 - 3 ft) would cause a very small motor to press a plastic bottle once per cycle. The cycle should only be able to be activated once between 10 - 15 minutes.  The soft plastic bottle would be no more that 2 - 4 cm diameter 7 - 8 cm long with a tube connected to it's tip and the bottle would be inverted to allow gravity to allow the liquid to move down the tube. The idea is to get just 1 drop to drip from the tube. I would want the power source to be a rechargeable  AA 1.4v up to 8 - 9v rechargeable battery.  This will be my first electronics project so please keep it as simple as possible.

I'm working on a small-scale prototype toy and it would be nice to have the ability to apply a charge to a piece of material and have it flex or contract. I kind of see it working a bit like a mechanical solenoid (and that is a possible option here although they would have to be tiny!) in that if the material looks like ____________ to begin with, when you apply a charge to it it becomes like __/\__ (excuse the poor ascii art!)

The idea is that the mp3 remains on and playing but that when the pressure swicth is stepped on it closes the circuit so the music plays. Circuit/relay that senses when ac appliance is in use

Hello all, I am attempting to add some ambient lighting to my home theater system.  I would like the lighting to activate whenever the tv or receiver are switched on (these units are always on together). I am a novice tinkerer, who is capable of soldering and simple circuit design, but I am having trouble finding a way to activate the lights without opening (read: voiding the warranty) my receiver or television. What would be the easiest way to accomplish this? A few of my unformed ideas would be:      -A relay that could sense when a/c power is being consumed (aka, receiver/tv being switched on)      -Would some sort of hall effect sensor accomplish the above? I'm just not really sure how to tackle this one, any suggestions are appreciated.  My project priorities are (in order): 1) ease/simplicity of design, 2) the smaller the component size the better, 3) cost ---EDIT--- I'm not sure if this helps, but this item came to mind, a Small Engine Hour Meter http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=226358043&sellerid;=24561471  This item can sense the current to the spark plugs without a physical wire connection. (induction?)  I know that item is intended for dc use, but could one be adapted to AC?  Or does anyone know if the relatively low dc voltage signal to my speakers could be used to activate a product like this?  TIA

A 'simple' sound activated LED.

Soooooo, I don't have a whole lot of knowledge about electronics. But I'd like to make/have someone make a single LED bulb that lights up when a microphone recieves sound. I'd 'actually' like to fit a small microphone into a helmet's mouth section, and have an LED activated on the outside. If it's possible to incorporate a speaker on the outside as well, that'd be incredible. And even more-so, if it could change/amplify your voice on the way out, that'd be simply orgasmic.

Instructables that advocate illegal activity

I have seen a few 'ibles that blatantly promote illegal activity. The few I saw recently involved blatant theft. For instance, one showed how to bypass a lock to steal electricity. It's been up for some time (I flagged it) but things like this really shouldn't be allowed. I'm not a prude, and don't care about people doing drugs, or having sex, or doing whatever they want to their bodies, but I don't think 'ibles that show people how to, and suggest that it's a good idea to steal are a good thing for this site. I like this site, but I think this is bad for everyone.

I was wondering if anyone here knows of any activities that can be done with kids ranging from kindergarten up through high school.  The two that I like are: 'Robotic Hand':  Building a 'robotic' hand using normal household materials. (probably best suited for elementary or middle schoolers) 'Intelligent Paper': Basically a more CS-themed attempt to demystify AI (probably better for middle or high schoolers) They don't necessarily need to be all-encompassing, any suggestions related to any part of robotics are welcome

gentle touch activated sound?

I have a little toy that makes noise when you squeeze it that I want to give as a Christmas present, but tiny little hands have trouble doing the squeezing properly, so I want to do a little surgery on it so that the sound activates with just a gentle touch instead.  Such as if you flick it, pet it, pick it up... that sort of thing.  I know when I was little, we had a doll that was supposed to make noises when played with, but it was so sensitive that it would go off from just the blow of our AC.  My problem is, I've no idea what parts I need to do this.  Can anybody help point me in the right direction?  And I only have about a three inches to work in, so it needs to be fairly small. Thanks.

Sequential Loops for Pin Activation?

Hi, I am starting with Arduino and I am in need of some help. I am trying to sequentially activate 5 pins. I need each pin to be active for 20 seconds in a PWM manner. During their active period I want an arduino sensor to read out the signals emmited by each pin effector. So far I have no problems with the PWM or sensing module code. However I am not able to find how to correctly sequentially activate the pins. I used millis(), etc, but so far I was able to only activate / read the signals from the first pin effector.
