alternatives to fiberglass

Hey guys im building an enclosed recumbent motorcycle and i am a bit stuck. im making the outer skin. to get a working aerodynamic shape, complex curves and all i want to use some flexible sheet which i can connect to the strong points of the motorcycle. i am thinking of using that polypropilene chicken wire, and i wonder if it would be good enough to be the base of the fairing and put fibreglass on top. my brother wants to use cedar strips as a base and cardboard strips mounted over them and fibreglass the resultant mess. then bondo the lot. any ideas. i am not describing this very well. a single sheet of a flexible matting will save me the trouble of making a mould of the fairing. thanks guys.

Alternative to keyboard

On top is a joystick like an NES joystick. It registers 8 different directions: up, down, left, right, and the in-betweens of those and is controlled by the thumb. Then there are 4 buttons, one for each finger. The joystick replaces the trackpad of a laptop and hopefully is also 'clickable'  to act as a 'left click button. I'm not sure what would do the right click button. Combinations of button presses and joystick directions would replace the keys on a keyboard. I only have the use of my right hand. I initially thought of this as a device for handicapped people like myself, but it would also be good for people lying in bed. The concept maybe could be made into a cell phone case with physical buttons that would allow people to text without looking at their phones. The device is a lot like the nintendo wi remote, but not quite. Maybe a wii remote could be hacked to make a prototype. I wouldn't know how to do that and I wouldn't know how to program it, that's why I'm posting, to see if someone could tell me what kind of skills/knowledge would be needed to make this idea happen. Any suggestions or offers to help are welcome. Thank you!

Our main source of  energy right now is nuclear energy. Although Nuclear energy  might seem to be a reliable source of energy, it is not.  Nuclear energy is not a reliable source of energy  because you need to extract Uranium ore from the earth's core which might seem as a good  source of Uranium it is not. This is not a endless supply  of uranium because it will eventually  run out of uranium .   So what can we do to solve this issue? The answer is alternative energy.  Alternative energy  is energy that can be renewed  and that is reliable. One solution is replacing Uranium fuel rods in a reactors core with Tritium. Tritium can be used  as a substitute for uranium because it has the same properties as uranium except that it has a shorter  half life.  Tritium is made by fusing solid  Hydrogen With Lithium  in a Farnsworth reactor.  This also has its problems one major  problem is the radiation and heat that is generated during the process  of fusion. Tritium can be then used as a fuel  pellet for a Nuclear reactor when it is mixed with Deuterium which is a solid. Tritium is also a good fuel pellet because it only has a life span of about 12.4 years, then  it decays into Helium 6 which is very harmless. Uranium on the other hand is not  safe because it has a life span of about 2000 years and it gradually decays into other radioactive material such as Thorium, neptunium, ECT.... This is Called the Uranium - Thorium cycle. The tritium is also ecologically friendly because it  can be made from H1 which is found in water H2O.  H1 is called Portion and is extracted through a process called electrolyses in which water is charged by a D.C current.

Alternatives to kite power

I was looking though my old MAKE magazines, and found the schematics for a Kite Aerial Photography rig. For those unfamiliar with the term, it's a camera attached to a kite that allows for aerial photographs to be taken remotely. However, I live in Texas, and the only time the wind blows here is when it rains. And rain means lightning. So, rather than risk electrocution, I'd like to come up with some alternative methods of lift. I was considering a large helium balloon (like a weather balloon), but I was wanting something that I could say I made myself. Then I considered hot air, but I'm not sure how large a homebrewed hot air balloon would have to be to lift a camera. Any suggestions?

New ball alternator

Hey I was thinking about having a new ball alternator well at least a idea. I made a model on this knex modeling thing. Well how It SHOULD work is that it is encased in a cage where the ball falls down and a motor will be turning the fan like things. Underneath the fan there might be 1-4 ball path. The fan will move and thus it will make the ball fall randomly in one of the 4 paths. I'm running out of pieces and I don't want to take apart my ball machine that i'm making so you guys can try to make this is you want. It might also be hard to see the yellow rod behind the red one.

I recently tore into a couple printer-scanners looking for stepper motors. Unfortunately all I found were some DC motors that seem to be tied into some sort of sensor that acts like a step counter. As a side note, I have a very limited understanding of IC function, think of me as having lived a purely analog lifestyle.

alternative to conductive thread.

Ok guys, so i was finishing up a project with my guitar, and i ended up replacing the strings. so i though to myself... what can these be used for. I decided to use them in a project im working on involving a belt, and regular wire would not work well. So, i weaved the guitar string throughout the belt, like you would with conductive thread, and its very very strong, and also flexible. And since its meant to withstand a beating it should last nearly forever. The strings i found to work best are the 3 smallest ones, E B and G, the others are too rigid to bend as much as needed. in the picture that is the third string, so it is more rigid then the first on would be, and i found it to work excellently for what i needed it to.

High Frequency Alternators

Look at a picture of some arcs from a common spark-gap Tesla Coil, and then compare it to the arcs from a solid-state. What makes the two so different? The difference comes from the Solid-State Tesla Coil to operate in CW (constant wave) mode. This means that its power supply is uninterrupted, whereas in a spark-gap type, power is being switched on and off hundreds of times per second. If the output terminal of a CW coil doesn't have a brake out point, no corona or spark will occur. For anyone who's investigating wireless power transmission or Tesla's version of radio, this is a very helpful feature, since corona only wastes energy. And if it does have a brake out point, it can create some pretty interesting spark displays, as I mentioned above. An arc to a grounded object increases the current in the arc to such a point that it turns into a white-hot "flaming" discharge. All-in-all, a CW type coil is a pretty interesting kind to observe. But solid-states can be pretty difficult and annoying to build, and expensive as well. Since solid-state technology obviously was not available to Tesla, he found a different way to operate his coils in CW mode- a generator that was specially designed to produce radio-frequency power. He had originally created it for high-frequency arc lighting. Today, I have seen absolutely no coils run by a high frequency alternator. Of course, an alternator would be admittedly difficult to build, but since it could probably deliver more power than a solid-state coil, it would be worth it. Does anyone know if there are any companies that still make these alternators? Would anyone be interested in recreating it? Should we even bother? Thank you for listening. Peace!

Probably some older versions are free or cheap, or there are any other programs? I looks like I'm only going to use it in the summer as they probably should give something to students... Alternative scrolling methods

Here's one to challenge your creativity. I read a lot of blogs, engadget, lifehacker etc... and these are mainly long pages of text and images. I've become bored of using a plain ole mouse wheel to scroll down and so i'm looking to make something overall cooler or easier to use. Note the use of OR before reading the next bit. I've had an idea of one method. Get one of those realistic fake cats that breathes and put the scroller in it's back. Then you can cradle it in your arms Dr. No style and stroke it's back, all the while scrolling down a page of your choice. I also thought of somehow making the whole right side of my desk a massive scrollbar, but it would be a bit complicated for my liking. So what do you think? Do you have any good ideas for ways to scroll down a page? Think everyday actions that involve some sort of scrolling motion, and keep it work safe.

Alternative Photography Project

I am currently in the Advanced Photography class at my high school. One of the assigned projects is simply titled "Alternative Photographic Technique." Basically, we have to create an image without using 35mm film (not digital, either). The specific techniques that he recommends are:Photogram-arranging objects directly on the photo paper, without using a camera at allHolga- The teacher has a few Holga cameras with 120 film for class use to take artistically lousy imagesPinhole Camera- If you don't know what this is, you probably can't answer my question anyway.Cyanotype- a special emulsion is painted on watercolor paper, then exposed in sunlight under a large transparency. Search "cyanotype" to see what it is.Polaroid image transfer- an image taken with a Polaroid Two-Step camera is transferred from the film to watercolor paper-looks cool, but expensiveCan anyone suggest other interesting ideas? I'd like to keep it simple and inexpensive, and I have to have 8"x10" total printed image.Weissensteinburg? Are you there?Edit 5-12-08: I have printed some 5x7s with my cool new technique. I matted them today, and I turn them in on Thursday.

Alternate Login Bug

I just found this bug today when I used the logout button to check something. I tried to log back in using the bar at the top and it did not work, I tried this multiple times. Then I went to a random forum topic to post a topic to see if I could log in from there, it did not work. Then I clicked on a link I had for my "You" page and I was able to get to it. I then left my "You" page to go to the forums and I was instantly logged out again. I tried this multiple times to log back in and eventually I tried closing my browser (latest version of FireFox) and opening it up again and going to the login page to see if it would work and it did. So, can anyone explain this because I am not sure what is going on, I think it has to do with the login cookie that keeps members logged in. Anyone want to help? UPDATE (2/8): The problems seems to have gone, it must be one of the bugs that people get every once in a while.

Cheap plexiglass alternative

So i was going to make a desk. I was gonna make it about 2x3 and make the top out of two pieces of plexiglass, with about a 1 inch hollow area between them. I was gonna put some lights in that area. However, Plexiglass is costing a bit more than i want to spend. so I found this:;=10051&catalogId;=10053 Its ALOT cheaper. However, can it support a decent amount of weight probably? No ones gonna be sitting on the desk or anything. I would say NEVER more than 50 pounds on it, but 25 is probably gonna be the maximum, and not even that most of the time. (just gonna have my laptop and stuff on it, maybe some textbooks). And im assuming a blue light LED would shine through it fine..I kind of want the frosted look (would sand it down a little bit to get rid of the "bubbles") to give it an effect similar to the lights in this: except without the notifications and stuff.

alternative ignition of thermite

Allright im looking for information on a number of different ways to ignite thermite. sure we've all heard of magnesium and yes it's usually third or fourth time is the charm also potassium permanganate which is pretty cool too and the ever popular sparkler of course lots of companies have taken out the magnesium chlorates and perchlorates from these sparklers and are now selling crappy ones without hazmat fees for them so they don't work worth a crap. i read an article from a guy stating he used simple visco fuse to light it even though ive heard it won't work but perhaps it depends on the mesh as in much finer. i use the dark german aluminum about 625 mesh and it will coat any and everything it touches. really though guys let's come up with some ways to lite thermite outside of tradition and share these methods of doing so along with how to obtain materialsin conventional and unorthodox ways because without frst time reliable ignition it's just no fun. also the first fire mix, much like the thermite ignition mix at united nuclear what exactly is it made of and how are some ways the monetarily cahllenged can obtain it and of course the not so challenged.

best way to test an alternator?

We are having some electrical problems with a john deere tractor, and received an error codes 61f, 018, 023, 026, 049, and 051. These error codes are not cleared when the problem goes away, and from memory, the first few meant low fluids at some point, and one of the later ones is indicating the output of the alternator is outside of normal operating range. The problems experienced: * The tractor would start, and "lunge" forward but never actually go any go further than 4 feet. * reverse does absolutely nothing. * hydraulics work fine * Engine would start in any gear, when it should only start in neutral. * Replaced a few dead fuses and a missing relay but these did not change anything important. * oil / hydraulic fluid was very low, we fixed that. * this lunging behavior was intermittent before, only requiring some wiggling of the gear shift. * requires jumping in order to get started. Does not always crank fast enough by itself to start on its own. Today, we plan to test the alternator to see what's going on there, It is rated to deliver 115 charging amps to a huge 12V battery. what is the best way to test this with a basic multimeter or some basic around the house parts? I measured the voltage across the battery rise from 12V up to 14V, so it would seem that it's fine, but I'm going to take that with a grain of rice. Is there a better way to measure the alternator?

Westward Group Alternatives: Alternative Energy the Next Big Play?

Alternative energy plays have been around for decades, including Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ/BLDP), a maker of hydrogen fuel cells that went public in 1993. The stock traded as high as $100.00 as a speculative investment opportunity in early 2000 but was unable to break into the automotive market. It is currently drifting at the $4.00 level. However, what Ballard was hoping for is now materializing for battery-powered automaker Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ/TSLA), which has built a superhighway of charging stations across the U.S. and is expanding into Europe and China. Tesla is a great story and a decent possible investment opportunity. Yet it’s not only vehicles that demand alternative sources of energy; we also see demand coming from numerous applications and, in some cases, manufacturing facilities. The demand for alternative energy can be based on wind, solar, or water and has led to the development of a strong solar industry as an investment opportunity. A small-cap that has been exciting the stock market while producing sizzling gains for speculators has been Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ/PLUG), a developer of hydrogen fuel cells that power forklifts and other devices. The stock traded as low as $0.32 over the past 52 weeks, surging to $6.37 on Thursday morning after reporting strong results. Plug Power has been on my technical analysis screens for some time, as the stock consistently breaks higher. If interested, I would suggest investors look to this stock on weakness for a volatile speculative investment opportunity. Another possible investment opportunity that may interest investors in the alternative energy space is FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ/FCEL), which has a market cap of $616 million. The stock has traded as low as $1.12 and as high as $4.74 over the past 52 weeks. The current price is halved at $2.37, so there’s a potential aggressive investment opportunity here. FuelCell is a developer of fuel cell solutions by way of its stationary “Direct FuelCell” power plants, built to deliver ultra-clean, efficient, and reliable green power. The process involves harnessing the energy of renewable biogas from wastewater treatment and food processing. Clients are varied and include commercial, industrial, government, and utility businesses. Sectors served include the food and beverage, manufacturing, hospital and prison, college and university, hospitality, utilities, and wastewater treatment areas. FuelCell says its energy produced is up to two times more efficient than fossil fuel plants. The company’s plants produce output ranging from 300 kilowatts (kW) to 2.8 megawatts (MW) and are expandable to more than 50 MW. There are currently more than 50 plants worldwide that have generated more than 300 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. FuelCell is expanding in Southeast Asia, including South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, which the company sees as an investment opportunity. Revenues are estimated to rise 7.2% to $201.16 million in FY14 followed by 22.6% to an estimated $246.54 million in FY15, according to Thomson Financial. I suggest investors keep an eye on a company like FuelCell, as this volatile investment opportunity has tremendous upside if it can deliver results.
