Hitchhiker's Guide Typewriter for Sale

The typewriter that Douglas Adams used to type out The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is up for sale. If you have $25257.94 it can be yours! The price is converted from 12,250 British Pounds. To be honest, I was hoping that the seller would be able to fit the number 42 in the price somewhere. I would buy it, but there are the eating and sleeping in houses things that I've grown accustomed to. Linkvia bbgadgets

the infinite improbability drive? Answered

I recently finished reading the hitchhiker's guide series. Douglas Adams is a genious! he and authors such as George Orwell, are commonly looked over by todays readers. anyways, on to my question. does anyone know the components required to construct an ifinite improbability drive, like the one from the books? (and for the ignoramous who decides to tell me that its fictional and to shut up, i rebut before you post with, i know, if you had any sense to know that before your reading this, you wouldn't post said comment.) but yeah, does anyone know? i am looking for great minds such as kiteman or gmjhowe, or maybe a less well-known person. whoever you are, thanks in advance.

Adam Savage Mentions Instructables in an interview

Albeit briefly, Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) , when asked for project suggestions for a 4.5 year old suggested instructables. Not really huge news, but I found it interesting. (He mentions it at about 26 minutes and 9 seconds in to the video). Not really sure what category this would go under, so I'm putting it here.

What would Douglas Adams do?

So I'm about to embark on a month long voyage across the US and A (well, pretty much the places JetBlue services) - here's a cross link: now, I'm left with a situation. I've never traveled for 1 month at a time (a week, at most, is my experience). And obviously packing light is a must (no problem). So that leaves me with a question....What would Douglas Adams Pack?1. A Towel - I'm claiming that one before the first 42 replies state so2. ?...What else and what would/do you pack? I've got clothing covered ;)

How to change CMOS to CCD on a DSLR. I'm adamant this is possible.?

There are many pros and cons to both CMOS and CCD respectively, but I'd like to experiment with the two anyway, involving hacking a DSLR camera, which hosts a CMOS image sensor (which uses rolling shutter) and changing this to a CCD (which is an instant shutter). As well as the technical changes, would there be other things to consider, like programming within the DSLR?

ADAM: 2009 movie about the realionship between a boy with Asperger's and the girl that moves in next door (upstairs) UPDATED....

Adam chronicles the relationship between a normal woman and a man with Asperger's Syndrome...Those with Asperger's, ...look at the world in ways that are fundamentally different...The easiest way to tell this story would be to resort to stereotypes and short-cuts and, to his credit, Mayer largely avoids these. A review Another review Update: The way I learned about this was through an interview on PBS radio in my area. UPDATE #2:  I have seen the movie, and I find a lot of it very accurate....but if you are looking for a nice neat "happily ever after" ending, it might not be for is realistic, and life doesn't always deal us "happily ever after". Just saying....

Wiring an indoor extension cord to a small switch?

Hi - I need to take an indoor extension cord like this and wire it to a switch like this. I'm assuming I can just cut one of the two wires within the extension cord and connect either end to a prong on the switch.  Actually, I'm almost positive that will work. The real question here: is it safe? So, will this switch be able to hand the electricity from the outlet running through it? Thanks, Adam

I need to make fake hipster glasses

Hello.  In two weeks, I need to look something like this guy: I've already got someone doing Jamie Hyneman.  The only problematic bit for me is the glasses.  See, I already wear glasses, and my frames aren't that thick.  So, in maximizing authenticity, I'd like to do a DIY-conversion for my glasses to make them look like Adam Savage's hipster glasses.  Here's my working hypothesis.  I get some kind of thick, lightweight, cut-able material and cut it into two parts, with a groove lining the inside.  Then I glue the two halves together, fitting around the frames of my current glasses. I'm thinking my best option for a material is thick posterboard - the stuff that's sort of foamy in the middle, with card paper on either side.  The foamy bit would make it easy to carve a groove and fit it around my glasses. Here are my current blueprints: Would love to fish for a few more ideas, though, before I dive headlong into this.  Are there any other materials that might do me better, or a better method altogether?  Input of any sort is appreciated!

Two days late, same as every year...

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.(John Adams)Well, happy late birthday, Younglings.
