Articulating arm

I'm trying to find some solution for an articulating arm to go into an LED lamp project. I'd like either something cheap or something I can build, but so far I haven't had much luck. I could always dismantle an existing lamp, but it sort of defeats the purpose to buy a working lamp and take it apart to make another lamp. Any suggestions?

Building a robotic arm?

In Science next term, we've been told that we'll need to build a robotic gripper. All it has to do is pick up a cup. I've been having a look around, and the balloon idea isn't practical because if the cup was full it wouldn't work. And I'm okay with spending a little money, but I'd rather not spend $100 or anything on a kit. So what's a good idea for me?

Arm tendon connection. Answered

If your arm's tendon was connected to point 2 instead of 1, then wouldn't we be like 3-4 times stronger than we are now? A bit like C-3PO in Star wars. Look at a picture of his arms.

leg and arm weights

Will someone write up the plans for a HEAVY-DUTY ankle and wrist weight. I have been searching online for a company that will make custom weighted wrist and ankle weights but there aren't any. I'm wanting to make a 50 lb for the arms and 100 lb for the legs. I'm thinking along the lines of several iron or lead bars strapped together with a nylon fiber or other strong material. I've only ever done projects in high-school, where materials were provided, so I don't really know where to get the materials needed. Please help.

Arduino robotic arm

Hi, I just made a 5 DOF robotic arm and its not working for some reason I'm not sure whether if its the code problem or the mechanical part of the robothere's the Arduino code:#include #include Servo servo1; Servo servo2; Servo servo3; Servo servo4; Servo servo5; Servo servo6; int bluetoothTX = 11; int bluetoothRX = 12; SoftwareSerial bluetooth(bluetoothTX, bluetoothRX);void setup() { // put your setup code here, to run once: servo1.attach(3); servo2.attach(4); servo3.attach(5); servo4.attach(6); servo5.attach(7); servo6.attach(8); Serial.begin(9600); bluetooth.begin(9600); } void loop() { // put your main code here, to run repeatedly: if(bluetooth.available()>0) { int servopos1 = bluetooth.read(); int servopos2 = bluetooth.read(); int servopos3 = bluetooth.read(); int servopos4 = bluetooth.read(); int servopos5 = bluetooth.read(); int servopos6 = bluetooth.read(); Serial.println(servopos1); Serial.println(servopos2); Serial.println(servopos3); Serial.println(servopos4); Serial.println(servopos5); Serial.println(servopos6); servo1.write(servopos1); servo2.write(servopos2); servo3.write(servopos3); servo4.write(servopos4); servo5.write(servopos5); servo6.write(servopos6); } }

Flexible arm material

I'm looking to make a flexible arm that I can position however I want. I need it to have a fair bit of holding strength in that I don't want it to sag. It doesn't need to hold my body weight or anything like that and it can vibrate or move a little without being a problem. Immediately, two things come to mind: the plastic pieces used for coolant in machine shops that has now become a common material for something like this. The other is made up of stacked plates with a ball on one side and a socket in the other, I wire or something of the sort is put through it and a tensioning knob is used to pull it tight and keep it in place. Commonly, I see these in mag base indicators. I'd prefer to find the second one. Though, I can't seem to figure out what to look for in order to make my own. The best thing would be to find a modular kit that would allow you to make one fo any length (I need one that is about twice as long as a mag base indicator mount). Any thoughts on what or look for or anyone know where you could find something like this? P.s. this is going to be used as a way to hold a small screen. If it works well, I may adapt it to work for other things.

Robot costume arms idea?

I am building the robot below for a Halloween costume. I am building the head, upper and lower body, arms, and shoes out of silver painted cardboard. But as for the arms and legs I need advice as to what to use. I know the material used in these pics has a name but I am clueless as to where to find them and what it called. The costume should be flexible enough to dance (AKA wave my arms in a worm-like motion) at a Halloween party. Any tips or ideas? Thanks in advance. If you want I'll make an instructable once I figure it out and build it if you ask. PS I am 5 feet 8 inches, and My arms are not too fat or too thin, and I am 14 years of age if you care.

Looking for adjustable accordion arm

I recently had a great idea for a completely useless, yet hilarious project for me to work on, but I am stuck on a single piece. The end result is a joke device that uses one of those accordion, spring loaded boxing gloves controlled over USB (the idea came about in a discussion over the universal wish to punch idiots over TCP/IP). To understand what this is, you'll have to think slapstick comedy and saturday morning cartoons (of the Wile E. Coyote variety). It sort of looks like this but replace the lamb with a boxing glove, and when extended looks like this: XXXXXXXX. Imagine the coyote opening a door that he expects the Road Runner to be behind, and out pops a boxing glove on an accordion arm that hits him in the face, making those little roadrunners circle his head.I suppose I could make one out of some material (metal, plastic, wood?) but I don't have much in the way of fabrication facilities in my new apartment. The best outcome would be if I could get such an arm off of an existing device.Sure other things could work (a piston for example), but the look of this project is very important and an accordion arm is a requirement to that end.Any idea on how to go about building/obtaining such a thing? I can't even figure out what to use as search terms.

Dutchj's experimental K'nex side-arm

Having finished my rifle and finding myself with nothing to do ( Don't worry, it will still be posted this week ), I thought I'd finally have a go at side-arms. So I built the TDS2, and hated it ( I'm going to get bashed for that, I know it ). I decided to have a look at some others like Oompa-Loompa's unofficial side-arm, and the one Bakenbitz posted a picture of on KI some time ago. Afterwards, I came up with this. This side-arm is powerful because the magazine is at the front and the trigger is at the very back. It's also kept reasonably small because the magazine is inside the handle. It fires grey connectors. It's a bit clumsy, but it is only a first version. I can probably make it a bit smaller and more user friendly if I remake it. Tell me what you think, and as always, constructive criticism is more then welcome

Discreet prosthetic arm: A Steampunk nonsense?

I love steampunk aesthetics, in both machines and clothing (I'm meaning girls) branches... but I have no artistic talent at all, so I can't develop such a beautiful machines or decorations. But sometimes steampunk fans care a lot about clothes and less about characters. They simply dress up, and waste the chance to assume a character, especially at conventions and meetings. There are lots of steampunk prosthetic-mechanical arms and hands, but I can't avoid think about "less are more". I mean, a mechanical arm in brass, cooper  and leather talks about your wit and ability, but a (simple) wired frame UNDER the jacket, apparent only by bumps and tensions under the sleeve and glove, and even better with mechanical wishpers and quiet pneumatic sounds when it moves (if you are so gifted), tells a story about the character of your character (if you understand me): for example, an inventor who has lost the use of an arm, may try to recover it and keep it hidden, like a shame. You can link it with an accident, a tragedy, a heroic act or a sacrifice. It would be part of my character, If I would had one. BUT steampunk is all about aesthetic, so... is it a nonsense? Or is it a second-level, deeper dive in the steampunk world?

Best motor and switch for this swinging arm?

I am trying to make the following: i need a 4 foot arm to swing parallel to the ground at a fulcrum. Only needs to travel 90 degrees one direction, then back 90 degrees to its original spot - Kind of like 1 windshield wiper running parallel to the ground the weight of the arm plus load at the end is roughly 10pounds this would be triggered by a single button thats the gist of it. Now if. I could tweak it... i would like one press of button A to move the arm 90 degrees then it stops. A second press of button A would move the arm back to where it originally was.  Or, if this is too costly, I could hold the button down while the arm cycles 90 degrees and back, releasing the switch when the arm reaches its desired location I need cheap options or at least a good place to start. I have zero coding or electronics knowledge thank you

Help wiring and programming a Robot Arm? Answered

I have been building a robot arm for a competition, and I have the structure completed. I am very new to Arduino, and have little know-how when it comes to wiring properly and even less when it comes to programming. I have uploaded pictures of the robot arm as well as a crude circuit diagram of what I think needs to be wired. (Sorry if it is a bit confusing, I am reaaaaally new to this.) I am trying to control each joint (claw, wrist, elbow, shoulder, and rotary base) with a 10k pot. similar to how the Arduino servo knob command works. I plan on eventually making an instructable for this and will credit any help I get there.

Caring for a toad with a broken and infected arm? Answered

Last weekend I found a toad with his arm trapped in a mousetrap.  I don't know exactly how long he was there, but I discovered him when I heard this shuffling sound from the back of my garage and heard flies buzzing.  Upon investigating, I found poor Toady.  The flies had already laid eggs on his wound.  He was trying to hop away attached to the trap.   His arm is clearly broken.  He didn't have significant blood loss, but when I first opened the trap his tiny bones were visible at the injury site. I put Toady in a small bucket lined with moss and vegetation, along with adding a little bit of water, and covered the bucket with a dishtowel.  I used cotton swabs dipped in saline to clean the wound and applied antibiotic ointment (Neosporin without painkiller).  I also tied a thread slightly above the injury site to act as a tourniquet and prevent further infection, and possibly allow for his limb to naturally come off. Below the injury site is swollen, discolored and infected, growing a fuzzy fungus.  I've been checking on Toady every other day (I wasn't wanting to stress him out too much with frequent visits), cleaning his wound and infection and applying antibiotic ointment.  His arm is clearly dead weight and can't be salvaged.   I've put various bugs, slugs/snails and worms in there with him but I haven't seen him eat.  I put a june bug in there, and the june bug ended up trying to climb onto him but Toady seemed to try and squash the bug with his chest and then hopped over the bug to the other side.  Maybe the beetle is too big for him.  I haven't checked to see if the other goodies I gave him are just hiding under the moss. He doesn't appear to be losing or gaining weight.  He gets stressed whenever I visit, breathing rapidly and either trying to make himself look larger or do the opposite and huddle down, despite how careful and gentle I try and be around him. I'm worried about predators and infection if I were to release him now.  What should I do/not do?  I think I'll try Craigslist here to see if there happens to be an experienced amphibian owner with the proper supplies to care for him.  I doubt any vet here would be able to do anything, and I don't have the money to do so. Is this toad a male?  I thought he was based on his size since he's on the small size, but perhaps it's a youngster?  He doesn't make any noises with me, but I'm not sure if it was him chirping in his bucket or a nearby toad.  I know there's several right in the immediate vicinity.

Call to arms: malleable interface creation!

Hello! My name is Luiz Gustavo, and I'm a brazilian design student. First of all, this is my very first post at this space, and I'm very very open to hear whatever critics or opinion of everyone. My hardware & electronics knowledge is very limited, so I'm opening the whole creation of the following project to whoever is interested in co-creating it with me. As part of my ongoing graduation project, I want to create a malleable interface using textiles. The idea is pretty simple. I want to create an open-source hybrid object, a digital raw data generator, consisted of a highly malleable interface that is capable of being folded, twisted and adjusted to the will of its user: an interface as simple and soft as a piece of silk fabric. The data generated must give the current state (deformation and positioning) of the malleable object to a digital output in realtime. The malleable object has to be modular, as well as a little stretchable. I really want to create something that can be remounted, modified, and used in different kind of contexts - not so only as my main purpose at the creation of an experimental art installation I've been working on as my graduation project. At this website I've posted a larger description of my intentions with this interface, as well as a first draft of it: http://theinstrumentproject.tumblr.com/ I'm not quite sure how's that going to be done, what have already been done in this area, what kinds of open hardware I can use, sensors and so on. I'm really starting this research right now, but it would help a lot to at least hear some possibilities from anyone. I'm very very open to hear any kind of contribution! Thanks! [= Best regards, Luiz Gustavo. (lgguts@gmail.com).
