Cloning the famous ARA-2000 antenna for SDR use

Several years ago the company behind the original ARA-2000 antenna, Dressler Hochfrequenztechnik, closed. The ARA series of antennas, like many other products by this company never got a patent, instead it was trusted that no one would bother to replicate it.A bit like the Swiss Army knife, many tried to copy it, none really managed to match the original quality. There is quite a bit of hacking still going on for this antenna, most projects though seem to be abandoned at the time of writing this.I am currently trying to figure out how to create an entire clone that everyone who knows how to properly use a soldering iron can build. There is a lot to consider here...The active element is of quite unusual shape and needs to be wound around a cylinder of a pretty accurate diameter. My initial tests showed that for example aluminium foil with some unavoidable wrinkles already has a negative effect. And a change in diameter of just 2mm means the entire antenna only performs badly for the entire band. This part is thankfully already solved to my satisfaction using thin copper sheets and some stiff plastic sheet.Quite a pain though is the MMIC part - the amplifier that makes the antenna active. There is a ton of MMIC blobs available, either solo or as a ready to go amplifier.Downside is that without really knowing any characteristics of the original is comes down to guesswork. And as most of the cheap SDR dongles won't provide a BIAS TEE I will opt for an external power supply for the amp.I might provide the option for a inline use a bit later though. Why clone the ARA-2000 antenna? For starters you need to forget the mythical stories you might have heard about this antenna."Picks up even the weakest signals!", "Totally linear over the entire bandwidth" and so on...Without the amplifier the antenna is actually not even average in therms of reception performance. My initial tests with a network analyser showed that the anteanna actually is behaving really weird (without the amp!).Although this first bit needs further testing, it seems that most, if not all of the work in the 1.5-2GHz range is done by just the straight connecting strup going from the amp, or in my test case the coax, to the wrapped antenna part. For anything in the more interesting frequency bands it seems that the antenna is not using anything like a discone, whip or ground plane antenna.Instead the 3rd harmonics of a given frequency provide the max power output from the antenna but it arrives at the cable at the right frequency.Especially in the lower frequencies, below 200MHz there is also quite some phase shifting happening. As a passive antenna it seems to be almost impossible to find a frequency to transmit on without using some matching trickery first. But when it comes to size or looks, the ARA outperforms everything you can think of unless you want to constantly adjust the length of your whip antenna. And if you check what is available in real (user) data in terms of noise and signal quality than most other antenna types are far worse. The design provides a wide frequency range with very little noise, almost like a build in filter.Considering that mostly harmonic frequencies are used not that surprising.Getting hooked on SDR means you start little and then you want more and more.Unless you really need the low frequency HAM bands below 50MHz the ARA is a good choice that just makes sense. What is quite surprising in the original is the total lack of protection for strong signals.Sure, we might never need a lightning arrestor because all is enclosed in plastic and has little attraction lightning, but someone hittiing the transmit button close by....I will have to do some more checks to determine whether or not more protection is required. What is the problem with amplifier? For starters, no one really knows what was used in the original - they all just guess based on how well the real design matches some datasheet.Means whatever was used might as well be a custom made solution.I checked a few datasheets for MMIC amps but could not find any useful reference to the handling of things like negative gain, phase shift or a constantly changing impedance. Some however state that a 50 or 75Ohm signal is provided at the output. If I interpret that correctly than those MMIC's not only amplify but also do some matching. In most cases you won't need an amp that works outside what the antenna can provide.Problem is that I don't like regretting things later on ;)So IMHO it would be best to use a wideband MMIC covering all from about 1MHz to a few GHz.Additional filters can then cut off what is not required or where the antenna starts to fail. What is clear by the original design is that the cable shield acts as a ground and most likely also has a balancing function. It would make sense to add a ferrite trap close the the receiver to filter out what the cable might otherwise mess up.Can the frequency range be lowered to get even the low HAM bands? The answer is YES and NO.It is not a big problem to extend the cone shape and then hope to come much lower.Issue with this is the helical, long periodic design. As basically only the 3rd harmonics are used for all interesting frequencies any ARA type antenna going much lower would end to be really long. You can't just make it longer! One thing is to have a full and even number of turns. The original only had two, three turns is bad, four means the entire antenna is slightly longer than your average downpipe for your roof gutters....Other, seemingly logical alternative would be to stick to two turns and to increase the diameter.Apart from the size problem here we would also change the shape of the foil quite a bit and I have not done enough tests with that to provide a conclusion. Are there alternative design options? As it turns out copper pipe is available in 80mm diameters for the use in chimneys as well as downpipes. With a proper machine it would be pretty straight forward to remove what is not used as the active element.Milling a pipe or rod is these days a common thing in many good workshops. But on a hobby level and low budget....One of the best options for cheap test antennas of this design is to use tinting foil - the cheapest you can find ;)Just read the lable and make sure it does not use a metalised film.If it has no UV protection and no tinit at all it is best but hard to find.A little less stiff is the stuff to cover school books or cupboards.Vinyl is bad though! If you look for copper foil in the cheap online places you mostly find the suff used for shielding in rolls of 200x1000mm.Unless you have a really sharp knife or really suitable sissors this stuff is a pain to cut as the glue tends to stick very good to whatever you use to cut through.Don't ever try one of these blade type cutters for paper and pictures unless you put a slight oil film on all cutting surfaces first....In some hobby shops you can get copper foil without any glue in different thicknesses - this stuff is the prefered option. Not only cheaper than the China rolls with glue but you invest a bit more and get a thickness that does not wrinkle right away when working with it ;)Cheap, steel downpipe and cutters or nibblers?I though about and I tried - and I failed LOLUnless you use a pin type nibbler and custom made rig the result is quite bad - at least mine was. What works though is to use thin aluminium sheets, cut them and then bend them around a suitable template. But I ran out of old laminated sings to salvage and the duble sided ones I have left are too much work. What comes next?Well, I have a few rolls of copper sheets coming next month, the cheap glue covered type. This time however I will leave the plastic cover on and use tape to secure the foil to the pipe.A two-stage amp with external power supply is coming too so I can do some more tests in this area. For the time being I will opt for some 3D printed end caps but with a bit of luck can find something easier next time I have time to waste in the hardware store.Excluding cable and a cheap USB or 12V power supply, the current costs of building the anteanna are around $40US.About half of that if you don't cennectors and attach the coax directly.Another experiement I am working on is to use copper tape, 12mm wide, to create the antenna in a semi-fractal style.I am hoping this will provide a high enough gain so the antenna is usable without an amplifier.Right now the biggest issue is to find a really SDR suitable way to deal with strong signal close by.I will keep you update here when I start with the new antenna and upload some pics along the was of building it.

nerf gun airtech 2000 and 3000 mod!

Alright... so i hooked a soda bottle up to a nerf airtech 2000 (when i get the stuff for the 3000 i will do that one too) and so now i have a big resivoir and i have a way of hooking it up to a bike pump so i can pump it up to a reasonable pressure and run around and cause pain without tired arms. but the guns pump still works (and gets it up to about 40 psi after 2 minutes of pumping) you use a 4 way coupler WITH HOSE CLAMPS! and use tubing rated for pressure! you have a schrader valve (or similar) and plug the pump on the 4 way along with the out line. (this was done on a 2000, the 3000 may or may not work) DONT HOLD DOWN THE TRIGGER! if you do then much of the pressure will be lost. now you can shoot easily and not be found out by pumping noises) im sorry i dont have a diagram. so when your done... the soda bottle (2 litre is the best! it lasts longer), schader valve, output, and input from the onboard pump should all be on the 4 way coupler and be hose clamped (if not the hoses will fly off and youll hear a loud hiss and be angry) the 2 litre bottle can be consealed in your backpack or be heald under your armpit, glued or taped to the gun, whatever!

Ancient technologies revisited - 2000 year old battery

This is the first part of a series (if you are interested in more) about technologies that are confirmed by scientists by rejected by archeologists and historians alike.Without abtteries we would struggle to have what we have today. No one would have needed a laptop or mobile phone if it has to be plugged in all the time...And depending on where you read it is said that our batteries are about 200 years old.First we needed to "discover" electricity to get the idea that we might need something to store electrical power with.Building a rudimentary battery is not hard.Every kid can create these lemon or potato clocks and light with a cheap kit off the internet.Creating something with at least enough storage capaicty to run a small motor for while or to power a flashlight is a different thing. We often speak of power density - a formula to define how much energy per volume a battery can store and what the max amps delivered are.KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid!Means we imagine that we want to build battery with the most basic tools and ingredient you can come up with.My imaginary shopping list:A good amount of clay and plenty of water for it ;)Some malleable metal like bronze or coopper, maybe even gold. Some basic salts. Some basic acid.A small pot of bitumen.Making it - of course only theory...Use the clay to create good sice, vase shaped vessel that can hold about 10 liters when finnished.Create a suitable and tight fitting lid with the leftovers.Bake in your fire until ready. As an alternative and for a bit of asian touch you can of course substitute the clay with ceramic here - be creative.Finnish it off by applying a nice bitumen coat to really seal the surfaces of lid and vase.Time to grab a cold beer and get it to your mate with the big anvil and blast furnace.Ask him to create a thin walled metal tube that is about 20cm in diameter and one with a diameter of about 8cm.Once you made him agree offer the beer and ask to also make some sort of wire - like thin metal strips to be connected to one end of the tubes.Since you took way too much beer over to your friend I suggest that you continue when you are sober again ;)Wrap some cloth around the smaller tube until it fits tightly into the bigger one.Soak this stuffed cloth now with the brine you made from your first selected salt - you figure out which ones work.Let it dry or do it faster with some applied moderate heat.Repeat until it won't soak in any more brine and turned into a solid salt filling.Fill the smaller tube with your second salt, compress it hard and seal the ends with something the keeps the stuff insde but allows liquid to penetrate the salt.Place in your clay vase and secure with some filler material - be creative and consider things crushed volcanic rock, "inert" stuff like hair or cotton, maybe even wood splinters....If the filler material could float fill the top with something that keeps it down, if in doubt just use sand.Check that all is fine and that the wires come out on either side of the rim.Slowly fill with your acid of choice until all air is out and the vase is full to the brim.Seal the lid in place with some bitumen. If you did it right and used the right ingredients you have now a 2V (+-0.2V) battery with a capacity between about 3 and 10Ah.Will take you a bit of time and experimenting to get it right with the ingredients but it does work. What does not work according to official science is that you would have had any use for such a battery over 2000 years ago.A bit like the bumblebee...Science tells it is impossible that such a heavy insect with such tiny wings and such a great mass can fly.Earonautical engenners confirmed this many times. Our humble bee though has clue about science, aerodynamics or a perfect weight distribution, let alone things like lift. And so it just flies anyway.....The batteries exist, they were confirmed many times to be batteries with rather high capacities. But since in ancient Aegypt, China, India or soth America no one knew anything about batteries according to our archeologists and historians the only possible explanation is that they are not batteries at all....The question should not be whether or not they had batteris as this is already answered. The question must be: Why did they need batteries???And they had tons of them....Some types according to chemical analysis even rechargable. You only need batteries if you need electricity and you can only charge batteries if you have electricity....Start experimenting and try to figure out how many different types of batteries you can make from most basic ingredients...I will continue with another post about the purely theoretical existence of solar cells during ancient times.

Windows 2000 running from USB stick, need done by monday

I looked over google for this, but i dont get any of it. The idea is: My school have the best Web-Filtering system, SWGfL, and have RM connect, and the IT guys installed Win XP on all the PC's, by USB stick, which i figured when the PC wouldnt boot with my memory stick in. Knowing this hack, i want to know how to install Windows 2000 onto my 1 gig USB stick and have it boot on any USB-boot enabled PC. No one suggest linux, cause its obvious im running linux and i would get banned from the school PC's for a bit, or an Afterschool at the least, and because my account on the schools lets me change my background picture (My pics: Right click, Set desktop.....) and i seem to be one of the only ones that can, and because the high contrast lets you choose win classic for a theme (cause they disabled the display control). All in short...... I want Win 2000 to boot from my USB stick, let me change the background, and have it run on my school PC's. NO LINUX!! I have a sort of grudge against it aswell as the fact my ICT teacher saw me use Ubuntu once and said "Youre only allowed to use Windows on theese pc's" He never said which one. BTW: Everyone knows i can change my BG, even our schools admin, and they know i like having the theme as windows classic. And i need this USB windows ready by Monday, my deadline.............please dont read and not respond, and dont link me to pages you find off google, they dont make sense to me.

Is it safe to put a really powerful lamp in a 2000 lumen DLP projector?

I bought my Mitsubishi SD205U projector used. Eventually, the bulb is going to fail, and I want to know some stuff before it dies. I plan on buying an LED, driver, and heatsink off of Ebay, and modding the projector to use it. The best lens I can find it 60-80 degrees. A bunch of the light will go into the projector, will this damage anything? And other than the wasted light, will it hurt the image quality? Next question, can I put a much more powerful LED in it without damaging anything? Finally, is there anything I should know of before attempting this project?

Could a 1500-2000 mA draw from a car battery (in a car) for 14 hours be a problem? Answered

I want to be able to play my portable PS2 on the ride to Colorado in February. It's a fourteen hour drive. I would probably play much of the way up. It will draw 1.5-2 amps. Will this be a problem? I think the PS2 uses 8.5, but 12v comes out, so... Help?

Anyone know how to reinstall the hinge/springs in a 2000s Sony Walkman Personal CD Player?

I still use my beloved Sony Walkman (personal cd player ca. early-mid 2000s) with a cassette adapter in my 98 lumina, as well as w/ headphones on long family car trips. Sadly, this past weekend, I dropped it on hardfloor, and while it is otherwise unharmed, the lid and hinge-springs popped off. I was able to remount either just the springs or the lids, but not together. The lid will stay on and allow me to play, but I have to hold it open manually, which is going to be problematic later trying to keep it open to change CDs if driving alone. I know I should probably look at investing in an mp3 player instead, but I want to keep using my otherwise perfectly-good music player. Any suggestions for fixing the spring/hinge setup? Has anyone else ever had this happen?
