Ads

I would have thought that having a Premium Membership, would give you the option of "No ads". Am I mistaken? Where would I opt out of the ads? They seem more prevalent recently.

Ad Blocking ads?

If I use the ad-block plug for firefox to block ads on instructables will this impact the amount of money they make from the ads? Are the ads hit based, or are they simply paid to embed them?

Banner ads

I am a pro menber and I have been seeing Banner and Sidebar ads for the past week or so. Is this now a feature of the site? I have tried different computers but the ads always come up. How can I remove them, the button works for a specific ad but new ads always come up starting the process over again?

New ads

Dont get me wrong here but the new ads in the middle of the instructables are really annoying. I will get use to them and I am glad instructables is getting some money. One thing I have found is that in general rss feeds dont have ads so I think I might start reading instructables in thunderbird or google reader. Another idea is that maybe there could be an ad free version of instructables for $10 bucks a year or something like that. I imagine that you could get a lot more money like that then with ads. Also I was wondering, does instructables get money every time I click on an ad or every time I buy something after clicking on the ad. Thanks Joe

Offensive Ads

Found this ad whilst browsing. I believe it is inappropriate for a family-oriented site (I know it's not you guys fault so don't think I'm angry at you) Ad: http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=65571160vj4.jpg (didn't post it here because I didn't want it popping up below this post)

Ads on homepage?!

I logged in to my pro membership account this morning and saw that there was not one, but several ads being displayed on the Instructables homepage.  The worst of them is a giant video ad promoting a new show at the top of the page!  Can anyone explain to me why I'm suddenly seeing ads even though I'm a pro member??  I know that the organization needs revenue, but they got it in the form of membership money from me, so I should't have to see these ugly ads. This disappoints me tremendously...

Popup Ads

I've noticed a popup ad that's been around for awhile now. The ad itself says something along the lines of taking a survey... I just got one on the homepage where the only ads I could spot were craftsman ones, if that helps. Its fairly prevalent, I'm surprised no one else has commented on it.

Inappropriate Ads

Hey, I had an inappropriate (in my opinion) google-ad show up. I was searching forums for "chat room" and an ad for Horny Swinger Sex Chat came up. The site was SwingerNet.com . Aside from the fact that I thought it was an ad for a sex-swing (which would at least be interesting), it really goes a bit beyond PG-13. Here's the URL: http://www.swappernet.com/sn/Freesignup.aspx?afl=6g_ssc24&gclid;=CIb94-uk25gCFQrAGgodwHJ-dw

Giant Ad

There's a huge National Geographic ad on just about every topic that takes up the whole page. So much that I have to scroll down just to see a title. Can we get this removed? I know it'll probably be gone after the premiere anyway, so I'd also like to suggest not approving these kinds of ads in the future.

Ad Problem

Recently when I visit random instructables, I come across an ad like the one I have attached. It plays an audio clip about a man reviewing the movie Twilight: New Moon and it lags my browser to the point that I have to forcibly end the browser session. When I click on the ad, I get sent to google.com. It is always the same ad, but never on the same page. I'm not sure if it is a bug, but there has to be something wrong here. Any feedback on what this ad is, or if it is meant to do that, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. ****Please post all new virus reports on the new official virus problem topic here!****

Inappropriate Ads

Hey, I had a porn ad come up while I was looking at "Jobs Available at Instructables". It didn't have any names or words, just gyrating girls in thongs, and a place to click to enter. I'm at work, and ads like that could get me in trouble! At home they could get me in trouble with Mrs. Skunkbait! I promise I'm not being prudish (hey, I like thongs as much as anybody), but that was just too much. Can you see if you can do something about that? Thanks. - Skunkbait

How do I stop the Ads that this site randomly sets for me?!? In my joining data I specified I was in NH, now I am targeted by political propaganda ALL OVER THE SCREEN. Popup ads?

Autoplaying ads

The new site design is quite nice, though I didn't have any issue with the old site. However, I have a real big problem with one feature of the new site. The auto-playing advertising videos are annoying! Not only is this rude, but it violates the rules of web design 101. It's just bad form. Viewers should always have the choice whether to start media or not. It's particularly annoying when you're logged in as a paid Pro user. Please fix this and the new site will be great. Thanks!

Signal-to-Noise Ratio Not Good

Dear Instructables.com: Look, I respect Instructables.com's right to make a buck as much as that of any other site that proffers user-supplied content, so please don't misunderstand this comment.  I'm not decrying the presence of ads on Instructables.com. I'm bothered nonetheless.  Until recently, when I landed on the Instructables.com home page, I would see two columns of fascinating, deliciously creative projects.   When I visit the site now, I find that the page is dominated by ads.   Dominated?   Yes.  Now I have to scroll before I see *any* actual Instructables.  Now in the interests of full disclosure, I'll confess that I've got a mere 800 pixels of vertical resolution to work with, but come on folks, no Instrucables above the fold?  Really?  And I've noticed with some dismay a growing number of featured projects from external commercial sources like This Old House (of which I am a *huge* fan, btw). I'm not calling for a moratorium on ads on Instructables, or anything absurd like that, but I do feel that the kind of projects that make this site truly great (those from individual makers, crafters, and builders) is beginning to get crowded out.  Keep the ads, by all means, but please keep the spirit of personal creativity in focus as this amazing site evolves. Thank you.

Sleazy ads are disappointing.

I'm disappointed by your sleazy American Apparel ads featuring half-naked women. It is gratuitous and uncalled for. As a father I am doubly disappointed because I know that my children have frequented your site as well. The thing is, I really like your site and have told people about it. Now I find myself considering blocking your site at my home and at my children's schools. Look, I'm not a prude--far from it. But your site seems to be migrating from classy to trashy, and that really disappoints me. I would expect this behavior from mens magazine sites, but I thought you folks had a little more class than that.

Roll over ads with sound

The "roll over "ads that have talking messages and sound are most annoying. So bad, they will cover an area I want to click. Some of them won't close until they have there say.  I was so turned off that I closed the page and left. I hope instructables will see the negative effect these have and put an end to it. Two of them popped up at the "6 cent throwie" and at the "contact us" page. I believe one was titled Hangover Days and some other concerning Microsoft.

How do I stop banner ads?

Question by rogandglo 3 years ago  |  last reply 3 years ago

Ads obscure/overlay forum comments

I'm having increasing incidents where the right hand side of comment text is covered over by the right-hand-side Advertisements. Usually this happens when there are lots of indented replies, where it is sort-of understandable, but in this example it is happening on a top-level comment: https://www.instructables.com/community/Howto_choose_RGB_leds_/It is particularly annoying that if I make my browser window widerl nothing moves to the new window margins. Surely the left part of the Instructables banner should be all the way at the left of the window, and the ads should be all the way on the right?I see this with both Firefox 3.0.4 and Safari 3.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.5.5 (although in Safari, the ads are "transparent.")

Advertisements

Some of these new ads are incredibly obnoxious.  When I came to the site today, I was greeted with a rather loud recording of "Wouldn't It Be Nice", that wouldn't go away until I managed to find the tiny gray X on a slightly lighter gray bar, on the bottom of the screen.  Now there's one from the Washington Sports Club that expands to three times its normal size whenever I mouseover it - and it's right below the topic bar.  This is obnoxious; if these horribly intrusive advertisements continue, I will definitely stop using this site.  I've been a fan for years, but this is just too much. ...and now that I look around a bit more, that expanding ad is on just about every single page.  Get rid of it, please.

This is in response to pro accounts...

This suggestion would either eliminate the necessity for pro accounts or reduce the price to pay for one. It wouldnt bother some of us a bit if you put ads on the left hand corner of the page as well as the very bottom of it, below the copyright link. Also, I notice that there are no ads when you make/edit a new instructable or forum topic. You could put some there. If this isnt possible with you guys, or you just dont want to do it, I understand. I am not against pro accounts, But some others are, and I cant really afford one myself (I cant even get a stinkin job due to child labor laws).

Video and audio ads

We typically only allow ads to contain audio if the audio is user-initiated. Within the last hour, I noticed ads from Woolite, AirWick, and Lime Away with audio that started as soon as the ad loaded. I apologize for these, they should not be on the site. They are coming through one of our indirect ad networks, and I think I have stopped them (though it might take half an hour from now until the change takes effect). However, if you see any more, please let me know. If you ever see ads that don't fit with our values, make a note of the URL they link to, and where they are coming from by looking for an "Ads by Google" or by looking at this Instructable to see which network is serving them:https://www.instructables.com/id/Instructables_Ad_Networks/

Malware Mobile Ads

The mobile site for Instructables has been presenting rather unpleasant popup advertising. This twitter thread captures it rather well: https://twitter.com/winkleink/status/897077681443024899 Attempting to close these, or go back, results in more pop-up. The instructables content cannot actually be got to. It's not that users don't appreciate the need for ads. advertising maker sites - places for buying stuff, perfectly cool, and likely to get attention. Pop ups like this really make makers not want to avoid Instructables on phones. Seen on both Android and IOS.

Persistent Rednecks and Rockets Ad

The Redneck and Rockets ad, which takes up 100% of the page, cannot be dismissed. I PAY FOR A MEMBERSHIP and don't want to be forced to see an ad EVERY SINGLE time I visit a page. If this is the case, refund my membership and let me deal with advertising.

Video in the ads is killing my bandwidth!

I know instructables pays the bills with targeted ads. That's cool, and useful. No problems there. The problem is putting a 5 minute video in the ads. That gets downloaded when I look at an Instructable. I'm on a satellite link, and my bandwidth costs me quite a bit. If I'm going to have to pay to download a video to look at an Instructable, I either won't look at it, or I'll install ad blocking software. If I want to look at videos I'll go to Vimeo, or YouTube.  Don't let poor choice in ads drive away the users.

Hate new Popup Video Ads

I was just startled by the popping up of some football video ad. Pretty misplaced if you ask me. But just jarring and unappreciated. I know that Instructables has to support itself somehow. Just wish there were a less jarring and invasive way to do that.

Pro users receiving banner ads?

For a long while, the only ads I was seeing on Instructables pages were internal -- mostly examples of highly rated/featured I'bles, or contest announcements. Starting today (24 Mar 2010), I am seeing banner and sidebar ads.  This isn't a big deal, except that a lot of them have been those really annoying rollover-giant-box type.  This makes it quite cumbersome to navigate on the page, and in particular, to do anything where your mouse has to go near the masthead.

ads appearing in pro version. AGAIN

Ads pop up when using the embedded link to jump from the instructable email to any particular instructable shown in the email. My avatar is up, showing that I am logged in, yet the ads are still there. In fact, the whole experience is very non-Pro: won't show all steps at once and ads are all over the place. Logging out and logging back in doesn't help because finding the particular instructable becomes difficult. Logging in and then switching back to the email to click the particular instructable used to be the work around, but now it just opens a new window as if I am not logged in.
