Coming to America...!

#1 Son, now more properly known as Roger-X is on his way to America. He's going to New York and environs with his Uncle.I dropped him off with his grandparents this morning, and he flies at stupid o'clock tomorrow morning. If you see an over-excited 12 year old in a blue coat, introduce yourself as an Instructabler - it would blow his mind.(His photo is here - he's taller now, but you can't tell that from a photo.)

Hacker to be extradited to America

A Briton accused of hacking into top secret military computers has lost a Law Lords appeal against being extradited to stand trial in the US.Glasgow-born Gary McKinnon could face life in jail if convicted of accessing 97 US military and Nasa computers. He has admitted breaking into the computers from his London home but said he was seeking information on UFOs. Link to BBC website.According to McKinnon (in the video included in the article), he used a simple password hack ("blank password scanning") to look for UFO-related technology. In response, the US are using (abusing?) anti-terrorism laws to extradite McKinnon for trial. If found guilty, McKinnon could face life in jail. American officials involved in this case have stated that they want to see him "fry".Controversy abounds in this case:Britain has no choice regarding the extradition, because they have signed a treaty with America regarding the extradition of terrorist suspects. America, however, has yet to sign the treaty they are exploiting in this case.If an American citizen committed the same offenses against UK military computers, the US would prevent the extradition of their citizen anyway, because they are protected by the constitution. The case is being prosecuted retrospectively - when McKinnin hacked the military computers, there was no treaty, and his actions were not considered an offense. The US is (allegedly) using the same anti-terrorism treaty (the one they haven't signed) to force the extradition of around 200 UK citizens, mostly for non-terrorist offenses (such as financial crimes).

help america go green

The following is a known fact _________________________________________________________________________ If all Americans used one third less ice in their drinks the United States would become a net exporter instead of an importer of energy. _________________________________________________________________________ c'mon America do you really need ice in that fountain drink you got from a machine that already cools your drink? As a bonus all who do this will earn at least twice(5 times at sonic) the amount of drink they would normally have.

America is doomed - only days left

Brace yourself, America - you're due to be destroyed before the end of December!Quite by chance, I came across this Koran-based prediction from The Jerusalem Post via Skeptical News. You're all going to be scraped off the planet by a giant tsunami, partly because of the way you have treated Native Americans. Quite how destroying their homeland makes things better, I can't quite see...

Have you been buried by the American snowpocalypse? (Or is it snowmageddon?) We Brits thought we had it tough recently, but thirty-eight inches?  That's almost a metre! There are quite a few pictures (more pictures) and stories on the BBC, even another Washington snowball fight (no guns, this time). What about iblers, though?  Can you get to your workshops?

Total Eclipse of the Moon Tomorrow Night

There's going to be a total eclipse of the moon tomorrow night at 7:26 pm PST. Assuming that the bay area isn't covered with clouds that means that we'll be able to see some lunar action without having to try to stay awake while getting our feet soggy climbing around a hill at 3 in the morning.Oh wait, I just checked the weather report for tomorrow night. Mostly cloudy. Damn! link

The United Inventors Association of America

HI, I found this site by accident really – but I’m glad I did. I’m not sure if many of you have heard of The United Inventors Association of America – but in the event you have not – we are the largest Inventor Organization in the world. We’re also the only Government registered non-profit 501(c)3 in the inventing industry. Our mission is simple – to educate inventors so they are not taken advantage of. There are hundreds of thousands of creative people like those here on instructable who are taken advantage of each year as they work their way through the inventing process. The UIA helps to arm them with education about how a product is taken from your basement to the store shelf. Membership in the UIA is FREE – and the opportunity to learn from professionals in the inventing industry, well, that’s priceless. If you get a moment check out the UIA (www.uiausa.org) or find a local Inventor Group in your town! Thanks – and keep being creative. Mark www.uiausa.org

John Cleese's "Letter To America"

Forwarded along by an Aussie. Enjoy.Dear Citizens of America,In view of your failure to elect a competent President and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. Her Sovereign Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy), as from Monday next.Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium," and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.2. The letter "U" will be reinstated in words such as "colour", "favour" and "neighbour." Likewise, you will learn to spell "doughnut" without skipping half the letters, and the suffix "-ize" will be replaced by the suffix "-ise."3. You will learn that the suffix "burgh" is pronounced "burra"; you may elect to spell Pittsburgh as "Pittsberg" if you find you simply can't cope with correct pronunciation.4. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels (look up "vocabulary"). Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.5. There is no such thing as "US English." We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter "u" and the elimination of "-ize."6. You will relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen," but only after fully carrying out Task #1 (see above).7. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday. November 2nd willbe a new national holiday, but to be celebrated only in England. It will be called "Come-Uppance Day." 8. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.9. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.10. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.11. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric immediately and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrification will help you understand the British sense of humour.12. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling "gasoline") - roughly $8/US per gallon. Get used to it.13. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call french fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called "crisps." Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with malt vinegar.14. Waiters and waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.15. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer," and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as "Lager." American brands will be referred to as "Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine," so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.16. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors as English characters. Watching Andie MacDowell attempt English dialogue in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" was an experience akin to having one's ear removed with a cheese grater.17. You will cease playing American "football." There is only one kind of proper football; you call it "soccer." Those of you brave enough, in time, will be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American "football," but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of Jessies - English slang for "Big Girls Blouse").18. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the "World Series" for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable and forgiven.19. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.20. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due, backdated to 1776.Thank you for your co-operation.John CleeseLink

Are you smarter than your elected officials?

A new study found that after giving the ISI civil literacy quiz to over 2000 people, those who held some form of office scored lower on average than those who didn't!Bear in mind it was close, and both were poor: 44% to 49%, yet it's kind of scary to think about! You can take the quiz yourself, and see how well you do. I got a 64%, which isn't great, but I'm apparently in the top 85% of the random sample!I'm curious how some non-Americans will fare. Please don't be embarrassed to post your score, we won't mock you too much...( via )

God save the Queen!

It has been brought to my attention, after many years of being a proud American, that we are all believing a lie. We are all subjects of the British monarchy. Our good people, the conspiracy theorists, whom never have lied to us before are informing us to that fact. Therefore to show my new allegiance to the Crown, I will sing "Rule Britannia" every morning and I will renounce baseball as my favorite sport and I am gladly replacing cricket as my new spectator sport (I still have no idea how the game is played but I will learn sooner or later). God save the Queen! Watch the video!

Calling all Homeschoolers, Past and Present!

This is Labot, letting you know that so far I've survived the recession and still have broadband. However, we're experiencing budget cuts at my house, and one of those budget cuts could end up being my education!Well, I definitely do NOT want to go to any of the public schools around here, as they are supposedly awful. This leaves me with two options:Get a job and help pay to continue going to private school. I like my school so I wouldn't mind doing this.Start homeschooling next year and save money by NOT going to private school, therefore being able to afford a nicer house and maybe get my own room (our rent's almost up and we need a place to live), parents buy me a computer and possibly even a car. I like nice things so I wouldn't mind doing this. So, my dear homeschooled population of Instructables, how do you like homeschooling? What are the pros and cons? How does it compare to public school? Private school?

America's Got Talent Judging Table Replica

Hi, I'm new here to Instructables. Roadtripping Accommodations and Equipment?

My best friend and I are planning a cross-country roadtrip this summer 2010. Starting out in Kansas City, MO, we plan on driving to Los Angeles and back within two weeks or so. Most of our money will probably go towards gas and food, so saving as much as possible when it comes to sleeping is very important. We're more than willing to camp, both in a tent and even in the car. There is an idea of staying in towns and cities for a few days at a time to increase our time abroad // our overall experience. If anyone has any tips, tricks, or anything else to offer, please let me know! Thanks much.

TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) 2008

TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) is the world's largest rocketry competition. Teams must design, simulate, build, and fly a rocket capable of carrying two raw eggs to 750 feet (no more, no less). The eggs must stay aloft, under a parachute, for precisely 45 seconds. About 700 high school teams compete each year, and the top 100 teams are invited to the finals in Washington DC. My team (#6081) was invited this year. We are a first year team and we finished 13th out of 643 teams. Here' what happened: We woke up bright and early on Saturday to prep the rocket. We put it on the launch pad and declared that it was ready to fly. The rocket zoomed up to 742 feet and stayed aloft for about 41.5 seconds (the goals are 750ft (no more, no less) and 45 seconds (again; no more, no less)). Both raw eggs survived the journey and we were awarded a score of 15.02 (the lower the better). We watched nervously as the other 99 teams launched their rockets. By around 1:30, nearly every team had launched and we were in 7th place! The top 18 teams are required to fly again (the average of the two scores is used to determine the rankings). As we were preparing the rocket, the Stealth B2 Bomber flew overhead - it was spectacular! With the B2 safely out of the way, launching resumed. Our rocket (because the winds suddenly died) flew higher than expected to an altitude of 783 feet and stayed aloft for 44 seconds, giving us a score of around 35. Unfortunately, this score demoted us to 13th place. After the initial disappointment, we were thrilled - our first-year rocketry team had beaten 643 other teams from around the country - we were in the top 2% of rocketry teams all over the United States of America! In addition, because we were one of the top 18 teams, we were invited to attend the NASA Student Launch Initiative (SLI). SLI offers a stipend for a teacher to attend a week long program with NASA focusing on how to integrate hands-on aerospace projects into math and science classrooms. After completion of the program, student rocketry team members are invited to submit a proposal to NASA for a rocket designed to fly one mile high with a scientific payload. If approved by NASA engineers, NASA hires us to build - and fly - our proposed rocket. The entire team is thrilled to have this opportunity! I thought many students who browse this forum might benefit from this post. TARC is an amazing opportunity, and with so many ingenious people on Instructables, the veteran teams will have to fight hard next year!

What does the Huawei trade ban mean for us?

You might have got in the news ages ago but for those in other countires:The company Huawei together with some of the subdivided companies got involved in the trade war between China and the US.In terms of consequenses for the users we certainly will see that there won't be any new devices getting on the local markets until this disaster got resolved. For existing users or those buying stocked items from before the ban took place the future might be not as good as previously thought.Firmware updates might not be allowed anymore, meaning if Huawei has a usable update for another region that could work it is a manual process that might render the device into a brick.Google already stopped Playstore support for many devices and there won't be any Google licinsed new devies anymore either if they get their will.Gives regional selling a whole new meaning and finally allows the full use of firmware checks and more to keep devices with addded but unlicensed Google services fully out.How did it come to the ban?The claim is that Huawei can already be used by the Chinese government to spy on users or might be to in the future. What gave it a feed for the press was the phones, the ban however is more aimed on backbone infrastructure.Collateral damage so to say.A bit like taking someone without any proof of wrongdoing and to lock him away.Oh, wait that is already a common thing...The funny thing is the same that Huawei now uses in a court claim against the US:Every hardware used for the internet in any way can have security issues.Otherwise we would not need firmware updates to fix security issues. What's the big deal then? Well, that is exactly the point Huawei is trying to make in court now.The problem behind the band and now issues worldwide is however realted to something we might not really consider at a first glance: The new 5G network for our mobile phones and other mobile devices.Once some "hackers" exposed and excessive list of security flaws in the 5G network two things became evident way too quickly:A) The same agencies that signed up on the security of the network got exposed for already impementing them into their surveillance systems.B) The securtiy flaws are so severe that anyone with access to the backbone infrastructure could basically check whatever happens on any part of the network, down to the user level and possible device control through remote services. The first is not a deal breaker as the agencies got exposed for abusing the rights of people since they exist. The second means it is no big deal to create patches for the flaws that can be implemented through firmware updates. And that is exactly the concerns of those spying on us (legally they claim). To implement the fixes you need to provide the information on the flaws and the exact way to fix them - which means you provide the information required to get acess like before even with the updates rolled out.Huawei provides everything from end user devices (phones and such), over routers and modems to the hardware required by your ISP or those in charge of the worldwide backbone infrastructure. With the ban it is now possible to get the 5G network happening with "Made in the USA" hardware only.Or, of course hardware from "trusted" companies outside the US.Brings nice and decent boost for the local harware manufactures while hiding the fact that the 5G network in the current form is more like a Swiss chesse - fully holes in terms of security. There are now claims however that say those agencies that signed up on the security "overlooked" the security flaws with the intention of having a future option against China in the trade war.Too bad the security flaws were not kep secret by those "hacker" paid to confirm the safety, instead they made an almost public event to present them.Otherwise the whole thing would have gone totally unnoticed by the world. And if such a move ever showed one thing than it is loyalty and only those countries with strong ties to the US jumped onto the ban while other either say they don't see concerns or simply wait until the concerns are proven to be real before replacing all the expensive gear with US products. If you followed the trade war a bit you realised it already thing with global consequences.Entire supply chains struggle or collapse already.Jobs are lost, economies suffer. And what was already a problem for countries outside Chinese and USA territories is now affecting the big guys as well. The world depends on fair trade. This fair bit is now devided by two countries deciding on what the rest of the world has to pay. What started with the refusal to take our rubbish was played out like a fight between two rival sibling below school age.Things are said and tossed around with no care about what happens as a result.Only problem is the toys are not stying in a kids room, the toys are things in other countries. The scratches are not a kids skin, they are in the hip pockets of everyone.Except for a few things both countries could do fine without each other that is what trading is for.But both countries want full control about everything with no care about how this affects other countries and people in the world.Prices are going up for everything as result. Will there be a winner, will there be an end, how might it end? There is only one winner and this winner is already clear, or make that two: Big companies and banks.Only those with a supply chain affected by the trade war will struggle to compensate and adjust to the changes. We just pay a higher price and have to accept it.Unless both sides give in and act like adults instead of toddlers the only possible end is once one side has fully control again. The most likely end would be a great devide between the US and China and a s result China getting an even stronger focus on being better than the rest of the world without involving it.Trillions of Dollars are wasted every year just because those two have to make copies of everything the other onew does wihtout ever really working together to more than half the costs. Not mention the money saved on no longer needing to spy on each other.Just take the moon, the USA needs to get back up there fast, China has fixed plans and India is not far behind either.Russia is stitting back and doing a bit here and there for everyone to be included without wasting too much money. If you check the territories in Antartica you will notice there is not that much Chinese presence. That bit of our world is appearntly only for peaceful exploration, despite the ever present military. Now what about the moon again ?China already managed several times to sent probes not only to the moon but also onto the moon - without any of it being detected by the US.Only once China presented images and videos it becae evident that their space program is much further ahead than previously thought.Pretending to only help the poor civilians aorund the south pole is a thing you might get away with. Not so much however when it comes to territories on the moon.If you can estabilsh a scientific base on the moon or estabilsh moning operations than how hard would it be to do the same with a military installation? And from up there even throwing rocks down to earth would do enough damage if the rocks are big enough...Nw, if you can't trsut a a space travelling country here on earth: How can you trust them to behave on the moon where really no one can go have a quick check on things? It is not like anyone would go for a quick drive to next outpost if it means risking your life every meter of the way.The consequences of this useless trade war are not only globally but start to affect the lifes everyone in the modern world. And did anyone ever consider that the atmospheric distortions are a problem for a telescope when watching the moon but not so much the other way around?Using the same digital telescope a pixel on the moon circles about 50 meters. Thanks to the long distance from out atmosphere to the moon.On the other hand the same pixel on earth, if watched from the moon, would only move around a few cm at the worst of times!

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey there.  After I have *hopefully* gone to uni and came out the other side with a degree I am considering moving out to the USA, probably to or at least to somewhere near San Diego. Nothing is set in stone for now so any suggestions on other places would also be helpful. But my main problem is that I have started to grow some plants back in Britain and don't particularly like the thought of just leaving them, so what are the laws on bringing plants with me? I know they are just plants but it's all the time I've put into them and to be honest, they're the first few plants I haven't killed. Any tips or stories of emigrating to the US would be great. As I said, this is just a thought, but I need to know more about how to go about moving there and what happens before I can truly decide. Thanks for your help :) Tom

Who else think its stupid that the big four of thrash metal didnt come to america first?

I just think its kind of stupid that they are 4 AMERICAN bands, and they go to europe first!!!! I just hope that they are in america by, say, summer of 2011? Just wanna know who else is crossing their fingers for an american tour.

Just joined Etsy

I've just joined Etsy! Any other etsy members here? What do ou make and sell? More the the point, if i post some pictures of stuff i've made in this forum, can anyone give me a price recommendation in US dollars? I'm not really interested in making a great deal of profit, but it'd be nice to recoup some of the time and money i've spent making things over the years. I'll have pictures up by tonight.
