Using used capacitors? Answered

I have a Bose amp to fix (car), which in this case means changing out the electrolytic capacitors, as bose used a bunch of not quite sealed ones way back when. So the question is: can I just use the ones I can salvage from all the various boards I've collected, or do they need to be the same brand/grade whatever? I know about polarity and rating (i can reed!?) and can solder/desolder pretty well. I know that there may be other prob's, though the capacitor issue was well known & documented on the web. Thanks to all who help out.

LCDs from electronic devices.

Dear fellow members. I have various LCDs from various devices (digital camera, mp3 players etc) that I wish to use. One has a 24 'pin' ribbon, another one is 20, and sure i have manny other ranges too. How can I get these bad boy's running? /experiment to find out which 'pin' does what? Is there any standards in regards to LCD displays? Unfortunatly, these displays don't have part numbers intact so i can't exactly look it up either. So basically i'm looking for a way to use an unknown LCD, or are they only fit for the bin? Thanks in advance, Luke.

Used 35 mm cameras

As I was looking in a thrift shop recently, I realised that all the ones I had been to had these old 35mm film cameras for a really cheap price.  The burning question I had was what could be done with these cameras and the parts in them?  Are there sites where this is addressed?  There must be a ton of things to be made with them and they will become re-purposed materiel.  How about a contest? Anyone?

Recycle Heaven

I would like to propose a new Contest category, if it doesn't already exist. I would love to see a contest where EVERY LAST PART of your project must be made from used recycled old junk. Anything can qualify, just as long as it came out of something that was previously used and must be at least 10 years old. Items could be grouped into sub-categories, electronics, papercrafts, automobiles, etc, etc. Maybe such a contest already exists, but it would be nice to see people using a little more of the old stuff. I'm seeing projects from 3D printers and arduino powered robots, and that is super cool, and I want to try those projects, but that kind of thing caters to only the techno-geek with half a life time of tools and knowledge. Most of the people who come to this site aren't that tech savy, and likely don't have a Raspberry Pi, or other Arduino mini-comp to program those super-cool projects. Lets Dumb it down a bit for the rest of us. I'd like to see more posts that can be done without having to go out for anything, unless it's to go to the tool shed or Garage for that old blender you were meaning to fix 20 years ago! This site rocks! I come here every day, and it inspires me even though I don`t have some of the knowledge. But if a project posted on here costs more than a retail version of it does, then I think the point of this site has been missed entirely.

Useful tools

Cheap, cordless drills are amazing tools. Take one apart and attach a speed controller, you got a motor for a robot. Also, they have good high torque motors that can be used for all sorts of things. A $50 RC transmitter and a receiver make good remote uses, such as remote detonation. More useful tools are pneumatic cannons. I've used them from pressure testing to damage testing. WHat are your useful, unconventional tools?

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey there.  After I have *hopefully* gone to uni and came out the other side with a degree I am considering moving out to the USA, probably to or at least to somewhere near San Diego. Nothing is set in stone for now so any suggestions on other places would also be helpful. But my main problem is that I have started to grow some plants back in Britain and don't particularly like the thought of just leaving them, so what are the laws on bringing plants with me? I know they are just plants but it's all the time I've put into them and to be honest, they're the first few plants I haven't killed. Any tips or stories of emigrating to the US would be great. As I said, this is just a thought, but I need to know more about how to go about moving there and what happens before I can truly decide. Thanks for your help :) Tom

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey everyone. I'm rather young, but I'm trying to plan myself a future. I've though about being a programmer(I'm VERY good with both software and hardware, better than anyone else I know at my age) but I've decided wasting my entire life sitting in front of a monitor isn't for me. I want something more active, something that won't get be bored. I'm into parkour recently, and I've always loved martial arts and knives. I thought if it's possible for me to develop a military career. I live in Israel but I really hate this place(the law is very tight and sensitive about whatever can cause harm. Knives are illegal to carry, even tear gas and pepper spray draw police attention) so I want to move to the US. My English is very good, but I heard it's hard to get there. Other than that I though about developing a military career at the US army. I might change my mind, but I just wanna know how much of my plan is possible for now. Once I turn 18 I have to serve at the military for 3 years, then once I'm 21 I wanna move to the US. Once I get there I wanna sign up to the army immediately. I'm not even sure I need a house as the army provides all I need, so I can basically live there. I would like to serve at rather high-risk force(snipers, green berets, etc) for as long as I can and then still work for the army at a more passive job, such as engineering, or research and development. I know it might sound weird and stuff, but I really wanna be a soldier. Please tell me if my plan is possible, comment or correct it. Thanks, Mike.

Old Laptop and Cell Phone (for parts)

If anyone is interested I can provide specifics, but I have an old phone and a PC with one unfixable part that renders that it useless (outside a group of tinkerers), and I'm hoping to make some extra money. It's in perfect condition, aside from this one little wire. I'll sell it for cheap, so don't be shy to ask. Hope we can help each other out!

On diesel and gasoline automobiles.

I will get a new used car soon, and am torn on an old diesel 1973 Mercedes and a gasoline 1985 Volvo sedan. A diesel to me is obviously better: more torque, easier to repair, lasts long, but I live in Vermont. And in Vermont, diesel turns to jelly, but I am prepared to deal with it. A gasoline engine, on the other hand, is faster, not what I need, and has less torque. It also stays good in the cold. I would turn the diesel into a veggie, to me that is a great benefit. The thing that keeps me from the diesel Mercedes is the law, you can't by a new diesel, and I can't find where it says I can't by a used diesel. Also, how hard would it be for me to convert to veggie, to get veggie fuel, clean it, and to heat the fuel for winter? There are many diesel stations just sitting around where I live, so that is always an option. Why do I even ask? Because a gasoline would be so much more convenient for me. A Volvo is a perfect choice if I want an easy to use, get up and go car. A Diesel would make me wait for a couple of minutes before I go anywhere. Of course, the final decision of the car I will buy will be totally remodeled into a newly painted, shnaztastic, car with all the means to repair on the road. When I start this summer, I will keep you posted, every step of the way. Post a comment or email me at Stephendanielalverez@gmail.com

Can I buy a soldering station used? Or is there a huge benefit to new irons?

I was wondering whether there was anything to look out for if/when buying a soldering station (hakko fx888, auyoe, weller, something of the like) on ebay or craigslist? I don't really want to spend a ton of money and was thinking I could save a little by going used. Thanks!

Best Use of Autotune

By now everyone that listens to music has probably heard (or heard of) autotune. It's been used for years to polish up pitchy vocals. Now it's more recognizable for being used on a totally different level. Autotune is the effect that T-Pain, Hellogoodbye (and by now, way to many others) use. At this point most people agree that it's way over used and just plain annoying. I have a poll to take. What song do you think actually uses it well? What's your vote for the Best Use of Autotune in a song?Mine is Woods, by Bon Iver.
