Asus EeePC Charger Troubles

First of all, I have to say I am sorry for posting so many forum topics.  However, I often do need help from people like those found here - thank you all! Now, with that out of the way, my problem. For christmas, I got an Asus EeePC. I am not sure of the specific model, but it is a Windows 7 Starter one. Anyway, a few weeks ago (I'm not sure specifically), the charger gave up and died on me. After checking the half that goes to the wall with another device, I realised that my problem lay in the adapter. I figured it was dead anyway, so no further harm could be done, and proceeded to hacksaw it open. Miraculously, after this, it worked. However, it is obviously not very convenient to have a charger that is constantly spilling its guts all over the place, so my mom bought me a new one off ebay. This one worked completely fine, except it was the wrong size plug for the laptop, so it had to constantly be anchored downwards. I decided to cut the two wires and connect the red to the red and the black to the black so I could have a normal adapter and the right sized plug. However, one of them did not have a red and a black but a white and an uncovered. After a short bit of research, I decided the positive was probably the white, so connected the white to the red and the uncovered to the black. However, when I plugged this in, it did not charge, and instead steam/smoke began to come from the laptop. I promptly disconnected and binned it. My mom bought a third one off ebay, which worked fine and fit fine, but when plugged into the laptop, did not charge it and the little indicator LED on the adapter flickered. So, for a third time, my mom bought a new charger off ebay. Again, this worked and fit fine, but when plugged into the laptop, did not charge it and flickered its LED. I tried this with various plugs from the wall (the figure-of-8 type), in various extensions, and straight into the wall socket, but all still to the same result. Each charger came from a different person on ebay, and each (including the original and second which both worked) had an output of 19V 2.1A. I cannot figure out why neither of the latest two have worked. Is my laptop broken? Am I somehow now buying the wrong chargers? Were the past two mere coincidences? Please help. Thanks in advance,  ~H4ZZ

ASUS EeePC review and Laser Etching

Asus, a sponsor of Instructables, has put together WePC where they are asking for input on their next generation laptops. As part of their sponsorship, they've asked my opinion on various aspects of laptops. Most recently ASUS EeePC review and Laser Etching. As part of this campaign, Asus was kind enough to lend me an EeePC. I gave it to an intern at Instructables, Matthew Dalton, who was really excited to try it out for note taking in class, and general portable computer usage -- his review follows below. Since I've been writing about how important it is to customize your laptop, I also asked Matthew to give the EeePC a laser tatoo, and you can see the results were beautiful! Matthew' review continues here. Finally, I'd like to know what you have thought about this Asus campaign. If you would be kind enough to take this survey, I would really appreciate it. Open-Source Laptop Control

Asus, a sponsor of Instructables, has put together WePC where they are asking for input on their next generation laptops. As part of their sponsorship, they've asked my opinion on various aspects of laptops. Most recently Open-source control of your laptop. The question this week is whether it is better to have simple control mode, advanced mode, or both options. This strikes me as one of those questions where the answer is so obvious that it's actually hard to answer because you're sure the question can't be that simple. Of course you want both! Default to simple, but allow one to switch to advanced to get under the hood to make changes. However, there is a deeper issue here, which is that laptop manufacturers should give greater control over their hardware to their users. They should open up their interfaces and let users write and install Firefox-plugin-like extensions to the laptop. My rant continues here. Finally, I'd like to know what you have thought about this Asus campaign. If you would be kind enough to take this survey, I would really appreciate it. Comments here are also good. Thanks!

Ways to customize your laptop

Asus, a sponsor of Instructables, has put together WePC where they are asking for input on their next generation laptops. As part of their sponsorship, they've asked my opinion on various aspects of laptops. Most recently Ways to customize your laptop? I just had a call with some of the people at Asus this morning, and they are actively finalizing the list of features for the community-designed laptop. So, if you still have a suggestion, head over to WePC and submit! I've written before about how I think customization makes a laptop attractive, and how my favorite way to customize laptops is with a laser etcher. However, I realize not everyone yet has access to a laser. So, what are some other non-traditional (i.e. stickers) ways to customize your laptop?Whiteboard material -- you could use it as a giant, oversized to-do list! Make sure to include a snapping plastic cover to protect your notes from being rubbed off.Neon message board laptop -- a neon message board is a erasable luminescent whiteboard-like surface that is illuminated from the edge; they are often seen is restaurants showing specials. Use the laptop's backlight for the illumination, and broadcast your message or design with fluorescent markers.Magnetic surface -- magnetic laptop poetry.Corkboard -- Remember to always use the flush thumb-tacks!Chalkboard -- perhaps a little dusty, but you could probably end meetings early by "accidentally" running your fingernails across it.The cool thing about all of these materials (perhaps excluding the corkboard) is that they could easily fit into the minimalist, clean-lined laptops that have become the norm. But, they allow you to really be expressive when you need a splash of something unique to break you out of a funk -- or just a note to pick up milk.

What accessory or attachment, that doesn't exist today, would you love to see in your dream netbook?

Asus, a sponsor of Instructables, has put together WePC where they are asking for input on their next generation laptops. As part of their sponsorship, they've asked my opinion on various aspects of laptops. Most recently What accessory or attachment, that doesn't exist today, would you love to see in your dream netbook?.Here are two things I would love to have integrated into a netbook: internal power adapter and standard wireless accessories.I don't think anyone really carries a netbook to cafes, on airplanes, or wherever and cavalierly leaves their power adapter at home. Some people don't even leave without their phone's power adapter -- the risk to reward ratio is just too great. So, with lower power consumption and better power management of netbooks, I'd like to see one with an integrated power adapter. It should plug directly into 120 VAC with an integrated cord, or use a standard power adapter cord. Just because people are used to having a separate power adapter, doesn't mean it's the right thing. Once one manufacturer does it, the rest will need to follow suit.A netbook is great for carrying around and working, but eventually most users will take it home or to the office, and want to use any number of accessories that make their work more comforatble: external keyboard and mouse, second monitor, USB headset or microphone, cell phone cable, etc... Both at home and at my office, I have USB hubs setup to handle all the things I need to plug into my laptop. The cables are ugly, collect, dust, and get in the way. I preferentially buy wireless devices when possible, but they still require a USB port for their receivers. My dream netbook would wirelessly pair with my peripherals through Bluetooth or some other standard, leaving my USB ports free for stuff that really needs them. What's your dream accessory? Let me know here, and leave a comment or idea on WePC. If it's good enough, they just might make it...Finally, I'd like to know what you have thought about this Asus campaign. If you would be kind enough to take this survey, I would really appreciate it. Comments here are also good. Thanks!

Asus laptop wont connect to certain wifi network anymore?

Hi !! .. Okay, so I got myself a new asus laptop about 2 weeks ago. I brought it to work and connected it to my works wifi , as I always do with my phone as well , and everything worked perfectly. I was able to use the wifi for about 3 or 4 days when suddenly the next day it just wouldn't connect anymore. So I tried forgetting the network and reconnecting, but it says "verifying and connecting" and then "cant connect to this network" .. The password hasn't changed, I can still connect to the works wifi with my phone and other devices, even when I forget the network and reconnect. And my laptop can also connect to other networks and hotspots, like my phone, my moms phone, the cafe's network, etc. So the laptops wifi does work, just not with the works network anymore.. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts please ?? I would really appreciate it.And im not very tech clever, so please explain nicely so I know what your talking about :) ! Thank you.

My new monitor will work with my computer, but not my laptop, help!!?

Hi, When i say new, i mean new-hardly used, i used it a bit before moving and its been locked away a few years up till now. I got my Asus VW192T monitor out, spent an hour looking for the D-Sub cable which for reasons unknown were packed in a different box, and hooked it up. Immediately my laptop gets acknowledgement of the monitor, and the display mode changes, it now has a second monitor in the screen resolution options, and acording to my laptop, the monitor is working, however, through all of this, the monitor has remained in sleep mode, when i turn it on, it just says no signal. i spent hours changing settings, and fiddling around in the nVidia control pannel to change my laptop resulotion as well as the asus monitor resolution, restarting the computer each time, but nothing. I then go get the old packard bell computer, which now is over 14 years old, hooked it up and immediately the monitor is working, so theres nothing wrong there. In the past ive been able to connect my laptop to a mates computer via d-sub port, as it only has d-sub and i havent got a hdmi, it worked fine. Clueless, i searched for a driver which i perhaps did not have, but as it turns out, no drivers exist for this monitor, so now i am clueless. Additionally, i cant access any boot menue options in regards to the monitor, like booting in safe mode or anything, because my own laptop monitor goes black until windows has loaded, when the monitor is connected. can someone please help me out? why wont my monitor work with my laptop? the laptop is a toshiba qosmio x500, the graphics card is Nvidia GeForce360M, the old packard bell computer has no graphics card.

external battery charging option for Asus EP121 tablet pc

Hello all, A friend posed me with a problem as to how to extend his field time with his Asus EP121 tablet pc. It does not have removable batteries so the option appeared to be to come up with an external battery pack to power the tablet when the internal battery got low on charge. The output of the DC charger is listed as 19.5 V DC / 3.08A. A suitable option to me appears to be a Dewalt cordless tool battery pack. The unit in particular is the DCB200 20V MAX lithium ion battery pack, spec'd at 20V at 3.0AH. Aside from having to come up with an interface between the connector on the battery pack to the jack on the tablet, is this idea advisable or viable? Thanks, Gutbucket gutbucket@bell.net

Help hosting a website using a WL-500gP Asus router + a 2GB flash drive

Hello everyone, As the title suggests I am trying to host my own website by using the device combo mentioned in the title. So far I managed to create a DNS hostname free from www.dyndns.com mostly because of my Dynamic IP address. I also managed to get the router to update the IP in dynds' database. The problem is that whenever I type in the hostname in the addressbar the router's login page shows up instead of the website (and I do understand why this is). The website itself is stored on the flash drive connected to the router via USB. I think that by typing ftp://my-hostname.dyndns.org/path-to-the-html-file-on-the-flashdrive  I can view the website but this is not very easy to remember so I doubt any person wanting to visit my site is going to remember the path. Is there a way to make my website show up when typing the hostname instead of the router's login page? And if not can I atleast, in some way, redirect people to the html file?

Will this motherboard support a dual core CPU? Answered

I'm helping my friend do some upgrades on his computer, it's a Compaq Presario SR2034NX desktop. I'm wondering if it will support a dual core processor or not. According to HP, it doesn't, but looking around on the internet, I've seen quite a few people have upgraded to dual cores. However, there's some minor differences with this particular motherboard. It seems that there are actually two different types of motherboards with the same model number from Asus (A8M2N-LA). On the HP site they have different HP model numbers (a more advanced board - the NodusM3-GL8E, and the one I have - the Naos-GL6; both with the same A8M2N-LA number for Asus) It appears that the NodusM3-GL8E supports all sorts of fun things like 8 GiB of DDR2 800 RAM and dual cores up the wazoo. However, the Naos-GL6 looks like a stripped down version of the NodusM3-GL8E (two less RAM sockets, etc.), so it might not support a dual core. I'd like to know before purchasing, since Newegg won't accept processor returns for a refund. Also, 800 Mhz RAM would be nice to have, HP says it only supports 667 Mhz RAM but other people have put 800 Mhz in with no issues. Does anyone know if my friend's mobo will support a dual core and 800 Mhz RAM?

My ASUS computer reinstalled windows and now all the documents, data, settings I've put on my computer is gone?

I'm freaking out! I'm a high school student with 2 AP classes and my computer seems to be completely wiped, the documents, settings, EVERYTHING! I have an ASUS K55a laptop. It's about 3 years old. Earlier today my browser (Internet Explorer) was acting funny so I tried to shut down my laptop. It wouldn't do anything so I tried again by trying restart. It eventually shut down but when I tried to start it again a page came up saying something about windows is malfunctioning or something like that. It gave me the option to "start normally" or diagnose and address the issues. I picked the latter. Then it started updating and it said it would take about 20 minutes. I waited and when I came back, the computer was restarting itself, updating, restarting itself, updating, restarting itself, updating ... It wouldn't stop and the keyboard wouldn't work so I took out the battery. When I started it again it started doing the same thing and I had to quit a few programs using control alt delete. That's where I am now. I tried to do a system restore but it says there are no points to restore to. Is all my work lost? Please help!

Why can't I use all of my computer's memory?

I have 16gb installed in my asus M5A97 and in system properties it says only 7.95 is usable. Why is this? The max memory for my board is 32 gb.
