A week in a proper car.

I've been driving Womble for exactly a week now, and some things have occurred to me. I thought I'd share them, in no particular order.I enjoy driving again.Because I'm driving, not steering. No power steering, no servo brakes, I am in touch with what the car is doing every second I'm driving. I do something, and I get instant feedback. I'm suddenly redeveloping all the good driving habits I used to have - looking further ahead and watching traffic more, correct hand-position on the wheel, feeding the wheel through my hands as I turn, slowing with gears before brakes. It's a cliche, but it's seat-of-the-pants driving.I drove Kitewife's Focus a couple of days ago, it was a disaster! Taps the brakes, do an emergency stop - steer with two fingers, weave all over the road. There's no feedback, nothing to tell me by feel exactly how much braking I'm doing, or how fast the wheels are turning. I had to look at the dials to check the speed and watch the revs before changing gear.Modern cars, I have decided, are only one step short of video games.Maybe that's part of the reason for the rise in roadrage? There's no need to take pride or care, because the car does it all for you. Spend enough money, and the only thing that will kill you is if you drive at a tree. Even that may not be possible with radar-triggered brakes soon to become more common. If you have abdicated all responsibility for your safety to a mindless mechanism, who do you blame if something goes wrong? Where do you direct your anger? The only target left is the other driver.I seem to have joined a sub-culture.I'm not the only driver of a proper Mini in my area. I pass two or three every day. Amongst others, I've seen a white one, striped pink, with a bubbly blonde driving. I've seen a 70s Traveller in immaculate condition. Several jobbing Minis, in every-day-driving state, and a Mini wedged full of teenage lads, fully kitted out for racing, roll-cage and all.Every single one of them waved, flashed their lights or otherwise said "hello" as we passed. I have never seen drivers of other kinds of car do that. It's pretty good, getting a friendly wave from a stranger. It lifts your day, puts a smile on your face. It's like we share a happy secret. Minis attract comment more than cars that cost fifty times as much.If people see a Ferrari in the car park, they might nudge each other and make admiring comments, but if they see a Mini, they come over, say hello. On Saturday, a huge hairy rocker, returning to his big Japanese family car, children in tow, left his children in his car, and came over for a chat about the surprisingly roomy interior of my Mini, and an idle chat about the type of engine (single-point injection, if you're wondering).People might wish they could afford a supercar, but they are genuinely jealous of people who actually own a proper Mini.Everybody has a Mini in their closet.I'm not really a petrol head, and I don't work with petrol heads, but suddenly everybody wants to talk about cars. They all seem to have had an adventure in a Mini, their own or a friend's. Half of them regret having sold their Mini years ago.OK, so the old Minis don't meet modern safety rules. They're slow, utterly lacking in luxuries (my heater has two settings - on or off), but if somebody started building them new, using the original molds for the panels and frames (they still exist), and charged five or six thousand pounds a pop, they would make an absolute fortune.

Ouch, bad week for me.

This week pretty much sucks so far. To fill everybody in, I bought myself a nice little gift for my birthday, a 100 inch projector TV. I'm still working on the setup, even though my birthday was in July. Things take time, unfortunately. I was planning on hooking up my desktop PC to the projector, to show pictures and whatnot, it'll be my DVD player too. I have an ATI remote wonder that'll work perfect for it. I already have it integrated into the surround sound, so all I had to do is get a 25 foot VGA cable to run from the PC to the projector. Or so I thought, until it came across my mind that I wouldn't be able to use my desktops monitor. I thought I would just make a solid state switch, but unfortunately, a VGA cable has 15 pins - I don't think they make a dual throw 15 pole switch. So the backup plan was to get a second video card, to use in conjunction with the onboard graphics to do dual monitors. I can make a simple app, and use one of the programmable buttons on the remote to switch which is the primary display. So I went shopping, and I asked a friend what he thought of this one I wanted to buy. How convenient, that he just happened to get a new one, and he would sell me his old one, which just happened to be PCIE x16, for $50.. which is less than what I was looking at, and triple the quality. I buy it, and wait 2 days from it to go from San Fransisco to my house, in central MA. I install it, it works! Yay! I install the drivers, go out for a little bit, come back... dead computer. The thing was a goner, the PS blew, and took the motherboard with it. So I called up compaq... 20 days out of warantee. Great! At that point, I thought it was just the PS. It's 300 watts, running 2 hard drives, 2 CD drives, a 3.3ghz Celeron, and an ATI x1600 graphics card. So I go shopping, pick up a 500 watt one. Come home and install it... same shit. So I knew the motherboard was blown. I look it up, a new motherboard is $200. That's how much I paid for the damn computer! So it's ebay time, I find and win the same model for $250. So yeah, so far, the cost of this week is $350. $100 from the PS. So I put the computer back together, put it on the desk. I wake up the next morning to guess what? Look at the first picture. That's right, the glass desk shattered. The desktop was on the other side, thank god, but guess what got screwed up in that nice, conveniently timed breakage? - The new PS (I exchanged it, but I had to drive an hour to Circuit City) - One hard drive, 2 weeks old. - $90 - Old school soldering iron - costed me $80 back in the day. - A whole stack of DVD-RWs - $30 - A stock of CD-Rs - $15 - A pressure gauge from my Pneumatic cannon instructable - $10 - A bunch of misc electronic parts - $20 - My damn desk! - $120 So far, $715 total. Murphy's law in action right there.

Extend logged in time to at least a week

If at all feasible, could you please extend the logged in timeout to be at least a week? I get the newsletter once a week and I click on links to the articles I'd like to read more. I then go back and read them only to find I have to log in and then refresh every article I want to read. I'm sure the refreshing takes up more bandwidth and memory than keeping my session in place for seven days or so. I have checked the 'keep me logged in' option but it only works for a couple of days. Thanks!

Next week: 5 Instructables in 5 days

I have a backlog of Instructables that I need to clear out of my office and my brain. All of which are only an hour or two away from completion, not including the write-up. One has been waiting to be completed for over a year now and all it needs is a little tape and hot glue! It's reached the tipping point. No, that already tipped and fell all over me and I've been pretending not to notice as I wade to and from my office chair. My self-imposed deadline is for next week. My goal is to publish one a day Monday through Friday. I figure that that will make me finish them once and for all and get started on the next batch of projects that I've been meaning to do. The list is getting long. So... who's with me? Anyone else have some projects that are thisclose to being finished? You don't need to do one each day, but maybe just one or two.

how can i become as good as possible in basball whithin a week?

I know the basic rules, and we'll play by hitting the ball off a tee (like in golf just much higher). It's for a sportsday of the whole college. Any class attends in two disciplines in a tournament against all ther classes and the teachers team. This year it's football and baseball. (last year was basketball and swimming, extremely funny). Now i'm pretty bad at the moment and i'm in my final year, so i don't want to be the jackass who screws up for the seniors :P I'm a pretty good runner on short distances and the field won't be huge (good advantage), but i'll need to hit the ball far enough to run, that is my major problem. (already read a tutorial from this side, but it wasn't that helpful), so i'm very glad for any tricks, ideas, instructions or whatever. thanks in advantage, oliver from switzerland (yes, the guys with the evil tax-stealing banks XD)

To All my Friends and Acquaintances

At this moment, I am awaiting for the doctor's office to open so I can give them another call. My back has been hurting me since the Friday before Labor Day weekend, and getting increasingly worse since. The insurance I have was only allowing for pain medication, and then finally approved an X-ray which, of course, did not show anything concerning my formerly herniated disks. I have been awaiting the insurance company's approval to get the MRI that will tell the doctor what is REALLY going on with my back. If this gets delayed until I am paralyzed, the insurance company will have to be held responsible, as it would be because of their delay. Since I am having difficulties even sitting here in front of the computer, I will keep this short. If I stop posting for a 24 hour period, you can assume I have gone to the hospital for an operation (which will not happen before they examine an MRI). I don't know what else to do......but at this point, the pain meds don't even work well enough to allow me to sleep. Just wanted to get an FYI out here, so you didn't worry if I do become unable to get to a computer for a few days or weeks. BTW: I will be going completely crazy without being able to get in here, you all are like my extended family. First update: MRI has been taken, but will hear nothing before Friday or perhaps *sigh* Monday. Second update: MRI showed a definitive bulge (herniation) pressing heavily against my spinal column. This time around, it will probably have to be removed and the bones fused to keep me going... UPDATE 2.491 - Supplemental Nothing will be accomplished during the weekend, as far as my back is concerned. At least we have found a reasonable combination of meds to keep the pain at bay until I get to see the Neurosurgeon (and hopefully, there will be no need to see the Oncologist). UPDATE 3 - : It is very early in the morning (5:16 am) and I can not sleep. I have to await the doctor's call hoping it will come before my pulmonary appointment ( C-pap refitting). And if not, hoping I can get a refill on the pain meds that have been just barely keeping the pain below the screaming all the time level. So I can tolerate the wait until I get to see the neurosurgeon. UPDATE 3.274 - supplemental: I will be out and about (different doc appts.) most of this morning and into the afternoon. I will check in as soon as I know something. UPDATE 4: I have an appointment to see the neurosurgeon's BUT it isn't for another 6 days or so. This is very aggravating that something this painful and this life-invasive (keeping me from work) can't be taken care of sooner. UPDATE 4.129 - Supplemental: A followup letter from the doctor informs me of another reason the pain is greater this time, then last time: I have two herniated discs. *sigh* The fun of aging just never ends, does it? UPDATE 5: The therapy IS helping relieve the pressure on the disc by  supporting the spine through stronger muscles.  I am getting relief finally, and should be back to work Nov. 6th, at the latest. UPDATE 6: I had a minor relapse on Oct. 30th, on the right hand side, but things seem to be back on track now again. Thank you all for your support ! Some information about what MAY be done next. Final link Below is an illustration...

Hey guys, in in latest iOS, using the latest feedly news reader, I noticed last week that the view all button just reloads the current page rather than a new page containing all steps.  I.e. If I'm looking at steps 1-3 of 10, view all steps just reloads the 1-3 page.  I am not signed in while using feedly.  When using mobile safari, I am signed in, but it seems to be loading all steps by default.  (Which I love btw) many thanks, steven

A week of weeks, these last 4 days have been.....

I hope I am not coming off lately as just complaining about life in general, but just letting those who know me well enough to want to know, how things are going. This has just been ONE OF THOSE WEEKS (and it isn't over yet ! ).  Monday and Tues, I had to help my wife prep for cataract surgery (two days off, but not really much of a "vacation"), Wed.  she still needed assistance in picking things up off the floor when she'd drop them....and today, I had to go in and meet my Mom at the Ear doctor (she's been around 60% deaf since early childhood, but never wanted to learn ASL).  They cleaned out her ears, checked the hearing aid, and put fresh batteries in it.....then since none of that helped, they checked her hearing. A 120 db beep was inaudible to her.   And, being quite advanced in age, and slowly slipping into senility, she is unable to accept this "new" condition.  It is very disheartening to not be able to help or do anything at all to help. I know this is not really a "social" arena, and is more geared towards DIY then just airing greivences,  but I thought I would share this one thing and hope I didn't irritate too many of you all out there. Thanks for reading....

Which chemical have I made? Answered

After my experiment which turned out to be lead oxide, I did something else. I bought a lump of Calcite, and found out it dissolves in acid. Therefore, I couldn't resist breaking off some lumps and putting those in vinegar. For at least a week, there was no significant change in the container, but after another week, all of the vinegar was gone, and no sign of the calcite lumps either. only a white and a pink residue. What I want to know is, is this Calcium? Or something else?

Hey, All! I'm Relocating! :D

A select few of you who stalk me visit my persona often may have noticed that I changed my location. Well, the reason for that is that my family is on the move again. When I joined Instructables in 4th Quarter 2006, I lived in Texas. Soon after that, we moved to Georgia and now we're off to Florida, from whence I hail. The house we'll be moving into is by far the greatest I've yet to live on. It's situated on a canal that leads out to the Atlantic, it has a pool, two stories, a second master bedroom that I get to share with my brother, and it just looks really cool. Built in the 60's, this house has some serious personality. With every move comes a new school. Mom wants to send me to a Catholic school again (ugh). At least this time it's co-ed, but it still doesn't have a marching band, which is the #1 reason why I prefer a public education.Well, guys, don't freak out if I go MIA over the next few weeks; moving's a contact sport and there's a lot involved if you're not familiar with the process (Eric knows what I mean, don't you? ;-) Dad wants to leave by Friday, and we just starting packing yesterday, so wish us luck. See you all later!
